Abstract:In higher Landau levels ($N>1$), the ground state of the two-dimensional electron gas in a strong perpendicular magnetic field evolves from a Wigner crystal for small filling $\nu $ of the partially filled Landau level, into a succession of bubble states with increasing number of guiding centers per bubble as $\nu $ increases, to a modulated stripe state near $\nu =0.5$. In this work, we compute the frequency-dependent longitudinal conductivity $% \sigma_{xx}(\omega) $ of the Wigner and bubble crystal states in the presence of disorder. We apply an elastic theory to the crystal states which is characterized by a shear and a bulk modulus. We obtain both moduli from the microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation. We then use the replica and Gaussian variational methods to handle the effects of disorder. Within the semiclassical approximation we get the dynamical conductivity as well as the pinning frequency as functions of the Landau level filling factor and compare our results with recent microwave experiments.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to study the conductivity and pinning frequency of two - dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in high Landau levels ($N > 1$) under a strong vertical magnetic field. Specifically, the author focuses on the following issues: 1. **Longitudinal conductivity of Wigner crystals and bubble crystals**: - The researchers calculated the frequency - dependent longitudinal conductivity $\sigma_{xx}(\omega)$ in the states of Wigner crystals and bubble crystals under disordered conditions. 2. **Application of elastic theory**: - By applying elastic theory to describe these crystal states, and calculate the shear modulus and bulk modulus. 3. **Treatment of disorder effects**: - Use the replica method and the Gaussian variational method (GVM) to deal with disorder effects, especially in the semi - classical approximation, and obtain the dynamic conductivity and pinning frequency as a function of the Landau level filling factor. 4. **Comparison of experimental results**: - Compare the calculated results with the recent microwave experimental data to verify the validity of the theoretical model. ### Background of the paper In a strong quantizing magnetic field, two - dimensional electron gas will form Wigner crystals at low filling factors. As the filling factor increases, the system will experience a series of phase transitions, including the transition from Wigner crystals to bubble crystals, and then to modulated stripe states. Microwave absorption experiments have revealed resonance phenomena in a specific filling factor range, and these resonances are interpreted as the existence of different crystal phases. ### Main research contents - **Elastic model of bubble crystals**: Constructed an elastic model describing pure bubble crystals and extracted the dynamic matrix from it. - **Replica and Gaussian variational methods**: Use the replica method and GVM to deal with disorder effects, and calculate the conductivity and pinning frequency with and without disorder conditions. - **Numerical results and experimental comparison**: Presented the numerical results and made a detailed comparison with the experimental data, especially regarding the issue of resonance width. ### Formula summary - **Conductivity formula**: \[ \sigma_{\alpha\beta}(\omega)=-\frac{M^2 e^2}{v_c i \omega} G_{\alpha\beta}^{ret}(k = 0,\omega) \] - **Magnetophonon dispersion relation**: \[ \omega=\frac{\ell^2}{\hbar M}\sqrt{\det[\hat{D}(k)]} \] - **Dynamic matrix**: \[ \hat{D}_{classical}(k)=\frac{2\pi n_s e^2}{\kappa}\sum_K\left[\frac{|h(k + K)|^2}{|k + K|}(k + K)(k + K)-\frac{|h(K)|^2}{|K|}K K\right] \] Through these studies, the author hopes to better understand the complex behavior of two - dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field and its consistency with experimental observations.
