Abstract:Gas-liquid criticality in ionic fluids is studied in exactly soluble spherical models that use interlaced sublattices to represent hard-core \textit{multi}component systems. Short range attractions in the uncharged fluid drive criticality but charged ions do not alter the universality class. Debye screening remains exponential \textit{at} criticality in charge-symmetric 1:1 models. However, \textit{asymmetry} couples charge and density fluctuations in a direct manner: the charge correlation length then diverges precisely as the density correlation length and the Stillinger-Lovett rule is violated \textit{at} criticality.

Criticality in multicomponent spherical models : results and cautions

Abstract:To enable the study of criticality in multicomponent fluids, the standard spherical model is generalized to describe an $\ns$-species hard core lattice gas. On introducing $\ns$ spherical constraints, the free energy may be expressed generally in terms of an $\ns\times\ns$ matrix describing the species interactions. For binary systems, thermodynamic properties have simple expressions, while all the pair correlation functions are combinations of just two eigenmodes. When only hard-core and short-range overall attractive interactions are present, a choice of variables relates the behavior to that of one-component systems. Criticality occurs on a locus terminating a coexistence surface; however, except at some special points, an unexpected ``demagnetization effect'' suppresses the normal divergence of susceptibilities at criticality and distorts two-phase coexistence. This effect, unphysical for fluids, arises from a general lack of symmetry and from the vectorial and multicomponent character of the spherical model. Its origin can be understood via a mean-field treatment of an XY spin system below criticality.

Abstract:Liquid-vapor coexistence curves and critical parameters for hard-core 1:1 electrolyte models with diameter ratios lambda = sigma_{-}/\sigma_{+}=1 to 5.7 have been studied by fine-discretization Monte Carlo methods. Normalizing via the length scale sigma_{+-}=(sigma_{+} + sigma_{-})/2 relevant for the low densities in question, both Tc* (=kB Tc sigma_{+-}/q^2 and rhoc* (= rhoc sigma _{+-}^{3}) decrease rapidly (from ~ 0.05 to 0.03 and 0.08 to 0.04, respectively) as lambda increases. These trends, which unequivocally contradict current theories, are closely mirrored by results for tightly tethered dipolar dimers (with Tc* lower by ~ 0-11% and rhoc* greater by 37-12%).

Abstract:Spatial confinement of a near-critical medium changes its fluctuation spectrum and modifies the corresponding order parameter distribution. These effects result in effective, so-called critical Casimir forces (CCFs) acting on the confining surfaces. These forces are attractive for like boundary conditions of the order parameter at the opposing surfaces of the confinement. For colloidal particles dissolved in a binary liquid mixture acting as a solvent close to its critical point of demixing, one thus expects the emergence of phase segregation into equilibrium colloidal liquid and gas phases. We analyze how such phenomena occur asymmetrically in the whole thermodynamic neighborhood of the consolute point of the binary solvent. By applying field-theoretical methods within mean-field approximation and the semi-empirical de Gennes-Fisher functional, we study the CCFs acting between planar parallel walls as well as between two spherical colloids and their dependence on temperature and on the composition of the near-critical binary mixture. We find that for compositions slightly poor in the molecules preferentially adsorbed at the surfaces, the CCFs are significantly stronger than at the critical composition, thus leading to pronounced colloidal segregation. The segregation phase diagram of the colloid solution following from the calculated effective pair potential between the colloids agrees surprisingly well with experiments and simulations.

Asymmetric Fluid Criticality II: Finite-Size Scaling for Simulations

Abstract:The vapor-liquid critical behavior of intrinsically asymmetric fluids is studied in finite systems of linear dimensions, $L$, focusing on periodic boundary conditions, as appropriate for simulations. The recently propounded ``complete'' thermodynamic $(L\to\infty)$ scaling theory incorporating pressure mixing in the scaling fields as well as corrections to scaling ${[<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/0212145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0212145">arXiv:cond-mat/0212145</a>]}$, is extended to finite $L$, initially in a grand canonical representation. The theory allows for a Yang-Yang anomaly in which, when $L\to\infty$, the second temperature derivative, $(d^{2}\mu_{\sigma}/dT^{2})$, of the chemical potential along the phase boundary, $\mu_{\sigma}(T)$, diverges when $T\to\Tc -$. The finite-size behavior of various special {\em critical loci} in the temperature-density or $(T,\rho)$ plane, in particular, the $k$-inflection susceptibility loci and the $Q$-maximal loci -- derived from $Q_{L}(T,<\rho>_{L}) \equiv < m^{2}>^{2}_{L}/< m^{4}>_{L}$ where $m \equiv \rho - <\rho>_{L}$ -- is carefully elucidated and shown to be of value in estimating $\Tc$ and $\rhoc$. Concrete illustrations are presented for the hard-core square-well fluid and for the restricted primitive model electrolyte including an estimate of the correlation exponent $\nu$ that confirms Ising-type character. The treatment is extended to the canonical representation where further complications appear.

Abstract:High-<i>Z</i> materials exhibit a broad range of variation of the charge state in the hot dense regime, and so ionic structures become complex with increasing density and temperature owing to ionization. Taking high-<i>Z</i> uranium as example, we study its electronic and ionic structures in the hot dense regime by combining an average-atom model with the hypernetted chain approximation. The electronic structure is described by solving the Dirac equation, taking account of relativistic effects, including broadening of the energy levels, and the effect of other ions via correlation functions. On the basis of the electronic distribution around a nucleus, the ion pair potential is constructed using the modified Gordon–Kim model in the frame of temperature-dependent density functional theory. Because of the presence of ion–ion strong coupling, the bridge function is included in the hypernetted chain approximation, which is used to calculate the correlation functions. To take account of the influence on transport properties of the strong correlation of electrons with highly charged ions, we perform both classical and Langevin molecular dynamics simulations to determine ion self-diffusion coefficients and the shear viscosity, using the Green–Kubo relation and an ion–ion pair potential with good convergence. We show that the influence of electron–ion collisions on transport properties becomes more important as the free electron density increases owing to thermal ionization.

Asymmetric Primitive-Model Electrolytes: Debye-Huckel Theory, Criticality and Energy Bounds

Abstract:Debye-Huckel (DH) theory is extended to treat two-component size- and charge-asymmetric primitive models, focussing primarily on the 1:1 additive hard-sphere electrolyte with, say, negative ion diameters, a--, larger than the positive ion diameters, a++. The treatment highlights the crucial importance of the charge-unbalanced ``border zones'' around each ion into which other ions of only one species may penetrate. Extensions of the DH approach which describe the border zones in a physically reasonable way are exact at high $T$ and low density, $\rho$, and, furthermore, are also in substantial agreement with recent simulation predictions for \emph{trends} in the critical parameters, $T_c$ and $\rho_c$, with increasing size asymmetry. Conversely, the simplest linear asymmetric DH description, which fails to account for physically expected behavior in the border zones at low $T$, can violate a new lower bound on the energy (which applies generally to models asymmetric in both charge and size). Other recent theories, including those based on the mean spherical approximation, have predicted trends in the critical parameters quite opposite to those established by the simulations.

Abstract:The electronic density of states, and, hence, the quasiparticle mass on the Fermi surface, is strongly enhanced through electronic correlations in quantum-critical metals. The nature of electronic correlations in such systems can be constrained by comparing different probes of the electronic density of states. Comparative studies in high-Tc superconductors present a significant challenge because of the masking effect of the superconducting phase. In contrast, the normal state can be readily accessed in the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn5, because the energy scale associated with superconductivity is small. Here we use thermal impedance spectroscopy to simultaneously access the electronic density of states in CeCoIn5 in two independent ways; via the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate and via the electronic specific heat. We establish that the temperature- and magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is determined entirely by the electronic density of states on the Fermi surface, where mass enhancement is cut off at high magnetic fields. Surprisingly, the specific heat reveals excess entropy in addition to that associated with the density of states on the Fermi surface. The electronic nature of this excess entropy is evidenced by its suppression in the superconducting state. We postulate that a second 'flavor' of boson generates the observed quantum critical physics beyond the mass renormalization on the Fermi surface in CeCoIn5, and suggest such a multi-flavor character for a broader range of quantum critical metals.

Abstract:We theoretically study the generic mechanisms that could establish critical behavior in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs). The corresponding free energy density terms should exhibit linear coupling with the nematic order parameter and, via this coupling, enhance the nematic order. We consider both temperature- and pressure-driven, order–disorder phase transitions. We derive a scaled effective free energy expression that describes how qualitatively different mechanisms enforce critical behavior. Our main focus is on the impact of nanoparticles (NPs) in homogeneous NP-NLC mixtures. We illustrate that in the case of pressure-driven phase changes, lower concentrations are needed to impose critical point conditions in comparison with pure temperature variations.

Abstract:Different anthropogenic activities have lead to an increase in the exposure of transition metal ions such as , and . In this regard, we have only a limited knowledge about the chemical bonding scenario in the aqueous solvation of these cations. Hence, we employed genetic algorithms, DFT calculations and state-of-the-art methods for the analysis of wave function and DFT electron densities, namely the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) energy partition to address the microhydration of , and . We quantified the charge transfer occurring between the investigated metallic ions and the surrounding water molecules and we related such charge transfer with the stabilisation of these ions within these clusters. The QTAIM and IQA analyses revealed marked cooperative and anticooperative effects in the interactions which involve the metal cation as well as the first and the second solvation shells. As opposed to other ion-dipole contacts, the QTAIM and IQA approaches indicate that covalency plays a preponderant role in the examined interactions. Finally, our results indicate that the simulations of the hydration of the ions considered in this research should take into account, at least to some extent, non-additivity as well as the covalent contributions of the transition metal-water interactions described herein.

From solvent free to dilute electrolytes: Essential components for a continuum theory

Abstract:The increasing number of experimental observations on highly concentrated electrolytes and ionic liquids show qualitative features that are distinct from dilute or moderately concentrated electrolytes, such as self-assembly, multiple-time relaxation, and under-screening, which all impact the emergence of fluid/solid interfaces, and transport in these systems. Since these phenomena are not captured by existing mean field models of electrolytes, there is a paramount need for a continuum framework for highly concentrated electrolytes and ionic liquids. In this work, we present a self-consistent spatiotemporal framework for a ternary composition that comprises ions and solvent employing free energy that consists of short and long range interactions, together with a dissipation mechanism via Onsagers' relations. We show that the model can describe multiple bulk and interfacial morphologies at steady-state. Thus, the dynamic processes in the emergence of distinct morphologies become equally as important as the interactions that are specified in the equilibrium-free energy. The model equations not only provide insights to transport mechanisms beyond the Stokes-Einstein-Smoluchowski relations but also enables to qualitative recovery in the full range (three distinct regions) of non-monotonic electrical screening length that has been recently observed in experiments using organic solvent to dilute ionic liquids.

Theory of thermoreversible gelation and anomalous concentration fluctuations in polyzwitterion solutions

Abstract:We present a theoretical framework to investigate thermoreversible phase transitions within polyzwitterion systems, encompassing macrophase separations (MPS) and gelation. In addition, we explore concentration fluctuations near critical points associated with MPS, as well as tricritical and bicritical points at the intersection of MPS and gelation. By utilizing mean-field percolation theory and field theory formalism, we derive the Landau free energy in terms of polyzwitterion concentration with fixed dipole strengths and other experimental variables, such as temperatures and salt concentrations. As the temperature decreases, the dipoles can form cross-links, resulting in polyzwitterion associations. The associations can grow to a gel network and enhance the propensity for MPS, including liquid-liquid, liquid-gel, and gel-gel phase separations. Remarkably, the associations also impact critical behaviors. Using the renormalization group technique, we find that the critical exponents of the polyzwitterion concentration correlation functions significantly deviate from those in the Ising universality class due to the presence of polyzwitterion associations, leading to crossover critical behaviors.
Structure and aggregation of colloids immersed in critical solvents

Abstract:We consider an ensemble of spherical colloidal particles immersed in a near-critical solvent such as a binary liquid mixture close to its critical demixing point. The emerging long-ranged fluctuations of the corresponding order parameter of the solvent drive the divergence of the correlation length. Spatial confinements of these critical fluctuations by colloidal solute particles, acting as cavities in the fluctuating medium, restrict and modify the fluctuation spectrum in a way which depends on their relative configuration. This results in effective, so-called critical Casimir forces (CCFs) acting on the confining surfaces. Using the available knowledge about CCFs we study the structure and stability of such colloidal suspensions by employing an approach in terms of effective, one-component colloidal systems. Applying the approximation of pairwise additive CCFs we calculate the radial distribution function of the colloids, which is experimentally accessible. We analyze colloidal aggregation due to CCFs and thus allude to previous experimental studies which are still under debate.
Effective charges and virial pressure of concentrated macroion solutions

Abstract:The stability of colloidal suspensions is crucial in a wide variety of processes including the fabrication of photonic materials and scaffolds for biological assemblies. The ionic strength of the electrolyte that suspends charged colloids is widely used to control the physical properties of colloidal suspensions. The extensively used two-body Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) approach allows for a quantitative analysis of the effective electrostatic forces between colloidal particles. DLVO relates the ionic double-layers, which enclose the particles, to their effective electrostatic repulsion. Nevertheless, the double layer is distorted at high macroion volume fractions. Therefore, DLVO cannot describe the many-body effects that arise in concentrated suspensions. We show that this problem can be largely resolved by identifying effective point charges for the macroions using cell theory. This extrapolated point charge (EPC) method assigns effective point charges in a consistent way, taking into account the excluded volume of highly charged macroions at any concentration, and thereby naturally accounting for high volume fractions in both salt-free and added-salt conditions. We provide an analytical expression for the effective pair potential and validate the EPC method by comparing molecular dynamics simulations of macroions and monovalent microions that interact via Coulombic potentials to simulations of macroions interacting via the derived EPC effective potential. The simulations reproduce the macroion-macroion spatial correlation and the virial pressure obtained with the EPC model. Our findings provide a route to relate the physical properties such as pressure in systems of screened-Coulomb particles to experimental measurements.

While the low-energy behavior of bosons is determined by isolated points in momentum space, dense Fermi systems are governed by a manifold of codimension one. For generic systems it was shown by Landau in his theory of Fermi liquids how to deal with this issue. For metals near a quantum critical point, singularities in the fermion-fermion scattering amplitude are expected that go beyond the ones captured by Landau’s theory. Thus, Fermi liquid theory, that has been the foundation of the theory of metals in two and three dimensions, may not apply. Abstract:In concentrated electrolytes with asymmetric or irregular ions, such as ionic liquids and solvent-in-salt electrolytes, ion association is more complicated than simple ion-pairing. Large branched aggregates can form at significant concentrations at even moderate salt concentrations. When the extent of ion association reaches a certain threshold, a percolating ionic gel network can form spontaneously. Gelation is a phenomenon that is well known in polymer physics, but it is practically unstudied in concentrated electrolytes. However, despite this fact, the ion-pairing description is often applied to these systems for the sake of simplicity. In this work, drawing strongly from established theories in polymer physics, we develop a simple thermodynamic model of reversible ionic aggregation and gelation in concentrated electrolytes accounting for the competition between ion solvation and ion association. Our model describes, with the use of several phenomenological parameters, the populations of ionic clusters of different sizes as a function of salt concentration; it captures the onset of ionic gelation and also the post-gel partitioning of ions into the gel. We discuss the applicability of our model, as well as the implications of its predictions on thermodynamic, transport, and rheological properties.
Effects of aerogel-like disorder on the critical behavior of O(m)-vector models. Recent simulations and experimental evidences

Abstract:We review some results on the effect of a specific type of quenched disorder on well known O(m)-vector models in three dimension. Evidences of changes of criticality in both systems, when confined in aerogel pores, are briefly referenced. The 3DXY model (m=2) represents the universality class to which the \lambda-transition of bulk superfluid $^4$He belongs. Experiments report changes of critical exponents for this transition, when superfluid $^4$He is confined in aerogels. Numerical results of the 3DXY model, confined in aerogel-like structures, are in agreement with experiments. Both results seem to contradict Harris criterion: being the specific heat exponent negative for the pure system, changes must be explained in terms of the extended criterion due to Weinrib and Halperin, which requires disorder to be long-range correlated (LRC) at all scales. Aerogels are fractal through some decades only, and present crossovers to homogeneous regimes at finite scales, so the violation to Harris criterion persists. The apparent violation has been explained in terms of hidden LRC subsets within aerogels $[$Phys. Rev. Lett., 2003, {\bf 90}, 170602$]$. On the other hand, experiments on the liquid-vapor (LV) transition of $^4$He and N$_2$ confined in aerogels, also showed changes in critical-point exponents. Being the LV critical-point in the O(1) universality class, criticality may be affected by both, short-range correlated (SRC) and LRC subsets ofdisorder. Simulations of the 3DIS in DLCA aerogels can corroborate experimental results. Experiments and simulations both suggest a shift in critical exponents to values closer to the SRC instead of those of the LRC fixed point.

Ionic Interactions in Biological and Physical Systems: a Variational Treatment

Abstract:Chemistry is about chemical reactions. Chemistry is about electrons changing their configurations as atoms and molecules react. Chemistry studies reactions as if they occurred in ideal infinitely dilute solutions. But most reactions occur in nonideal solutions. Then everything (charged) interacts with everything else (charged) through the electric field, which is short and long range extending to boundaries of the system. Mathematics has recently been developed to deal with interacting systems of this sort. The variational theory of complex fluids has spawned the theory of liquid crystals. In my view, ionic solutions should be viewed as complex fluids. In both biology and electrochemistry ionic solutions are mixtures highly concentrated (~10M) where they are most important, near electrodes, nucleic acids, enzymes, and ion channels. Calcium is always involved in biological solutions because its concentration in a particular location is the signal that controls many biological functions. Such interacting systems are not simple fluids, and it is no wonder that analysis of interactions, such as the Hofmeister series, rooted in that tradition, has not succeeded as one would hope. We present a variational treatment of hard spheres in a frictional dielectric. The theory automatically extends to spatially nonuniform boundary conditions and the nonequilibrium systems and flows they produce. The theory is unavoidably self-consistent since differential equations are derived (not assumed) from models of (Helmholtz free) energy and dissipation of the electrolyte. The origin of the Hofmeister series is (in my view) an inverse problem that becomes well posed when enough data from disjoint experimental traditions are interpreted with a self-consistent theory.

Abstract:We compute transport and thermodynamic properties of a two-band spin-fermion model describing itinerant fermions in two dimensions interacting via $Z_2$ antiferromagnetic quantum critical fluctuations by means of a sign-problem-free quantum Monte-Carlo approach. We show that the phase diagram of this model indeed contains a $d$-wave superconducting phase at low enough temperatures. However, a crucial question that arises is whether a non-Fermi-liquid metallic regime exists above $T_c$ exhibiting hallmark strange-metal transport phenomenology. Interestingly, we find that this version of the model describes a non-Fermi-liquid metallic regime that displays an approximately $T$-linear resistivity above $T_c$ for a strong fermion-boson interaction. Using Nernst-Einstein relation, our QMC results also show that this strange metal phase exhibits a crossover from being characterized by a charge compressibility given approximately by $\chi_{c}\sim 1/T$ at high temperatures to being described by a charge diffusivity consistent with the scaling $D_{c}\sim 1/T$ at low temperatures. Therefore, our work adds support to the view that the $Z_2$ antiferromagnetic spin-fermion model at strong coupling can be considered a minimal model that describes both unconventional superconductivity and strange metallicity, which are fundamentally interconnected in many important strongly-correlated quantum materials.

Abstract:In this brief review I will discuss criticality in strongly correlated fluids. Unlike simple fluids, molecules of which interact through short ranged isotropic potential, particles of strongly correlated fluids usually interact through long ranged forces of Coulomb or dipolar form. While for simple fluids mechanism of phase separation into liquid and gas was elucidated by van der Waals more than a century ago, the universality class of strongly correlated fluids, or in some cases even existence of liquid-gas phase separation remains uncertain.
