Abstract:This is a survey article, with essentially complete proofs, of a series of recent results concerning the geometry of the characteristic foliation on smooth divisors in compact hyperkähler manifolds, starting with work by Hwang-Viehweg, but also covering articles by Amerik-Campana and Abugaliev. The restriction of the holomorphic symplectic form on a hyperkähler manifold $X$ to a smooth hypersurface $D\subset X$ leads to a regular foliation ${\mathcal F}\subset{\mathcal T}_D$ of rank one, the characteristic foliation. The picture is complete in dimension four and shows that the behavior of the leaves of ${\mathcal F}$ on $D$ is determined by the Beauville-Bogomolov square $q(D)$ of $D$. In higher dimensions, some of the results depend on the abundance conjecture for $D$.

Abstract:We relate Fubini's theorem for Euler characteristics to Riemann-Hurwtiz formulae, and reprove a classical result of Iversen. The techniques used include algebraic geometry, complex geometry, and model theory. Possible applications to the study of wild ramification in finite characteristic are discussed.

Abstract:Let F be a homeomorphism of an oriented surface M that is isotopic to the identity. Le Calvez proved that if F admits a lift without fixed points to the universal covering of M, then there exists a topological foliation of M transverse to the dynamics. We generalize this result to the case where the lift of F has fixed points. We obtain a singular topological foliation whose singularities are fixed points of F. Le Calvez a montré que si F est un homéomorphisme isotope à l'identité d'une surface M admettant un relèvement au revêtement universel n'ayant pas de points fixes, alors il existe un feuilletage topologique de M transverse à la dynamique. Nous montrons que ce résultat se généralise au cas où le relèvement de F admet des points fixes. Nous obtenons alors un feuilletage topologique singulier transverse à la dynamique dont les singularités sont un ensemble fermé de points fixes de F.

The Poincaré Problem for a foliated surface

Abstract:Let $\mathcal F$ be a foliation on a smooth projective surface $S$ over the complex number $\mathbb{C}$. We introduce three birational non-negative invariants $c_1^2(\mathcal F)$, $c_2(\mathcal F)$ and $\chi(\mathcal F)$, called the Chern numbers. If the foliation $\mathcal F$ is not of general type, the first Chern number $c_1^2(\mathcal F)=0$, and $c_2(\mathcal F)=\chi(\mathcal F)=0$ except when $\mathcal F$ is induced by a non-isotrivial fibration of genus $g=1$. If $\mathcal F$ is of general type, we obtain a slope inequality when $\mathcal F$ is algebraically integral. As a corollary, $\mathcal F$ is always transcendental if the slope is less than $2$. On the other hand, we also prove three sharp Noether type inequalities if $\mathcal F$ is of general type. As applications, we obtain a criterion for foliations to be transcendental using Noether type inequalities, and we also give a partial positive answer to the question on the lower bound on the volume of a foliation of general type.

Abstract:Nous calculons le groupe de Picard de l'espace des modules $\Theta_{\planp}(d)$ des th\^eta-caract\'eristiques des courbes planes (non forc\'ement lisses) de degr\'e $d$. Nous montrons que pour $d\ge 6$, le groupe de Picard de la composante paire est engendr\'e par le fibr\'e d\'eterminant ${\cal{D}}$ et l'image r\'eciproque ${\cal{L}}$, sous le morphisme support sch\'ematique, de ${\cal{O}}_{\proj}(1)$ o\`u $\proj$ est l'espace des courbes de degr\'e $d$ sur $\planp$. Pour $1\le d \le 4$, ce groupe est engendr\'e uniquement par ${\cal{L}}$, le fibr\'e d\'eterminant \'etant trivial dans ces cas. Dans le groupe $\Cl$ des diviseurs de Weil, le fibr\'e d\'eterminant admet une racine: le fibr\'e pfaffien ${\cal{P}}$. De plus, pour $d\geq 4$ pair, ${\cal{L}}$ aussi admet une racine dans $\Cl$. Si $d=5$, le fibr\'e pfaffien s'\'etend en un fibr\'e inversible et le groupe de Picard est engendr\'e par ${\cal{L}}$ et ${\cal{P}}$. On verra ainsi que la composante paire de $\Theta_{\planp}(d)$ est localement factoriel si et seulement si $d=1,2,3$ ou $d=5$. On obtient un r\'esultat analogue pour la composante impaire. Ensuite, nous \'etudions la question d'existence d'une famille universelle sur un ouvert de l'ouvert $U$ des th\^eta-caract\'eristiques dont le faisceau sous-jacent est stable. Nous montrons que pour $d$ pair une telle famille ne peut exister, tandis que pour $d$ impair une telle famille existe, pas sur $U$ entier, mais localement dans la topologie de Zariski.

Abstract:In the present paper, we revisit a famous theorem by Candel that we generalize by proving that given a compact lamination by hyperbolic surfaces, every negative function smooth inside the leaves and transversally continuous is the curvature function of a unique laminated metric in the corresponding conformal class. We give an interpretation of this result as a continuity result about the solutions of some elliptic PDEs in the so called Cheeger-Gromov topology on the space of complete pointed riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:Les feuilletages de Hirsch sont des feuilletages par surfaces de variétés compactes fermées de dimension 3, dont la dynamique transverse est celle d'un endomorphisme du cercle de degré strictement supérieur à 1. Le but de cette note est de construire, à partir d'une g-mesure associée à un tel endomorphisme, une mesure harmonique sur le feuilletage de Hirsch correspondant, au sens de Lucy Garnett. Ceci nous permet de donner des exemples de métriques riemanniennes sur le fibré tangent du feuilletage de Hirsch, lisses le long des feuilles et continues transversalement, pour lesquelles il existe plusieurs mesures harmoniques. De tels exemples montrent que le résultat d'unique ergodicité obtenu par le premier auteur et Victor Kleptsyn pour les feuilletages transversalement conformes [GAFA, 2007, Vol. 17, No 4, 1043-1105] n'est valable que lorsque la métrique riemannienne est Höldérienne transversalement, mais pas juste continue.

Abstract:A contact distribution on projective three-space is defined by the 1-form $x_2dx_1-x_1dx_2+x_4dx_3-x_3dx_4$, up to a change of projective coordinates. The family of contact distributions is parameterized by the complement of the Pfaff-Plücker quadric in the projective 5-space of antisymmetric $4\times4$ matrices. A foliation of dimension 1 and degree $d$ is specified by a polynomial vector field $\sum{}p_i\partial_{x_i}, p_i$ homogeneous of degree $d$. The foliation is called Legendrian if tangent to some distribution of contact. Our goal is to give formulas for the dimensions and degrees of the varieties of Legendrian foliations, and of the varieties of foliations tangent to a pencil of planes.

On the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics

Abstract:Using Fourier-Mukai transformations, we prove some results about the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics. This ring was determined by Atiyah in characteristic zero, who showed that it is a polynomial ring in one variable. It turns out that the situation in characteristic p>0 is completely different and rather bizarre: the ring is nonnoetherian and contains a subring whose spectrum contains infinitely many copies of Spec(Z), which are glued with successively higher and higher infinitesimal identification at the point corresponding to the prime p.

Abstract:Let be a smooth Riemann surface foliation on , where M is a complex manifold and the singular set is an analytic set of codimension at least two. Fix a hermitian metric on M and assume that all leaves of are hyperbolic. Verjovsky's modulus of uniformization is a positive real function defined on defined in terms of the family of holomorphic maps from the unit disc into the leaves of and is a measure of the largest possible derivative in the class of such maps. Various conditions are known that guarantee the continuity of on . The main question that is addressed here is its continuity at points of E . To do this, we adapt Whitney's -tangent cone construction for analytic sets to the setting of foliations and use it to define the tangent cone of at points of E . This leads to the definition of a foliation that is of transversal type at points of E . It is shown that the map associated to such foliations is continuous at E provided that it is continuous on and is of transversal type. We also present observations on the locus of discontinuity of . Finally, for a domain , we consider , the restriction of to U and the corresponding positive function . Using the transversality hypothesis leads to strengthened versions of the results of Lins Neto–Martins on the variation .

Ergodic theorems for laminations and foliations: recent results and perspectives

Abstract:This report discusses recent results as well as new perspectives in the ergodic theory for Riemann surface laminations, with an emphasis on singular holomorphic foliations by curves. The central notions of these developments are leafwise Poincaré metric, directed positive harmonic currents, multiplicative cocycles and Lyapunov exponents. We deal with various ergodic theorems for such laminations: Random and Operator Ergodic Theorems, (Geometric) Birkhoff Ergodic Theorems, Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem and Unique Ergodicity Theorems. Applications of these theorems are also given. In particular, we define and study the canonical Lyapunov exponents for a large family of singular holomorphic foliations on compact projective surfaces. Topological and algebro-geometric interpretations of these characteristic numbers are also treated. These results highlight the strong similarity as well as the fundamental differences between the ergodic theory of maps and that of Riemann surface laminations. Most of the results reported here are known. However, sufficient conditions for abstract heat diffusions to coincide with the leafwise heat diffusions (Subsection 5.2) are new ones.

Abstract:A holomorphic pre-foliation $\mathscr{F}=\ell\boxtimes\mathcal{F}$ of co-degree $1$ and degree $d$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ is the data of a line $\ell$ of $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and a holomorphic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $\mathbb{P }^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ of degree $d-1.$ We study pre-foliations of co-degree $1$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{ C}}$ with a flat Legendre transform (dual web). After having established some general results on the flatness of the dual $d$-web of a homogeneous pre-foliation of co-degree $1$ and degree $d$, we describe some explicit examples and we show that up to automorphism of $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ there are two families and six examples of homogeneous pre-foliations of co-degree $1$ and degree $3$ on $\mathbb {P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ with a flat dual web. This allows us to prove an analogue for pre-foliations of co-degree $1$ and degree~$3$ of a result, obtained in collaboration with D. Mar\'ın, on foliations of degree $3$ with non-degenerate singularities and a flat Legendre transform. We also show that the dual web of a reduced convex pre-foliation of co-degree $1$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ is flat. This is an analogue of a result on foliations of $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ due to D. Mar\'ın and J. V. Pereira.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a holomorphic foliation at $p\in\mathbb{C}^2$, and $B$ be a separatrix of $\mathcal{F}$. We prove the following Dimca-Greuel type inequality $3\mu_p(\mathcal{F},B)-4\tau_p(\mathcal{F},B)+GSV_p(\mathcal{F},B)\leq 0$, where $\mu_p(\mathcal{F},B)$ is the multiplicity of $\mathcal{F}$ along $B$, $\tau_p(\mathcal{F},B)$ is the dimension of the quotient of $\mathbb{C}\{x,y\}$ by the ideal generated by the components of any $1$-form defining $\mathcal{F}$ and any equation of $B$, and $GSV_p(\mathcal{F},B)$ is the \textit{Gómez-Mont-Seade-Verjovsky index} of the foliation $\mathcal{F}$ with respect to $B$. As a consequence, we provide a new proof of the $\frac{4}{3}$-Dimca-Greuel conjecture for singularities of irreducible plane curve germs, with foliations ingredients, that differs from those given by Alberich-Carramiñana, Almirón, Blanco, Melle-Hernández and Genzmer-Hernandes, but it is in line with the idea developed by Wang.

Abstract:A holomorphic pre-foliation $\mathscr{F}=\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{F}$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ is the data of a reduced complex projective curve $\mathcal{C}$ of $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and a holomorphic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$. When the foliation $\mathcal{F}$ is convex (resp. reduced convex) and the curve $\mathcal{C}$ is invariant by $\mathcal{F}$, we say that the pre-foliation $\mathscr{F}=\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{F}$ is convex (resp. reduced convex). We prove that the dual web of a reduced convex pre-foliation on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ is flat. This generalizes our previous result obtained in the case where the associated curve consists only of invariant lines.

Abstract:We prove the Harder-Siegel formula for the Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{A}_g$ via the intersection theory of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_g$ and a vanishing result for lambda classes on the boundary of the toroidal compactifications of $\mathcal{A}_g$, recently proven by Canning, Molcho, Oprea and Pandharipande.

Abstract:Given a perverse sheaf on the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties or the moduli stack of smooth curves with n marked points over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that the (orbifold) Euler characteristic is nonnegative. For constant coefficients, this follows immediately from formulas of Harer-Zagier and Harder. Our proof is different and in the case of abelian varieties uses log Dubson-Kashiwara plus the fact that Hodge bundles are nef. For curves, we require an additional inequality established using Beilinson's gluing construction. The first main result is shown to be false in positive characteristic.
