Abstract:Routing problems are often faced by companies who serve costumers through vehicles. Such problems have a challenging structure to optimize, despite the recent advances in combinatorial optimization. The goal of this project is to study and propose optimization algorithms to the vehicle routing problems (VRP). Focus will be on the problem variant in which the length of the route is restricted by a constant. A real problem will be tackled: optimization of postmen routes. Such problem was modeled as {multi-objective} in a roadmap with 25 vehicles and {30,000 deliveries} per day.

Abstract:Os carrinheiros são catadores de materiais recicláveis que utilizam veículos de tração humana. As rotas de coleta dos carrinheiros podem ser cansativas dependendo do trajeto. Sendo assim, este trabalho propõe um algoritmo de sugestão de rotas personalizáveis a partir de três políticas de cálculo de custos de arestas: Política de Menor Trabalho, Política de Menor Impedância e Política de Menor Distância. Utilizou-se as ferramentas osmnx e networkx na construção dos grafos, dados geográficos do Open Street Map e elevações do Topodata. As simulações realizadas no Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) demonstraram que o algoritmo proposto pode minimizar a potência aplicada no veículo, a distância e o tempo de percurso, de acordo com a política utilizada.
Study on tabu search algorithm for stochastic vehicle routing problem

Abstract:On the basis of describing the vehicle routing problem briefly,a new improved tabu search algorithm is presented.In this algorithm,routing problem is divided into several sub-problems according to vehicle-customer assigning structure,and an inner tabu search algorithm is applied for each sub-problem,at last the answer of the whole problem is find among the answers of all sub-problems.Two conclusions are drawn by computation results and theory:the algorithm extends the search scope,improving the optimisation effect;The algorithm is a collateral algorithm that can be run by several computer at the same time to decrease the whole optimisation time.

Abstract:Forest fires are a recurring problem in areas of natural forests and reforestation, causing the loss of large areas of vegetation, resulting in economic and environmental damage. The reduction of fire occurrences must be based on prevention, detection, and combat, with rapid detection being a decisive factor in firefighting. The objective of this study is to present an integrated approach using operational research and geographic information system (GIS) technology to optimize the spatial coverage of conventional observation towers in areas at risk of forest fires. The study area is the Vale Nature Reserve (VNR), located in the north part of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The locations of forest fire risk (FFR) that were used as input in the mathematical programming model were defined, and then visibility analyses were performed by varying the height of the fire towers under eight scenarios. The mathematical model efficiently positioned the fire towers, allowing for optimized planning based on resource limitations and efficiency sensitivity analyses by increasing the number of towers in the scenarios. The proposed methodology provides a simple and robust analysis tool for the decision maker by allowing numerous combinations to be evaluated in a short time.

Abstract:Although advanced traffic management systems can deal with the heterogeneous traffic flows approaching of intersections, their performances are compromised, when the traffic volume is not distributed uniformly. To evenly distribute the traffic flow, an advanced driver information system should be aware of the traffic control operations. However, such requirement can not ultimately be satisfied due to the gaps in state of the art in advanced traffic management systems. Therefore, this study proposes a distributed traffic control system, in which agents embedded in connected vehicles, traffic signals, urban elements and a traffic control center interact with each other to provide a greater traffic fluidity. Therefore, the agents depend strongly on a heterogeneous vehicular network. In this sense, this study also proposes a heterogeneous vehicular network whose communication protocol can satisfy the communication requirements of intelligent transportation systems service applications. According to the results obtained from simulations, the distributed traffic control system was able to maximize the flow of vehicles and the mean speed of the vehicles, and minimize the wait time, travel time, fuel consume and emissions (CO, CO$_2$, HC, NOx and PMx).

Abstract:Vehicle routing problems constitute a class of combinatorial optimization tasks that search for optimal routes (e.g., minimal cost routes) for one or more vehicles to attend a set of nodes (e.g., cities or customers). Finding the optimal solution to vehicle routing tasks is an NP-hard problem, meaning that the size of problems that can be solved by exhaustive search is limited. From a practical perspective, this class of problems has a wide and important set of applications, from the distribution of goods to the integrated chip design. Rooted on the use of collective intelligence, swarm-inspired algorithms, more specifically bee-inspired approaches, have been used with good performance to solve such problems. In this context, the present paper provides a broad review on the use of bee-inspired methods for solving vehicle routing problems, introduces a new approach to solve one of the main tasks in this area (the travelling salesman problem), and describes open problems in the field.

Abstract:This paper addresses the single crew scheduling and routing problem in the context of road network repair and restoration, which is critical in assisting complex postdisaster decisions in humanitarian logistics settings. We present three novel formulations for this problem, which are the first suitable for column generation and branch-and-price (BP) algorithms. Specifically, our first formulation is based on enumerating crew schedules and routes while explicitly defining the relief paths. The second formulation relies on enumerating the schedules, routes, and relief paths. Finally, the third formulation builds upon the second one by including additional constraints and variables related to relief path decisions. Considering each formulation, we propose BP algorithms that rely on several enhancements, including a new dynamic programming labeling algorithm to efficiently solve the subproblems. Extensive computational results based on 648 benchmark instances reveal that our BP algorithms significantly outperform existing exact approaches, solving 450 instances to optimality, and remarkably 118 instances for the first time. Our framework is also very effective in improving the lower bounds, upper bounds, and optimality gaps that have been reported in the literature. Abstract:BGP and OSPF are two protocols widely used for inter-and intra-domain routing.Their working states have deep influence on network performance.This paper designs and implements a general route monitoring and analysis system.The system collects routing information in real-time,and parses the information to automatically generate inter-and intra-domain topology.The system generates history topology graphs so that users can easily browse and compare them.It also analyzes the routing convergence and stability based on the statistics of the collected routing information.With the help of these convenient functions,network administrators can manage the real-time state of a routing system and take the corresponding operation.

Abstract:Interpretation and analysis of urban topology are particularly challenging tasks given the complex spatial pattern of the urban elements, and hence their automation is especially needed. In terms of the urban scene meaning, the starting point in this study is unstructured geospatial data, i.e. no prior knowledge of the geospatial entities is assumed. Translating these data into more meaningful homogeneous regions can be achieved by detecting geographic features within the initial random collection of geospatial objects, and then by grouping them according to their spatial arrangement. The techniques applied to achieve this are those of graph theory applied to urban topology analysis within GIS environment. This article focuses primarily on the implementation and algorithmic design of a methodology to define and make urban topology explicit. Conceptually, such procedure analyses and interprets geospatial object arrangements in terms of the extension of the standard notion of the topological relation of adjacency to that of containment: the so-called ‘containment-first search’. LiDAR data were used as an example scenario for development and test purposes.

Abstract:Smart grids (SGs) have as one of their basic proposals to incorporate intelligence into the electric grid through computing and communication technologies aiming at greater efficiency and effectiveness in their operation and control. Power loss, quality, and failures are inherent in the generation process, transmission, and distribution of electricity and, in the context of SGs, should be minimized to ensure greater resilience and system efficiency. Dynamic and efficient distribution network reconfiguration is an example of an SG functionality. The reconfiguration process consists of adjusting or changing the topology of the distribution network from the opening and closing of switches to minimize technical losses, optimize operating parameters, and restore power supply in contingency situations. The nature of the network reconfiguration problem is combinatorial, complex, and non-linear. Aiming to minimize convergence time in search of a solution in medium and large topologies, heuristic and optimization techniques are an alternative. This dissertation proposes a new genetic algorithm, GAEnhanced (Genetic Algorithm Enhanced), to solve network reconfiguration and make a comparative study of performance aspects of this algorithm in relation to other solutions and algorithmic strategies used. The main goal is to evaluate the algorithm implementation strategies for dynamic reconfiguration and on-the-fly distribution networks from a broader perspective, in addition to proposing a new solution with the GAEnhanced algorithm. A simulator (DNRSim) with basic functionalities for implementation and tests of network reconfiguration algorithms for the Smart Grid was developed within the scope of this dissertation. The comparative study of the performance of the GAEnhanced algorithm and other solutions with the DNRSim uses the IEEE models for system tests (14-bus, 30-bus, 57-bus, 118-bus, and 330-bus). The comparative study results illustrate the different ways to efficiently compute network reconfiguration solutions (scalability, time, and quality) and demonstrate the feasibility of using the GAEnhanced algorithm in the context of Smart Grids in a perspective of deploying more autonomic and intelligent solutions.
A Google Earth-Based Dynamic Route Guidance Algorithm and Its Implementations TEAM MEMBERS

Abstract:Since the traffic congestion become more and more serious in modern society due to the sharp increasing of private cars, how to improve the transportation efficiency and utilize the current road network more effectively has become a crucial issue. In this paper, a new dynamic route guidance algorithm was proposed in order to provide travelers humanized “optimal route” and to alleviate the loss caused by traffic jams. The study built a graph theory model for Beijing’s ring road transportation system, and proposed a evaluation function σ=Vf/[k×(t+m)] to describe the real time complex traffic flow, and realized the route searching by timed recomputation of classic Dijkstra algorithm. Meanwhile, due to the investigation of special features of ring roads, the study improved the priority of ring road nodes during the searching process. Comparing with Dijkstra algorithm, the time-complexity of this new algorithm decreases to 1/(16k) (k is the number of ring road in the road network), and extra mileage is less than 5%, which is more effective applying in large scale ring-road networks. The algorithm was realized by C++ language and connected to Google Earth’s map database with easy operation interface. (The operation of the algorithm program was manifested in the appended video)

Abstract:We revisit a concept that has been central in some early stages of computer science, that of structured programming: a set of rules that an algorithm must follow in order to acquire a structure that is desirable in many aspects. While much has been written about structured programming, an important issue has been left unanswered: given an arbitrary, compiled program, describe an algorithm to decide whether or not it is structured, that is, whether it conforms to the stated principles of structured programming. We refer to the classical concept of structured programming, as described by Dijkstra. By employing a graph model and graph-theoretic techniques, we formulate an efficient algorithm for answering this question. To do so, we first introduce the class of graphs which correspond to structured programs, which we call Dijkstra Graphs. Our problem then becomes the recognition of such graphs, for which we present a greedy $O(n)$-time algorithm. Furthermore, we describe an isomorphism algorithm for Dijkstra graphs, whose complexity is also linear in the number of vertices of the graph. Both the recognition and isomorphism algorithms have potential important applications, such as in code similarity analysis.

Abstract:In this paper we address several constrained transportation optimization problems (e.g. vehicle routing, shortest Hamiltonian path), for which we present novel algorithmic solutions and extensions, considering several optimization objectives, like minimizing costs and resource usage. All the considered problems are motivated by practical situations arising, for instance, in the mining and metallurgical industry or in data communication. We restrict our attention to transportation networks with path, tree or geometric structures, for which the developed polynomial-time algorithms are optimal or nearly optimal.

Abstract:In many Brazilian cities, the most common procedure for planning cycling networks is using aggregated population data in census tracts, which may not take into account the true origin and destination of trips. It may also not identify potential users of a particular mode of transport. This is particularly important considering that implementing cycling infrastructures should be based on the assumption that they are able to meet the users' needs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop and adopt an objective method to design and compare cycling networks based on data-mining of disaggregated origin-destination data, GIS resources, and multicriteria analysis techniques. The method follows three steps: 1) identifying potential users based on real user profiles, 2) designing proposed cycling networks and 3) a comparison between the networks proposed in this study and those developed by the municipality selected as a case study, considering real and potential users, as well as cost and benefit criteria. As a positive outcome, using disaggregated data allows for a reasonable estimate of the number of people served by the networks, a detailed analysis of their proximity to the infrastructure, as well as identifying potential users. Comparing cycling networks considering cost and benefit criteria shows that the chosen criteria were effective. It was also determined that the cycling network of the studied city poorly serves bicycle transport users, if compared to the proposed networks. These findings indicate that appropriate methods for planning cycling networks are still needed.

A novel GIS-based decision-making framework for the school bus routing problem

Abstract:The school bus routing problem (SBRP) is a central issue in transportation planning and optimization systems. SBRP seeks to plan an efficient schedule for a fleet of school buses where each bus picks up students from various bus stops and delivers them to their designated schools while satisfying various constraints such as the maximum capacity of a bus, and the time window of a school. Due to its inherent complexity, many heuristics have been proposed to solve this combinatorial problem in an effective way. In this paper, a novel geographic information systems (GIS)-based decision-making framework that combines GIS, clustering techniques, network cutting techniques, and a hybrid ant colony optimization metaheuristic with the iterated Lin–Kernighan local improvement heuristic is proposed for solving the SBRP as a split delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP). Experiments were conducted for evaluating the proposed framework by comparing the results for solving 11 routing problems using both the proposed decision-making framework and ArcGIS 9.2 Network Analyst which uses the greedy Dijkstra’s algorithm. The reported results of the proposed framework generally outperform that of the ArcGIS Network Analyst. In addition, the proposed decision-making framework was applied to solve a real life SBRP to demonstrate its application.

Abstract:The sustainable development of geo-strategic transport networks plays a key role to meet the current expansion of the demand for commerce and economic growth. In this paper, a new geo-strategic railway network for freight services is designed with the purpose of meeting the needs of current and future demands for freight transport in the state of Santa Catarina, South Brazil. The freight flows of bulk cargo, containers, and refrigerated and liquid cargo observed in 2005 and 2015 and expected for 2023 have been analyzed and assigned to a fully connected railway network. The number of trains to meet all the demands has been identified. The links that would have a minimum number of daily trains running on them have also been identified and analyzed. New assignments are proposed and visualized using GIS. Next, location and technical specifications of specialized intermodal terminals focused on the customers’ and operators’ needs are discussed. The study shows that technological specifications for terminal operations play an important role when dealing with multiple freight types and contribute to better use of the existing infrastructure.

Abstract:The study of the shortest path algorithm is the hinge of spatial network analysis in GIS. The traditional path algorithms are all for single object. There’re few studies about GIS-based multitask path optimization algorithm now. After introduction of the single-object Dijkstra algorithm, some practical projects were put forward to solve the conflict in multitask path optimization, for example: waiting or waiting combined with path reelect. Some instance on the platform of GIS shows that the algorithm is reasonable and feasible.

Abstract:Based on GIS as the main carrier, our real time computer simulation system of urban logistics distribution vehicle routing optimization precisely measures and marks the information of distribution site, providing true and available information for routing optimization, performing low cost and highly efficient operation on vehicle scheduling by the distribution center through optimization algorithm. The system can satisfy the demand of urban logistics distribution routing optimization under the multi- constraints condition of variable distribution cites and complex urban roads by simulating numerous distribution cites up to scores of thousands according to different plans and different regions and counting the information of vehicle routing and loading by different plans for contrast analysis so as to adjust and optimize the distribution routing, regions, period and vehicles in order to accomplish the equilibrium distribution and management of many relevant indexes such as vehicle load capacity, distribution work capacity and distribution time.

Abstract:This paper describes a new methodology adopted for urban traffic stream optimization. By using Petri net analysis as fitness function of a Genetic Algorithm, an entire urban road network is controlled in real time. With the advent of new technologies that have been published, particularly focusing on communications among vehicles and roads infrastructures, we consider that vehicles can provide their positions and their destinations to a central server so that it is able to calculate the best route for one of them. Our tests concentrate on comparisons between the proposed approach and other algorithms that are currently used for the same purpose, being possible to conclude that our algorithm optimizes traffic in a relevant manner.
