Abstract:We have made multi-epoch VLBI observations of H2O maser emission in the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151 with the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) from 2005 May to 2007 October. The detected maser features are distributed within an 1\arcsec$\times$1\arcsec (2000 au$\times$2000 au at the source position) around the ultra-compact H {\small\bf II} region seen in radio continuum emission. Their bipolar morphology and expanding motion traced through their relative proper motions indicate that they are excited by an energetic bipolar outflow. Our three-dimensional model fitting has shown that the maser kinematical structure in IRAS 06061+2151 is able to be explained by a biconical outflow with a large opening angle ($>$ 50\degr). The position angle of the flow major axis coincides very well with that of the large scale jet seen in 2.1$\:\mu\rmn{m}$ hydrogen emission. This maser geometry indicates the existence of dual structures composed of a collimated jet and a less collimated massive molecular flow. We have also detected a large velocity gradient in the southern maser group. This can be explained by a very small (on a scale of several tens of au) and clumpy (the density contrast by an order of magnitude or more) structure of the parental cloud. Such a structure may be formed by strong instability of shock front or splitting of high density core.

Radio Continuum and Water Maser Observations of the High-Mass Protostar IRAS 19035+0641 A

Abstract:We present Very Large Array (VLA) 1.3 cm continuum and 22.2 GHz H$_2$O maser observations of the high-mass protostellar object IRAS 19035+0641 A. Our observations unveil an elongated bipolar 1.3 cm continuum structure at scales $\lesssim500\,$au which, together with a rising in-band spectral index, strongly suggests that the radio emission toward IRAS 19035+0641 A arises from an ionized jet. In addition, eight individual water maser spots well aligned with the jet axis were identified. The Stokes V spectrum of the brightest H$_2$O maser line ($\sim100\,$Jy) shows a possible Zeeman splitting and is well represented by the derivatives of two Gaussian components fitted to the Stokes I profile. The measured $B_{\mathrm{los}}$ are $123\,(\pm27)$ and $156\,(\pm8)\,$mG, translating to a pre-shock magnetic field of $\approx7\,$mG. Subsequent observations to confirm the Zeeman splitting showed intense variability in all the water maser spots, with the brightest maser completely disappearing. The observed variability in a one-year time scale could be the result of an accretion event. These findings strengthen our interpretation of IRAS 19035+0641 A as a high-mass protostar in an early accretion/outflow evolutionary phase.

A collimated jet and an infalling-rotating disk in G192.16-3.84 traced by H2O maser emission

Abstract:We report H2O masers associated with the massive-star forming region G192.16-3.84 observed with the new Japan VLBI network at three epochs spanned for two months, which have revealed the three-dimensional kinematical structure of the whole \h2o maser region in G192.16-3.84, containing two young stellar objects separated by ~1200 AU. The maser spatio-kinematical structure has well persisted since previous observations, in which the masers are expected to be associated with a highly-collimated bipolar jet and an infalling-rotating disk in the northern and southern clusters of H2O maser features, respectively. We estimated a jet expansion speed of ~100 km/s and re-estimated a dynamical age of the whole jet to be 5.6x10^4 yrs. We have investigated the spatial distribution of Doppler velocities during the previous and present observations and relative proper motions of H2O maser features in the southern cluster, and a relative bulk motion between the two maser clusters. They are well explained by a model of an infalling-rotating disk with a radius of ~1000 AU and a central stellar mass of 5-10 M_sun, rather than by a model of a bipolar jet perpendicular to the observed CO outflow. Based on the derived H2O maser spatio-kinematical parameters, we discuss the formation mechanism of the massive young stellar objects and the outflow development in G192.16-3.84.

The spatio-kinematical structure and distance of the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 19134+2131

Abstract:Using the VLBA, we have observed H2O maser emission in the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 19134+2131(I19134), in which the H2O maser spectrum has two groups of emission features separated in radial velocity by ~100 km/s. We also obtained optical images of I19134 with the HST to locate the bipolar reflection nebula in this source for the first time. The spatio-kinematical structure of the H2O masers indicates the existence of a fast, collimated (precessing) flow having a projected extent of ~140 mas and an expansion rate of ~1.9 mas/yr on the sky plane, which gives a dynamical age of only ~40 yr. The two detected optical lobes are also separated by ~150 mas in almost the same direction as that of the collimated flow. The good agreement between the extent and orientation of the H2O maser outflow and optical lobes suggests that the lobes have been recently formed along the collimated fast flow. The positions of all of the detected maser features have been measured with respect to the reference source J1925+2106 over one year. Therefore we analyzed maser feature motions that consist of the combination of an annual parallax, a secular motion following Galactic rotation, and the intrinsic motions within the flow. We obtain an annual-parallax distance to I19134 of D~8 kpc kpc and estimate its location in the Galaxy to be (R, theta, z)=(7.4 kpc, 62 deg, 0.65 kpc). From the mean motion of the blue-shifted and red-shifted clusters of maser features, we estimate the 3-D secular motion of I19134 to be (V_{R}, V_{theta}, V_{z})=(3, 125, 8) [km/s]. From the height from the Galactic plane, z, and the velocity component perpendicular to the Galactic plane, V_{z}, we estimate a rough upper limit of ~9 M_{sun} to the stellar mass of I19134's progenitor.

Abstract:We carried out observations of the 22 GHz H2O masers in a high-mass protostar S255 NIRS 3 by using VERA. We measured the proper motions of the 22 GHz H2O masers associated with a bipolar outflow. The expansion velocity of the blueshifted bow shock traced by the 22 GHz H2O masers was 28 km s-1 corresponding to a dynamical timescale of 60 years. The direction of the maser outflow is slightly tilted compared with the radio jet, which could suggest a more recent ejection episode during the accretion burst event. The total flux density of the 22 GHz H2O masers has gradually increased from early 2017 and has become almost constant in 2018. For the first time, we reveal extended H2O maser emission at 22 GHz in a star forming region, which is partly resolved out by VERA and even by the most extended VLA configurations. We find that the flux variation of such an extended component is similar to that of the unresolved maser emission. We also conducted observations of the submillimeter continuum and the 321 GHz H2O masers with ALMA at Band 7. The continuum emission does not show significant variations compared with the previous observations performed 5 months before. We mapped the 321 GHz H2O masers in S255 NIRS 3 providing the fourth example, for this maser, of the spatial distribution in a high-mass star-forming region. The lower ratio of the 22 GHz/321 GHz maser luminosity in the blueshifted bow shock suggests a temperature (>1000 K), higher than for the other maser features in this region. We conclude that the bow shock structure traced by the 22 GHz H2O maser features is unlikely to be originating at the interface between the radio jet powered by the recent accretion outburst and the surrounding medium. The brightening of the 22 GHz H2O masers could be due to radiative excitation by photons form the infrared outburst escaping along the cavity created by the newly ejected material.

Abstract:Results of astrometric very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations towards an extreme OH/IR star candidate NSV17351 are presented. We used the VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) VLBI array to observe 22\,GHz H$_2$O masers of NSV17351. We derived an annual parallax of 0.247$\pm$0.035 mas which corresponds to a distance of 4.05$\pm$0.59 kpc. By averaging the proper motions of 15 maser spots, we obtained the systemic proper motion of NSV17351 to be ($\mu_{\alpha}\cos{\delta}, \mu_{\delta}$)$^{\mathrm{avg}}$ $=$ ($-$1.19 $\pm$ 0.11, 1.30 $\pm$ 0.19) mas\,yr$^{-1}$. The maser spots spread out over a region of 20 mas $\times$ 30 mas, which can be converted to a spatial distribution of $\sim$80 au $\times$ $\sim$120 au at the source distance. Internal motions of the maser spots suggest an outward moving maser region with respect to the estimated position of the central star. From single dish monitoring of the H$_2$O maser emission, we estimate the pulsation period of NSV17351 to be 1122$\pm$24 days. This is the first report of the periodic activity of NSV17351, indicating that NSV17351 could have a mass of $\sim$4\,M$_{\odot}$. We confirmed that the time variation of H$_2$O masers can be used as a period estimator of variable OH/IR stars. Furthermore, by inspecting dozens of double-peaked H$_2$O maser spectra from the last 40 years, we detected a long-term acceleration in the radial velocity of the circumstellar matter to be $0.17\pm0.03$ km\,s$^{-1}$\,yr$^{-1}$ Finally, we determined the position and kinematics of NSV17351 in the Milky Way Galaxy and found that NSV17351 is located in an interarm region between the Outer and Perseus arms. We note that astrometric VLBI observations towards extreme OH/IR stars are useful samples for studies of the Galactic dynamics.

Abstract:Abstract We report sub-parsec-scale observations of the 321 GHz H2O emission line in the radio galaxy NGC 1052. The H2O line emitter size is constrained in <0.6 mas distributed on the continuum core component. The brightness temperature exceeding 106 K and the intensity variation indicate certain evidence for maser emission. The maser spectrum consists of redshifted and blueshifted velocity components spanning ∼400 km s−1, separated by a local minimum around the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The spatial distribution of maser components shows a velocity gradient along the jet direction, implying that the population-inverted gas is driven by the jets interacting with the molecular torus. We identified a significant change of the maser spectra between two sessions separated by 14 days. The maser profile showed a radial velocity drift of 127 ± 13 km s−1 yr−1 implying inward gravitational acceleration at 5000 Schwarzschild radii. The results demonstrate the feasibility of future very long baseline interferometry observations to resolve the jet–torus interacting region.

Abstract:We wish to perform a statistical study of the location and motion of individual 22 GHz water maser cloudlets, characterized by sizes that are within a few au, with respect to the radio thermal emission from young stellar objects (YSO). For this purpose, we have been carrying out the Protostellar Outflows at the EarliesT Stages (POETS) survey of a sample (38) of high-mass YSOs. The water maser positions and three-dimensional (3D) velocities were determined through Very Long Baseline Array observations with accuracies of a few milliarcsec (mas) and a few km/s, respectively. The position of the ionized core of the protostellar wind, marking the YSO, was determined through sensitive continuum Jansky Very Large Array observations with a typical error of 20 mas. The statistic of the separation of the water masers from the radio continuum shows that 84% of the masers are found within 1000 au from the YSO and 45% of them are within 200 au. Therefore, we can conclude that the 22 GHz water masers are a reliable proxy for the YSO position. The distribution of maser luminosity is strongly peaked towards low values, indicating that about half of the maser population is still undetected with the current Very Long Baseline Interferometry detection thresholds of 50-100 mJy/beam. Next-generation, sensitive radio interferometers will exploit these weak masers for an improved sampling of the velocity and magnetic fields around the YSOs. The average direction of the water maser proper motions provides a statistically-significant estimate for the orientation of the jet emitted by the YSO: 55% of the maser proper motions are directed on the sky within an angle of 30 deg from the jet axis. Finally, we show that our measurements of 3D maser velocities statistically support models in which water maser emission arises from planar shocks with propagation direction close to the plane of the sky.

A kinematic study of the disc-outflow system around a high-mass protostar G59.783+0.065 probed by methanol and water masers

Abstract:Class II CH3OH masers are used as a convenient tracer of disc-like structures in high-mass star formation. However, more than half of them show a complex distribution in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) maps. The origin of such a complex distribution is still unknown. We conducted VLBI monitoring observations to unveil the origin of a complex class II CH3OH maser in the high-mass star-forming region G59.783+0.065. We observed the CH3OH maser at 6.7 GHz and the H2O maser at 22 GHz to probe detailed circumstellar kinematics and structures by the Japanese VLBI network and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry. We found similar bipolar distributions in both masers, specifically two clusters located 2000 au apart along the East-West direction. We detected a linear distribution of CH3OH masers in the Western cluster. A position-velocity diagram shows that the Western CH3OH masers trace a rotating disc-wind or infalling component inside an edge-on disc-like structure. In contrast to the simple bipolar expanding motions of the H2O masers, the CH3OH masers exhibited complex motions despite their spatial coincidence. Some of the Eastern CH3OH masers showed bipolar expansions similar to the H2O masers, while others displayed random or even inward motions. Such complex kinematics and their close association with the H2O maser could occur at the boundary between outflow and inflow. We suggest that the complex distribution of class II CH3OH masers, like G59.783+0.065 arises from several distinct circumstellar structures that simultaneously achieve maser excitation.

Abstract:We performed an H 2 O maser survey towards 274 Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey(BGPS) sources with 85°< l < 193°using the Nanshan 25 m radio telescope.We detected 25 H 2 O masers,and five of them are new detections.The detection rate of H 2 O masers in our sample is 9% which is very low.The detection rate of H 2 O masers increases as the 1.1 mm flux density of BGPS sources increases,and both the peak flux density and luminosity of H 2 O masers increase as the sources evolve.The detection rate of H 2 O masers toward BGPS sources without HCO+emission is low.The BGPS sources associated with both H 2 O and CH3 OH masers seem to be more compact than those only associated with H 2 O masers.This indicates that the sources with both masers may be in a relatively later evolutionary stage.The strongest H 2 O maser source G133.715+01.217,also well known as W3 IRS 5 which has a flux density of 2.9×10 3 Jy,was detected at eight different nearby positions.By measuring the correlation between the flux densities of these H 2 O masers and their angular distance from the true source location,we get the influence radius r =(1/0.8)log(F 0 /3rms).For our observations,strong sources can be detected anywhere within this radius.It is helpful to determine whether or not a weak maser nearby the strong maser is a true detection.
22 GHz H 2 O Maser Survey Towards 221 BGPS Sources

Abstract:We performed a 22 GHz H2O maser survey towards 221 Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) sources. We detected 107 H2O masers, of which 12 are new. The detection rate is 48.4 per cent for our sample. We obtained the positions of five new H2O masers via On The Fly (OTF) observations. The detection rate of H2O masers is correlated with continuum emission fluxes of BGPS sources at far-infrared, sub-millimetre and millimetre wavelengths. We employed the classification of Dunham et al. to classify the evolutionary stage of BGPS sources into Group 0, 1, 2, and 3. The detection rate and velocity range of H2O masers increases as the BGPS sources evolve from Group 1 to Group 3. The BGPS sources associated with both H2O and CH3OH masers are more compact than that associated with either only H2O or only CH3OH masers. This indicates that the sources associated with both H2O and CH3OH masers are in relative later evolutionary stage. The detection rate of H2O masers towards BGPS sources displaying evidence of the collapse phenomenon is 62.1 per cent, which suggests that most BGPS sources showing indications of collapse phenomena contain ongoing active star formation activities.

Abstract:W75N(B) is a massive star-forming region that contains three radio continuum sources (VLA 1, VLA 2, and VLA 3), which are thought to be three massive young stellar objects at three different evolutionary stages. VLA 1 is the most evolved and VLA 2 the least evolved source. The 22 GHz H2O masers associated with VLA 1 and VLA 2 have been mapped at several epochs over eight years. While the H2O masers in VLA 1 show a persistent linear distribution along a radio jet, those in VLA 2 are distributed around an expanding shell. Furthermore, H2O maser polarimetric measurements revealed magnetic fields aligned with the two structures. Using new polarimetric observations of H2O masers, we aim to confirm the elliptical expansion of the shell-like structure around VLA 2 and, at the same time, to determine if the magnetic fields around the two sources have changed. The NRAO Very Long Baseline Array was used to measure the linear polarization and the Zeeman-splitting of the 22 GHz H2O masers towards the massive star-forming region W75N(B). The H2O maser distribution around VLA 1 is unchanged from that previously observed. We made an elliptical fit of the H2O masers around VLA 2. We find that the shell-like structure is still expanding along the direction parallel to the thermal radio jet of VLA 1. While the magnetic field around VLA 1 has not changed in the past 7 years, the magnetic field around VLA 2 has changed its orientation according to the new direction of the major-axis of the shell-like structure and it is now aligned with the magnetic field in VLA 1.

Abstract:Methanol masers at 6.7 GHz are well-known signposts of high-mass star-forming regions. Due to their high brightness, they enable us to derive the three-dimensional gas kinematics near protostars and young stars. We aim to understand the origin of the ring-like structures outlined by methanol maser emission in a number of sources. This emission could be, a priori, spatially associated with an outflow and/or disc around a high-mass protostar. In cases of expansion or rotation, maser proper motions should be, for instance, diverging from the ring centre or perpendicular to the ring radius. Using sensitive, three-epoch observations spanning over eight years with the European VLBI Network, we have started the most direct investigations of maser rings using very accurate proper motion measurements with uncertainties below sim 1\,km We present full results for the five targets of our sample, G23.207$-$00.377, G23.389$+$00.185, G28.817$+$00.365, G31.047$+$00.356, and G31.581$+$00.077, where proper motions show similar characteristics; maser cloudlets do not move inwards towards the centre of the rings but rather outwards. We also include the most circular source, G23.657$-$00.127, in the discussion as a reference. The magnitude of maser proper motions ranges from a maximum of about 13\,km $ to 0.5 km s$^ $. In two of the five sources with a high number of maser spots ($>$\,100), namely G23.207$-$00.377 and G23.389$+$00.185, we show that the size of the best elliptical model, fitted to the distribution of persistent masers, increases in time in a manner similar to the case of G23.657$-$00.127. Moreover, we checked the separations between the pairs of spots from distinct regions, and we were able to assess that G28.817$+$00.365 and G31.047$+$00.356 can be interpreted as showing expanding motions. We analysed the profiles of single maser cloudlets and studied their variability. Contrary to single-dish studies, the interferometric data indicate variability of the emission of single-masing cloudlets. In five of the six targets, namely, G23.207$-$00.377, G23.389$+$00.185, G23.657$-$00.127, G28.817$+$00.365, and G31.047$+$00.356, expansion motions prevail. Only in the case of G31.581$+$00.077 can a scenario of disc-like rotation not be excluded. Complementary observations of thermal tracers as well as searching for ultra-compact H II regions in the same sources are needed. Although the overall morphology of the maser emission has remained stable, the intensities of individual maser cloudlets varied from epoch to epoch, suggesting internal instabilities.

Abstract:From measuring the annual parallax of water masers over one and a half years with VERA, we present the trigonometric parallax and corresponding distance of another newly identified water maser source in the region of IRAS 20231+3440 as $\pi=0.611\pm0.022$ mas and $D=1.64\pm0.06$ kpc respectively. We measured the absolute proper motions of all the newly detected maser spots (30 spots) and presented two pictures describing the possible spatial distribution of the water maser as the morphology marks out an arc of masers whose average proper motion velocity in the jet direction was 14.26 km s$^{-1}$. As revealed by the ALLWISE composite image, and by applying the colour-colour method of YSO identification and classification on photometric archived data, we identified the driving source of the north maser group to be a class I, young stellar object. To further probe the nature of the progenitor, we used the momentum rate maximum value (1.2$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ km s$^{-1}$) of the outflow to satisfy that the progenitor under investigation is a low mass young stellar object concurrently forming alongside an intermediate-mass YSO $\sim 60,000$ au ($\sim 37$ arcsecs) away from it.

Proper motion study of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser rings. I. A sample of sources with little variation

Abstract:Methanol masers at 6.7~GHz are well-known signposts of high-mass star-forming regions. [...] We aim to understand the origin of the ring-like structures outlined by methanol maser emission in a number of sources. This emission could be, a priori, spatially associated with an outflow and/or disc around a high-mass protostar. [...] Using sensitive, three-epoch observations spanning over eight years with the European VLBI Network, we have started the most direct investigations of maser rings using very accurate proper motion measurements with uncertainties below 1\,km~s$^{-1}$. We present full results for the five targets of our sample, G23.207-00.377, G23.389+00.185, G28.817+00.365, G31.047+00.356, and G31.581+00.077, where proper motions show similar characteristics; maser cloudlets do not move inwards towards the centre of the rings but rather outwards. We also include the most circular source, G23.657-00.127, in the discussion as a reference. The magnitude of maser proper motions ranges from a maximum of about 13\,km~s$^{-1}$ to 0.5~km~s$^{-1}$. In two of the five sources with a high number of maser spots (>100), namely G23.207-00.377 and G23.389+00.185, we show that the size of the best elliptical model, fitted to the distribution of persistent masers, increases in time in a manner similar to the case of G23.657-00.127. Moreover, we checked the separations between the pairs of spots from distinct regions, and we were able to assess that G28.817+00.365 and G31.047+00.356 can be interpreted as showing expanding motions. We analysed the profiles of single maser cloudlets and studied their variability. Contrary to single-dish studies, the interferometric data indicate variability of the emission of single-masing cloudlets. In five of the six targets expansion motions prevail. Only in the case of G31.581+00.077 can a scenario of disc-like rotation not be excluded. [...]

Abstract:Highly collimated jets found in AGB and post-AGB stars are expected to play an important role for shaping planetary nebulae. Recent VLBI observations of H2O maser sources have revealed that some of the spatio-kinematical structures of H2O maser sources exhibit stellar jets with extremely spatially and kinematically high collimation. Such stellar H2O maser jets, so-called "water fountain" sources, have been identified in about 10 sources to date. Here we review recent VLBI observations and relevant observational results of the water fountain sources. They have revealed a typical dynamical age and the detailed kinematical structures of the water fountains, possibility of the existence of "equatorial flows", and the evolutionary status of the host stars. The location and kinematics of one of the water fountain sources in the Galaxy is also revealed and shown here.

Abstract:We report observations of 6cm, 3.6cm, 1.3cm, and 7mm radio continuum, conducted with the Very Large Array towards IRAS18566+0408, one of the few sources known to harbor H2CO 6cm maser emission. Our observations reveal that the emission is dominated by an ionized jet at cm wavelengths. Spitzer/IRAC images from GLIMPSE support this interpretation, given the presence of 4.5um excess emission at approximately the same orientation as the cm continuum. The 7mm emission is dominated by thermal dust from a flattened structure almost perpendicular to the ionized jet, thus, the 7mm emission appears to trace a torus associated with a young massive stellar object. The H2CO 6cm maser is coincident with the center of the torus-like structure. Our observations rule out radiative pumping via radio continuum as the excitation mechanism for the H2CO 6cm maser in IRAS18566+0408.

Abstract:The massive young stellar object (MYSO) G358.93-0.03-MM1 showed an extraordinary near-infrared- to (sub-)millimetre-dark and far-infrared-loud accretion burst, which is closely associated with flares of several class II methanol maser transitions, and, later, a 22 GHz water maser flare. Water maser flares provide an invaluable insight into ejection events associated with accretion bursts. Although the short timescale of the 22 GHz water maser flare made it impossible to carry out a very long baseline interferometry observation, we could track it with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). The evolution of the spatial structure of the 22 GHz water masers and their association with the continuum sources in the region is studied with the VLA during two epochs, pre- and post-H2O maser flare. A drastic change in the distribution of the water masers is revealed: in contrast to the four maser groups detected during epoch I, only two newly formed clusters are detected during epoch II. The 22 GHz water masers associated with the bursting source MM1 changed in morphology and emission velocity extent. Clear evidence of the influence of the accretion burst on the ejection from G358.93-0.03-MM1 is presented. The accretion event has also potentially affected a region with a radius of ~2'' (~13 500 AU at 6.75 kpc), suppressing water masers associated with other point sources in this region.

Abstract:We report on high spatial resolution water maser observations, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, towards water maser sites previously identified in the H2O southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS). Of the 540 masers identified in the single-dish observations of Walsh et al. (2011), we detect emission in all but 31 fields. We report on 2790 spectral features (maser spots), with brightnesses ranging from 0.06 Jy to 576Jy and with velocities ranging from -238.5 to +300.5km/s. These spectral features are grouped into 631 maser sites. We have compared the positions of these sites to the literature to associate the sites with astrophysical objects. We identify 433 (69 per cent) with star formation, 121 (19 per cent) with evolved stars and 77 (12 per cent) as unknown. We find that maser sites associated with evolved stars tend to have more maser spots and have smaller angular sizes than those associated with star formation. We present evidence that maser sites associated with evolved stars show an increased likelihood of having a velocity range between 15 and 35 km/s compared to other maser sites. Of the 31 non-detections, we conclude they were not detected due to intrinsic variability and confirm previous results showing that such variable masers tend to be weaker and have simpler spectra with fewer peaks.
