Abstract:A numerical-relativity calculation yields in general a solution of the Einstein equations including also a radiative part, which is in practice computed in a region of finite extent. Since gravitational radiation is properly defined only at null infinity and in an appropriate coordinate system, the accurate estimation of the emitted gravitational waves represents an old and non-trivial problem in numerical relativity. A number of methods have been developed over the years to "extract" the radiative part of the solution from a numerical simulation and these include: quadrupole formulas, gauge-invariant metric perturbations, Weyl scalars, and characteristic extraction. We review and discuss each method, in terms of both its theoretical background as well as its implementation. Finally, we provide a brief comparison of the various methods in terms of their inherent advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:The gravitational perturbations of a rotating Kerr black hole are notoriously complicated, even at the linear level. In 1973, Teukolsky showed that their physical degrees of freedom are encoded in two gauge-invariant Weyl curvature scalars that obey a separable wave equation. Determining these scalars is sufficient for many purposes, such as the computation of energy fluxes. However, some applications -- such as second-order perturbation theory -- require the reconstruction of metric perturbations. In principle, this problem was solved long ago, but in practice, the solution has never been worked out explicitly. Here, we do so by writing down the metric perturbation (in either ingoing or outgoing radiation gauge) that corresponds to a given mode of either Weyl scalar. Our formulas make no reference to the Hertz potential (an intermediate quantity that plays no fundamental role) and involve only the radial and angular Kerr modes, but not their derivatives, which can be altogether eliminated using the Teukolsky--Starobinsky identities. We expect these analytic results to prove useful in numerical studies and for extending black hole perturbation theory beyond the linear regime.

Radiation and Asymptotics for Spacetimes with Non-Isotropic Mass

Abstract:We derive new results on radiation, angular momentum at future null infinity and peeling for a general class of spacetimes. For asymptotically-flat solutions of the Einstein vacuum equations with a term homogeneous of degree $-1$ in the initial data metric, that is it may include a non-isotropic mass term, we prove new detailed behavior of the radiation field and curvature components at future null infinity. In particular, the limit along the null hypersurface $C_u$ as $t \to \infty$ of the curvature component $\rho = \frac{1}{4} R_{3434}$ multiplied with $r^3$ tends to a function $P(u, \theta, \phi)$ on $\mathbb{R} \times S^2$. When taking the limit $u \to + \infty$ (which corresponds to the limit at spacelike infinity), this function tends to a function $P^+ (\theta, \phi)$ on $S^2$. We prove that the latter limit does not have any $l=1$ modes. However, it has all the other modes, $l=0, l \geq 2$. Important derivatives of crucial curvature components do not decay in $u$, which is a special feature of these more general spacetimes. We show that peeling of the Weyl curvature components at future null infinity stops at the order $r^{-3}$, that is $r^{-4} |u|^{+1}$, for large data, and at order $r^{- \frac{7}{2}}$ for small data. Despite this fact, we prove that angular momentum at future null infinity is well defined for these spacetimes, due to the good behavior of the $l=1$ modes involved.

Abstract:We examine current numerical relativity computations of gravitational waves, which typically determine the asymptotic waves at infinity by extrapolation from finite (small) radii. Using simulations of a black hole binary with accurate wave extraction at $r=1000M$, we show that extrapolations from the near-zone are self-consistent in approximating measurements at this radius, although with a somewhat reduced accuracy. We verify that $\psi_4$ is the dominant asymptotic contribution to the gravitational energy (as required by the peeling theorem) but point out that gauge effects may complicate the interpretation of the other Weyl components.

Abstract:Errors due to imperfect boundary conditions in numerical relativity simulations of binary black holes can produce unphysical reflections of gravitational waves which compromise the accuracy of waveform predictions, especially for subdominant modes. A system of higher order absorbing boundary conditions which greatly reduces this problem was introduced in earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="gr-qc/0608051" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0608051">arXiv:gr-qc/0608051</a>]. In this paper, we devise two new implementations of this boundary condition system in the Spectral Einstein Code (SpEC), and test them in both linear multipolar gravitational wave and inspiralling mass ratio 7:1 binary black hole simulations. One of our implementations in particular is shown to be extremely robust and to produce accuracy superior to the standard freezing-Psi_0 boundary condition usually used by SpEC.

Abstract:We study scalar-tensor gravitational theories using on-shell amplitude methods. We focus on theories with gravity coupled to a massless scalar via the Gauss-Bonnet and Chern-Simons terms. In this framework, we calculate the waveforms for classical scalar radiation emitted in scattering of macroscopic objects, including spin effects. To this end, we use the Kosower-Maybee-O'Connell formalism, with the 5-particle amplitude for scalar emission in matter scattering calculated at tree level using the unitarity-factorization bootstrap techniques. We also discuss in detail the dependence of that amplitude on the contact terms of the intermediate 4-particle scalar-graviton-matter amplitude. Finally, we discuss the conditions for resolvability of classical scalar radiation.

Abstract:The production of numerical relativity waveforms that describe quasicircular binary black hole mergers requires high-quality initial data, and an algorithm to iteratively reduce residual eccentricity. To date, these tools remain closed source, or in commercial software that prevents their use in high performance computing platforms. To address these limitations, and to ensure that the broader numerical relativity community has access to these tools, herein we provide all the required elements to produce high-quality numerical relativity simulations in supercomputer platforms, namely: open source parameter files to numerical simulate spinning black hole binaries with asymmetric mass-ratios; open source $\texttt{Python}$ tools to produce high-quality initial data for numerical relativity simulations of spinning black hole binaries on quasi-circular orbits; open source $\texttt{Python}$ tools for eccentricity reduction, both as stand-alone software and deployed in the $\texttt{Einstein Toolkit}$'s software infrastructure. This open source toolkit fills in a critical void in the literature at a time when numerical relativity has an ever increasing role in the study and interpretation of gravitational wave sources. As part of our community building efforts, and to streamline and accelerate the use of these resources, we provide tutorials that describe, step by step, how to obtain and use these open source numerical relativity tools.

Abstract:Gravitational wave observations can test the validity of General Relativity (GR) in the strong field regime. Certain classes of scalar-tensor theories indeed predict that compact objects can exhibit significant deviations from their GR counterparts. Here we explore the quasinormal modes of axial perturbations in spherically symmetric black holes in three such classes: (i) dilatonic black holes with an additional scalar-Ricci coupling (EdRGB), (ii) spontaneously scalarized black holes (EsRGB) with a quadratic coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and the Ricci scalar, (iii) spontaneously scalarized black holes with a quadratic and a quartic coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant.

Abstract:We investigate how the accuracy and stability of numerical relativity simulations of 1D colliding plane waves depends on choices of equation formulations, gauge conditions, boundary conditions, and numerical methods, all in the context of a first-order 3+1 approach to the Einstein equations, with basic variables some combination of first derivatives of the spatial metric and components of the extrinsic curvature tensor. Hyperbolic schemes, specifically variations on schemes proposed by Bona and Masso and Anderson and York, are compared with variations of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formulation. Modifications of the three basic schemes include raising one index in the metric derivative and extrinsic curvature variables and adding a multiple of the energy constraint to the extrinsic curvature evolution equations. Redundant variables in the Bona-Masso formulation may be reset frequently or allowed to evolve freely. Gauge conditions which simplify the dynamical structure of the system are imposed during each time step, but the lapse and shift are reset periodically to control the evolution of the spacetime slicing and the longitudinal part of the metric. We show that physically correct boundary conditions, satisfying the energy and momentum constraint equations, generically require the presence of some ingoing eigenmodes of the characteristic matrix. Numerical methods are developed for the hyperbolic systems based on decomposing flux differences into linear combinations of eigenvectors of the characteristic matrix. These methods are shown to be second-order accurate, and in practice second-order convergent, for smooth solutions, even when the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the characteristic matrix are spatially varying.

Gravitational Bremsstrahlung in Black-Hole Scattering at $\mathcal{O}(G^3)$: Linear-in-Spin Effects

Abstract:We compute the far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in the scattering of two spinning massive objects. The results include linear-in-spin ($S$) couplings and first-order gravitational corrections ($G^3$), and are valid for encounters in the weak-field regime. Employing a field-theory framework based on the scattering of massive scalar and vector particles coupled to Einstein-Hilbert gravity, we derive results for leading and the next-to-leading spectral waveforms. We provide analytic expressions for the required scattering data, which include trees, one-loop amplitudes and their cuts. The expressions are extracted from numerical amplitude evaluations with the Caravel program, using analytic reconstruction techniques applied in the classical limit. We confirm a recent prediction for infrared physics of the classical observable, and observe the surprising appearance of a ultraviolet singularity, which drops out in the far-field waveform.

Decoupled Gravitational Wave Equations in Spherical Symmetry from Curvature Wave Equations

Abstract:Black hole perturbation theory on spherically symmetric backgrounds has been instrumental in establishing various aspects about the gravitational dynamics close to black holes, and continues to be an interesting avenue to confront current challenges in gravitational physics. In this paper, we present an approach to perturbation theory in spherical symmetry that addresses simultaneously some conceivably inconvenient aspects of the traditional methods. In particular, focusing on Schwarzschild's background we are able to derive a decoupled wave equation, for a single complex variable, by simply computing one component of the curvature wave equation satisfied by a complex self-dual version of the Riemann tensor. The real and imaginary parts of the variable consist only of even and odd pieces of the metric fluctuation, respectively, and both satisfy the Regge-Wheeler equation. Besides providing a systematic derivation of decoupled equations, an immediate corollary of our results is the isospectrality between even and odd sectors. We conclude by discussing potential extensions of our formalism to include matter and higher orders in perturbation theory.

Toward exponentially-convergent simulations of extreme-mass-ratio inspirals: A time-domain solver for the scalar Teukolsky equation with singular source terms

Abstract:Gravitational wave signals from extreme mass ratio inspirals are a key target for space-based gravitational wave detectors. These systems are typically modeled as a distributionally-forced Teukolsky equation, where the smaller black hole is treated as a Dirac delta distribution. Time-domain solvers often use regularization approaches that approximate the Dirac distribution that often introduce small length scales and are a source of systematic error, especially near the smaller black hole. We describe a multi-domain discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the distributionally-forced Teukolsky equation that describes scalar fields evolving on a Kerr spacetime. To handle the Dirac delta, we expand the solution in spherical harmonics and recast the sourced Teukolsky equation as a first-order, one-dimensional symmetric hyperbolic system. This allows us to derive the method's numerical flux to correctly account for the Dirac delta. As a result, our method achieves global spectral accuracy even at the source's location. To connect the near field to future null infinity, we use the hyperboloidal layer method, allowing us to supply outer boundary conditions and providing direct access to the far-field waveform. We document several numerical experiments where we test our method, including convergence tests against exact solutions, energy luminosities for circular orbits, the scheme's superconvergence properties at future null infinity, and the late-time tail behavior of the scalar field. We also compare two systems that arise from different choices of the first-order reduction variables, finding that certain choices are numerically problematic in practice. The methods developed here may be beneficial when computing gravitational self-force effects, where the regularization procedure has been developed for the spherical harmonic modes and high accuracy is needed at the Dirac delta's location.

Agnostic black hole spectroscopy: Quasinormal mode content of numerical relativity waveforms and limits of validity of linear perturbation theory

Abstract:Black hole spectroscopy is the program to measure the complex gravitational-wave frequencies of merger remnants, and to quantify their agreement with the characteristic frequencies of black holes computed at linear order in black hole perturbation theory. In a "weaker" (non-agnostic) version of this test, one assumes that the frequencies depend on the mass and spin of the final Kerr black hole as predicted in perturbation theory. Linear perturbation theory is expected to be a good approximation only at late times, when the remnant is close enough to a stationary Kerr black hole. However, it has been claimed that a superposition of overtones with frequencies fixed at their asymptotic values in linear perturbation theory can reproduce the waveform strain even at the peak. Is this overfitting, or are the overtones physically present in the signal? To answer this question, we fit toy models of increasing complexity, waveforms produced within linear perturbation theory, and full numerical relativity waveforms using both agnostic and non-agnostic ringdown models. We find that higher overtones are unphysical: their role is mainly to "fit away" features such as initial data effects, power-law tails, and (when present) nonlinearities. We then identify physical quasinormal modes by fitting numerical waveforms in the original, agnostic spirit of the no-hair test. We find that a physically meaningful ringdown model requires the inclusion of higher multipoles, quasinormal mode frequencies induced by spherical-spheroidal mode mixing, and nonlinear quasinormal modes. Even in this "infinite signal-to-noise ratio" version of the original spectroscopy test, there is convincing evidence for the first overtone of the dominant multipole only well after the peak of the radiation.

Non-linear scattering of plane gravitational and electromagnetic waves

Abstract:Fully non-linear, plane-symmetric exact solutions of the Einstein equations describing the scattering of gravitational and electromagnetic waves have existed for many years. For these closed-form solutions to be found, idealized wave profiles such as the Dirac delta and Heaviside theta functions must be assumed. Although pathological in that future curvature singularities generically occur, these exact solutions give useful insights into the non-linear features of the scattering process. Only a limited number of exact solutions exist and this leaves many other physically-motivated scattering situations without a non-linear description. The aim of this paper is to shed light on these unexplored cases. This is achieved through numerical solutions of the Friedrich-Nagy initial boundary value problem for the Einstein equations coupled to the source-free Maxwell equations in plane symmetry. Interesting non-linear scattering effects are presented for a variety of electromagnetic and gravitational wave profiles not currently described by an exact solution. Implications for electromagnetic wave observations are investigated through analyzing the time-delay and frequency shift imparted on the electromagnetic wave through the non-linear scattering with a gravitational wave of a given strain. Simple arguments supported by the numerical solutions suggest dramatic effects on the radiation may be observable.

Analytic Waveforms for Eccentric Gravitational Wave Bursts

Abstract:We here present the first analytic effective fly-by (EFB) waveforms designed to accurately capture the burst of gravitational radiation from the closest approach of highly eccentric compact binaries. The waveforms are constructed by performing a re-summation procedure on the well-known Fourier series representation of the two-body problem at leading post-Newtonian order. This procedure results in two models: one in the time-domain, and one in the Fourier domain, which makes use of the stationary phase approximation. We discuss the computational efficiency of these models, and find that the time-domain model is roughly twice as fast as a numerical quadrupole waveform. We compare the time-domain model to both numerical, leading post-Newtonian order, quadrupole waveforms and numerical relativity fly-by waveforms using the match statistic. While the match is typically $>0.97$ when compared to the quadrupole waveforms, it is much lower when comparing to the numerical relativity fly-by waveforms, due to neglecting relativistic effects within the model. We further show how to use these individual waveforms to detect a repeated burst source.

Analysis of GWTC-3 with fully precessing numerical relativity surrogate models

Abstract:The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) contains 90 binary coalescence candidates detected by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration (LVK). We provide a re-analysis of binary black hole (BBH) events using a recently developed numerical relativity (NR) waveform surrogate model, NRSur7dq4, that includes all $\ell \leq 4$ spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes as well as the complete physical effects of precession. Properties of the remnant black holes' (BH's) mass, spin vector, and kick vector are found using an associated remnant surrogate model NRSur7dq4Remnant. Both NRSur7dq4 and NRSur7dq4Remnant models have errors comparable to numerical relativity simulations and allow for high-accuracy parameter estimates. We restrict our analysis to 47 BBH events that fall within the regime of validity of NRSur7dq4 (mass ratios greater than 1/6 and total masses greater than $60 M_{\odot}$). While for most of these events our results match the LVK analyses that were obtained using the semi-analytical models such as IMRPhenomXPHM and SEOBNRv4PHM, we find that for more than 20\% of events the NRSur7dq4 model recovers noticeably different measurements of black hole properties like the masses and spins, as well as extrinsic properties like the binary inclination and distance. For instance, GW150914_095045 exhibits noticeable differences in spin precession and spin magnitude measurements. Other notable findings include one event (GW191109_010717) that constrains the effective spin $\chi_{eff}$ to be negative at a 99.3\% credible level and two events (GW191109_010717 and GW200129_065458) with well-constrained kick velocities. Furthermore, compared to the models used in the LVK analyses, NRSur7dq4 recovers a larger signal-to-noise ratio and/or Bayes factors for several events.

The Case Against Smooth Null Infinity I: Heuristics and Counter-Examples

Abstract:This paper initiates a series of works dedicated to the rigorous study of the precise structure of gravitational radiation near infinity. We begin with a brief review of an argument due to Christodoulou [1] stating that Penrose's proposal of smooth conformal compactification of spacetime (or smooth null infinity) fails to accurately capture the structure of gravitational radiation emitted by $N$ infalling masses coming from past timelike infinity $i^-$. Modelling gravitational radiation by scalar radiation, we then take a first step towards a rigorous, fully general relativistic understanding of the non-smoothness of null infinity by constructing solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-Scalar field equations. Our constructions are motivated by Christodoulou's argument: They arise dynamically from polynomially decaying boundary data, $r\phi\sim t^{-1}$ as $t\to-\infty$, on a timelike hypersurface (to be thought of as the surface of a star) and the no incoming radiation condition, $r\partial_v\phi=0$, on past null infinity $\mathcal{I}^-$. We show that if the initial Hawking mass at $i^-$ is non-zero, then, in accordance with the non-smoothness of $\mathcal I^+$, $\partial_v(r\phi)$ satisfies the following asymptotic expansion near $\mathcal{I}^+$ for some constant $C\neq 0$: $\partial_v(r\phi)=Cr^{-3}\log r+\mathcal O(r^{-3})$. We also show that the same logarithmic terms appear in the linear theory, i.e. when considering the spherically symmetric linear wave equation on a fixed Schwarzschild background. As a corollary, we can apply our results to the scattering problem on Schwarzschild: Putting smooth, compactly supported scattering data for the wave equation on $\mathcal I^-$ and on $\mathcal H^-$, we find that the asymptotic expansion of $\partial_v(r\phi)$ near $\mathcal I^+$ generically contains logarithmic terms at second order, i.e. at order $r^{-4}\log r$.

Abstract:One of the most promising avenues to perform numerical evolutions in theories beyond General Relativity is the fixing-the-equations approach, a proposal in which new ``driver'' equations are added to the evolution equations in a way that allows for stable numerical evolutions. In this direction, we extend the numerical relativity code SpECTRE to evolve a ``fixed'' version of scalar Gauss-Bonnet theory in the decoupling limit, a phenomenologically interesting theory that allows for hairy black hole solutions in vacuum. We focus on isolated black hole systems both with and without linear and angular momentum, and propose a new driver equation to improve the recovery of such stationary solutions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the latter by numerically evolving black holes that undergo spontaneous scalarization using different driver equations. Finally, we evaluate the accuracy of the obtained solutions by comparing with the original unaltered theory.

Abstract:We report the results of our systematic studies of gravitational wave in general relativity, including relic gravitational wave (RGW) and gravitational radiation of binary. First we introduce the gravitational wave field equation and physical concepts involved, and discuss the nonlinear field equation containing second order terms of perturbations, the energy-momentum tensor of gravitational wave, its short-wavelength average, the definition of pressure, and removal of high-frequency divergences, etc. We present the exact solution of RGW, which covers the whole cosmic expansion history, from inflation to the present accelerating stages. We give the power spectrum, the spectral energy density and pressure, which are valid at any time and wavenumber, discuss the issue of the primordial spectrum defined during inflation, and give a brief review of current detections at various wave-bands, focus mainly on laser interferometers, give the signal-noise ratios and constraints upon RGW. We also present the analytical spectrum of magnetic polarization induced by RGW. Finally, we present the results of our study of OJ287 as a binary black holes, and give the the orbit, the energy flux, and waveform, and also discuss the shifting of the center-of-mass.

Abstract:In this work we explore a numerical technique, based on the spherical harmonic decomposition and the discretization of the radial coordinate through Čebyšëv polynomial interpolation, for the computation of quasi-bound states of linear massive scalar and vector perturbations in spinning black hole spacetimes in General Relativity. The aim is studying black hole superradiant instabilities, an energy-extraction mechanism triggered by the presence of massive bosonic fields near black holes, which finds wide applications in constraining scenarios beyond Standard Model and General Relativity. This method does not rely on any separation ansätze, thus it can have wide applications. Consequently we extend the technique so that it can be applied also to the computation of massive tensor quasi-bound states in spinning black holes in General Relativity, whose separability ansatz is currently unknown. We also apply it to spinning black holes in scalar-tensor theory non-linearly interacting with plasma, wherein the massless scalar perturbations acquires an effective mass, finding a novel way for constraining scalar-tensor theories.
