Abstract:A preliminary analysis of the UBV light curves of RR AB variables revealed that they contain information on the metallicities of these stars. The computed parameters which correlate with metallicity are given in the tables for 99 RR AB stars including 12 variables without previously determined metallicities.

Abstract:We investigate atmospheric properties of 35 stable RRab stars that possess the full ranges of period, light amplitude, and metal abundance found in Galactic RR Lyrae stars. Our results are derived from several thousand echelle spectra obtained over several years with the du Pont telescope of Las Campanas Observatory. Radial velocities of metal lines and the Halpha line were used to construct curves of radial velocity versus pulsation phase. From these we estimated radial velocity amplitudes for metal lines (formed near the photosphere) and Halpha Doppler cores (formed at small optical depths). We also measured Halpha emission fluxes when they appear during primary light rises. Spectra shifted to rest wavelengths, binned into small phase intervals, and coadded were used to perform model atmospheric and abundance analyses. The derived metallicities and those of some previous spectroscopic surveys were combined to produce a new calibration of the Layden abundance scale. We then divided our RRab sample into metal-rich (disk) and metal-poor (halo) groups at [Fe/H]=-1.0. The atmospheres of RRab families, so defined, differ with respect to (a) peak strength of Halpha emission flux, (b) Halpha radial velocity amplitude, (c) dynamical gravity, (d) stellar radius variation, (e) secondary acceleration during the photometric "bump" that precedes minimum light, and (g) duration of Halpha line-doubling. We also detected Halpha line-doubling during the bump in the metal-poor family, but not in the metal-rich one. Though all RRab probably are core helium-burning horizontal branch stars, the metal-rich group appear to be a species sui generis.

On the photometric metallicity of Oosterhoff-type I and II RRab stars

Abstract:We are revising the consistency of photometric metallicity formulae widely used for fundamental-mode RR Lyrae (RRab) variables, based on their V- and I-band light curves, published by Jurcsik and Kovács (1996) and Smolec (2005), respectively. 293 RRab variables belonging to 10 globular clusters, all simultaneously containing stars of both Oosterhoff types, are selected for this purpose. We find that on average, the V-band formula results in higher estimated metallicities by about 0.05 dex than the I-band formula. Moreover, we detect a dependency on the Oosterhoff class of the variables for both formulae, as well. Using the V-band formula, Oo I stars are 0.05-0.10 dex more metal rich than Oo II stars of the same cluster. Although with less significance, but the I-band results indicate a reversed trend. Therefore, we surmise that the average difference we have found between the V- and I-band formulae is the consequence of the total sample being dominated by Oo I variables.

Metallicity estimation of RR Lyrae stars from their I-band light curves

Abstract:We have revisited the problem of metallicity prediction of RR Lyrae stars from their near-infrared light curves in the Cousins I waveband. Our study is based on high-quality time-series photometry and state-of-the-art high-resolution spectroscopic abundance measurements of 80 fundamental-mode (RRab) and 24 first-overtone (RRc) stars, spanning $\sim$[$-2.7$,$+0.18$] dex and $\sim$[$-3$,$-0.5$] dex ranges, respectively. Employing machine-learning methods, we investigated various light-curve representations and regression models to identify their optimal form for our objective. Accurate new empirical relations between the [Fe/H] iron abundance and the light-curve parameters have been obtained using Bayesian regression for both RRab and RRc stars with mean absolute prediction errors of 0.16 and 0.18 dex, respectively. We found that earlier $I$-band [Fe/H] estimates had a systematic positive bias of up to $\sim 0.4$ dex in the metal-poor regime. Our new predictive models were deployed on large ensembles of RR Lyrae stars to obtain photometric metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) for various old stellar populations in and around the Milky Way. We find that the mode of the old bulge component's MDF is approximately $-1.4$ dex, in remarkable agreement with the latest spectroscopic result. Furthermore, we derive MDF modes of $-1.83$, $-2.13$, and $-1.77$ dex for the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, and the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, respectively.

VVV catalog of ab-type RR Lyrae in the inner Galactic bulge

Abstract:Context. Observational evidence has accumulated in the past years, showing that the Galactic bulge includes two populations, a metal poor and a metal rich one that, in addition to a different metallicity, show different alpha over iron abundances, spatial distribution, and kinematics. While the metal rich, barred component has been fairly well characterized, the metal poor, spheroidal component has been more elusive and harder to describe. RR Lyrae variables are clean tracers of the old bulge component, and they are, on average, more metal poor than red clump stars. Aims. In the present paper, we provide a new catalog of 16488 ab type RR Lyrae variables in the bulge region within -10<l<10 and -2.8<b<2.8, extracted from multi epoch PSF photometry performed on VISTA Variable in the Via Lactea survey data. We used the catalog to constrain the shape of the old, metal poor, bulge stellar population. Methods. The identification of ab type RR Lyrae among a large sample of candidate variables of different types has been performed via a combination of a Random Forest classifier and visual inspection... We use the present catalog to derive the shape of their distribution around the Galactic Center, resulting in an elongated spheroid with projected axis ratio b/a~0.7 and inclination angle ~20 degrees. Metal-Rich RRc stars in the Carnegie RR Lyrae Survey

Abstract:We describe and employ a stacking procedure to investigate abundances derived from the low S/N spectra obtained in the Carnegie RR Lyrae Survey (CARRS; Kollmeier et al. 2013). We find iron metallicities that extend from [Fe/H] ~ -2.5 to values at least as large as [Fe/H] ~ -0.5 in the 274-spectrum CARRS RRc data set. We consider RRc sample contamination by high amplitude solar metallicity delta Scuti stars (HADS) at periods less than 0.3 days, where photometric discrimination between RRc and delta Scuti stars has proven to be problematic. We offer a spectroscopic discriminant, the well-marked overabundance of heavy elements, principally [Ba/H], that is a common, if not universal, characteristic of HADS of all periods and axial rotations. No bona fide RRc stars known to us have verified heavy-element overabundances. Three out of 34 stars in our sample with [Fe/H] > -0.7 exhibit anomalously strong features of Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, and many rare earths. However, carbon is not enhanced in these three stars, and we conclude that their elevated n-capture abundances have not been generated in interior neutron-capture nucleosynthesis. Contamination by HADS appears to be unimportant, and metal-rich RRc stars occur in approximately the same proportion in the Galactic field as do metal-rich RRab stars. An apparent dearth of metal-rich RRc is probably a statistical fluke. Finally we show that RRc stars have a similar inverse period-metallicity relationship as has been found for RRab stars.

Globular cluster metallicities and distances from disentangling their RR Lyrae light curves

Abstract:We present mean horizontal branch absolute magnitudes and iron abundances for a sample of 39 globular clusters. These quantities were calculated in an unprecedented homogeneous fashion based on Fourier decomposition of ligt curves of RR Lyrae cluster members. Zero points for the luminosity calibrations are discussed. Our photometrically derived metallicities and distances compare very well with spectroscopic determinations of [Fe/H] and accurate distances obtained using {\sl Gaia} and {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} data. The need to distinguish between the results for RRab and RRc stars for a correct evaluation of the $M_V$--[Fe/H] relation is discussed. For RRab stars, the relation is non-linear, and the horizontal branch structure plays a significant role. For RRc stars, the relation remains linear and tight, and the slope is very shallow. Hence, the RRc stars seem better indicators of the parental cluster distances. Systematic time-series CCD imaging performed over the last 20 years enabled to discover and classify 330 variables in our sample of globular clusters.

Abstract:The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is widely considered a corner-stone of the astronomical distance scale, however a difference of 0.2-0.3 mag exists in its distance as predicted by the "short" and "long" distance scales. Distances to the LMC from Population II objects are founded on the RR Lyrae variables. We have undertaken an observational campaign devoted to the definition of the average apparent luminosity and to the study of the mass-metallicity relation for RR Lyraes in the bar of the LMC. These are compared with analogous quantities for cluster RR Lyraes. The purpose is to see whether an intrinsic difference in luminosity, possibly due to a difference in mass, might exist between field and cluster RR Lyraes, which could be responsible for the well-known dichotomy between "short" and "long" distance scales. Preliminary results are presented on the V and B-V light curves, the average apparent visual magnitude, and the pulsational properties of 102 RR Lyrae in the bar of the LMC, observed at ESO in January 1999. The photometric data are accurately tied to the Johnson photometric system. Comparison is presented with the photometry of RR Lyraes in the bar of the LMC obtained by the MACHO collaboration (Alcock et al. 1996). Our sample includes 9 double-mode RR Lyraes selected from Alcock et al. (1997) for which an estimate of the metal abundance from the DeltaS method is presented.

Galactic-Field Metal-Rich RR~Lyrae Variables: Features of Kinematics and Abundances of Selected Chemical Elements

Abstract:We present an analysis of the relative abundance features of a number of chemical elements in the atmospheres of metal-rich ($\rm{[Fe/H]} > -1.0$) Galactic-field RR~Lyrae variable stars and the kinematic characteristics of these stars. We have previously shown that the relative abundances of some $\alpha$-elements: magnesium, silicon, calcium, and to a greater extent of titanium, as well as yttrium and scandium in such stars are lower than in most of other types of stars, bearing similar metallicity. It is found here that some of these metal-rich RR~Lyrae stars also have very low relative abundances of sodium, aluminum and nickel. The orbital parameters of all the metal-rich RR~Lyrae variables studied in this paper are typical of the Galactic thin or thick disk objects, however, unusual chemical composition let us to suggests a possible extragalactic origin for some of them.

Abstract:We describe and summarize the findings from our CCD time-series photometry of globular clusters (GCs) program and the use of difference image analysis (DIA) in the extraction of very precise light curves even in the crowded central regions down to $V\sim 19$ mag. We have discovered approximately 250 variable stars in a sample of 23 selected GCs and have, therefore, updated the census of variables in each system and in some cases we have actually completed it down to a certain magnitude. The absolute magnitude and [Fe/H] for each individual RR Lyrae is obtained via the Fourier decomposition of the light curve. An average of these parameters leads to the distance and metallicity of the host GCs. We have also calibrated the P-L relation for SX Phe stars which enables an independent calculation of the cluster distance. We present the mean [Fe/H], $M_V$ and distance for a group of selected GCs based exclusively on the RR Lyrae light curve Fourier decomposition technique and set on a rather unprecedented homogeneous scale. We also discuss the luminosity dependence of the horizontal branch (HB) via the $M_V$-[Fe/H] relation. We find that this relation should be considered separately for the RRab and RRc stars.

The Absolute Magnitude of RRc Variables From Statistical Parallax

Abstract:We present the first definitive measurement of the absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae c-type variable stars (RRc) determined purely from statistical parallax. We use a sample of 247 RRc selected from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) for which high-quality light curves, photometry and proper motions are available. We obtain high-resolution echelle spectra for these objects to determine radial velocities and abundances as part of the Carnegie RR Lyrae Survey (CARRS). We find that M_(V,RRc) = 0.52 +/- 0.11 at a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.59. This is to be compared with previous estimates for RRab stars (M_(V,RRab) = 0.75 +/- 0.13 and the only direct measurement of an RRc absolute magnitude (RZ Cephei, M_(V, RRc) = 0.27 +/- 0.17). We find the bulk velocity of the halo to be (W_pi, W_theta, W_z) = (10.9,34.9,7.2) km/s in the radial, rotational and vertical directions with dispersions (sigma_(W_pi), sigma_(W_theta), sigma_(W_z)) = (154.7, 103.6, 93.8) km/s. For the disk, we find (W_pi, W_theta, W_z) = (8.5, 213.2, -22.1) km/s with dispersions (sigma_(W_pi), sigma_(W_theta), sigma_(W_z)) = (63.5, 49.6, 51.3) km/s. Finally, we suggest that UCAC2 proper motion errors may be overestimated by about 25%

The Galactic Bulge exploration III.: Calcium Triplet Metallicities for RR Lyrae Stars

Abstract:RR Lyrae stars are excellent tracers of stellar populations for old, metal-poor components in the Milky Way Galaxy and the Local Group. Their luminosities have a metallicity-dependence, but determining spectroscopic [Fe/H] metallicities for RR Lyrae stars, especially at distances outside the solar neighbourhood, is challenging. Using 40 RRLs with metallicities derived from both Fe(II) and Fe(I) abundances, we verify the calibration between the [Fe/H] of RR Lyrae stars from the Calcium triplet. Our calibration is applied to all RR Lyrae stars with Gaia RVS spectra in Gaia DR3 as well as to 80 stars in the inner Galaxy from the BRAVA-RR survey. The co-added Gaia RVS RR Lyrae spectra provide RR Lyrae metallicities with an uncertainty of 0.25~dex, which is a factor of two improvement over the Gaia photometric RR Lyrae metallicities. Within our Galactic bulge RR Lyrae star sample, we find a dominant fraction with low energies without a prominent rotating component. Due to the large fraction of such stars, we interpret these stars as belonging to the $in-situ$ metal-poor Galactic bulge component, although we can not rule out that a fraction of these belong to an ancient accretion event such as Kraken/Heracles.

Metallicity of RR Lyrae stars from the Gaia Data Release 3 catalogue computed with Machine Learning algorithms

Abstract:We present new $P -\phi_{31}-{\rm [Fe/H]}$ and $P -\phi_{31}- A_2 - {\rm [Fe/H]}$ relations for fundamental-mode (RRab) and first-overtone mode (RRc) RR Lyrae stars (RRLs), respectively. The relations were calibrated based on pulsation periods and Fourier parameters of the RRL light curves in the Gaia $G$-band published in the Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), and accurate spectroscopically measured metallicities available in the literature. We apply the feature selection algorithm to identify the most relevant parameters for the determination of metallicity. To fit the relations, we used the Bayesian approach, which allowed us to carefully take into account uncertainties in various parameters and the intrinsic scatter of the relations. The root mean squared errors of the predicted metallicity values in the training samples are 0.28 dex and 0.21 dex for RRab and RRc stars, respectively, comparable with the typical uncertainty of low/intermediate resolution spectroscopic metallicity measurements. We applied the new relations to measure individual metallicities and distances to $\sim$ 134,000 RRLs from the Gaia DR3 catalogue, as well as mean metallicities and distances to 38 Milky Way globular clusters. We also estimate the mean metallicity and distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC): ${\rm [Fe/H]_{LMC} = -1.63\pm0.36}$ and $\mu_{\rm LMC}=18.55\pm0.18$~mag, ${\rm [Fe/H]_{SMC}=-1.86\pm0.36}$~dex and $\mu_{\rm SMC}=19.01\pm 0.17$~mag, respectively, in excellent agreement with previous measurements.

CCD \emph{VI} time-series of the extremely metal poor globular cluster M92: revisiting its variable star population

Abstract:We present an analysis of \emph{VI} CCD time-series photometry of the Oo II type globular cluster M92. The variable star population of the cluster is studied with the aim of revising their classifications, identifications, frequency spectra and to select indicators of the parental cluster metallicity and distance. The Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves lead to the estimation of mean [Fe/H]$_{\rm spec}=-2.20\pm 0.18$, and distance of $8.3\pm0.2$ kpc. Four new variables are reported; one RRd (V40), a multimode SX Phe (V41), a SR (V42) and one RRc (F1) that is most likely not a cluster member. The AC nature of V7 is confirmed. The double mode nature of the RRc star V11 is not confirmed and its amplitude modulations are most likely due to the Blazhko effect. Two modes are found in the known RRc variable V13. It is argued that the variable V30, previously classified as RRab is, in fact, an BL Her-type star not belonging to the cluster. Making use of the $Gaia$-DR2 proper motions, we identified 5012 stars in the field of the cluster, that are very likely cluster members, and for which we possess photometry, enabling the production of a refined Colour-Magnitude Diagram. This also allowed us to identify a few variable stars that do not belong to the cluster. The RR Lyrae pulsation modes on the HB are cleanly separated by the first overtone red edge, a common feature in all Oo II type clusters.

Abstract:We present new period-φ 31 -[Fe/H] relations for first-overtone RRL stars (RRc), calibrated over a broad range of metallicities (−2.5 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ 0.0) using the largest currently available set of Galactic halo field RRL with homogeneous spectroscopic metallicities. Our relations are defined in the optical (ASAS-SN V band) and, inaugurally, in the infrared (WISE W1 and W2 bands). Our V-band relation can reproduce individual RRc spectroscopic metallicities with a dispersion of 0.30 dex over the entire metallicity range of our calibrator sample (an rms smaller than what we found for other relations in literature including nonlinear terms). Our infrared relation has a similar dispersion in the low- and intermediate-metallicity range ([Fe/H] ≲ −0.5), but tends to underestimate the [Fe/H] abundance around solar metallicity. We tested our relations by measuring both the metallicity of the Sculptor dSph and a sample of Galactic globular clusters, rich in both RRc and RRab stars. The average metallicity we obtain for the combined RRL sample in each cluster is within ±0.08 dex of their spectroscopic metallicities. The infrared and optical relations presented in this work will enable deriving reliable photometric RRL metallicities in conditions where spectroscopic measurements are not feasible; e.g., in distant galaxies or reddened regions (observed with upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes and the James Webb Space Telescope), or in the large sample of new RRL that will be discovered in large-area time-domain photometric surveys (such as the LSST and the Roman space telescope).

Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relations for Classical Pulsators at Near-infrared Wavelengths

Abstract:Classical pulsating stars such as Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables exhibit well-defined Period-Luminosity relations at near-infrared wavelengths. Despite their extensive use as stellar standard candles, the effects of metallicity on Period-Luminosity relations for these pulsating variables, and in turn, on possible biases in distance determinations, are not well understood. We present ongoing efforts in determining accurate and precise metallicity coefficients of Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relations for classical pulsators at near-infrared wavelengths. For Cepheids, it is crucial to obtain a homogeneous sample of photometric light curves and high-resolution spectra for a wide range of metallicities to empirically determine metallicity coefficient and reconcile differences with the predictions of the theoretical models. For RR Lyrae variables, using their host globular clusters covering a wide range of metallicities, we determined the most precise metallicity coefficient at near-infrared wavelengths, which is in excellent agreement with the predictions of the horizontal branch evolution and stellar pulsation models.

Abstract:We use UCAC4 proper motions and WISE W1-band apparent magnitudes intensity-mean for almost 400 field RR Lyrae variables to determine the parameters of the velocity distribution of Galactic RR Lyrae population and constrain the zero points of the metallicity-<MV> relation and those of the period-metallicity-<MKs>-band and period-metallicity-<MW1>-band luminosity relations via statistical parallax. We find the mean velocities of the halo- and thick-disc RR Lyrae populations in the solar neighbourhood to be (U0(Halo), V0(Halo), W0(Halo)) = (-7 +/- 9, -214 +/- 10, -10 +/- 6) km/s and (U0(Disc), V0(Disc), W0(Disc)) =(-13 +/- 7, -37 +/- 6, -17 +/- 4) km/s, respectively, and the corresponding components of the velocity-dispersion ellipsoids, (sigma VR(Halo), sigma Vphi(Halo), sigma Vtheta(Halo)) = (153 +/- 9, 101 +/- 6, 96 +/- 5) km/s and (sigma VR(Disc), sigma Vphi(Disc), sigma Vtheta(Disc)) = (46 +/- 7, 37 +/- 5, 27 +/- 4) km/s, respectively. The fraction of thick-disc stars is estimated at 0.22 +/- 0.03. The corrected IR period-metallicity-luminosity relations are <MKs> = -0.769 +0.088 [Fe/H]- 2.33 mathoprm log PF and <MW1> = -0.825 + 0.088 [Fe/H] -2.33 mathoprm log PF, and the optical metallicity-luminosity relation, [Fe/H]-<MV>, is <MV> = +1.094 + 0.232 [Fe/H], with a standard error of +/- 0.089, implying an LMC distance modulus of 18.32 +/- 0.09, a solar Galactocentric distance of 7.73 +/- 0.36 kpc, and the M31 and M33 distance moduli of DM(M31) = 24.24 +/- 0.09 (D = 705 +/- 30 kpc) and DM(M33) = 24.36 +/- 0.09 (D = 745 +/- 31 kpc), respectively. Extragalactic distances calibrated with our RR Lyrae star luminosity scale imply a Hubble constant of ~80 km/s/Mpc. Our results suggest marginal prograde rotation for the population of halo RR Lyraes in the Milky Way.

A new method for determining physical parameters of fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars from multicolour light curves

Abstract:We present a new method for determining physical parameters of RRab variables exclusively from multicolour light curves. Our method is an Inverse Photometric Baade-Wesselink analysis which, using a nonlinear least squares algorithm, searches for the effective temperature (T_eff) and pulsational velocity (V_p) curves and other physical parameters that best fit the observed light curves, utilising synthetic colours and bolometric corrections from static atmosphere models. The T_eff and V_p curves are initially derived from empirical relations then they are varied by the fitting algorithm. The method yields the variations and the absolute values of the radius, the effective temperature, the visual brightness, and the luminosity of individual objects. Distance and mass are also determined. The method is tested on 9 RRab stars subjected to Baade-Wesselink analyses earlier by several authors. The physical parameters derived by our method using only the light curve data of these stars are well within their possible ranges defined by direct Baade-Wesselink and other techniques. A new empirical relation between the I_C magnitude and the pulsational velocity is also presented, which allows to construct the V_p curve of an RRab star purely from photometric observations to an accuracy of about 3.5 km/s.

Photometric metallicity and distance estimates for $\sim$ 136,000 RR Lyrae stars from Gaia DR3

Abstract:We present a sample of 135,873 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) with precise photometric-metallicity and distance estimates from our newly calibrated $P-\phi_{31}-R_{21}-$[Fe/H]/$P-R_{21}-$[Fe/H] and $G$ band absolute magnitude-metallicity relations. The $P-\phi_{31}-R_{21}-$[Fe/H] and $P-R_{21}-$[Fe/H] relations for type RRab and type RRc stars are obtained from nearly 2700 Gaia-identified RRLs with precise $\phi_{31}$ and $R_{21}$ measurements from the light curves and metallicity estimates from spectroscopy. Using 236 nearby RRLs with accurate distances estimated from parallax measurements with Gaia EDR3, new $G$ band absolute magnitude-metallicity relations and near-infrared period-absolute magnitude-metallicity relations are constructed. External checks, using other high-resolution spectroscopic sample of field RRLs and RRL members of globular clusters (GCs), show that the typical uncertainties in our photometric-metallicity estimates are about 0.24 and 0.16 dex for type RRab/c stars, respectively, without significant systematic bias with respect to high-resolution spectroscopic metallicity measurements. The accuracies of these metallicity estimates are much improved, especially for RRab stars, when compared to those provided by the Gaia DR3 release. Validations of our distance estimates, again by using members of GCs, show that the typical distance errors are only 3-4%. The distance modulus $\mu_0=18.503\pm0.001(stat)\pm0.040(syst)$ mag for the LMC and $\mu_0=19.030\pm0.003(stat)\pm0.043(syst)$ mag for the SMC are estimated from our RRab sample, respectively, and are in excellent agreement with previous measurements. The mean metallicities of the LMC and SMC derived in this work are also consistent with the previous determinations. Using our sample, a steep metallicity gradient of $-0.024\pm0.001$ dex/kpc is found for the LMC, while a negligible metallicity gradient is obtained for the SMC.

Metallicity distribution functions of the old populations of the Magellanic Clouds from RR Lyrae stars

Abstract:We present the first metallicity distribution functions of the old field populations in the Magellanic Clouds. Our metallicities are based on the Fourier decomposition of Type ab RR Lyrae light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). On the metallicity scale of Zinn & West; we find a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.50 +/- 0.24 dex based on 16776 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) we obtain -1.70 +/- 0.27 dex based on 1831 RR Lyrae stars. These uncertainties represent the intrinsic spread in the population rather than the standard deviation of the mean. Our results are in good agreement with the few existing spectroscopic metallicity determinations for LMC RR Lyrae stars from the literature. For both the LMC and the SMC the metallicity spread exceeds 1 dex in [Fe/H]. The distribution of metallicities in both Clouds is very uniform, and no significant metallicity gradient is detectable. We also do not find any pronounced populations of extremely metal-poor RR Lyrae candidates with metallicities well below -2 dex, although we need to caution that the photometric method used may overestimate the metallicities of metal-deficient stars. Moreover, because of stellar evolutionary effects one does not expect to observe many RR Lyrae stars among very metal-poor horizontal branch stars. We suggest that the Magellanic Clouds experienced fairly rapid and efficient early enrichment involving pre-enriched gas as well as possibly gas infall, while metal loss through outflows does not seem to have played a significant role. Moreover we suggest that the differences in the metallicities of the old population of LMC and SMC make an origin from a single, common progenitor unlikely, unless the separation happened very early on.
