Abstract:This text surveys different probabilistic aspects of a model which is used to describe the evolution of an object that falls apart randomly as time passes. Each point of view yields useful techniques to establish properties of such random fragmentation processes.

Abstract:We define a fragmentation process which involves rectangles breaking up into progressively smaller pieces at rates that depend on their shape. Long, thin rectangles are more likely to break quickly, whereas squares break more slowly. Each rectangle is also more likely to split along its longest side. We are interested in how the system evolves over time: how many fragments are there of different shapes and sizes, and how did they reach that state? Using a standard transformation this fragmentation process with shape-dependent rates is equivalent to a two-dimensional branching random walk in continuous time in which the branching rate and the direction of each jump depend on the particles' position. Our main theorem gives an almost sure growth rate along paths for the number of particles in the branching random walk, which in turn gives the number of fragments with a fixed shape as the solution to an optimisation problem. This is a result of interest in the context of spatial branching systems and provides an example of a multitype branching process with a continuum of types.

Abstract:We analyze the fragmentation behavior of random clusters on the lattice under a process where bonds between neighboring sites are successively broken. Modeling such structures by configurations of a generalized Potts or random-cluster model allows us to discuss a wide range of systems with fractal properties including trees as well as dense clusters. We present exact results for the densities of fragmenting edges and the distribution of fragment sizes for critical clusters in two dimensions. Dynamical fragmentation with a size cutoff leads to broad distributions of fragment sizes. The resulting power laws are shown to encode characteristic fingerprints of the fragmented objects.

Universal behavior in fragmenting brittle, isotropic solids across material properties

Abstract:A bonded particle model is used to explore how variations in the material properties of brittle, isotropic solids affect critical behavior in fragmentation. To control material properties, a model is proposed which includes breakable two- and three-body particle interactions to calibrate elastic moduli and mode I and mode II fracture toughnesses. In the quasistatic limit, fragmentation leads to a power-law distribution of grain sizes which is truncated at a maximum grain mass that grows as a nontrivial power of system size. In the high-rate limit, truncation occurs at a mass that decreases as a power of increasing rate. A scaling description is used to characterize this behavior by collapsing the mean-square grain mass across rates and system sizes. Consistent scaling persists across all material properties studied, although there are differences in the evolution of grain size distributions with strain as the initial number of grains at fracture and their subsequent rate of production depend on Poisson's ratio. This evolving granular structure is found to induce a unique rheology where the ratio of the shear stress to pressure, an internal friction coefficient, decays approximately as the logarithm of increasing strain rate. The stress ratio also decreases at all rates with increasing strain as fragmentation progresses and depends on elastic properties of the solid.

Abstract:Processes of coalescence and fragmentation are used to understand the time-evolution of the mass distribution of various systems and may result in a steady state or in stable deterministic or stochastic cycles. Motivated by applications in insurgency warfare we investigate coalescence-fragmentation systems. We begin with a simple model of size-biased coalescence accompanied by shattering into monomers. Depending on the parameters this model has an approximately power-law-distributed steady state or stochastic cycles of alternating gelation and shattering. We conduct stochastic simulations of this model and its generalizations to include different kernel types, accretion and erosion, and various distributions of non-shattering fragmentation. Our central aim is to explore the robustness of the steady state and gel-shatter stochastic cycles to these variations. We show that an approximate power-law steady state persists with the addition of accretion and erosion, and with partial rather than total shattering. However, broader distributions of fragment sizes typically vitiate both the power law steady state and gel-shatter cyclicity. This work clarifies features shown in coalescence/fragmentation model simulations and elucidates the relationship between the microscopic dynamics and observed phenomena in this widely applicable interdisciplinary model type.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a strong law of large numbers and its L^1-convergence counterpart for the process counted with a random characteristic in the context of self-similar fragmentation processes. This result extends a somewhat analogical result by Nerman for general branching processes to fragmentation processes. In addition, we apply the general result of this paper to a specific example that in particular extends a limit theorem, concerning the fragmentation energy, by Bertoin and Martínez from L^1-convergence to almost sure convergence. Our approach treats fragmentation processes with an infinite dislocation measure directly, without using a discretisation method. Moreover, we obtain a result regarding the asymptotic behaviour of the empirical mean associated with some stopped fragmentation process.

Abstract:Cohesive powders form agglomerates that can be very porous. Hence they are also very fragile. Consider a process of complete fragmentation on a characteristic length scale $\ell$, where the fragments are subsequently allowed to settle under gravity. If this fragmentation-reagglomeration cycle is repeated sufficiently often, the powder develops a fractal substructure with robust statistical properties. The structural evolution is discussed for two different models: The first one is an off-lattice model, in which a fragment does not stick to the surface of other fragments that have already settled, but rolls down until it finds a locally stable position. The second one is a simpler lattice model, in which a fragment sticks at first contact with the agglomerate of fragments that have already settled. Results for the fragment size distribution are shown as well. One can distinguish scale invariant dust and fragments of a characteristic size. Their role in the process of structure formation will be addressed.

A New Method for Studying the Evolution of Particle Breakage

Abstract:This paper proposes a simple method for studying the evolution of particle breakage. A two-parameter statistical model is first proposed to describe the distribution of new particles generated from breakage of an initially uniformly graded sample. A Markov chain model is then proposed to describe the particle size evolution of non-uniformly graded samples. The two-parameter statistical model is shown to be able to capture different breakage patterns such as asperity breakage and particle splitting observed during breakage of uniformly graded samples. In the Markov chain model, it is shown that the concept of ‘effective breakage probability’, proposed to define the relative breakage extent of the whole sample, is comparable to a well-established breakage index in the literature. Both models are successfully validated against experimental data, where the characteristics of the model parameters and the engineering implications are discussed.

Abstract:Tree structures are ubiquitous in data across many domains, and many datasets are naturally modelled by unobserved tree structures. In this paper, first we review the theory of random fragmentation processes [Bertoin, 2006], and a number of existing methods for modelling trees, including the popular nested Chinese restaurant process (nCRP). Then we define a general class of probability distributions over trees: the Dirichlet fragmentation process (DFP) through a novel combination of the theory of Dirichlet processes and random fragmentation processes. This DFP presents a stick-breaking construction, and relates to the nCRP in the same way the Dirichlet process relates to the Chinese restaurant process. Furthermore, we develop a novel hierarchical mixture model with the DFP, and empirically compare the new model to similar models in machine learning. Experiments show the DFP mixture model to be convincingly better than existing state-of-the-art approaches for hierarchical clustering and density modelling.

Abstract:The incorporation of particle inertia into the usual mean field theory for particle aggregation and fragmentation in fluid flows is still an unsolved problem. We therefore suggest an alternative approach that is based on the dynamics of individual inertial particles and apply this to study steady state particle size distributions in a 3-d synthetic turbulent flow. We show how a fractal-like structure, typical of aggregates in natural systems, can be incorporated in an approximate way into the aggregation and fragmentation model by introducing effective densities and radii. We apply this model to the special case of marine aggregates in coastal areas and investigate numerically the impact of three different modes of fragmentation: large-scale splitting, where fragments have similar sizes, erosion, where one of the fragments is much smaller than the other and uniform fragmentation, where all sizes of fragments occur with the same probability. We find that the steady state particle size distribution depends strongly on the mode of fragmentation. The resulting size distribution for large-scale fragmentation is exponential. As some aggregate distributions found in published measurements share this latter characteristic, this may indicate that large-scale fragmentation is the primary mode of fragmentation in these cases.

Models of fragmentation with power law log-normal distributions

Abstract:Two models of binary fragmentation are introduced in which a time dependent transition size produces two regions of fragment sizes above and below the transition size. In the models we consider a fixed rate of fragmentation for the largest fragment and two different rates of fragmentation for the two regions of sizes above and below the transition size. The models are solved exactly in the long time limit to reveal stable time-invariant solutions for the fragment size distributions. A rate of fragmentation proportional to the inverse of fragment size in the smaller size region produces a power law distribution in that region. A rate of fragmentation combined of two terms, one proportional to the inverse of the fragment size and the other proportional to a logarithmic function of the fragment size, in the larger size region produces a log-normal distribution in that region. Special cases of the models with no fragmentation for the smaller fragments are also considered. The similarities between the stable distributions in our models and power law log-normal distributions from experimental work on shock fragmentation of long thin glass rods and rupture of mercury droplets are investigated.

Morphology-dependent random binary fragmentation of in silico fractal-like agglomerates

Abstract:Linear binary fragmentation of synthetic fractal-like agglomerates composed of spherical, equal-size, touching monomers is numerically investigated. Agglomerates of different morphologies are fragmented via random bond removal. The fragmentation algorithm relies on mapping each agglomerate onto an adjacency matrix. The numerically-determined fragment size distributions are U-shaped, clusters break predominantly into two largely dissimilar fragments, becoming more uniform as the fractal dimension decreases. A symmetric beta distribution reproduces the fragment distribution rather accurately. Its exponent depends on the structure (fractal dimension) and number of monomers of the initial agglomerate. A universal fragment distribution, a function only of the initial fractal dimension, is derived by requiring that it satisfy the fragmentation conversation laws and the straight-chain limit. We argue that the fragmentation rate is proportional to the initial agglomerate size.

Abstract:Abstract Anyone who has ever broken a dish or a glass knows that the resulting fragments range from roughly the size of the object all the way down to indiscernibly small pieces: typical fragment size distributions of broken brittle materials follow a power law, and therefore lack a characteristic length scale. The origin of this power-law behavior is still unclear, especially why it is such an universal feature. Here we study the explosive fragmentation of glass Prince Rupert’s drops, and uncover a fundamentally different breakup mechanism. The Prince Rupert’s drops explode due to their large internal stresses resulting in an exponential fragment size distribution with a well-defined fragment size. We demonstrate that generically two distinct breakup processes exist, random and hierarchical, that allows us to fully explain why fragment size distributions are power-law in most cases but exponential in others. We show experimentally that one can even break the same material in different ways to obtain either random or hierarchical breakup, giving exponential and power-law distributed fragment sizes respectively. That a random breakup process leads to well-defined fragment sizes is surprising and is potentially useful to control fragmentation of brittle solids.

Abstract:If the number-size distribution of objects satisfies the condition N ∼ r−D, then a fractal is defined with a fractal dimension D. In many cases, fragmentation results in a fractal distribution. This is taken as evidence that the fragmentation mechanism is scale invariant. Fragments produced by weathering, explosions, and impacts often satisfy a fractal distribution condition over a wide range of scales. Most correlations for number versus size for meteorites, asteroids, and interstellar grains also satisfy the fractal condition. Fractal behavior implies scale invariance; the renormalization group approach is often applicable to scale invariant processes. Two models are considered for a renormalization group approach to fragmentation; the models yield a fractal behavior but give different values for the fractal dimension. These results indicate that the fractal dimension is a measure of the fragility of the fragmented material.

Explosion phenomena in stochastic coagulation-fragmentation models

Abstract:First we establish explosion criteria for jump processes with an arbitrary locally compact separable metric state space. Then these results are applied to two stochastic coagulation-fragmentation models--the direct simulation model and the mass flow model. In the pure coagulation case, there is almost sure explosion in the mass flow model for arbitrary homogeneous coagulation kernels with exponent bigger than 1. In the case of pure multiple fragmentation with a continuous size space, explosion occurs in both models provided the total fragmentation rate grows sufficiently fast at zero. However, an example shows that the explosion properties of both models are not equivalent.

Abstract:We introduce a model for yielding, inspired by fracture models and the failure of a sheared granular medium in which the applied shear is resisted by self-organized force chains. The force chains in the granular medium (GM) are considered as a bundle of fibres of finite strength amongst which stress is randomly redistributed after any other fibre breaks under excessive load. The model provides an exponential distribution of the internal stress and a log-normal shaped distribution of failure stress, in agreement with experimental observations. The model displays critical behaviour which approaches mean field as the number of random neighbours $k$ becomes large and also displays a failure strength which remains finite in the limit of infinite size. From comparison with different models it is argued that this is an effect of uncorrelation. All these macroscopic properties appear statistically stable with respect to the choice of the chains' initial strength distribution. The investigated model is relevant for all systems in which some generic external load or pressure is borne by a number of units, independent of one another except when failure of a unit causes load transfer to some random choice of neighbouring units.

Abstract:Based on the multiple fractal theory and the self-comparability of wear particles, a multiple fractal model of the fragmentizing process of an original wear particle was proposed using number and matrix theory. The fragmentizing course and distribution of wear particles were simulated by the multiple fractal model, and the simulant and actual test results were compared. The results show that the multiple fractal model can be used to describe fragmentizing course and distribution of wear particles accurately on static state (contribution of wear particles) and dynamic state (fragmentizing course); the calculated result by multiple fractal dimension formula was one and only, which shows clear fractal characteristic. The multiple fractal model can describe and prognosticate the wear particles fragmentizing and distribution more reasonably and effectively than traditional models based on statistics.

Abstract:We consider the height process of a Levy process with no negative jumps, and its associated continuous tree representation. Using Levy snake tools developed by Duquesne and Le Gall, with an underlying Poisson process, we construct a fragmentation process, which in the stable case corresponds to the self-similar fragmentation described by Miermont. For the general fragmentation process we compute a family of dislocation measures as well as the law of the size of a tagged fragment. We also give a special Markov property for the snake which is interesting in itself.

Abstract:We introduce a mean-field framework for the study of systems of interacting particles sharing a conserved quantity. The work generalises and unites the existing fields of asset-exchange models, often applied to socio-economic systems, and aggregation-fragmentation models, typically used in modelling the dynamics of clusters. An initial model includes only two-body collisions, which is then extended to include many-body collisions and spontaneous fragmentation. We derive self-consistency equations for the steady-state distribution, which can be solved using a population dynamics algorithm, as well as a full solution for the time evolution of the moments, corroborated with numerical simulations. The generality of the model makes it applicable to many problems and allows for the study of systems exhibiting more complex interactions that those typically considered. The work is relevant to the modelling of barchan dune fields in which interactions between the bedforms and spontaneous fragmentation due to changes in the wind are thought to lead to size-selection. Our work could also be applied in finding wealth distributions when agents can both combine assets as well as split into multiple subsidiaries.
