Abstract:We consider nondecreasing entropy solutions to 1-d scalar conservation laws and show that the spatial derivatives of such solutions satisfy a contraction property with respect to the Wasserstein distance of any order. This result extends the L^1-contraction property shown by Kruzkov.

Abstract:We have made current-voltage (IV) measurements of artificially layered high-$T_c$ thin-film bridges. Scanning SQUID microscopy of these films provides values for the Pearl lengths $\Lambda$ that exceed the bridge width, and shows that the current distributions are uniform across the bridges. At high temperatures and high currents the voltages follow the power law $V \propto I^n$, with $n=\Phi_0^2/8\pi^2\Lambda k_B T+1$, and at high temperatures and low-currents the resistance is exponential in temperature, in good agreement with the predictions for thermally activated vortex motion. At low temperatures, the IV's are better fit by $\ln V$ linear in $I^{-2}$. This is expected if the low temperature dissipation is dominated by quantum tunneling of Pearl vortices.

Abstract:We describe the equipment, observational method and reduction procedure of an absolutely calibrated radio continuum survey of the South Celestial Hemisphere at a frequency of 1420 MHz. These observations cover the area 0h < R.A. < 24h for declinations less than -10 degree. The sensitivity is about 50 mK T_B (full beam brightness) and the angular resolution (HPBW) is 35.4', which matches the existing northern sky survey at the same frequency.

Abstract:We present the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey, and its first full data release (DR1). GALFA-HI is a high resolution (~ 4'), large area (13000 deg^2), high spectral resolution (0.18 km/s), wide band (-700 < v_LSR < +700 km/s) survey of the Galactic interstellar medium in the 21-cm line hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen conducted at Arecibo Observatory. Typical noise levels are 80 mK RMS in an integrated 1 km/s channel. GALFA-HI is a dramatic step forward in high-resolution, large-area Galactic HI surveys, and we compare GALFA-HI to past, present, and future Galactic HI surveys. We describe in detail new techniques we have developed to reduce these data in the presence of fixed pattern noise, gain variation, and inconsistent beam shapes, and we show how we have largely mitigated these effects. We present our first full data release, covering 7520 square degrees of sky and representing 3046 hours of integration time, and discuss the details of these data.

A New 1.4GHz Radio Continuum Map of the Sky South of Declination +25 deg

Abstract:Archival data from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) and the HI Zone of Avoidance (HIZOA) survey have been carefully reprocessed into a new 1.4GHz continuum map of the sky south of declination +25 deg. The wide sky coverage, high sensitivity of 40mK (limited by confusion), resolution of 14'.4 (compared to 51' for the Haslam et al. 408MHz and 35' for the Reich et al. 1.4GHz surveys), and low level of artefacts makes this map ideal for numerous studies, including: merging into interferometer maps to complete large-scale structures; decomposition of thermal and non-thermal emission components from Galactic and extragalactic sources; and comparison of emission regions with other frequencies. The new map is available for download.

ALFALFA: HI Cosmology in the Local Universe

Abstract:For the last 25 years, the 21 cm line has been used productively to investigate the large-scale structure of the Universe, its peculiar velocity field and the measurement of cosmic parameters. In February 2005 a blind HI survey that will cover 7074 square degrees of the high latitude sky was started at Arecibo, using the 7-beam feed L-band feed array (ALFA). Known as the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey, the program is producing a census of HI-bearing objects over a cosmologically significant volume of the local Universe. With respect to previous blind HI surveys, ALFALFA offers an improvement of about one order of magnitude in sensitivity, 4 times the angular resolution, 3 times the spectral resolution, and 1.6 times the total bandwidth of HIPASS. ALFALFA can detect 7 X 10**4 D**2 solar masses of HI, where D is the source distance in Mpc. As of mid 2007, 44% of the survey observations and 15% of the source extraction are completed. We discuss the status of the survey and present a few preliminary results, in particular with reference to the proposed "dark galaxy" VirgoHI21.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Arecibo Ultra-Deep Survey (AUDS) is a blind H i survey aimed at detecting galaxies beyond the local Universe in the 21-cm emission line of neutral hydrogen (H i). The Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) was used to image an area of 1.35 deg2 to a redshift depth of 0.16, using a total on-source integration time of over 700 h. The long integration time and small observation area makes it one of the most sensitive H i surveys, with a noise level of ∼75 μJy per 21.4 kHz (equivalent to 4.5 km s−1 at redshift z = 0). We detect 247 galaxies in the survey, more than doubling the number already detected in AUDS60. The mass range of detected galaxies is $\log (M_{\rm H\,{\small I}}~[h_{70}^{-2}\, {\rm M}_\odot ]) = 6.32\!-\!10.76$. A modified maximum likelihood method is employed to construct an H i mass function (HIMF). The best fitting Schechter parameters are low-mass slope α = −1.37 ± 0.05, characteristic mass $\log (M^*~[h_{70}^{-2}\, {\rm M}_\odot ]) = 10.15 \pm 0.09$, and density $\Phi _* = (2.41 \pm 0.57) \times 10^{-3} h_{70}^3$ Mpc−3 dex−1. The sample was divided into low- and high-redshift bins to investigate the evolution of the HIMF. No change in low-mass slope α was measured, but an increased characteristic mass M*, was noted in the higher redshift sample. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey data to define relative galaxy number density, the dependence of the HIMF with environment was also investigated in the two AUDS regions. We find no significant variation in α or M*. In the surveyed region, we measured a cosmic H i density $\Omega _{\rm H\,{\small I}} = (3.55 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-4}\, h_{70}^{-1}$. There appears to be no evolutionary trend in $\Omega _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$ above 2σ significance between redshifts of 0 and 0.16.

Abstract:The `Local Volume HI Survey' (LVHIS) comprises deep HI spectral line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of 82 nearby, gas-rich galaxies, supplemented by multi-wavelength images. Our sample consists of all galaxies with Local Group velocities v_LG < 550 km/s or distances D < 10 Mpc that are detected in the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). Using full synthesis observations in at least three configurations of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we obtain detailed HI maps for a complete sample of gas-rich galaxies with Dec < -30 deg. Here we present a comprehensive LVHIS Galaxy Atlas, including the overall gas distribution, mean velocity field, velocity dispersion, and position-velocity diagrams, together with a homogeneous set of measured and derived galaxy properties. Our primary goal is to investigate the HI morphologies, kinematics, and environment at high resolution and sensitivity. LVHIS galaxies represent a wide range of morphologies and sizes; our measured HI masses range from ~10^7 to 10^10 Msun, based on independent distance estimates. The LVHIS Galaxy Atlas (including FITS files) is available on-line.

Abstract:Observations of neutral hydrogen can provide a wealth of information about the distribution and kinematics of galaxies. To detect HI beyond the ionisation edge of galaxy disks, column density sensitivities have to be achieved that probe the regime of Lyman limit systems. Typically HI observations are limited to a brightness sensitivity of NHI~10^19 cm-2 but this has to be improved by at least an order of magnitude. In this paper, reprocessed data is presented that was originally observed for the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). HIPASS provides complete coverage of the region that has been observed for the Westerbork Virgo Filament HI Survey (WVFS), presented in accompanying papers, and thus is an excellent product for data comparison. The region of interest extends from 8 to 17 hours in right ascension and from -1 to 10 degrees in declination. Although the original HIPASS product already has good flux sensitivity, the sensitivity and noise characteristics can be significantly improved with a different processing method. The newly processed data has an 1sigma RMS flux sensitivity of ~10 mJy beam-1 over 26 km s-1, corresponding to a column density sensitivity of ~3\cdot10^17 cm-2. While the RMS sensitivity is improved by only a modest 20%, the more substantial benefit is in the reduction of spectral artefacts near bright sources by more than an order of magnitude. In the reprocessed region we confirm all previously catalogued HIPASS sources and have identified 29 additional sources of which 14 are completely new HI detections. Extended emission or companions were sought in the nearby environment of each discrete detection. With the improved sensitivity after reprocessing and its large sky coverage, the HIPASS data is a valuable resource for detection of faint HI emission.(Abridged)

Abstract:Neutral hydrogen represents the major observable baryonic constituent of galaxies that fuels the formation of stars through the transformation in molecular hydrogen. The emission of the hydrogen recombination line Halpha is the most direct tracer of the process that transforms gas (fuel) into stars. We continue to present Halpha3 (acronym for Halpha-alpha-alpha), an extensive Halpha+[NII] narrow-band imaging campaign of galaxies selected from the HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA), using the instrumentation available at the San Pedro Martir observatory (Mexico). In only four years since 2011 we were able to complete in 48 nights the Halpha imaging observations of 724 galaxies in the region of the Coma supercluster 10^h < R.A. <16^h; 24^o < Dec. <28^o and 3900<cz<9000 kms^{-1}. Of these, 603 are selected from the HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA) and constitute a 97% complete sample. They provide for the first time a complete census of the massive star formation properties of local gas-rich galaxies belonging to different environments (cluster vs filaments), morphological type (spirals vs dwarf Irr), over a wide range of stellar mass (10^{8}-10^{11.5} Modot) in the Coma Supercluster. The present Paper V provides the Halpha data and the derived star formation rates for the observed galaxies.

The Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey: extended and remastered data release

Abstract:This paper describes the extended data release of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey (eDR). It comprises science-grade quality data for 895 galaxies obtained with the PMAS/PPak instrument at the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory along the last 12 years, using the V500 setup (3700-7500Å, 6Å/FWHM) and the CALIFA observing strategy. It includes galaxies of any morphological type, star-formation stage, a wide range of stellar masses ($\sim$10$^7$ 10$^{12}$ Msun ), at an average redshift of $\sim$0.015 (90\% within 0.005$<$z$<$0.05). Primarily selected based on the projected size and apparent magnitude, we demonstrate that it can be volume corrected resulting in a statistically limited but representative sample of the population of galaxies in the nearby Universe. All the data were homogeneous re-reduced, introducing a set of modifications to the previous reduction. The most relevant is the development and implementation of a new cube-reconstruction algorithm that provides with an (almost) seeing-limited spatial resolution (FWHM PSF $\sim$1.0").To illustrate the usability and quality of the data, we extracted two aperture spectra for each galaxy (central 1.5" and fully integrated), and analyze them using pyFIT3D. We obtain a set of observational and physical properties of both the stellar populations and the ionized gas, that have been compared for the two apertures, exploring their distributions as a function of the stellar masses and morphologies of the galaxies, comparing with recent results in the literature. Abstract:We describe the HI component of the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS). The SGPS is a large-scale project to image at arcminute resolution the HI spectral line and 21 cm continuum emission in parts of the plane of the Milky Way. The survey covers Galactic longitudes 253 deg < l < 358 deg and latitudes |b| <1.5 deg (SGPS I), plus a first quadrant extension covering 5 deg < l < 20 deg and |b| <1.5 deg (SGPS II). The survey combines data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Parkes Radio Telescope for sensitivity to angular scales ranging from 2 arcminutes to several degrees. The combined data cover 325 sq-deg and have an rms sensitivity of 1.6 K. Here we describe the HI observations and data reduction in detail, and present examples from the final data products. The complete dataset is publicly available through the Australia Telescope National Facility's HI Surveys archive. This dataset provides an unprecedented view of the neutral component of interstellar hydrogen in the inner Milky Way.
The Second LBA Calibrator Survey of southern compact extragalactic radio sources - LCS2

Abstract:We present the second catalogue of accurate positions and correlated flux densities for 1100 compact extragalactic radio sources that were not observed before 2008 at high angular resolution. The catalogue spans the declination range -90 deg, -30 deg and was constructed from nineteen 24-hour VLBI observing sessions with the Australian Long Baseline Array at 8.3 GHz. The catalogue presents the final part of the program that was started in 2008. The goals of that campaign were 1) to extend the number of compact radio sources with precise coordinates and measure their correlated flux densities, which can be used for phase referencing VLBI and ALMA observations, geodetic VLBI, search for sources with significant offsets with respect to Gaia positions, and space navigation; 2) to extend the complete flux-limited sample of compact extragalactic sources to the Southern Hemisphere; and 3) to investigate the parsec-scale properties of sources from the high-frequency AT20G survey. The median uncertainty of the source positions is 3.5 mas. As a result of this VLBI campaign, the number of compact radio sources south of declination -40 deg which have measured VLBI correlated flux densities and positions known to milliarcsecond accuracy has increased by over a factor of 6.

High-resolution VLA Imaging of SDSS Stripe 82 at 1.4 GHz

Abstract:We present a high-resolution radio survey of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Southern Equatorial Stripe, a.k.a. Stripe 82. This 1.4 GHz survey was conducted with the Very Large Array (VLA) primarily in the A-configuration, with supplemental B-configuration data to increase sensitivity to extended structure. The survey has an angular resolution of 1.8" and achieves a median rms noise of 52 microJy/bm over 92 deg^2. This is the deepest 1.4 GHz survey to achieve this large of an area, filling a gap in the phase space between small, deep and large, shallow surveys. It also serves as a pilot project for a larger high-resolution survey with the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA). We discuss the technical design of the survey and details of the observations, and we outline our method for data reduction. We present a catalog of 17,969 isolated radio components, for an overall source density of ~195 sources/deg^2. The astrometric accuracy of the data is excellent, with an internal check utilizing multiply-observed sources yielding an rms scatter of 0.19" in both right ascension and declination. A comparison to the SDSS DR7 Quasar Catalog further confirms that the astrometry is well tied to the optical reference frame, with mean offsets of 0.02" +/- 0.01" in right ascension, and 0.01" +/- 0.02" in declination. A check of our photometry reveals a small, negative CLEAN-like bias on the level of 35 microJy. We report on the catalog completeness, finding that 97% of FIRST-detected quasars are recovered in the new Stripe 82 radio catalog, while faint, extended sources are more likely to be resolved out by the resolution bias. We conclude with a discussion of the optical counterparts to the catalog sources, including 76 newly-detected radio quasars. Abstract:We studied the effect of the V/III flux ratio and substrate temperature on magnetotransport properties and lattice parameters of Ga0.96Mn0.04As grown by molecular beam epitaxy. For all the substrate temperatures, the conductivities and Curie temperatures of the layers were found to increase as the V/III flux ratio approaches 1. The Curie temperature as high as 95 K was achieved for the Ga0.96Mn0.04As samples grown at 240C and a V/III ratio of about 1.5. The lattice parameter of Ga0.96Mn0.04As increased with decreasing V/III ratio and/or increasing growth temperature. Possible reasons for the effect of V/III ratio on the magnetotransport properties and lattice parameter of GaMnAs are discussed.

Abstract:We explain the entire process by which we conduct the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey. The survey is a high resolution (3.4'), large area (13000 deg^2), large Galactic velocity range (-750 to +750 km/s), high spectral resolution (0.18 km/s) survey of the Galaxy in the 21 cm line hyperfine transition of hydrogen conducted at Arecibo Observatory. We touch on some of the new Galactic science being conducted using the GALFA-HI survey, ranging from High-Velocity Clouds to HI narrow-line self-absorption. We explain the many technical challenges that confront such a survey, including baseline ripple, gain variation and asymmetrical beam shapes. To correct for these systematic effects we use various newly developed methods, which we describe in detail. We also explain the data reduction process step by step, starting with the raw time-ordered data and ending with fully calibrated maps. The effects of each step of the data reduction on the final data product is shown sequentially. We conclude with future directions for the ongoing survey.

A New Radio Continuum Survey of the Sky at 1465 MHz between declinations -52 degrees and +68 degrees

Abstract:We have mapped the total sky brightness at 1465 MHz in two adjacent 60-degree declination bands with the portable 5.5-m parabolic reflector of the Galactic Emission Mapping (GEM) project, an on-going international collaboration to survey the radio continuum of the sky in decimeter and centimeter wavelengths. The observations were conducted from two locations, one in the USA and the other in Brazil, using a novel instrumental approach to overcome the well-known shortcomings of survey experiments. Our strategy consists of a 1-rpm rotating dish to circularly scan the sky at 30 degrees from zenith. The dish uses a rim-halo to re-direct the spillover sidelobes of its backfire helical feed toward the sky and the entire assembly has been enclosed inside a wire mesh ground shield in order to minimize and level out the contamination from the ground. The diffraction characteristics of this set-up have been succesfully modelled and undesired systematic striping across the observed bands has been carefully removed by a baseline propagation method which exploits the time-forward and time-backward intersections of the circular scans. The map displays nearly 300 hours of our best quality data taken with a HPBW of 5.4 degrees at a sensitivity of 20 mK.

ALFALFA: an Exploration of the z=0 HI Universe

Abstract:The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey is a program aimed at obtaining a census of HI-bearing objects over a cosmologically significant volume of the local Universe. It will cover 7074 square degrees of the high latitude sky accessible with the Arecibo 305m telescope, using the 7-beam feed L-band feed array (ALFA). Started in February 2005, as of Summer of 2007 survey observations are 44\% complete. ALFALFA offers an improvement of about one order of magnitude in sensitivity, 4 times the angular resolution, 3 times the spectral resolution, and 1.6 times the total bandwidth of HIPASS. Although it will cover only one quarter the sky solid angle surveyed by HIPASS, ALFALFA will detect approximately six times as many sources, with a median depth of 110 Mpc. Preliminary results of ALFALFA are presented, with emphasis on those related with the Virgo cluster.

Abstract:The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey is a program aimed at obtaining a census of HI-bearing objects over a cosmologically significant volume of the local universe. When complete in ~3-4 years, it will cover 7000 square degrees of high latitude sky using the 305m telescope and the seven-beam Arecibo L-band feed array (ALFA). As of May 1, 2008, almost 60% of the required observations are complete and a catalog exists in preliminary form for 25% of the final sky area. ALFALFA is detecting about twice as many HI sources as predicted based on previously published HI mass functions and should deliver a final catalog of >25000 extragalactic HI sources. ALFALFA will detect hundreds of galaxies with HI masses less than 10**7.5 solar masses and similarly large numbers greater than 10**10.3 Msun. Its centroiding accuracy allows for the immediate identification of highly probably optical counterparts to each HI detection. Fewer than 3% of all extragalactic HI sources, and < 1% of ones with HI masses > 10**9.5 Msun cannot be identified with a stellar counterpart. The hundreds of HI sources with observed line widths of 20-30 km/s include a population of optically faint dwarf galaxies. The objects with highest HI masses exhibit a range of morphologies, optical colors and surface brightnesses, but most appear to be massive disk systems. The latter represent the population likely to dominate future studies of HI at high redshift.

Abstract:This paper defines the UK Infra-Red Telescope (UKIRT) Hemisphere Survey (UHS) and release of the remaining ~12,700 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://sq.deg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> of J-band survey data products. The UHS will provide continuous J and K-band coverage in the northern hemisphere from a declination of 0 deg to 60 deg by combining the existing Large Area Survey, Galactic Plane Survey and Galactic Clusters Survey conducted under the UKIRT Infra-red Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) programme with this new additional area not covered by UKIDSS. The released data includes J-band imaging and source catalogues over the new area, which, together with UKIDSS, completes the J-band UHS coverage over the full ~17,900 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://sq.deg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> area. 98 per cent of the data in this release have passed quality control criteria, the remaining 2 per cent being scheduled for re-observation. The median 5-sigma point source sensitivity of the released data is 19.6 mag (Vega). The median full width at half-maximum of the point spread function across the dataset is 0.75 arcsec. In this paper, we outline the survey management, data acquisition, processing and calibration, quality control and archiving as well as summarising the characteristics of the released data products. The data are initially available to a limited consortium with a world-wide release scheduled for August 2018.

Abstract:We present the final band‐merged European Large‐Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) Catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90 and 175 μm, and the associated data at U, g′, r′, i′, Z, J, H, K and 20 cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data‐reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered and the completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band‐merging and optical association strategy is given. The total Catalogue consists of 3762 sources. 23 per cent of the 15‐μm sources and 75 per cent of the 6.7‐μm sources are stars. For extragalactic sources observed in three or more infrared bands, colour–colour diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are shown for selected sources and compared with cirrus, M82 and Arp220 starburst, and active galactic nuclei (AGN) dust torus models. Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the Isaac Newton Telescope ugriz Wide Field Survey permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method [∼10 per cent in (1 +z) for galaxies]. The redshift distribution is given for selected ELAIS bands and colour–redshift diagrams are discussed. There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (log10 of 1–1000 μm luminosity Lir > 12.22) in the ELAIS Catalogue (14 per cent of 15‐μm galaxies with known z), many with Arp220‐like SEDs. 10 per cent of the 15‐μm sources are genuine optically blank fields to r′= 24: these must have very high infrared‐to‐optical ratios and probably have z > 0.6, so are high‐luminosity dusty starbursts or Type 2 AGN. Nine hyperluminous infrared galaxies (Lir > 13.22) and nine extremely red objects (EROs) (r−K > 6) are found in the survey. The latter are interpreted as ultraluminous dusty infrared galaxies at z∼ 1. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star formation rate between z= 0 and 1. There is also a surprisingly large population of luminous (Lir > 11.5), cool (cirrus‐type SEDs) galaxies, with Lir−Lopt > 0, implying AV > 1.
