Abstract:We carefully analyze the conditions for an abelian gauged linear σ-model to exhibit nontrivial IR behavior described by a nonsingular superconformal field theory determining a superstring vacuum. This is done without reference to a geometric phase, by associating singular behavior to a noncompact space of (semi-)classical vacua. We find that models determined by reflexive combinatorial data are nonsingular for generic values of their parameters. This condition has the pleasant feature that the mirror of a nonsingular gauged linear σ-model is another such model, but it is clearly too strong and we provide an example of a non-reflexive mirror pair. We discuss a weaker condition inspired by considering extremal transitions, which is also mirror symmetric and which we conjecture to be sufficient. We apply these ideas to extremal transitions and to understanding the way in which both Berglund-Hübsch mirror symmetry and the Vafa-Witten mirror orbifold with discrete torsion can be seen as special cases of the general combinatorial duality of gauged linear σ-models. In the former case we encounter an example showing that our weaker condition is still not necessary.

Abstract:We present a general phenomenological framework for dialing between gravity mediation, gauge mediation, and anomaly mediation. The approach is motivated from recent developments in moduli stabilization, which suggest that gravity mediated terms can be effectively loop suppressed and thus comparable to gauge and anomaly mediated terms. The gauginos exhibit a mirage unification behavior at a "deflected" scale, and gluinos are often the lightest colored sparticles. The approach provides a rich setting in which to explore generalized supersymmetry breaking at the LHC.

Abstract:The two discrete generators of the full Lorentz group $O(1,3)$ in $4D$ spacetime are typically chosen to be parity inversion symmetry $P$ and time reversal symmetry $T$, which are responsible for the four topologically separate components of $O(1,3)$. Under general considerations of quantum field theory (QFT) with internal degrees of freedom, mirror symmetry is a natural extension of $P$, while $CP$ symmetry resembles $T$ in spacetime. In particular, mirror symmetry is critical as it doubles the full Dirac fermion representation in QFT and essentially introduces a new sector of mirror particles. Its close connection to T-duality and Calabi-Yau mirror symmetry in string theory is clarified. Extension beyond the Standard model can then be constructed using both left- and right-handed heterotic strings guided by mirror symmetry. Many important implications such as supersymmetry, chiral anomalies, topological transitions, Higgs, neutrinos, and dark energy, are discussed.

Abstract:We give a uniform, Lie-theoretic mirror symmetry construction for the Frobenius manifolds defined by Dubrovin-Zhang in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/9611200" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9611200">arXiv:hep-th/9611200</a> on the orbit spaces of extended affine Weyl groups, including exceptional Dynkin types. The B-model mirror is given by a one-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg superpotential constructed from a suitable degeneration of the family of spectral curves of the affine relativistic Toda chain for the corresponding affine Poisson--Lie group. As applications of our mirror theorem we give closed-form expressions for the flat coordinates of the Saito metric and the Frobenius prepotentials in all Dynkin types, compute the topological degree of the Lyashko-Looijenga mapping for certain higher genus Hurwitz space strata, and construct hydrodynamic bihamiltonian hierarchies (in both Lax-Sato and Hamiltonian form) that are root-theoretic generalisations of the long-wave limit of the extended Toda hierarchy.

Compactifications of moduli spaces inspired by mirror symmetry

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of nonlinear sigma-models on Calabi-Yau manifolds, using the one-loop semiclassical approximation. The data being parameterized includes a choice of complex structure on the manifold, as well as some ``extra structure'' described by means of classes in H^2. The expectation that this moduli space is well-behaved in these ``extra structure'' directions leads us to formulate a simple and compelling conjecture about the action of the automorphism group on the K\"ahler cone. If true, it allows one to apply Looijenga's ``semi-toric'' technique to construct a partial compactification of the moduli space. We explore the implications which this construction has concerning the properties of the moduli space of complex structures on a ``mirror partner'' of the original Calabi-Yau manifold. We also discuss how a similarity which might have been noticed between certain work of Mumford and of Mori from the 1970's produces (with hindsight) evidence for mirror symmetry which was available in 1979. Abstract:Generalized global symmetries are a common feature of many quantum field theories decoupled from gravity. By contrast, in quantum gravity / the Swampland program, it is widely expected that all global symmetries are either gauged or broken, and this breaking is in turn related to the expected completeness of the spectrum of charged states in quantum gravity. We investigate the fate of such symmetries in the context of 7D and 5D vacua realized by compact Calabi-Yau spaces with localized singularities in M-theory. We explicitly show how gravitational backgrounds support additional dynamical degrees of freedom which trivialize (i.e.,"break") the higher symmetries of the local geometric models. Local compatability conditions across these different sectors lead to gluing conditions for gauging higher-form and (in the 5D case) higher-group symmetries. This also leads to a preferred global structure of the gauge group and higher-form gauge symmetries. In cases based on a genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau space, we also get an F-theory model in one higher dimension with corresponding constraints on the global form of the gauge group.

Mirror symmetry and new approach to constructing orbifolds of Gepner models

Abstract:Motivated by the principles of the conformal bootstrap, primarily the principle of Locality, simultaneously with the requirement of space-time supersymmetry, we reconsider constructions of compactified superstring models. Starting from requirements of space-time supersymmetry and mutual locality, we construct a complete set of physical fields of orbifolds of Gepner models. To technically implement this, we use spectral flow generators to construct all physical fields from the chiral primary fields. The set of these spectral flow operators forms a so-called admissible group $G_{adm}$, which defines a given orbifold. The action of these operators produces a collection of physical fields consistent with the action of supersymmetry generators. The selection of mutually local fields from this collection is carried out using the mirror group $G^*_{adm}$. The permutation of $G_{adm}$ and $G^*_{adm}$ replaces the original orbifold with a mirror one that satisfies the same conditions as the original one. This also implies that the resulting model is modular invariant.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:This is a brief summary of our works [arXiv:1112.4063, arXiv:1201.4501] on constructing higher genus B-model from perturbative quantization of BCOV theory. We analyze Givental's symplectic loop space formalism in the context of B-model geometry on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and explain the Fock space construction via the renormalization techniques of gauge theory. We also give a physics interpretation of the Virasoro constraints as the symmetry of the classical BCOV action functional, and discuss the Virasoro constraints in the quantum theory.

Abstract:Dynamical, metastable supersymmetry breaking appears to be a generic phenomena in supersymmetric field theories. It's simplest implementation is within the so-called "retrofitted O'Raifeartaigh Models". While seemingly flexible, model building in these theories is significantly constrained. In gauge-mediated versions, if the approximate $R$ symmetry of the theory is spontaneously broken, the messenger scale is fixed; if explicitly broken by retrofitted couplings, a very small dimensionless number is required; if supergravity corrections are responsible for the symmetry breaking, at least two moderately small couplings are required, and there is a large range of possible messenger scales. In gravity mediated versions, achieving $m_{3/2} \approx M_Z$ is a problem of discrete tuning. With plausible assumptions, one can't achieve this to better than a factor of 100, perhaps accounting for a {\it little hierarchy} and the surprisingly large value of the Higgs mass.

Abstract:Overwhelming astronomical evidence for dark matter and absence of any laboratory evidence for it despite many dedicated searches have fueled speculation that dark matter may reside in a parallel universe interacting with the familiar universe only via gravitational interactions as well as possibly via some ultra-weak forces. In this scenario, we postulate that the visible universe co-exists with a mirror world consisting of an identical duplicate of forces and matter of our world, obeying a mirror symmetry. This picture, motivated by particle physics considerations, not only provides a natural candidate for dark matter but also has the potential to explain the matter dark matter coincidence problem, i.e., why the dark matter content of the universe is only a few times the visible matter content. One requirement for mirror models is that the mirror world must be colder than our world to maintain the success of big bang nucleosynthesis. After a review of the basic features of the model, we present several new results: first is that the consistency between the coldness of the mirror world and the explanation of the matter dark matter coincidence implies an upper bound on the inflation reheat temperature of the universe to be around 106.5 GeV. We also argue that the coldness implies the mirror world consists mainly of mirror Helium and very little mirror hydrogen, which is the exact opposite of what we see in the visible world.

Minimal massive supergravity and new theories of massive gravity

Abstract:We present an action for minimal massive gravity (MMG) in three dimensions in terms of a dreibein and an independent spin connection. Furthermore, the construction provides an action principle for an infinite family of so-called third-way consistent generalizations of the three-dimensional Einstein field equations, including exotic massive gravity and new higher-order generalizations. It allows to systematically construct the matter couplings for these models, including the couplings to fermions, depending on the spin connection. In particular, we construct different supersymmetric extensions of MMG, and derive their second order fermionic field equations. This establishes a new class of three-dimensional supergravity theories and we discuss their limit to topological massive supergravity. Finally, we identify the landscape of (A)dS vacua of the supersymmetric models. We analyze the spectrum and the unitarity properties of these vacua. We recover the known AdS vacua of MMG which are bulk and boundary unitary.

Abstract:Improper Lorentz Transformations can be retained as exact symmetries of Nature if the particle content and gauge group of the Standard Model are doubled. The resulting ``Exact Parity Model (EPM)'' sees each ordinary particle paired with a mirror analogue. If neutrinos have mass and if they mix, then the EPM predicts that each ordinary neutrino will be maximally mixed with its mirror neutrino partner. This provides a very simple explanation for the very large mixing angle observed for atmospheric muon neutrinos by SuperKamiokande and other experiments. Maximal mixing for electron neutrinos is also well motivated by the solar neutrino problem. If small interfamily mixing is switched on, then the LSND anomaly can also be accomodated by the EPM. The EPM thus provides a unified, simple and to some extent predictive framework for explaining all of the anomalous neutrino data. This talk will briefly review the EPM or mirror neutrino scenario.

Abstract:We first give a complete, albeit brief, review of the discovery of mirror symmetry in $N=2$ string/conformal field theory. In particular, we describe the naturality arguments which led to the initial mirror symmetry conjectures and the subsequent work which established the existence of mirror symmetry through direct construction. We then review a number of striking consequences of mirror symmetry -- both conceptual and calculational. Finally, we describe recent work which introduces a variant on our original proof of the existence of mirror symmetry. This work affirms classical--quantum symmetry duality as well as extends the domain of our initial mirror symmetry construction.

Abstract:This paper, largely written in 2009/2010, fits Landau–Ginzburg models into the mirror symmetry program pursued by the last author jointly with Mark Gross since 2001. This point of view transparently brings in tropical disks of Maslov index 2 via the notion of broken lines, previously introduced in two dimensions by Mark Gross in his study of mirror symmetry for P 2 . A major insight is the equivalence of properness of the Landau–Ginzburg potential with smoothness of the anticanonical divisor on the mirror side. We obtain proper superpotentials which agree on an open part with those classically known for toric varieties. Examples include mirror LG models for non-singular and singular del Pezzo surfaces, Hirzebruch surfaces and some Fano threefolds.

Abstract:We investigate simple extensions of the Mirror Twin Higgs model in which the twin color gauge symmetry and the discrete $Z_2$ mirror symmetry are spontaneously broken. This is accomplished in a minimal way by introducing a single new colored triplet, sextet, or octet scalar field and its twin along with a suitable scalar potential. This spontaneous $Z_2$ breaking allows for a phenomenologically viable alignment of the electroweak vacuum, and leads to dramatic differences between the visible and mirror sectors with regard to the residual gauge symmetries at low energies, color confinement scales, and particle spectra. In particular, several of our models feature a remnant $SU(2)$ or $SO(3)$ twin color gauge symmetry with a very low confinement scale in comparison to $\Lambda_{\rm QCD}$. Furthermore, couplings between the colored scalar and matter provide a new dynamical source of twin fermion masses, and due to the mirror symmetry, these lead to a variety of correlated visible sector effects that can be probed through precision measurements and collider searches.

Abstract:Physical theories are largely dictated by their symmetries. One important conjecture in this vein is that a consistent quantum gravity theory may not possess a global symmetry, but rather only local gauge symmetries, a conjecture which has recently been extended to generalized global symmetries. Historically, this conjecture arose from a heuristic argument using black hole thermodynamics and was recently proven to hold in AdS/CFT. In Horava-Lifshitz gravity, a presumed consistent theory of quantum gravity for which there is strong evidence for both black hole thermodynamics and a holographic construction, spacetime is endowed with a preferred dynamical spacelike foliation. The theory has a leaf reparameterization symmetry that is neither global nor local gauge, hyperbolic and elliptic equations of motion, a lack of splittability, and universal horizon black hole solutions. The reparameterization symmetry is "mixed": it is a local symmetry in one coordinate that remains global on each leaf. More broadly it is an example of both unfree and projectable gauge symmetries. We show how the corresponding charge, which has previously not been considered thermodynamically, coupled with the other features above, resolves some outstanding tensions. Hence this mixed symmetry is not precluded by horizon thermodynamics, but is instead an integral feature. This expands the types of symmetries in quantum gravity compatible with black hole thermodynamics.

Abstract:A bstract We give a general description of gauge symmetry breaking using vertical and remainder fluxes in 4D F-theory models. The fluxes can break a geometric gauge group to a smaller group and induce chiral matter, even when the larger group admits no chiral matter representations. We focus specifically on applications to realizations of the Standard Model gauge group and chiral matter spectrum through breaking of rigid exceptional gauge groups E 7 , E 6 , which are ubiquitous in the 4D F-theory landscape. Supplemented by an intermediate SU(5) group, these large classes of models give natural constructions of Standard Model-like theories with small numbers of generations of matter in F-theory.
