Abstract:We consider the codimension one asymptotic stability problem for the soliton of the focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation on the line under even perturbations. The main obstruction to full asymptotic stability on the center-stable manifold is a small divisor in a quadratic source term of the perturbation equation. This singularity is due to the threshold resonance of the linearized operator and the absence of null structure in the nonlinearity. The threshold resonance of the linearized operator produces a one-dimensional space of slowly decaying Klein-Gordon waves, relative to local norms. In contrast, the closely related perturbation equation for the sine-Gordon kink does exhibit null structure, which makes the corresponding quadratic source term amenable to normal forms [76]. The main result of this work establishes decay estimates up to exponential time scales for small "codimension one type" perturbations of the soliton of the focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation. The proof is based upon a super-symmetric approach to the study of modified scattering for 1D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with Pöschl-Teller potentials from [76], and an implementation of a version of an adapted functional framework introduced in [39].

Abstract:In this article we study the one-dimensional, asymptotically linear, non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We show the existence of a global smooth curve of standing waves for this problem, and we prove that these standing waves are orbitally stable. As far as we know, this is the first rigorous stability result for the asymptotically linear NLS. We also discuss an application of our results to self-focusing waveguides with a saturable refractive index.

Abstract:Dispersive PDEs are important both in applications (wave phenomena e.g. in hy- drodynamics, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, Bose-Einstein condensates,...) and a mathematically very challenging class of partial differential equations, especially in the time dependent case. An important point with respect to applications is the stability of exact solutions like solitons. Whereas the linear or spectral stability can be addressed analytically in some situations, the proof of full nonlinear (in-)stability remains mostly an open question. In this paper, we numerically investi- gate the transverse (in-)stability of the solitonic solution to the one-dimensional cubic NLS equation, the well known isolated soliton, under the time evolution of several higher dimensional models, being admissible as a tranverse perturbation of the 1d cubic NLS. One of the recent work in this context [42] allowed to prove the instability of the soliton, under the flow of the classical (elliptic) 2d cubic NLS equation, for both localized or periodic perturbations. The characteristics of this instability stay however unknown. Is there a blow-up, dispersion..? We first illustrate how this instability occurs for the elliptic 2d cubic NLS equation and then show that the elliptic-elliptic Davey Stewartson system (a (2+1)-dimensional generalization of the cubic NLS equation) behaves as the former in this context. Then we investigate hyperbolic variants of the above models, for which no theory in this context is available. Namely we consider the hyperbolic 2d cubic NLS equation and the Davey-Stewartson II equations. For localized perturbations, the isolated soliton appears to be unstable for the former case, but seems to be orbitally stable for the latter. For periodic perturbations the soliton is found to be unstable for all transversally perturbed models considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct center stable manifolds around unstable line solitary waves of the Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation on two dimensional cylindrical spaces with $2\pi L$ period. In the previous paper, center stable manifolds around unstable line solitary waves have been constructed without critical speed $c =4n^2/5L^2$ for positive integer $n>1$. Since the linearized operator around line solitary waves with critical speed is degenerate, we prove the stability condition of the center stable manifold for critical speed by applying to the estimate of 4th order term of a Lyapunov function.

Abstract:We study the existence, the stability and the non-degeneracy of normalized standing-waves solutions to a one dimensional non-linear Schrödinger equation. The non-linearity belongs to a class of algebraic functions appropriately defined. We can show that for some of these non-linearities one can observe the existence of degenerate minima, and the multiplicity of positive, radially symmetric minima having the same mass and the same energy. We also prove the stability of the ground-state and the stability of normalized standing-waves whose profile is a minimum of the energy constrained to the mass.

Under hypotheses on the function that can be easily verified in some cases (such as with ), we show that the linearized problem around a small solitary wave presents a unique internal mode. Moreover, under an additional hypothesis (the Fermi golden rule) that can also be verified in the case of powers , we prove the asymptotic stability of the solitary waves with small frequencies.

Abstract:In the present note we study the NLS equation in dimension two with a point interaction and in the supercritical regime, showing two results. After obtaining the (nonstandard) virial formula, we exhibit a set of initial data that blow-up. Moreover we show the standing waves $e^{i\omega t} \varphi_\omega$ corresponding to ground states $\varphi_\omega$ of the action are strongly unstable, at least for sufficiently high $\omega$.

Stability for a family of planar systems with nilpotent critical points

Abstract:Consider a family of planar polynomial systems $\dot x = y^{2l-1} - x^{2k+1}, \dot y =-x +m y^{2s+1},$ where $l,k,s\in\mathbb{N^*},$ $2\le l \le 2s$ and $m\in\mathbb{R}.$ We study the center-focus problem on its origin which is a monodromic nilpotent critical point. By directly calculating the generalized Lyapunov constants, we find that the origin is always a focus and we complete the classification of its stability. This includes the most difficult case: $s=kl$ and $m=(2k+1)!!/(2kl+1)!_{(2l)}.$ In this case, we prove that the origin is always unstable. Our result extends and completes a previous one.

Abstract:We construct a center-stable manifold of the ground state solitons in the energy space for the critical wave equation without imposing any symmetry, as the dynamical threshold between scattering and blow-up, and also as a collection of solutions which stay close to the ground states. Up to energy slightly above the ground state, this completes the 9-set classification of the global dynamics in our previous paper. We can also extend the manifold to arbitrary energy size by adding large radiation. The manifold contains all the solutions scattering to the ground state solitons, and also some of those blowing up in finite time by concentration of the ground states.

Linear asymptotic stability of small-amplitude periodic waves of the generalized Korteweg--de Vries equations

Abstract:In this note, we extend the detailed study of the linearized dynamics obtained for cnoidal waves of the Korteweg--de Vries equation in \cite{JFA-R} to small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations that are not subject to Benjamin--Feir instability. With the adapted notion of stability, this provides for such waves, global-in-time bounded stability in any Sobolev space, and asymptotic stability of dispersive type. When doing so, we actually prove that such results also hold for waves of arbitrary amplitude satisfying a form of spectral stability designated here as dispersive spectral stability.

The global stability of the Minkowski space-time solution to the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in higher dimensions

Abstract:This is a first in a series of papers in which we study the stability of the $(1+n)$-Minkowski space-time, for $n \geq 3$, solution to the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations, in both the Lorenz and harmonic gauges, associated to any arbitrary compact Lie group $G$, and for arbitrary small perturbations. In this first, we prove global stability of the Minkowski space-time, $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}$, in higher dimensions $n \geq 5$ (both in the interior and in the exterior); in the paper that follows, we prove exterior stability for $n=4$; and its sequel, we prove exterior stability for $n=3$, and in all these cases, stability is studied as a solution to the fully coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills system in the Lorenz and harmonic gauges. We show here that for $n \geq 5$, the $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}$ Minkowski space-time in wave coordinates is stable as solution to the Einstein-Yang-Mills system in the Lorenz gauge on the Yang-Mills potential, for sufficiently small perturbations of the Einstein-Yang-Mills potential and metric, and leads to a global Cauchy development. We also obtain dispersive estimates in wave coordinates on the gauge invariant norm of the Yang-Mills curvature, on the Yang-Mills potential in the Lorenz gauge, and on the perturbations of the metric. In this manuscript, we detail all the material of our proof so as to provide lecture notes for Ph.D. students wanting to learn the Cauchy problem for the Einstein-Yang-Mills system.

On the stability of solitary waves in the NLS system of the third-harmonic generation

Abstract:We consider the NLS system of the third-harmonic generation, which was introduced by Sammut. Our interest is in solitary wave solutions and their stability properties. The recent work of Oliveira and Pastor, discussed global well-posedness vs. finite time blow-up, as well as other aspects of the dynamics. These authors have also constructed solitary wave solutions, via the method of mountain pass/Nehari manifold, in an appropriate range of parameters. Specifically, the waves exist only in spatial dimensions $n=1,2,3$. They have also established some stability/instability results for these waves. In this work, we systematically build and study solitary waves for this important model. We construct the waves in the largest possible parameter space, and we provide a complete classification of their stability. In dimension one, we show stability, whereas, in $n=2,3$, they are generally spectrally unstable, except for a small region, where they do enjoy an extra pseudo-conformal symmetry. Finally, we discuss instability by a blow-up. In the case $n=3$, and for a more restrictive set of parameters, we use virial identities methods to derive the strong instability, in the spirit of Ohta's approach. In $n=2$, the virial identities reduce matters, via conservation of mass and energy, to the initial data. Our conclusions mirror closely the well-known results for the scalar cubic focusing NLS, while the proofs are much more involved.

Abstract:Ground states of a L2-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are known to be orbitally stable in the energy class H1 thanks to its variational characterization. In this paper, we will show L2-orbital stability of 1-solitons to a one-dimensional cubic NLS equation for any initial data which are close to 1-solitons in L2. Moreover, we prove that if the initial data are in H3 in addition to being small in L2, then the solution remains in an L2-neighborhood of a specific 1-soliton solution for all the time. The proof relies on the Backlund transformation between zero and soliton solutions of this integrable equation.

Abstract:We consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations on flat tori satisfying a simple and explicit Diophantine non-degeneracy condition. Provided that the nonlinearity contains a cubic term, we prove the almost global existence and stability of most of the small solutions in high regularity Sobolev spaces. To this end, we develop a normal form approach designed to handle general resonant Hamiltonian partial differential equations for which it is possible to modulate the frequencies by using the initial data.

On the formation of singularities for the slightly supercritical NLS equation with nonlinear damping

Abstract:We consider the focusing, mass-supercritical NLS equation augmented with a nonlinear damping term. We provide sufficient conditions on the nonlinearity exponents and damping coefficients for finite-time blow-up. In particular, singularities are formed for focusing and dissipative nonlinearities of the same power, provided that the damping coefficient is sufficiently small. Our result thus rigorously proves the non-regularizing effect of nonlinear damping in the mass-supercritical case, which was suggested by previous numerical and formal results. We show that, under our assumption, the damping term may be controlled in such a way that the self-similar blow-up structure for the focusing NLS is approximately retained even within the dissipative evolution. The nonlinear damping contributes as a forcing term in the equation for the perturbation around the self-similar profile, that may produce a growth over finite time intervals. We estimate the error terms through a modulation analysis and a careful control of the time evolution of total momentum and energy functionals.

Linear instability of relative equilibria for $n$-body problems in the plane

Abstract:Following Smale, we study simple symmetric mechanical systems of $n$ point particles in the plane. In particular, we address the question of the linear and spectral stability properties of relative equilibria, which are special solutions of the equations of motion. Our main result is a sufficient condition to detect spectral (hence linear) instability. Namely, we prove that if the Morse index of an equilibrium point with even nullity is odd, then the associated relative equilibrium is spectrally unstable. The proof is based on some refined formulæ for computing the spectral flow. As a notable application of our theorem, we examine two important classes of singular potentials: the $\alpha$-homogeneous one, with $\alpha \in (0, 2)$, which includes the gravitational case, and the logarithmic one. We also establish, for the $\alpha$-homogeneous potential, an inequality which is useful to test the spectral instability of the associated relative equilibrium.

Stability and largeness properties of minimal surfaces in higher codimension

Abstract:We consider stable minimal surfaces of genus 1 in Euclidean space and in Riemannian manifolds. Under the condition of covering stability (all finite covers are stable) we show that a genus 1 finite total curvature minimal surface in $\mathbb R^n$ lies in an even dimensional affine subspace and is holomorphic for some constant orthogonal complex structure. For stable minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds we give an explicit bound on the systole in terms of a positive lower bound on the isotropic curvature. As an application we estimate the systole of noncyclic abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of PIC manifolds. This gives a new proof of the result of [5] that the fundamental cannot contain a noncyclic free abelian subgroup. The proofs apply the structure theory of holomorphic vector bundles over genus 1 Riemann surfaces developed by M. Atiyah [2].

Non-Linear Stability of Spherical Systems in MOND

Abstract:We prove the non-linear stability of a large class of spherically symmetric equilibrium solutions of both the collisonless Boltzmann equation and of the Euler equations in MOND. This is the first such stability result that is proven with mathematical rigour in MOND. While we strive to prove our stability theorems, we develop new, genuinely Mondian ideas how arising mathematical difficulties can be solved. At some points it was necessary to restrict our analysis to spherical symmetry. We discuss every point where this extra assumption was necessary and outline which efforts must be undertaken to get along without it in future works. In the end we show on the example of a polytropic model how our stability result can be applied.
