Abstract:The Qixi Festival is a traditional festival in China, which inherits the production model of men's farming and women's weaving for thousands of years. It is considered as a symbol of Chinese farming culture and widely propagated in many provinces in China since a long time ago. However, people in different areas celebrate this festival in different ways during different periods. This can be found in the documents that recorded in local chronicles. This research takes Shanxi Province as an example. Through sorting out 72 types of local chronicles that recorded the contents of the Qixi Festival which compiled during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, we found that the differences mainly manifested in four aspects: the gender and age of the participants, the objects of sacrifice, the sacrificial offering, and the behavior of begging dexterousness. Through analyzing, it can be seen that these differences are caused by the impact of the environment and also related to the integration of multiple cultural elements in the festival itself.

Abstract:The Double Seventh Festival,or Qixi Festival,which is known to almost everyone in traditional agricultural society,has a long history and profound cultural connotation.It's not only closely related to the legend The Cowherd and the Weaving Maid,but shares a part in Chinese unique farming culture.Based on the previous studies and literary works,the paper elaborates and analyzes some elements and customs concerning the Double Seventh Festival.For example,women would offer fruit and pastries to the Weaving Maid in return for a blessing of intelligence,or if spiders were seen to weave webs on sacrificial objects,it was believed that the Weaving Maid was offering positive feedback.Through these customs,the paper digs into the traces of the embedded farming culture.It's expected that the study can help readers understand the early history of agriculture in our country and have a more profound and comprehensive knowledge about the cultural connotation implied in the Double Seventh Festival.

Comparing the current situation of the two festivals in China, we may easily find that Chinese Qixi has longer history, more romantic love and deeper emotion. On the contrary, St. Valentine's Day has better atmosphere. What we should do is to find the reason, attach importance to the traditional day, keep down the custom, and to make the traditional day the main stream of Chinese festivals.

Abstract:Qixiang is a unique sacrificial culture created by the Han army eight banners in northeast China. This culture not only has elements such as shamanism and Han people burning incense, but also has military sacrificial elements. This paper argues that Qixiang is the evolution and legacy of Maji, a military sacrificial ritual in ancient China. The Han military banner people in the Qing Dynasty took Maji as the main body, combined the Manchu Shamanism with the Han incense burning, and created a cultural symbol representing their own ethnic group. At present, the study of Qixiang not only helps to understand the complexity of the development and evolution of Manchu shamanism, but also helps to reveal the ethnic identity of Han bannermen under the Eight Banners system of the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:Chinese traditional festivals are known as a series of transitional points that the Chinese ancestors set to represent the process of one's life.They confirmed their respective positions in the cosmos by symbolizing the diachronic order of life and relating Heaven and Man,in order to balance the rhythm of life.The pattern of reduplicated odd-numbered festivals is the most obvious in terms of such transitional points.On the Chinese lunar calendar,for example,the small circle from January 1st to 7th(1/1—1/7) and the big circle from January 1st(1/1),March 3rd(3/3),May 5th(5/5),July 7th(7/7) to September 9th (9/9) are mysteriously identical with the Chinese traditional thought of divining figures generating things and human beings: One's life originates from 1,takes form at 3,becomes established at 5,flourishes at 7,and settles(at 9.)The first day of the first lunar month,or January 1st on the lunar calendar,is the first day of what is traditionally known as Chinese New Year.People represent the law of the cosmos expressed in I Ching(The Book of Changes): ″It takes seven days to go and come back.″ So,in the seven days between December 23rd and 30th on the lunar calendar people send deities to the Ultimate Reality,while in the following seven(days(between) January 1st and 7th of Chinese New Year) people celebrate the recreation of human beings.The period from January 1st to September 9th is the big circle that simulates the cycle of one's life.Human beings are created on January 7th,the day called the ″human's day″.When growing up till March 3rd,they symbolize their own initial growth by the ritual of floating boiled eggs on an eastern river.On May 5th, they symbolize their own further growth by the ritual of eating eggs and zongzi(pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo,which is synonymous with bearing sons).When it comes to July 7th,they become mature enough to produce in the symbolic form of the magpie bridge connecting the man and the woman,and of the spiders spinning a net on melons.Finally,September 9th is the exact day on which they return to the Ultimate: they realize the end by climbing the mountain and drinking chrysanthemum liquor.Through these points,human beings,who are ready for rebirth,learn how to go from the new birth,growth,maturation,and marriage to declination.In so doing, they are perfecting their state of mind by feeling this natural process of life,which will lead to the ultimate harmony eventually.Together with the reduplicated even-numbered festivals through which human beings communicate with the environment,and with the ″half-month″ festivals which represent the communication between human beings and deities,reduplicated odd-numbered festivals in China form the three-fold prototypical system of Chinese traditional festivals which symbolize the origin,the existence and the ultimate end of one's life.
Zhoucun "Wick-carrying" Performance

Abstract:Zhoucun, known as the "First village under heaven", is located in Eastern Shandong and is one of the jurisdictional districts of Zibo City. Zhoucun belonged to Yuling town, in the State of Qi during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods of China. It has had flourishing trade ever since ancient times and once was honored as "Golden Zhoucun", "Overland Port", and "The town of silk". "Wick-carrying" is a kind of ancient folk art popular in Zhoucun. There is a beautiful story about "Wick-carrying". Bixiayuan Jun (the Mount Tai Goddess) was born in Changshan, Zhoucun. The 15th day of the third month of each Chinese lunar calendar year is her birthday. On the third dahy of the third month of each lunar year, Zhoucun people begin to prepare for greeting the Goddess of Mount Tai. They select some reliable people to go to Mount Tai, set up the tablet of the Mount Tai Goddess for worship and then go back to Zichuan. One of these people runs on ahead to Zhoucun to provide villagers with the message and all the people begin to prepare for to greet their return. Every year, from this day till the 15th day of the third month of the lunar year, Zhoucun holds a sacrificial performance. Many performances such as the dragon lantern, the lion dance, the running bamboo horse dance, and the running dry-land boat dance are held during this period. In order to create an active atmosphere for the performance, the clever Zhoucun people improvised stilts and candlestick, and created the "Wick-carrying" through the advanced weaving technology of Zhoucun.

Abstract:The article analyses the connection between Chinese folk calendar and the fundamental to the whole religious and social tradition of China ancestor worship. With the aim to clarify the role of folk calendar in the formation of the traditional culture, the author makes use of the theory of the Chinese philosopher Li Zehou about the development stages of the mankind evolution and civilization as stages of a process of sedimentation. The article presents two examples with the seasonal festivals Qingming and Chongyang, both dedicated to the ancestor worship. Origin, development and functions of this festivals are traced in the context of the ancestor worship and the culture of the filial piety (xiao), based on the latter. The author uses the Dual Filial Piety Model, developed by Bedford and Yeh and creates a consequent model for describing the functions of the festivals Qingming and Chongyang as a binary complex of corresponding rituals. Thеse rituals are analysed as fulfilling basic psychological and social needs of the members of the Han ethnic community in connection to the specific background of the culture of filial piety (xiao).

Abstract:Modern world processes lead to the fact that different cultures are becoming more and more involved in each other's cultural areas. Changes in one cultural field affect the cultural field of another. Today, cooperation between Russia and China is at one of the highest points of development, the initiatives of the two countries in the field of cultural studies give impetus to the development of research relations between the two countries. In this regard, domestic science needed a deeper study of the cultural traditions of the Chinese people. Traditional holidays are an integral part of Chinese society. Festive traditions contain a rich national coloring, rich cultural content, express national emotions and humanistic values, reflect the mentality and culture of the Chinese people. The festive culture of the Chinese reveals an inextricable link with the traditional calendar sequential course of life, in connection with this, its originality and originality are more clearly manifested. The Qingming holiday in China is considered one of the main spring holidays, it not only embodies the cyclic nature of natural life and human life, but also reflects the principle of harmonizing human activity with natural phenomena. The fundamental idea of Chinese civilization - the idea of the inseparable unity of man and nature - is especially fully and convincingly manifested in the history and tradition of the Qingming holiday. In the article, the author considers holiday traditions, the origin of which is rooted in the distant past. At the same time, the connection between the past and the present, their fluidity and interchangeability are clearly felt. The article confirms the idea that the Qingming holiday is a multi-aspect phenomenon in which the concept of "the unity of man and nature" and the ideologies of various historical epochs are synthesized and simultaneously coexist. Conducting a historical analysis, the author emphasizes the need to merge history and the present, notes the paradoxical nature of the combination in one holiday of seemingly incomparable things: the commemoration of the dead and the joy of a new life. It is in understanding the deep essence of the holiday that the harmony of the present moment of being lies. Honoring one's ancestors, caring for one's roots, strengthening and uniting forces within the family and clan - all this distinguishes the true, according to the author, unity of the people.

Abstract:The Seven Sisters Festival (also known as Qixi Festival) is especially important to Cantonese women, with differences in syncretic religious practices and beliefs between marriage resistance and nonresistance regions. Despite being forerunners in the wave of women's migration since the 19th century, developments in ritualistic practices and sisterhood structures of these Cantonese women after their migration remain largely unexplored. This article investigates the formation of Milky Way associations, liturgical sororities for organizing festival celebrations and worship of the Seven Sisters, and its influence on the social and religious lives of Cantonese women in Singapore. Through highlighting the coexistence of different belief systems, shifts in interest from China as the center of sociocultural origin to post-war/post-independence Singapore in the periphery, as well as negotiations with space, this article shows that Cantonese women have been active agents in reorganizing themselves, interacting within and outside of their communities, and engaging in heritage meaning-making. By compiling a non-exhaustive list of over 100 Milky Way associations in Singapore in the 1930–1940s, this article spotlights the magnitude and significance of the Seven Sisters Festival, which has disappeared since the 1970s with little material trace.

It not only described the psychologies and debauchery lives of the literati, but also recorded the rules and the interrelated practices of the imperial examination; not only depicted the regulations and the corruptted atmosphere of the officialdom, but also observed the historical sceneries and the social custom; and so on. ShiJi perhaps only described one single thing if we look the works individually, but it reflected the grand and broad social prospect if we look the works integratedly and could be called "poetry of historic significance".

Abstract:Праздник Дуаньу считается одним из трёх больших традиционных праздников китайского народа. История праздника насчитывает более 2500 лет. В 2009 г. праздник вошёл в список нематериального культурного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Традиции и обычаи праздника Дуаньу включают состязание в гребле на драконьих лодках, плетение пятицветных браслетов, ароматные мешочки от злых духов и болезней, развешивание над входной дверью и стенах веток полыни и аиры, лакомства Цзунцзы и т.д. Традиции и обычаи, с одной стороны, представляют собой особые формы передачи социального и культурного опыта, с другой стороны, они являются укоренившимися в сознании непреходящими культурными кодами. В мифологической картине мира исторические корни традиционных обычаев уходят в глубокую древность, они тесно связаны с магией, ритуалом, мифами и легендами, трудовой деятельностью, мировосприятием, образом жизни, системой ценностей. В данной статье автор анализирует связь между обычаями, обрядами, играми и символическими атрибутами праздника Дуаньу и мифологическими концепциями древних китайцев. В легендах о происхождении Праздника проявляется двойственность структуры мифологического мировоззрения китайского народа. Duanwu Festival, or Dragon Boat Festival, along with Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, is considered one of the «Three Great Traditional festivals of the Chinese People». Its celebration falls on the beginning of summer, the fifth day of the fifth month of the Lunar calendar. The history of the Festival has more than 2500 years. In 2009, the Festival was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The traditions and customs of Duawu Festival include: dragon boat rowing competition, weaving fivecolor bracelets, fragrant bags from evil spirits and diseases, hanging wormwood and calamus branches over the entrance door and walls, Zunzi treats, etc. Traditions and customs, on the one hand, represent special forms of transmission of social and cultural experience, on the other hand, they are ingrained in the consciousness of enduring cultural codes. In the mythological world vision, the historical roots of traditional customs go back to ancient times, which are closely related to magic, ritual, myths and legends, worldview, lifestyle, value system. In this article, the author analyzes the relationship between the customs, rituals, games and symbolic attributes of the Duanwu Festival and the mythological concepts of the ancient Chinese. In the legends about the origin of the Festival, the duality of the structure of the mythological worldview of the Chinese people is manifested. And the diet customs are associated with cosmogonic myths.

Abstract:Being the gene of culture,fairy tales reflect the basic value of a culture.The fairy tale NV WA Mending the Sky highlights women's great spirits of hardworking and enduring hardships,of wisdom and tenaciousness,the status and functions in building society.According to Myth and Archetype Criticism put forward by Frye and Jung,Nv Wa had influence on Taoism,even Chinese attitudes towards women.Finally,the paper points out that improvement of women's status depends on enhancement of women's own qualities and extensive involvement of society building so as to advocate harmonious society today.

Abstract:"The Flight to the Moon" in Lu Xun's "Old Tales Retold" is a modern and secular adaptation of traditional fairy tales under the environment of the times. In his works, Chang'e, who was placed in the secular world, changed from the traditional image of a fairy to a complex image with the characteristics of women of the times. She is not only a sharp secular woman, but also a numb woman under feudal thought, and finally an advanced female image with ideological awakening. In-depth text exploration and analysis of the reasons for the formation and transformation of Chang'e's image from her life and living environment are of great significance to the study of the living environment of women in the times and Mr. Lu Xun's thinking on women's view and women's way out.

Abstract:Quanzhen school was the joint product of the cultures of the Guanlong and Qilu regions. The history of the development of Taoism can be broadly divided into an earlier and a later stage. The earlier stage was represented by Ge Hong, who lived under the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties and sought longevity. The later stage was represented by Wang Chongyang and Qiu Chuji of the Quanzhen School who inherited the Taoist inner alchemy from Chen Tuan and Zhang Boduan of the Five Dynasties and the Song dynasty. The culture of the Qi region, represented by Guanzi's philosophy, consisted of a combination of rites and laws and emphasized syncretism and openness. These cultures were combined and developed in Shandong and after the Han dynasty spread throughout China, becoming the mainstream culture. Abstract:LIJIANG City sits where the Yunnan-Guizhou and Qinghai-Tibet Plateaus converge in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The Old Town of Lijiang, a listed world cultural heritage site, has 900 years of history preserved along its narrow streets. To me, though this was not my first visit, Lijiang and its environs are shrouded in mystery. More than just an ancient city with winding alleyways and old houses, its unique customs and legends fill outsiders with fascination. The locals still enjoy the old ways of living and thinking. To the north, high hills rise up above the fields towards Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the holy incarnation of the local Naxi people’s patron god. Returning to Lijiang, I found that still holds the same ease and grace, and time here seems frozen.
