Abstract:Lotteries have been a source of state revenue intermittently through the ages. Modern lotteries, where desktop computers in widespread retail outlets can process sales swiftly and efficiently, are seen as a means of extending the tax base without offending voters. The science of statistics is relevant to lotteries in at least four ways.The prize structure of a lottery might be set to maximize revenue. This involves a balance between the proportion of stake money returned to gamblers, its distribution among several prize levels, the expenses of running the lottery, and the tax take.Lotteries are usually based around “select X numbers from this list of Y numbers,” with the values of X and Y chosen by reference to the expected sales. Simple probability, resting on counting the numbers of winning outcomes at a given level, enables the winning chances to be calculated.The organizers intend that numbers are selected at random, and may televise draws live, with independent scrutineers, to give assurance on this point. However, many gamblers continue to seek patterns in the data. Statistics alone can never prove that the draws are free from fraud or bias, but tests of randomness can indicate whether the results are consistent with the organizers’ aims.Gamblers may seek to use the data on the numbers of prize-winners in pari-mutuel lotteries to make inferences on the choices other gamblers are making, as the sizes of prizes depend on how many share them. Thus, even though using less popular choices should make no difference to the chances of winning, a gambler using this information can expect any prizes won to be larger than average.

Abstract:At a first glance lottery is a form of gambling, a game in which the chances of winning is extremely small. But upon a deeper look, considering that the Jackpot prize of lotteries is a result of the active participation of millions of players, we come to the conclusion that the interaction of the simple rules with the high number of players creates an emergent complex system. Such a system is characterized by its time-series that presents some interesting properties. Given the inherent stochastic nature of this game, it can be described within a mean-field type approach, such as the one implemented in the Local Growth and Global Reset (LGGR) model. We argue that the Jackpot time-series behaves ergodic for six lotteries with diverse formats and player pools. Specifying this consideration in the framework of the LGGR model, we model the lotteries with growth rates confirmed by the time-series. The reset rate is deduced mathematically and confirmed by data. Given these parameters we calculate the probability density of the Jackpot prizes, that fits well the empirically observed ones. We propose to use a single w parameter, as the product of the player pools found under the jurisdiction of the lottery and the chance that a single lottery ticket wins.

Abstract:One of the most popular lottery games worldwide is the so-called ``lotto k/N''. It considers N numbers 1,2,...,N from which k are drawn randomly, without replacement. A player selects k or more numbers and the first prize is shared amongst those players whose selected numbers match all of the k randomly drawn. Exact rules may vary in different countries. In this paper, mean values and covariances for the random variables representing the numbers drawn from this kind of game are presented, with the aim of using them to audit statistically the consistency of a given sample of historical results with theoretical values coming from a hypergeometric statistical model. The method can be adapted to test pseudorandom number generators.

Abstract:Let $L(n,k,r,p)$ denote the minimum number of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set such that all the $\binom{n}{p}$ $p$-subsets are intersected by one of them in at least $r$ elements. The case $p=r$ corresponds to the covering numbers, while the case $k=r$ corresponds to the Turán numbers. In both cases, there exists a limit of $L(n,k,r,p) / \binom{n}{r}$ as $n\to\infty$. We prove the existence of this limit in the general case.

Abstract:Traditionally, the Gambler's Fallacy is described as the belief that a sequence of independent outcomes over time should exhibit short-run reversals. The underlying psychological bias thought to drive this fallacy is Representativeness Bias: the idea that even a small sample of outcomes should closely reflect the theoretical probability distribution (Tversky and Kahneman, 1971). Yet representativeness also has less commonly explored consequences in the cross-sectional dimension. We find strong evidence for this in lottery play where probabilities are well-defined and transparent, using a dataset of over 1.6 million lottery tickets purchased by over 28,000 players. Specifically, individuals prefer number combinations that are cross-sectionally representative of the uniform distribution from which they are drawn. We test two possible approaches to implementing representativeness; a heuristic 3-bin approach which is promoted in some gambling advice literature, and a direct optimization approach in which gamblers try to spread the numbers in the chosen set as evenly as possible across the lottery number range. By both measures, gamblers over-gravitated to highly representative lottery number sets and over-avoided less representative sets, compared to the proportions that the true lottery odds would suggest. In this pari-mutuel lottery setting, a cost is incurred by gamblers with this type of bias, by reducing their expected winnings.
On the Lottery Problem: Tracing Stefan Mandel's Combinatorial Condensation

Abstract:Stefan Mandel is the man who won the lottery 14 times. He never disclosed the recipe he called combinatorial condensation, which enabled him to hit the Romanian lottery jackpot in the early phase of his betting career. Combinatorial condensation is frequently mixed up with another strategy known as buying the pot, which Stefan Mandel was pursuing later on. On occasion, he dropped a few hints on combinatorial condensation. The hints are applied in this work to narrow down and assess his initial recipe. The underlying theory resembles what a weekend mathematician, as he once referred to himself, may have encountered in the 1960s. Calculations indicate that he took residual risks that his method might fail. Residual risks explain why he changed his strategy from combinatorial condensation to buying the pot. The cardinality of the (15, 6, 6, 5)- and (49, 6, 6, 5)-lottery schemes shows that Stefan Mandel probably wasn't aware of lottery designs. First concepts on such topics had been available at that time, but coherent theories on combinatorial designs took off only in later decades, triggered by growing computing power, and eventually triggered by Stefan Mandel's publicity and successes in the field. But, as the comparison with actual covering designs reveals, Stefan Mandel most likely pioneered in constructing a (15, 6, 5)-covering design many years before others published about it, which he applied in the Romanian lottery.

An Alternative Proof for the Expected Number of Distinct Consecutive Patterns in a Random Permutation

Abstract:Let $\pi_n$ be a uniformly chosen random permutation on $[n]$. Using an analysis of the probability that two overlapping consecutive $k$-permutations are order isomorphic, the authors of a recent paper showed that the expected number of distinct consecutive patterns of all lengths $k\in\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ in $\pi_n$ is $\frac{n^2}{2}(1-o(1))$ as $n\to\infty$. This exhibited the fact that random permutations pack consecutive patterns near-perfectly. We use entirely different methods, namely the Stein-Chen method of Poisson approximation, to reprove and slightly improve their result.

Abstract:How many fair coin tosses to choose 1 of $n$ options with uniform probability? Although a probability problem, the solution is essentially number-theoretic, with special roles for Mersenne numbers, Fermat numbers, and the haupt exponent. We propose a bit-efficient scheme, prove optimality, derive the expected number of coin tosses $e[n]$, characterize its fractal structure, and develop sharp upper and lower bounds, both discrete and continuous. A minor but noteworthy corollary, with real-world examples, is that any lottery or simulation with finite budget of random bits will have a predictable pattern of lucky and unlucky numbers.

Abstract:Despite its unusual payout structure, the Canadian 6/49 Lottoc is one of the few government‐sponsored lotteries that has the potential for a favorable strategy we call “buying the pot.” By “buying the pot.” We mean that a syndicate buys each ticket in the lottery, ensuring that it holds a jackpot winner. We assume that the other bettors independently buy small numbers of tickets. This paper presents (1) a formula for the syndicate's expected return, (2) conditions under which buying the pot produces a significant postitive expected return, and (3) the implications of these findings for lottery design.

Abstract:Consider the following probability puzzle: A fair coin is flipped n times. For each HT in the resulting sequence, Bob gets a point, and for each HH Alice gets a point. Who is more likely to win? We provide a proof that Bob wins more often for every n>=3. As a byproduct, we derive the asymptotic form of the difference in win probabilities, and obtain an efficient algorithms for their calculation.

Abstract:We mathematically model the supertask, introduced by Hansen, in which an infinity of gods together select a random natural number by each randomly removing a finite number of balls from an urn, leaving one final ball. We show that this supertask is highly underdetermined, i.e. there are many scenarios consistent with the supertask. In particular we show that the notion of uniformity for finitely additive probability measures on the natural numbers emerging from this supertask is unreasonably weak.

Abstract:This paper investigates a variant of the famous "happy numbers" sequence, given by A351327 on the oeis. First of all we'll define this integer sequence, and then we'll show some important results about it; in particular we conjectured that if $k$ is a term of the sequence, then it converges to 1 in a number of steps less or equal to 3. Furthermore it will be possible to find some codes written in Wolfram language in order to compute large terms of the sequence and to support our hypothesis. At the end we'll explore some new conjectures and generalizations about this kind of integer sequence.

Abstract:Is there a joint distribution of $n$ random variables over the natural numbers, such that they always form an increasing sequence and whenever you take two subsets of the set of random variables of the same cardinality, their distribution is almost the same? We show that the answer is yes, but that the random variables will have to take values as large as $2^{2^{\dots ^{2^{\Theta\left(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\right)}}}}$, where $\epsilon\leq \epsilon_n$ measures how different the two distributions can be, the tower contains $n-2$ $2$'s and the constants in the $\Theta$ notation are allowed to depend on $n$. This result has an important consequence in game theory: It shows that even though you can define extensive form games that cannot be implemented on players who can tell the time, you can have implementations that approximate the game arbitrarily well.

Abstract:The lottery ticket hypothesis conjectures the existence of sparse subnetworks of large randomly initialized deep neural networks that can be successfully trained in isolation. Recent work has experimentally observed that some of these tickets can be practically reused across a variety of tasks, hinting at some form of universality. We formalize this concept and theoretically prove that not only do such universal tickets exist but they also do not require further training. Our proofs introduce a couple of technical innovations related to pruning for strong lottery tickets, including extensions of subset sum results and a strategy to leverage higher amounts of depth. Our explicit sparse constructions of universal function families might be of independent interest, as they highlight representational benefits induced by univariate convolutional architectures.

Abstract:Drawing (a multiset of) coloured balls from an urn is one of the most basic models in discrete probability theory. Three modes of drawing are commonly distinguished: multinomial (draw-replace), hypergeometric (draw-delete), and Polya (draw-add). These drawing operations are represented as maps from urns to distributions over multisets of draws. The set of urns is a metric space via the Kantorovich distance. The set of distributions over draws is also a metric space, using Kantorovich-over-Kantorovich. It is shown that these three draw operations are all isometries, that is, they exactly preserve the Kantorovich distances. Further, drawing is studied in the limit, both for large urns and for large draws. First it is shown that, as the urn size increases, the Kantorovich distances go to zero between hypergeometric and multinomial draws, and also between Pólya and multinomial draws. Second, it is shown that, as the drawsize increases, the Kantorovich distance goes to zero (in probability) between an urn and (normalised) multinomial draws from the urn. These results are known, but here, they are formulated in a novel metric manner as limits of Kantorovich distances. We call these two limit results the law of large urns and the law of large draws.

Abstract:Recent theories (Rabin, 2002; Rabin and Vayanos, 2010) propose that both the Gambler’s Fallacy and the Hot Hand Fallacy are driven by Representativeness Bias, also known as the Law of Small Numbers (Tversky and Kahneman, 1971). The Lucky Store Effect (Guryan and Kearney, 2008), in which the popularity of a lottery retailer surges after selling a winning ticket, bears an intuitive similarity to the Hot Hand Fallacy in terms of the belief that ‘previous winners will win again’, yet has been previously thought of as irreconcilable with Representativeness Bias. This paper develops theory and empirical evidence on this issue. We extend the Law of Small Numbers model of Rabin (2002), to the context where a decision-maker chooses among different lottery ticket stores after observing a history of prior outcomes. We show the conditions under which the decision-maker tends to believe that the store which has won previously has a higher chance of winning again, even if this event has only occurred once before. We then provide new empirical evidence on the Lucky Store Effect and Gambler’s Fallacy, from a large peer-to-peer online lottery marketplace for the Chinese national lottery. We find that lottery players exhibit Gambler’s Fallacy beliefs when picking lottery numbers, while believing in Lucky Stores when choosing which online lottery store to purchase their tickets from, which is consistent with the result in our model that decision-makers will tend to believe in the Lucky Store Effect when the perceived uncertainty about true probabilities is greater.
