Abstract:We propose a two dimensional frame-invariant phase field model of grain impingement and coarsening. One dimensional analytical solutions for a stable grain boundary in a bicrystal are obtained, and equilibrium energies are computed. We are able to calculate the rotation rate for a free grain between two grains of fixed orientation. For a particular choice of functional dependencies in the model the grain boundary energy takes the same analytic form as the microscopic (dislocation) model of Read and Shockley.

Abstract:The Warren-Kobayashi-Lobkovsky-Carter (WKLC) coupled phase and orientation field model, originally developed for polycrystalline materials solidification, is extended for the simulation of grain evolution in metal additive manufacturing. Firstly, a moving heat source is incorporated to the model for generating a transient melt pool. Additionally, the relaxation time of the orientation field evolution is drastically increased below melting point through a temperature-dependent exponential term, which prevents grain coarsening after solidification. These adjustments allow qualitative simulation of columnar grains across various melting conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, a new methodology is presented to inlude anisotropic grain boundary properties in a phase-field model, The new approach is thermodynamically consistent and gives accurate control of the inclination and misorientation of grain boundary properties. It is verified that accurate triple junction angles are obtained without ad-hoc correction terms and under all conditions, including triple junction angles reaching the extreme values 0° and 180°. Grain boundary wetting is also reproduced. The new model allows us to consider polycrystalline microstructures with very complex grain boundary properties. Simulations show that grain boundary anisotropy may lead to a huge range of effects on the grain structure.

Abstract:Using the advantage of phase field crystal model in microstructure evolution, we simulated the details of two-dimensional triangular phase on atomic scale and diffusion time scale. The results show that the annihilation process of grain boundaries can be divided into three stages. The energy changes of the system at different stages are accurately calculated and the process is quantitatively analyzed. By comparing the atomic density distributions at different temperatures and orientation angles, it is shown that the grain boundary is sensitive to temperature. Within the range of low-angle, the increase of orientation angle inhibits the occurrence of annihilation and decreases the grain boundary migration rate. Under the applied stress, the orientation angle has a certain response relationship with the yield strength of the material. This work has some practical significance in the influence of microstructure on the mechanical properties of materials.

Abstract:The major numerical schemes of applying strain during phase field crystal plastic deformation simulation are introduced briefly,including varvolumetric method and isovolumetric method.The basic principles,solution methods and characterization of these two kinds of numerical schemes are reviewed.The research progress of plastic deformation simulation based on phase field crystal model are summarized at home and aboard,including the plastic deformation mechanism of bicrystalline and nanopolycrystalline materials in two-dimensions and the simulation of the reverse Hall-Petch effect.Finally the future research directions of the phase field crystal model in simulating plastic deformation are pointed out as well.
Phase-field Crystal Study of Topological Evolution During Grain Annihilation Process in Polycrystalline Materials

Abstract:The topological evolution and annihilation mechanism of the three-, four- and five-sided grains are studied by using the phase field crystal (PFC) model. Both the large-angle and small-angle grain boundaries are discussed during the grain annihilation process. The results show that for the large-angle grain boundaries, grain annihilation is achieved through grain boundaries migration and absorption by triple junction. For the small-angle grain boundaries, the grain annihilation is achieved by dislocation slip, reaction, and absorption by triple junction. However, when the number of sides of a grain increases to seven, the grains show obvious growth instead of annihilation. Two kinds of growth mechanisms for the seven-sided grain are obtained by simulating the growth process. The effects of the number of grain sides on the evolution of grain annihilation are explored. These results are consistent with the Von Neumann-Mullins model and Euler formula.

Abstract:This paper develops a new phase-field model for equiaxed dendrite growth of multiple grains in multicomponent alloys based on the Ginzberg-Landau theory and phase-field model of a single grain. Taking Al-Cu and Al-Cu-Mg alloys for example, it couples the concentration field and simulates the dendrite growth process of multiple grains during isothermal solidification. the result of the simulation shows dendrite competitive growth of multiple grains, and is reapplied to the process of dendrite growth in practical solidification.

Abstract:Abstract A three-dimensional phase-field model is developed to simulate grain evolutions during powder-bed-fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing, while the physically-informed temperature profile is implemented from a thermal-fluid flow model. The phase-field model incorporates a nucleation model based on classical nucleation theory, as well as the initial grain structures of powder particles and substrate. The grain evolutions during the three-layer three-track PBF process are comprehensively reproduced, including grain nucleation and growth in molten pools, epitaxial growth from powder particles, substrate and previous tracks, grain re-melting and re-growth in overlapping zones, and grain coarsening in heat-affected zones. A validation experiment has been carried out, showing that the simulation results are consistent with the experimental results in the molten pool and grain morphologies. Furthermore, the grain refinement by adding nanoparticles is preliminarily reproduced and compared against the experimental result in literature.

Abstract:A continuum density field formulation with particle-scale resolution is constructed to simultaneously incorporate the orientation dependence of interparticle interactions and the rotational invariance of the system, a fundamental but challenging issue in modeling the structure and dynamics of a broad range of material systems across variable scales. This generalized phase field crystal-type approach is based upon the complete expansion of particle direct correlation functions and the concept of isotropic tensors. Through applications to the modeling of various two- and three-dimensional crystalline structures, our study demonstrates the capability of bond-angle control in this continuum field theory and its effects on the emergence of ordered phases, and provides a systematic way of performing tunable angle analyses for crystalline micro structures.

Abstract:With the ability to model the pattern formation for solidification, a phase field model has been studied by many scientists. The phase field method has successfully been applied to predict microstructure evolution in metallic alloys such as dendritic solidification. Currently available models, however, are restricted to single grain. A new phase-field model for dendrite growth of multiple grains in multicomponent alloys is developed based on the Ginzberg-Landau theory and phase-field model of single grain. Taking Al-Cu-Mg alloys for example, coupled the concentration field, simulated the dendritic growth process of multiple grains during isothermal solidification. The result of simulation showed dendritic competitive growth of multiple grains; the regions between the secondary arms and grains have the highest concentration and reappeared the process of dendrite growth in practical solidification.

Abstract:A new algorithm of phase field model is developed to simulate polycrystalline dendritic solidification growth in undercooled melts. The algorithm adopts a single phase field order parameter model incorporated with the anisotropy of solid-liquid interfacial energy and mobility. The model validation is performed by comparing the simulations with the theory analytical results and experimental information for both single and multi-grain dendritic growth, which demonstrates the quantitative capabilities of the proposed algorithm.
Phase-field modeling of ductile fracture across grain boundaries in polycrystals

Abstract:In this study, we address damage initiation and micro-crack formation in ductile failure of polycrystalline metals. We show how our recently published thermodynamic framework for ductile phase-field fracture of single crystals can be extended to polycyrstalline structures. A key feature of this framework is that is accounts for size effects by adopting gradient-enhanced (crystal) plasticity. Gradient-enhanced plasticity requires the definition of boundary conditions representing the plastic slip transmission resistance of the boundaries. In this work, we propose a novel type of micro-flexible boundary condition for gradient-plasticity, which couples the slip transmission resistance with the phase-field damage such that the resistance locally changes during the fracturing process. The formulation permits to maintain the effect of grain boundaries as obstacles for plastic slip during plastification, while also accounting for weakening of their resistance during the softening phase. In numerical experiments, the new damage-dependent boundary condition is compared to classical micro-free and micro-hard boundary conditions in polycrystals and it is demonstrated that it indeed produces a response that transitions from micro-hard to micro-free as the material fails. We show that the formulation maintains resistance to slip transmission during hardening, but can generate micro-cracks across grain boundaries during the fracture process. We further show examples of how the model can be used to simulate void coalescence and three-dimensional crack fronts in polycrystals.

Abstract:During thermo-mechanical processing, the strain energy stored in the microstucture of an FCC polycrystalline aggregate is generally reduced by physical phenomena controlled, at least partially, by mechanisms involving dislocation cell or grain boundary motion such as recovery, recrystallisation and grain growth. This work presents a novel coupled phase field-single crystal constitutive framework capable of describing the microstructural evolution driven by grain boundary curvature and/or stored energy during recrystallisation and grain growth. Thus, the minimisation of stored and grain boundary energies provides the driving force for grain boundary motion. To describe interface motion, a phase field model taking into account the stored energy distribution is formulated and implemented within a continuum mechanics framework. The single crystal constitutive behaviour is described using a dislocation mechanics-based crystallographic formulation. The coupling between the grain boundary kinematics and the crystal plasticity formulation is made through the dislocation densities and the grain orientations. Furthermore, the free energy parameters are calibrated from existing Read–Shockley boundary energy data and those describing grain boundary mobilities from published experimental data.

Abstract:We address a three-dimensional, coarse-grained description of dislocation networks at grain boundaries between rotated crystals. The so-called amplitude expansion of the phase-field crystal model is exploited with the aid of finite element method calculations. This approach allows for the description of microscopic features, such as dislocations, while simultaneously being able to describe length scales that are orders of magnitude larger than the lattice spacing. Moreover, it allows for the direct description of extended defects by means of a scalar order parameter. The versatility of this framework is shown by considering both fcc and bcc lattice symmetries and different rotation axes. First, the specific case of planar, twist grain boundaries is illustrated. The details of the method are reported and the consistency of the results with literature is discussed. Then, the dislocation networks forming at the interface between a spherical, rotated crystal embedded in an unrotated crystalline structure, are shown. Although explicitly accounting for dislocations which lead to an anisotropic shrinkage of the rotated grain, the extension of the spherical grain boundary is found to decrease linearly over time in agreement with the classical theory of grain growth and recent atomistic investigations. It is shown that the results obtained for a system with bcc symmetry agree very well with existing results, validating the methodology. Furthermore, fully original results are shown for fcc lattice symmetry, revealing the generality of the reported observations.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a quaternion formulation for the orientation variable in the three-dimensional Kobayashi–Warren model for the dynamics of polycrystals. We obtain existence of solutions to the -gradient descent flow of the constrained energy functional via several approximating problems. In particular, we use a Ginzburg–Landau-type approach and some extra regularizations. Existence of solutions to the approximating problems is shown by the use of nonlinear semigroups. Coupled with good a priori estimates, this leads to successive passages to the limit up to finally showing existence of solutions to the proposed model. Moreover, we also obtain an invariance principle for the orientation variable.

Abstract:We present a phase-field model to simulate the microstructure evolution occurring in polycrystalline materials with a variation in the intra-granular dislocation density. The model accounts for two mechanisms that lead to the grain boundary migration: the driving force due to capillarity and that due to the stored energy arising from a spatially varying dislocation density. In addition to the order parameters that distinguish regions occupied by different grains, we introduce dislocation density fields that describe spatial variation of the dislocation density. We assume that the dislocation density decays as a function of the distance the grain boundary has migrated. To demonstrate and parameterize the model, we simulate microstructure evolution in two dimensions, for which the initial microstructure is based on real-time experimental data. Additionally, we applied the model to study the effect of a cyclic heat treatment on the microstructure evolution. Specifically, we simulated stored-energy-driven grain growth during three thermal cycles, as well as grain growth without stored energy that serves as a baseline for comparison. We showed that the microstructure evolution proceeded much faster when the stored energy was considered. A non-self-similar evolution was observed in this case, while a nearly self-similar evolution was found when the microstructure evolution is driven solely by capillarity. These results suggest a possible mechanism for the initiation of abnormal grain growth during cyclic heat treatment. Finally, we demonstrate an integrated experimental-computational workflow that utilizes the experimental measurements to inform the phase-field model and its parameterization, which provides a foundation for the development of future simulation tools capable of quantitative prediction of microstructure evolution during non-isothermal heat treatment.

Abstract:The phase-field-crystal (PFC) method is used to investigate migration of grain boundary dislocation and dynamic of strain-driven nucleation and growth of deformed grain in two dimensions. The simulated results show that the deformed grain nucleates through forming a gap with higher strain energy between the two sub-grain boundaries (SGB) which is split from grain boundary (GB) under applied biaxial strain, and results in the formation of high-density ensembles of cooperative dislocation movement (CDM) that is capable of plastic flow localization (deformed band), which is related to the change of the crystal lattice orientation due to instability of the orientation. The deformed grain stores the strain energy through collective climbing of the dislocation, as well as changing the orientation of the original grain. The deformed grain growth (DGG) is such that the higher strain energy region extends to the lower strain energy region, and its area increase is proportional to the time square. The rule of the time square of the DGG can also be deduced by establishing the dynamic equation of the dislocation of the strain-driven SGB. The copper metal is taken as an example of the calculation, and the obtained result is a good agreement with that of the experiment.

Abstract:SummaryPhase‐field modeling, which introduces the regularized representation of sharp crack topologies, provides a convenient strategy for tackling 3D fracture problems. In this work, an adaptive isogeometric‐meshfree approach is developed for the phase‐field modeling of brittle fracture in a 3D polycrystalline material. The isogeometric‐meshfree approach uses moving least‐squares approximations to construct the equivalence between isogeometric basis functions and meshfree shape functions, thus inheriting the flexible local mesh refinement scheme from a meshfree method. This refinement scheme is improved by introducing an error estimator that includes both the phase field and its gradient. With the present approach, numerical implementations of the adaptive phase‐field modeling that introduces the anisotropy of fracture resistance in polycrystals are proposed. In this way, propagating cracks can be dynamically tracked, and the mesh near cracks is refined in a meshfree manner without requiring a priori knowledge of crack paths. Furthermore, the intergranular and transgranular crack propagation patterns in polycrystalline materials can be simulated by the present approach. A series of numerical examples that deal with the isotropic and anisotropic fracture are investigated to demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Due to its ability to simulate complex microstructure evolution, the phase-field modeling has been extensively developed to investigate brittle fracture in recent years. However, low computational efficiency still imposes substantial difficulties in the development of phase-field models. In this work, we develop a novel adaptive phase-field approach based on the isogeometric meshfree collocation method (IMCM) to simulate the crack propagation in 2D and 3D polycrystalline materials. The concept of IMCM is based upon the correspondence between the isogeometric collocation and reproducing kernel meshfree method to facilitate a robust mesh adaptivity in isogeometric collocation. The strong form collocation formulation further enhances the computational efficiency of phase-field modeling by reducing the number of point evaluations. The present numerical framework is utilized for the adaptive phase-field modeling which introduces the anisotropy of fracture resistance for each grain in polycrystals. Furthermore, the discrete displacement and phase-field equations are generalized to enable the calculation of both second- and fourth-order gradients, which are required to solve the phase-field models using IMCM. The smoothness and higher-order continuity of IMCM enable the fourth-order phase-field equation to be solved directly without splitting it into two second-order differential equations. The fourth-order model can capture the crack surface accurately with fewer nodes than the second-order model. Several numerical examples of isotropic and anisotropic brittle fracture in polycrystalline materials are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach.
