Abstract:We report pulsations in the X-ray flux of RX J0101.3-7211 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with a period of 455+/-2 s in XMM-Newton EPIC-PN data. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law with a photon index of 0.6+/-0.1. Timing analysis of ROSAT PSPC and HRI archival data confirms the pulsations and indicates a period increase of ~5 s since 1993. RX J0101.3-7211 varied in brightness during the ROSAT observations with timescales of years with a maximum unabsorbed flux of 6 x 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (0.1 - 2.4 keV). The flux during the XMM-Newton observation in the ROSAT band was lower than during the faintest ROSAT detection. The unabsorbed luminosity derived from the EPIC-PN spectrum is 2 x 10^35 erg s^-1 (0.2 - 10.0 keV) assuming a distance of 60 kpc. Optical spectra of the proposed counterpart taken at the 2.3 m telescope of MSSSO in Australia in August 2000 show strong Halpha emission and indicate a Be star. The X-ray and optical data confirm RX J0101.3-7211 as a Be/X-ray binary pulsar in the SMC.

Abstract:We carry out a dedicated study of 3XMM J181923.7-170616 with an approximate pulsation period of 400 s using the XMM-Newton and Swift observations spanning across nine years. We have refined the period of the source to 407.904(7) s (at epoch MJD 57142) and constrained the 1 sigma upper limit on the period derivative (P) over dot <= 1.1 x 10(-8)s s(-1). The source radiates hard, persistent X-ray emission during the observation epochs, which is best described by an absorbed power-law model (Gamma similar to 0.2-0.8) plus faint Fe lines at 6.4 and 6.7 keV. The X-ray flux revealed a variation within a factor of 2, along with a spectral hardening as the flux increased. The pulse shape is sinusoid-like and the spectral properties of different phases do not present significant variation. The absorption N-H (similar to 1.3 x 10(22) cm(-2)) is similar to the total Galactic hydrogen column density along the direction, indicating that it is a distant source. A search for the counterpart in optical and near-infrared surveys reveals a low-mass K-type giant, while the existence of a Galactic OB supergiant is excluded. A symbiotic X-ray binary (SyXB) is the favored nature of 3XMM. J181923.7-170616 and can essentially explain the low luminosity of 2.78 x 10(34)d(10)(2) erg s(-1), slow pulsation, hard X-ray spectrum, and possible K3 III companion. An alternative explanation of the source is a persistent Be X-ray binary (BeXB) with a companion star no earlier than B3-type.
Discovery of an X-Ray Pulsar in the SMC: AX J0058-7203

Abstract:We report on the discovery and analysis of an X-ray pulsar, AX J0058-7203, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This pulsar exhibits coherent pulsations at P= 280.3 s with a double-peak structure. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a simple power-law model of photon index ~ 0.7. No significant change of the pulsation period over the observation was found. A comparison with ROSAT observations in the same field reveals that AX J0058-7203 is highly variable, and is most likely a Be star binary pulsar.

Discovery of a 26.2 day period in the long-term X-ray light curve of SXP 1323: a very short orbital period for a long spin period pulsar

Abstract:Context. About 120 Be/X-ray binaries (BeXBs) are known in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC); about half of them are pulsating with periods from a few to hundreds of seconds. SXP 1323 is one of the longest-period pulsars known in this galaxy. Aims. SXP 1323 is in the field of view of a large set of calibration observations that we analyse systematically, focusing on the time analysis, in search of periodic signals. Methods. We analyse all available X-ray observations of SXP 1323 from Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra, in the time range from 1999 to the end of 2016. We perform a Lomb-Scargle periodogram search in the band 2.5-10 keV on all observations to detect the neutron star spin period and constrain its long-term evolution. We also perform an orbital period search on the long-term light curve, merging all datasets. Results. We report the discovery of a 26.188+-0.045 d period analysing data from Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra, which confirms the optical period derived from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) data. If this corresponds to the orbital period, this would be very short with respect to what is expected from the spin/orbital period relationship. We furthermore report on the spin period evolution in the last years. The source is spinning-up with an average rate of Pdot/P of 0.018 yr-1, decreasing from 1340 to 1100 s, in the period from 2006 to the end of 2016, which is also extreme with respect to the other Be/X-ray pulsars. From 2010 to the end of 2014, the pulse period is not clearly detectable, although the source was still bright. Conclusions. SXP 1323 is a peculiar BeXB due to its long pulse period, rapid spin-up for several years, and short orbital period. A continuous monitoring of the source in the next years is necessary to establish the long-term behaviour of the spin period.

Spectral properties of the soft excess pulsar RX J0059.2-7138 during its 2013 outburst

Abstract:We report on an X-ray observation of the Be X-ray Binary Pulsar RX J0059.2-7138, performed by XMM-Newton in March 2014. The 19 ks long observation was carried out about three months after the discovery of the latest outburst from this Small Magellanic Cloud transient, when the source luminosity was Lx ~ 10$^{38}$ erg/s. A spin period of P=2.762383(5) s was derived, corresponding to an average spin-up of $\dot{P}_{\mathrm{spin}} = -(1.27\pm0.01)\times10^{-12}$ s $s^{-1}$ from the only previous period measurement, obtained more than 20 years earlier. The time-averaged continuum spectrum (0.2-12 keV) consisted of a hard power-law (photon index ~0.44) with an exponential cut-off at a phase-dependent energy (20-50 keV) plus a significant soft excess below about 0.5 keV. In addition, several features were observed in the spectrum: an emission line at 6.6 keV from highly ionized iron, a broad feature at 0.9-1 keV likely due to a blend of Fe L-shell lines, and narrow emission and absorption lines consistent with transitions in highly ionized oxygen, nitrogen and iron visible in the high resolution RGS data (0.4-2.1 keV). Given the different ionization stages of the narrow line components, indicative of photoionization from the luminous X-ray pulsar, we argue that the soft excess in RX J0059.2-7138 is produced by reprocessing of the pulsar emission in the inner regions of the accretion disc.

Contrasting behaviour from two Be/X-ray binary pulsars: insights into differing neutron star accretion modes

Abstract:In this paper we present the identification of two periodic X-ray signals coming from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). On detection with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), the 175.4s and 85.4s pulsations were considered to originate from new Be/X-ray binary (BeXRB) pulsars with unknown locations. Using rapid follow-up INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations, we show the first pulsar (designated SXP175) to be coincident with a candidate high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) in the northern bar region of the SMC undergoing a small Type II outburst. The orbital period (87d) and spectral class (B0-B0.5IIIe) of this system are determined and presented here for the first time. The second pulsar is shown not to be new at all, but is consistent with being SXP91.1 - a pulsar discovered at the very beginning of the 13 year long RXTE key monitoring programme of the SMC. Whilst it is theoretically possible for accreting neutron stars to change spin period so dramatically over such a short time, the X-ray and optical data available for this source suggest this spin-up is continuous during long phases of X-ray quiescence, where accretion driven spin-up of the neutron star should be minimal.

Long-term study of the Double Pulsar J0737-3039 with XMM-Newton: spectral analysis

Abstract:We present a long-term spectral monitoring of the unique Double Pulsar binary PSR J0737-3039 corresponding to two "Large Programs" performed by XMM-Newton in 2006 and 2011. Spectral variability of pulsar emission in soft X-rays is not evident over 5 years, despite the significant relativistic spin precession in the considered time span (about 25deg). We provide, for the first time, evidence of hard X-ray emission from the system in the 5-8 keV energy band. The standard spectral analysis was coupled to the energy dependent spatial analysis to confirm this excess, most likely ascribed to iron line emission. The Fe K-alpha emission line at 6.4-6.97 keV was previously unheard-of in non-accreting binary systems and could testify to the presence of a relic disk that survived the supernova explosions that terminated the lives of the Double Pulsar's stellar progenitors. The existence of a relic disk in this system reinforces speculation about the presence of similar structures around other peculiar classes of isolated neutron stars.

Abstract:IGR J19294+1816 is an accreting pulsar in high-mass X-ray binary thatwas discovered by Integral on 31st of March 2009 (ATel #1997). Further studies using Swift/XRT data have found pulsation period of 12.45s (ATel #1998; #2002) and that it falls within the region of pulse period vs. orbital period parameter space expected for a Be X-ray binary system(ATel #2008).

Abstract:We present detailed timing and spectral analyses of the transient X-ray pulsar RX J0209.6−7427 in the Small Magellanic Cloud during its 2019 giant outburst. With a better known distance than most galactic X-ray pulsars, its peak luminosity is determined to be (1.11 ± 0.06) × 1039 erg s−1; it is thus a bona fide pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX). Owing to the broad energy band of Insight-HXMT, its pulsed X-ray emission was detected from 1 keV up to the 130–180 keV band, which is the highest energy emission detected from any PULXs outside the Milky Way. This allows us to conclude that its main pulsed X-ray emission is from the fan beam of the accretion column, and its luminosity is thus intrinsic. We also estimate its magnetic field of (4.8–8.6) × 1012 or (1.7–2.2) × 1013 G, from its spin evolution or transition in the accretion column structure during the outburst; we suggest that the two values of the magnetic field strength correspond to the dipole and multipole magnetic fields of the neutron star, similar to the recent discovery in the Galactic PULX Swift J0243.6+6124. Therefore, the nature of the neutron star and its ULX emission can be understood within the current theoretical frame of accreting neutron stars. This may have implications for understanding the nature of those farther away extragalactic PULXs.

Abstract:XTE J1829-098 is a transient X-ray pulsar with a period of ~7.8 s. It is a candidate Be star system, although the evidence for this is not yet definitive. We investigated the twenty-year long X-ray light curve using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). We find that all three light curves are clearly modulated on the ~244 day orbital period previously reported from PCA monitoring observations, with outbursts confined to a narrow phase range. The light curves also show that XTE J1829-098 was in an inactive state between approximately December 2008 and April 2018 and no strong outbursts occurred. Such behavior is typical of Be X-ray binary systems, with the absence of outbursts likely related to the dissipation of the Be star's decretion disk. The mean outburst shapes can be approximated with a triangular profile and, from a joint fit of this to all three light curves, we refine the orbital period to 243.95 +/- 0.04 days. The mean outburst profile does not show any asymmetry and has a total phase duration of 0.140 +/- 0.007. However, the PCA light curve shows that there is considerable cycle-to-cycle variability of the individual outbursts. We compare the properties of XTE J1829-098 with other sources that show short phase-duration outbursts, in particular GS 1843-02 (2S 1845-024) which has a very similar orbital period, but longer pulse period, and whose orbit is known to be highly eccentric.

Abstract:Recently, there has been renewed interest in the Be X-ray binary (Be/XRB) because of its spatial coincidence with a variable gamma -ray source detected by To explore more thoroughly its properties, new X-ray observations were carried out in 2023 by and satellites, jointly covering the energy range from $0.2-79$ keV. was caught at an X-ray flux of $ $ erg cm$^ $ s$^ $. The X-ray spectrum fits well with an absorbed power law with a high energy cutoff. Other acceptable fits require an additional blackbody component ($kT_ bb 1.1$ keV) or a Gaussian in absorption gabs keV). We measured a spin period of $175.8127 and an spin period of $175.862 We show that all the available spin period measurements of spanning 29 years, are highly correlated with time, resulting in a remarkably stable spin-down of $ P $ s s$^ $. We find that if hosts an accretion-powered pulsar, accretion torque models indicate a surface magnetic field of $ $ G. The X-ray properties emerging from our analysis strenghten the hypothesis that belongs to the small group of persistent Be/XRBs. We also performed radio observations with the Parkes Murriyang telescope, to search for radio pulsations. However, no radio pulsations compatible with the rotational ephemeris of were detected. We rule out the hypothesis that is a gamma -ray binary where the emission is produced by interactions between the pulsar and the companion winds. Other models commonly used to account for the production of $ in accreting pulsars cannot reproduce the bright emission from We examined other possible mechanisms behind the $ emission and note that there is a $ 0.5$ chance probability that an unknown extragalactic active galactic nucleus (AGN) observed through the Galactic plane may coincidentally fall within the error circle of the source and be responsible for the $ emission.

Abstract:We report the results of eROSITA and NICER observations of the June 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0529.8-6556 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, along with the analysis of archival X-ray and optical data from this source. We find two anomalous features in the system's behavior. First, the pulse profile observed by NICER during maximum luminosity is similar to that observed by XMM-Newton in 2000, despite the fact that the X-ray luminosity was different by two orders of magnitude. By contrast, a modest decrease in luminosity in the 2020 observations generated a significant change in pulse profile. Second, we find that the historical optical outbursts are not strictly periodic, as would be expected if the outbursts were triggered by periastron passage, as is generally assumed. The optical peaks are also not coincident with the X-ray outbursts. We suggest that this behavior may result from a misalignment of the Be star disk and the orbital plane, which might cause changes in the timing of the passage of the neutron star through the disk as it precesses. We conclude that the orbital period of the source remains unclear.

Discovery of X-ray pulsations in the Be/X-ray binary IGR J21343+4738

Abstract:We report on the discovery of X-ray pulsations in the Be/X-ray binary IGR J21343+4738 during an XMM-Newton observation. We obtained a barycentric corrected pulse period of 320.35+-0.06 seconds. The pulse profile displays a peak at low energy that flattens at high energy. The pulse fraction is 45+-3$% and independent of energy within the statistical uncertainties. The 0.2-12 keV spectrum is well fit by a two component model consisting of a blackbody with kT=0.11+-0.01 keV and a power law with photon index Gamma=1.02+-0.07. Both components are affected by photoelectric absorption with a equivalent hydrogen column density NH=(1.08+-0.15)x 10^{22} cm^{-2} The observed unabsorbed flux is 1.4x10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.2-12 keV energy band. Despite the fact that the Be star's circumstellar disc has almost vanished, accretion continues to be the main source of high energy radiation. We argue that the observed X-ray luminosity (LX~10^{35} erg s^{-1}) may result from accretion via a low-velocity equatorial wind from the optical companion.

Discovery of X-ray Pulsations from the HMXB Source AXJ1749.1-2733

Abstract:We are reporting a discovery of X-ray pulsations from the source AX J1749.1-2733 with the period of ~132 s based on the XMM-Newton data obtained in March 2007. The observed pulse profile has a double-peaked structure with the pulse fraction of about 25-30 % in the 3-10 keV energy band. We have also found that a periodicity with practically the same period has been detected from the source by the IBIS telescope onboard the INTEGRAL observatory during an outburst on Sept. 9, 2003 in the 20-50 keV energy band. Due to the double-peaked pulse profile, there is an additional peak on both periodograms of nearly ~66 s, therefore we have also investigated the possibility that the last value is the true pulse period. The source spectrum obtained by the XMM-Newton observatory in the soft energy band is being heavily absorbed ($N_H\simeq2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) due to a strong intrinsic absorption in the binary system that leads to the conclusion that AX J1749.1-2733 is a new transient X-ray pulsar in the high mass X-ray binary system.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0440.9+4431 went through a giant outburst in December 2022 with a peak flux of $\sim$2.3 Crab in 15–50 keV. We studied the broad-band timing and spectral properties of RX J0440.9+4431 using four AstroSat observations, where the source transited between subcritical and supercritical accretion regimes. Pulsations were detected significantly above 100 keV. The pulse profiles were found to be highly luminosity- and energy-dependent. A significant evolution in the pulse profile shape near the peak of the outburst indicates a possible change in the accretion mode and beaming patterns of RX J0440.9+4431. The rms pulsed fraction was luminosity- and energy-dependent, with a concave-like feature around 20–30 keV. The depth of this feature varied with luminosity, indicating changes in the accretion column height and proportion of reflected photons. The broad-band continuum spectra were best fitted with a two-component Comptonization model with a blackbody component or a two-blackbody component model with a thermal Comptonization component. A quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at 60 mHz was detected at a luminosity of $2.6 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which evolved into 42 mHz at $1.5 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The QPO rms were found to be energy dependent with an overall increasing trend with energy. For the first time, we found the QPO frequency varying with photon energy in an X-ray pulsar, which poses a challenge in explaining the QPO with current models such as the Keplarian and beat frequency model. Hence, more physically motivated models are required to understand the physical mechanism behind the mHz QPOs.

XMM-Newton discovery of 2.6 s pulsations in the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1627-41

Abstract:After nearly a decade of quiescence, the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1627-41 reactivated on 2008 May 28 with a bursting episode followed by a slowly decaying enhancement of its persistent emission. To search for the still unknown spin period of this SGR taking advantage of its high flux state, we performed on 2008 September 27-28 a 120 ks long X-ray observation with the XMM-Newton satellite. Pulsations with P = 2.594578(6) s were detected at a higher than 6-sigma confidence level, with a double-peaked pulse profile. The pulsed fraction in the 2-12 keV range is 19% +/- 3% and 24% +/- 3% for the fundamental and the second harmonic, respectively. The observed 2-10 keV flux is 3.4E-13 erg/cm^2/s, still a factor of ~ 5 above the quiescent pre-burst-activation level, and the spectrum is well fitted by an absorbed power law plus blackbody model (photon index Gamma = 0.6, blackbody temperature kT = 0.5 keV, and absorption nH = 1.2E+23 cm^-2). We also detected a shell of diffuse soft X-ray emission which is likely associated with the young supernova remnant G337.0-0.1.

A Comprehensive Library of X-ray Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud: Time Evolution of their Luminosities and Spin Periods

Abstract:We have collected and analyzed the complete archive of {\itshape XMM-Newton\} (116), {\itshape Chandra\} (151), and {\itshape RXTE\} (952) observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), spanning 1997-2014. The resulting observational library provides a comprehensive view of the physical, temporal and statistical properties of the SMC pulsar population across the luminosity range of $L_X= 10^{31.2}$--$10^{38}$~erg~s$^{-1}$. From a sample of 67 pulsars we report $\sim$1654 individual pulsar detections, yielding $\sim$1260 pulse period measurements. Our pipeline generates a suite of products for each pulsar detection: spin period, flux, event list, high time-resolution light-curve, pulse-profile, periodogram, and spectrum. Combining all three satellites, we generated complete histories of the spin periods, pulse amplitudes, pulsed fractions and X-ray luminosities. Some pulsars show variations in pulse period due to the combination of orbital motion and accretion torques. Long-term spin-up/down trends are seen in 12/11 pulsars respectively, pointing to sustained transfer of mass and angular momentum to the neutron star on decadal timescales. Of the sample 30 pulsars have relatively very small spin period derivative and may be close to equilibrium spin. The distributions of pulse-detection and flux as functions of spin-period provide interesting findings: mapping boundaries of accretion-driven X-ray luminosity, and showing that fast pulsars ($P<$10 s) are rarely detected, which yet are more prone to giant outbursts. Accompanying this paper is an initial public release of the library so that it can be used by other researchers. We intend the library to be useful in driving improved models of neutron star magnetospheres and accretion physics.

4XMM~J182531.5$-$144036: A new persistent Be/X-ray binary found within the \emph{XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey

Abstract:We aim to investigate the nature of time-variable X-ray sources detected in the {\it XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey. The X-ray light curves of objects in the {\it XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey were searched for variability and coincident serendipitous sources observed by {\it Chandra} were also investigated. Subsequent infrared spectroscopy of the counterparts to the X-ray objects that were identified using UKIDSS was carried out using {\it ISAAC} on the VLT. We found that the object 4XMM~J182531.5--144036 detected in the {\it XMM-Newton} serendipitous survey in April 2008 was also detected by {\it Chandra} as CXOU~J182531.4--144036 in July 2004. Both observations reveal a hard X-ray source displaying a coherent X-ray pulsation at a period of 781~s. The source position is coincident with a $K=14$ mag infrared object whose spectrum exhibits strong HeI and Br$\gamma$ emission lines and an infrared excess above that of early B-type dwarf or giant stars. We conclude that 4XMM~J182531.5--144036 is a Be/X-ray binary pulsar exhibiting persistent X-ray emission and is likely in a long period, low eccentricity orbit, similar to X Per.

Abstract:We present results from our Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of two low-luminosity X-ray pulsators SAX J1324.4-6200 and SAX J1452.8-5949 which have spin-periods of 172 s and 437 s respectively. The XMM-Newton spectra for both sources can be fitted well with a simple power-law model of photon index ~ 1.0. A black-body model can equally well fit the spectra with a temperature of ~ 2 keV for both sources. During our XMM-Newton observations, SAX J1324.4-6200 is detected with coherent X-ray pulsations at a period of $172.86 \pm 0.02$ s while no pulsations with a pulse fraction greater than 15% (at 98% confidence level) are detected in SAX J1452.8--5949. The spin period of SAX J1324.4-6200 is found to be increasing on a time-scale of $\dot{P}$ = $(6.34 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-9}$ s s$^{-1}$ which would suggest that the accretor is a neutron star and not a white dwarf. Using sub-arcsec spatial resolution of the Chandra telescope, possible counterparts are seen for both sources in the near-infrared images obtained with the SOFI instrument on the New Technology Telescope. The X-ray and near-infrared properties of SAX J1324.4-6200 suggest it to be either a persistent high mass accreting X-ray pulsar or a symbiotic X-ray binary pulsar at a distance $\le$ 9 kpc. We identify the infrared counterpart of SAX J1452.8--5949 to be a late-type main sequence star at a distance $\le$ 10 kpc, thus ruling out SAX J1452.8--5949 to be a high mass X-ray binary. However with the present X-ray and near-infrared observations, we cannot make any further conclusive conclusion about the nature of SAX J1452.8-5949.
