Abstract:A brief history of the study of fluctuations in high energy nuclear collisions at the CERN SPS performed by NA49 is presented. The ideas and the corresponding experimental data on fluctuations are discussed from the point of view of their sensitivity to the onset of deconfinement.

Abstract:Sawfishes (Pristidae) are large, highly threatened rays named for their tooth‐studded rostrum, which is used for prey sensing and capture. To better understand the genetic underpinnings of these unique animals, we used RNA‐seq data from multiple tissues to annotate a publicly available genome and compared this data to other elasmobranchs. Evidence of unique positive selection was seen in Pristis pectinata in genes related to growth factor signaling and organ symmetry, suggesting a role in morphogenesis. Data acquired also allowed examination of electrosensory components. Sawfishes (Pristidae) are large, highly threatened rays named for their tooth‐studded rostrum, which is used for prey sensing and capture. Of all five species, the smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata, has experienced the greatest decline in range, currently found in only ~20% of its historic range. To better understand the genetic underpinnings of these taxonomically and morphologically unique animals, we collected transcriptomic data from several tissue types, mapped them to the recently completed reference genome, and contrasted the patterns observed with comparable data from other elasmobranchs. Evidence of positive selection was detected in 79 genes in P. pectinata, several of which are involved in growth factor/receptor tyrosine kinase signaling and body symmetry and may be related to the unique morphology of sawfishes. Changes in these genes may impact cellular responses to environmental conditions such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. Data acquired also allow for examination of the molecular components of P. pectinata electrosensory systems, which are highly developed in sawfishes and have likely been influential in their evolutionary success.

Morphometry and microanatomy of the barbels of the common sawshark Pristiophorus cirratus (Pristiophoridae): implications for pristiophorid behaviour

Abstract:The internal anatomy of the barbels of the common sawshark Pristiophorus cirratus was examined with light microscopy to clarify their sensory role. No sensory structures such as taste buds (chemoreception), ampullae of Lorenzini (electroreception) or free neuromasts (lateral line mechanoreception) could be located in the barbels. The presence of bundles of nerve fibres, however, indicates a tactile function for the barbels. Conveyance of information regarding potentially damaging stimuli (nociception) and temperature (thermoception) cannot be excluded at this stage. It is hypothesized that the barbels are used by P. cirratus to locate prey in both the water column and on the substratum via wake detection and sensing changes in surface texture. The barbels may also be involved in the detection of water currents for rheotaxis. Regression analyses on P. cirratus morphometric data showed that the width of the rostrum at two sections (the barbels and the rostrum tip) does not significantly correlate with total length. The regression analyses also suggested that the barbels of P. cirratus may be lateralised.
Ectoparasites of the critically endangered green sawfish Pristis zijsron and sympatric elasmobranchs in Western Australia

Abstract:This study reports the metazoan ectoparasite fauna of juvenile Critically Endangered green sawfish, Pristis zijsron , and sympatric elasmobranchs in Western Australia. Five parasite taxa were found on 76 screened P. zijsron : Caligus furcisetifer (Copepoda: Caligidae), Dermopristis pterophila (Monogenea: Microbothriidae), Branchellion plicobranchus and Stibarobdella macrothela (Hirudinea: Piscicolidae), and praniza larvae of an unidentified gnathiid isopod. Only C . furcisetifer and D . pterophila were common, exhibiting discrepant site-specificity, with C . furcisetifer occurring mostly on the head and rostrum, and D . pterophila around the pectoral and pelvic fins. Intensity of infection for C . furcisetifer and D . pterophila increased with host total length and was influenced by host sex, but in opposite directions; intensity of C . furcisetifer was greater on female P. zijsron , whereas intensity of D . pterophila was greater on males. In the Ashburton River, likelihood of infection for C . furcisetifer and D . pterophila on P. zijsron increased with time since substantial freshwater discharge events, suggesting decreased salinity impacts both taxa. In addition to P. zijsron , five other sympatric elasmobranch species were opportunistically screened for ectoparasites in the study area: the giant shovelnose ray, Glaucostegus typus , the eyebrow wedgefish, Rhynchobatus palpebratus , the nervous shark, Carcharhinus cautus , the lemon shark, Negaprion acutidens , and the graceful shark, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchoides . Caligus furcisetifer was found on R. palpebratus ; no other parasites of P. zijsron were found on other sympatric elasmobranch species. Conversely, Perissopus dentatus (Copepoda: Pandaridae) was found on all three carcharhinids but not on batoid rays ( P. zijsron , G. typus or R . palpebratus ).

Abstract:The green sawfish Pristis zijsron (Bleeker, 1851), a species of sawfish in the family Pristidae (Rhinopristiformes), mainly inhabits the Indo-West Pacific region. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of the critically endangered green sawfish is first described. The length of the genome is 16,804 bp, with a nucleotide composition of 32.0% A, 24.8% C, 13.1% G, and 30.0% T. It contains 37 genes in the typical gene order of fish. Two start (GTG and ATG) and two stop (TAG and TAA/T-) codons are found in the thirteen protein-coding genes. The 22 tRNA genes range from 67 bp (tRNA-Ser) to 75 bp (tRNA-Leu). The ratio of nonsynonymous substitution (Ka) and synonymous substitution (Ks) indicates that the family Pristidae are suffering a purifying selection. The reconstruction of Bayesian inference and the maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree show the same topological structure, and the family Pristidae is a monophyletic group with strong posterior probability. Pristis zijsron and P. pectinata form a sister group in the terminal clade. And the divergence time of Rhinopristiformes show that P. zijsron and P. pectinata diverged as two separate species in about Paleogene 31.53 Mya. Complete mitochondrial genomes of all five sawfishes have been published and phylogenetic relationships have been analyzed. The results of our study will provide base molecular information for subsequent research (e.g., distribution, conservation, phylogenetics, etc.) on this endangered group.

Comparative morphology of the oropharyngeal denticles in the order Rhinopristiformes and its functional implications (Chondrichthyes: Batoidea)

Abstract:‐ Oropharyngeal denticles vary widely in shape, relief and orientation between pharynx regions, genera and families within the order Rhinopristiformes. ‐ Four new morphological characters are proposed and could be useful for taxonomic and systematic purposes. ‐ Evidence of secondary sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic variation in oropharyngeal denticles was found for Zapteryx brevirostris. Guitarfishes and sawfishes are included in the order Rhinopristiformes, which currently encompasses five families: Pristidae, Rhinobatidae, Trygonorrhinidae, Rhinidae and Glaucostegidae. Considering the low number of studies focused on oral structures in Rhinopristiformes and the need to better understand their internal morphology, this study aimed to (1) evaluate and describe the morphological variation of the oropharyngeal denticles of guitarfishes and sawfish; (2) evaluate and describe the ontogenetic and sexual variation of the oropharyngeal denticles of Zapteryx brevirostris; (3) propose characters potentially useful for taxonomic and systematic purposes and (4) discuss the possible functions and advantages of these structures. Tissue samples were taken from the oropharyngeal region of specimens preserved in 70% alcohol and then prepared for visualization in scanning electron microscopy. A new method for sampling the pharynx region is proposed herein. Considerable morphological variation between families and genera was observed. However, no variation between conspecifics was found. Regional variations of denticles when examining a single individual were observed in shape, ornamentation, and orientation. In Zapteryx brevirostris, males had a significantly higher density of denticles in the ventral region than females and lower densities were observed in juveniles. The four characters discussed here are based on the presence of keels, number of cusps, distal end elongation and width/length ratio of the oropharyngeal denticles. Among the possible functions and advantages of these structures are the improvement of food adherence, tissue protection against food abrasion and parasitism, and attenuation of hydrodynamic drag in the oropharyngeal cavity during food ingestion.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, single nucleotide polymorphisms were used to investigate kinship and philopatry for the Critically Endangered green sawfish, Pristis zijsron , in Western Australia. Sampling was conducted in an important nursery area: the Ashburton River estuary and adjacent tidal creeks. Kinship was inferred from the genotypes of 104 sawfish sampled between 2011 and 2014 ( n = 31), and 2020 and 2022 ( n = 73). The total number of dams contributing across all sites and time periods was estimated to be between 50 and 56. Fifty‐two full sibling dyads, 90 half sibling dyads and 72 third‐degree dyads were detected, involving 58, 67, and 46 P. zijsron , respectively. Of these, 34 half sibling dyads were related maternally and 56 related paternally, including multiple maternal and paternal half siblings pupped in different years, suggesting both female and male philopatry. Catch data indicated that two groups of maternal half siblings were littermates, demonstrating multiple paternity. A high degree of relatedness was found across the study area, with 88% of P. zijsron related to at least one other individual up to the third‐degree. Evidence for female philopatry in P. zijsron highlights the importance of protecting nursery areas for this species. The occurrence of philopatric behaviour in male and female P. zijsron suggests that dispersal might be limited in both sexes of this species, highlighting the need to investigate the amount of genetic diversity and incidence of inbreeding within remaining populations.

Abstract:Sawfishes are considered one of the most threatened marine fish taxa globally, with major contractions in their geographic range documented over the last 50 years across all oceans. Two sawfish species used to be found in Mexico, but a historical lack of research and first-hand baseline information recently raised concerns about the fate of both species there. Recent Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) and environmental DNA (eDNA) research has shown that: a) Pristis pectinata and P. pristis were formerly abundant and widely distributed in the Mexican Atlantic coast, and the latter also in the Mexican Pacific coast, and b) sawfishes (at least P. pectinata ) are still found in some coastal refugia in central Veracruz state and Campeche state on the Atlantic coast. In the present research we developed improved primers that allow for better species ID resolution for Pristis pectinata and P. pristis through successful sequencing of eDNA samples by amplifying a 270 bp fragment of the CO1 gene. Our results based on the analysis of 305 eDNA samples showed an improved positive species identification rate through sequencing, demonstrate that P. pectinata occurs in other coastal refugia along the Yucatán Peninsula in the Mexican Caribbean, and suggest this species might be extirpated from southern Veracruz, while no P. pristis eDNA has been found along the Atlantic coast.

Abstract:The debate about the origin of the vertebrate dentition has been given fresh fuel by new fossil discoveries and developmental studies of extant animals. Odontodes (teeth or tooth-like structures) can be found in two distinct regions, the 'internal' oropharyngeal cavity and the 'external' skin. A recent hypothesis argues that regularly patterned odontodes is a specific oropharyngeal feature, whereas odontodes in the external skeleton lack this organization. However, this argument relies on the skeletal system of modern chondrichthyans (sharks and their relatives), which differ from other gnathostome (jawed vertebrate) groups in not having dermal bones associated with the odontodes. Their external skeleton is also composed of monoodontode 'placoid scales', whereas the scales of most early fossil gnathostomes are polyodontode, i.e. constructed from several odontodes on a shared bony base. Propagation phase contrast X-ray Synchrotron microtomography (PPC-SRµCT) is used to study the polyodontode scales of the early bony fish Andreolepis hedei. The odontodes constructing a single scale are reconstructed in 3D, and a linear and regular growth mechanism similar to that in a gnathostome dentition is confirmed, together with a second, gap-filling growth mechanism. Acanthodian tooth whorls are described, which show that ossification of the whorl base preceded and probably patterned the development of the dental lamina, in contrast to the condition in sharks where the dental lamina develops early and patterns the dentition.The new findings reveal, for the first time, how polyodontode scales grow in 3D in an extinct bony fish. They show that dentition-like odontode patterning occurs on scales and that the primary patterning unit of a tooth whorl may be the bony base rather than the odontodes it carries. These results contradict the hypothesis that oropharyngeal and external odontode skeletons are fundamentally separate and suggest that the importance of dermal bone interactions to odontode patterning has been underestimated.

Abstract:Newly discovered fossils from the Silurian and Devonian periods are beginning to challenge embedded perceptions about the origin and early diversification of jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes). Nevertheless, an explicit cladistic framework for the relationships of these fossils relative to the principal crown lineages of the jawed vertebrates (osteichthyans: bony fishes and tetrapods; chondrichthyans: sharks, batoids, and chimaeras) remains elusive. We critically review the systematics and character distributions of early gnathostomes and provide a clearly stated hierarchy of synapomorphies covering the jaw-bearing stem gnathostomes and osteichthyan and chondrichthyan stem groups. We show that character lists, designed to support the monophyly of putative groups, tend to overstate their strength and lack cladistic corroboration. By contrast, synapomorphic hierarchies are more open to refutation and must explicitly confront conflicting evidence. Our proposed synapomorphy scheme is used to evaluate the status of the problematic fossil groups Acanthodii and Placodermi, and suggest profitable avenues for future research. We interpret placoderms as a paraphyletic array of stem-group gnathostomes, and suggest what we regard as two equally plausible placements of acanthodians: exclusively on the chondrichthyan stem, or distributed on both the chondrichthyan and osteichthyan stems.

Effects of marine debris and human interactions on the smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata)

Abstract:Although conservation efforts have reduced threats, the endangered smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata, is still at risk from anthropogenic effects such as entanglement in recreational and commercial fishing gear. From 2017 to 2021, data from field research and the public in Florida documented 176 individuals that were entangled, injured, or killed by debris or human interactions. While entanglements in fishing gear (e.g., trawls, fishing tackle) remain the most frequent threat, interactions with household items have increased. Since 2017, 30 sawfish were reported with encircling debris (e.g., monofilament loops, rubber bands, ball bungee cords) around anterior parts of their bodies. Ball bungee cords have emerged as a problem, likely related to the popularity of their use in securing boat lift canopy covers. Collectively, encircling items have interfered with eye, spiracle, gill, and mouth function. Continued outreach is a priority to address these pollutants, their sources (e.g., manufacturers), and their effects on recovery.
Historical specimens and photographs reveal long‐term changes in Smalltooth Sawfish ( Pristis pectinata ) age class distribution and average size during U.S. population decline

Abstract:Abstract Population‐level, historical studies can provide insights on the distribution, abundance and demographic characteristics of imperiled species prior to human exploitation, habitat modification or climate change. These studies provide a baseline for contemporary data, which often shape successful management and recovery. The smalltooth sawfish ( Pristis pectinata ) occupies ~20% of its historical range due to declines driven primarily by mortalities in fisheries and coastal habitat loss over the last century. As a result, they are listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species and as Endangered federally in the United States (U.S.). Because P. pectinata grow to a large size and have a toothed rostrum, many historical photographs and specimens are archived in natural history collections. Metadata and morphometric data were collected and analysed from P. pectinata photographs ( n = 84) and specimens ( n = 429) to evaluate temporal changes in average size and historical distribution of five age classes in U.S. waters. Historically, smaller age classes were well‐distributed throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico, while only larger age classes were recorded on the U.S. east coast, north of Florida. All age classes were found in both Florida and Texas historically, but records from Texas decline after the 1980s and remain persistent in Florida, indicative of a strong‐hold for the U.S. population. Regardless of origin, individuals in three of the five age classes were larger on average historically than those observed today. Understanding which age classes used previously occupied areas will help direct habitat restoration efforts and support recovery, especially in the face of climate change. Non‐traditional data sources, such as those used here, may often be the only means of providing historical context to modern research on imperiled species, ultimately guiding restoration and conservation efforts.

Phylogenomics of the Neotropical fish family Serrasalmidae with a novel intrafamilial classification (Teleostei: Characiformes)

Abstract:The Neotropical fish family Serrasalmidae comprises 16 extant genera and 101 species widespread through major Neotropical rivers with relevant importance for regional fisheries and aquaculture. The monophyly of Serrasalmidae and the recognition of three main clades are recurrent between morphological and molecular phylogenies. However, both intergeneric and interspecific relationships within each of those clades remain uncertain. Here, we used 81 terminals of 69 species (68%) and all 16 genera of Serrasalmidae to sequence 1553 loci of ultraconserved elements (UCEs), multiple nuclear loci widely applied in phylogenetic studies, and performed maximum likelihood, Bayesian, and species tree analyses. We obtained highly supported phylogenies in all applied methods corroborating the monophyly of Serrasalmidae and the three-clade hypotheses herein proposed as two subfamilies and two tribes: (Colossomatinae (Serrasalminae (Myleini + Serrasalmini))). Morphological features for each subfamily involve the absence (Colossomatinae) or presence (Serrasalminae) of a pre-dorsal spine. Morphological diagnoses among tribes include the pre-dorsal spine being continuous (Myleini) or discontinuous (Serrasalmini) relative to the first unbranched dorsal-fin ray. Our results highlight the complexity of the relationships especially the non-monophyly of Myleus, Mylesinus, Myloplus, Tometes, and Utiaritichthys within Myleini, as well as of Serrasalmus and Pristobrycon within Serrasalmini.
The Tree of Life and a New Classification of Bony Fishes

Abstract:The tree of life of fishes is in a state of flux because we still lack a comprehensive phylogeny that includes all major groups. The situation is most critical for a large clade of spiny-finned fishes, traditionally referred to as percomorphs, whose uncertain relationships have plagued ichthyologists for over a century. Most of what we know about the higher-level relationships among fish lineages has been based on morphology, but rapid influx of molecular studies is changing many established systematic concepts. We report a comprehensive molecular phylogeny for bony fishes that includes representatives of all major lineages. DNA sequence data for 21 molecular markers (one mitochondrial and 20 nuclear genes) were collected for 1410 bony fish taxa, plus four tetrapod species and two chondrichthyan outgroups (total 1416 terminals). Bony fish diversity is represented by 1093 genera, 369 families, and all traditionally recognized orders. The maximum likelihood tree provides unprecedented resolution and high bootstrap support for most backbone nodes, defining for the first time a global phylogeny of fishes. The general structure of the tree is in agreement with expectations from previous morphological and molecular studies, but significant new clades arise. Most interestingly, the high degree of uncertainty among percomorphs is now resolved into nine well-supported supraordinal groups. The order Perciformes, considered by many a polyphyletic taxonomic waste basket, is defined for the first time as a monophyletic group in the global phylogeny. A new classification that reflects our phylogenetic hypothesis is proposed to facilitate communication about the newly found structure of the tree of life of fishes. Finally, the molecular phylogeny is calibrated using 60 fossil constraints to produce a comprehensive time tree. The new time-calibrated phylogeny will provide the basis for and stimulate new comparative studies to better understand the evolution of the amazing diversity of fishes.
Micro-CT Based Description of Dorsetichthys bechei (Actinopterygii: Teleostei): Cranial Anatomy of an Iconic Early Teleost

Abstract:Teleost fishes comprise more than 36,000 living vertebrate species and occupy a wide range of aquatic ecosystems. Despite their overwhelming success, extinct taxa outside of the living radiation-stem teleosts-remain poorly understood. Dorsetichthys bechei is an Early Jurassic stem teleost of historic importance. Although D. bechei is well described, its proximity to the teleost crown and relationships with other stem teleosts is challenging due to previous associations with the wastebasket assemblage known as 'pholidophorids'. Here we present a new, three-dimensionally preserved specimen of Dorsetichthys bechei from the Blue Lias Formation (Sinemurian) Lyme Regis, UK. High-resolution CT scanning of this specimen plus additional material reveals previously unknown internal morphological information, including of the jaw and palate, hyoid arch, and gill skeleton. Importantly, this previously undescribed articulated specimen permits description of the external dermal skeleton and internal endoskeleton for the same individual, clarifying past accounts drawing on composite descriptions of two- and three-dimensionally preserved specimens. We confirm the presence of important teleost synapomorphies such as a mobile premaxilla and quadratojugal process. However, contrasting previous accounts, we find no evidence for dorsal and ventral hypohyals or a postarticular process of the lower jaw. We also confirm the presence of a prearticular. The presence of a mobile upper jaw, elaborate gill rakers and reduced dentition also support a possible facultative filter feeding ecology. These new anatomical data support removal of D. bechei from Pholidophoridae and Pholidophoriformes as currently defined but indicate that finer-scale patterns of relationships among more crownward members of the teleost stem are some way from being resolved.

Evolution, development, and regeneration of tooth-like epithelial appendages in sharks

Abstract:Sharks and their relatives are typically covered in highly specialized epithelial appendages embedded in the skin called dermal denticles; ancient tooth-like units (odontodes) composed of dentine and enamel-like tissues. These 'skin teeth' are remarkably similar to oral teeth of vertebrates and share comparable morphological and genetic signatures. Here we review the histological and morphological data from embryonic sharks to uncover characters that unite all tooth-like elements (odontodes), including teeth and skin denticles in sharks. In addition, we review the differences between the skin and oral odontodes that reflect their varied capacity for renewal. Our observations have begun to decipher the developmental and genetic shifts that separate these seemingly similar dental units, including elements of the regenerative nature in both oral teeth and the emerging skin denticles from the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) and other chondrichthyan models. Ultimately, we ask what defines a tooth at both the molecular and morphological level. These insights aim to help us understand how nature makes, replaces and evolves a vast array of odontodes.
Intraspecific dental variations in the deep-sea shark Etmopterus spinax and their significance in the fossil record

Abstract:Abstract An important character on several taxonomic levels for shark identification is the tooth morphology. Sharks show a variety of highly specialized dentitions reflecting adaptations to their feeding habits. Intraspecific variation of tooth morphology such as sexual or ontogenetic dimorphism is poorly known in many species, even though tooth morphology plays a decisive role in the characterization of the fossil record of sharks, which comprises mostly fossil teeth. Here we analyzed the dentition of 40 jaws of the Velvet Belly Lantern Shark Etmopterus spinax and identified ontogenetic and sexual dimorphic characters such as total number of teeth, number of upper teeth, cusplet numbers in upper jaw teeth and width of lower jaw teeth. Dimorphic characters may reduce intraspecific competition for food, as E. spinax segregates by sex and size and may allow for identifying the male sex. The lower jaw tooth height, a sexually non-dimorphic character, was used to re-calculate the total length of specimens, which represents the first such approach for a squaliform shark. Results derived from the extant E. spinax are subsequently applied to fossil Etmopterus sp. teeth (Miocene) to gain individual information such as sex or size, but also characterize the extinct population from the excavation site by a size distribution profile in comparison to data from extant populations. This approach indicates the presence of multiple ontogenetic stages in the extinct population.

Abstract:Otolith (sagitta) morphology is described in six tropical fish species belonged to different genera of the suborder Scorpaenoidei: Synanceia horrida , Inimicus sinensis , Parascorpaena picta , Sebastapistes cyanostigma , Scorpaenopsis papuensis , and Dendrochirus zebra . Based on otolith shape (six shape indices and elliptic Fourier analysis), S. horrida is similar to Sc. papuensis and I. sinensis is similar to D. zebra . A comparison of otolith shape in P. picta , D. zebra , and three species of the family Sebastidae ( Helicolenus dactylopterus , Sebastes semicinctus , and S. hopkinsi ) using elliptic Fourier and principal component analyses shows that the clusters of H. dactylopterus and S. semicinctus partly overlap with the cluster of D. zebra , and the cluster of S. hopkinsi partly overlaps with the cluster of P. picta . The data on otolith shape do not correspond with current phylogenetic schemes that indicates relative independence of the inner ear evolution.

Abstract:The lifelong tooth replacement in elasmobranch fishes (sharks, rays and skates) has led to the assemblage of a great number of teeth from fossil and extant species, rendering tooth morphology an important character for taxonomic descriptions, analysing phylogenetic interrelationships and deciphering their evolutionary history (e.g. origination, divergence, extinction). Heterodonty (exhibition of different tooth morphologies) occurs in most elasmobranch species and has proven to be one of the main challenges for these analyses. Although numerous shark species are discovered and described every year, detailed descriptions of tooth morphologies and heterodonty patterns are lacking or are only insufficiently known for most species. Here, we use landmark-based 2D geometric morphometrics on teeth of the tiger shark Galeocerdo cuvier to analyse and describe dental heterodonties among four different ontogenetic stages ranging from embryo to adult. Our results reveal rather gradual and subtle ontogenetic shape changes, mostly characterized by increasing size and complexity of the teeth. We furthermore provide the first comprehensive description of embryonic dental morphologies in tiger sharks. Also, tooth shapes of tiger sharks in different ontogenetic stages are re-assessed and depicted in detail. Finally, multiple cases of tooth file reversal are described. This study, therefore, contributes to our knowledge of dental traits across ontogeny in the extant tiger shark G. cuvier and provides a baseline for further morphological and genetic studies on the dental variation in sharks. Therefore, it has the potential to assist elucidating the underlying developmental and evolutionary processes behind the vast dental diversity observed in elasmobranch fishes today and in deep time.

Abstract:Cartilaginous fishes (chimeras and elasmobranches -sharks, skates and rays) hold a key phylogenetic position to explore the origin and diversifications of jawed vertebrates. Here, we report reference genomic, transcriptomic and phenotypic data in the small spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula, and integrate these data to shed light on the evolution of sensory organs. We first characterise general aspects of the catshark genome, confirming the high conservation of genome organisation across cartilaginous fishes, and investigating population genomic signatures. Taking advantage of a dense sampling of transcriptomic data, we also identify gene signatures for all major organs, including chondrichthyan specializations, and evaluate expression diversifications between paralogs within major gene families involved in sensory functions. Finally, we combine these data with 3D imaging and in situ gene expression analyses to explore chondrichthyan-specific traits and more general evolutionary trends of sensory systems. This approach brings to light, among others, novel markers of the ampullae of Lorenzini electro-sensory cells, a duplication hotspot for crystallin genes conserved in jawed vertebrates, and a new metazoan clade of the Transient-receptor potential (TRP) family. These resources and results, obtained in an experimentally tractable chondrichthyan model, open new avenues to integrate epigenomics, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, for the study of elasmobranchs and vertebrates.

Abstract:This article describes the results of the first investigation of the structure of the seismosensory system (SSS) of Bovichtus variegatus Richardson, 1846 and topography of its seismosensory canals. The variability of individual structures is described and compared to previously studies of the SSS of B. psychrolutes Günther, 1861. A number of similarities and differences in the features of the structure of the SSSs of B. variegatus and B. psychrolutes are noted.
