Abstract:This article opens the black box of total factor productivity by decomposing this “all‐in‐one” index into various input‐embedded and input‐free productivities in a new growth accounting framework. The new method identifies different channels through which growth drivers affect economic growth and finds the most effective way to boost the economy, which is unidentified in standard method. This new approach uses a varying coefficient stochastic frontier model, which integrates the standpoints of the endogenous growth theory and the induced innovation theory into a reduced‐form productivity analysis. The new growth accounting is then applied to study the impacts and contributions of R&D investments, international trade, and structural transformation to world agricultural growth during the period of 1962 to 2014. The empirical results provide new evidence to support the endogenous growth theory and the induced innovation theory, indicating the necessity of using the new growth accounting method.

Abstract:This study investigates the sources of economic growth for Latin American economies. With two centuries of data and extended growth accounting methods, the study shows that poor total factor productivity (TFP) growth is the key to understanding Latin America's low economic growth relative to other economies. Using a functional form of TFP growth, based on second‐generation growth models, furthers analyses to show some empirical evidence for growth induced by R&D, knowledge spillovers, educational attainment and the distance to the frontier. However, the magnitude effect is very small and when compared to the OECD countries, the gap between the TFP growth generating factors is very substantial. An intricate policy structure should be implemented for Latin America to foster an environment that is conducive to aid permanent TFP and economic growth.

Abstract:We examine the relative importance of the growth of physical and human capital and the growth of total factor productivity (TFP) using newly organized data on 145 countries that spans more than 100 years for 23 of these countries. For all countries, only 14% of average output growth per worker is associated with TFP growth. We use priors from theories to construct estimates of the relative importance of the variances of aggregate input growth and TFP growth across countries. Much of the importance of the variance of TFP growth across countries is associated with negative TFP growth. (JEL O47, O50, O57, O30, N10)

Abstract:This article surveys the recent empirical literature on total factor productivity (TFP) growth in East Asia, and the debate about the sources of growth in the region. It is concluded that: (i) the main merit of this literature is that it has helped focus the attention of scholars on the growth process of East Asia; (ii) the theoretical problems underlying the notion of TFP are so significant that the whole concept should be seriously questioned; (Hi) the TFP growth estimates for the region vary significantly, even for the same country and time period; and (iv) research on growth in East Asia based on the estimation of TFP growth is an activity subject to decreasing returns. If we are to advance in understanding how East Asia grew during the last 30 years we need new avenues of research.

Abstract:To date, the concept, measurement and interpretation of total factor productivity (TFP) growth remains highly discussed but poorly understood. This paper attempts to provide a review of these issues. First, the definition of TFP growth and the related concepts of embodied and disembodied technical change are discussed. Second, a brief overview and critique of TFP growth measuring techniques is provided. Third, the debate surrounding the accounting identity underlying the estimation of a production function for TFP growth is highlighted. Fourth, the usefulness of TFP growth is evaluated (and maintained) in the light of the criticisms hurled at this measure. Finally, some direction for future work on TFP growth is suggested.

Abstract:We use a new growth accounting method to quantify the drivers of world total factor productivity (TFP) growth during 1996–2014 and uncover four main results. World productivity growth is volatile from year to year. This mainly reflects reallocation of labor across country-industries. The contribution of country-industry level productivity growth to world productivity is relatively constant over time. This constancy masks that the increased importance of emerging economies offsets a productivity slowdown in advanced economies. After 2008, this offsetting effect dissipated and world TFP growth declined. These conclusions are robust to the inclusion of markups in the analysis. (JEL E23, E32, O30, O47)

Abstract:Aim of study: The accuracy of international and intertemporal comparisons of total factor productivity (TFP) growth requires the use of indicators that satisfy transitive and multiplicative properties, such as the Färe-Primont index (FPI). This paper compares the evolution of TFP in global agriculture.Area of study: Worldwide.Material and methods: The evolution of TFP in global agriculture was measured by the traditional Malmquist index (MI) and by the FPI, with alternative measurements of input capital.Main results: We found a significantly lower TFP growth with the FPI. New estimates of TFP growth for 1961-2015 show that output-oriented scale-mix efficiency drives TFP growth, with an important technological change between 1996 and 2000 and another in 2014. Regional comparisons reveal heterogeneous trends in efficiency, linked to institutional reforms and agricultural R&D.Research highlights: More realistic figures and global comparisons of agricultural productivity provide a better understanding to implement better policies. Available measures of capital stock do not yield significant differences in TFP estimations, but the precise identification and estimation of the heterogeneous drivers and burdens is fundamental for boosting agricultural productivity and its benefits on global food security.

Abstract:This paper reports estimates of agricultural productivity growth in Asian countries, with special attention to the transition economies. A parametric output distance function approach is formulated to decompose total factor productivity (TFP) growth into its associated components and to examine how input and output intensities shift in response to the adoption of innovations. The results show that by including the transition economies, Asia achieved healthy TFP growth at an annual average rate of 1.9 per cent. However, TFP growth and its components differ widely across the transition countries and at different stages of the transition periods within these countries.

Abstract:Industries learn productivity improvements from their suppliers. The observed empirical importance of these interactions, often omitted by input-output models, mandates larger attention. This article embeds interdependent total factor productivity (TFP) growth into a general non-parametric input-output model. TFP growth is assumed to be Cobb-Douglas in TFP-stocks of adjacent sectors, where elasticities are the input-output coefficients. Studying how the steady state of the system reacts to changes in research effort bears insight for policy and the input-output literature. First, industries higher in the supply chain see a greater multiplication of their productivity gains. Second, the presence of `laggard' industries can bottleneck the the rest of the economy. By deriving these insights formally, we review a canonical method for aggregating TFP -- Hulten's Theorem -- and show the potential importance of backward linkages.

Abstract:In this article, we delve into the traditionally opaque total factor productivity (TFP) "black box" by dissecting it into its constituent elements—technology and efficiency—based on input–output variables from a global supply chain vantage point. Utilizing growth accounting methods, the article seeks to discern the variety of routes through which technology (frontier movement) and efficiency (catch‐up effects) propagate their effects on TFP. Our primary objective is to identify the most potent mechanism for fostering productivity enhancement, a task that previously eluded systematic examination. The methodology involves creating an empirical approximation of the agricultural production frontier from a selection of national data. Bounded‐adjusted linear programming techniques are subsequently employed to disentangle the observed TFP growth within the agricultural sector of each country into its technology and efficiency facets. It is important to note that this study also integrates resource and environmental footprints as additional input–output variables, quantified via the multi‐region input–output (MRIO) model. The analysis, spanning from 2000 to 2016, reveals that the most advanced nations demonstrate the most vigorous growth in agricultural productivity, with a global upward trend in agricultural productivity over the sampled years.

Abstract:In this paper, we reviewed the arguments related to the Total Factor Productivity(TFP). We argued that it is misguided to apply TFP as the indicator of the quality of economic growth of new emerging developing countries because of imbalanced growth. We modeled the import of equipment and the technology diffusion process in NIEs, and calculated the TFP in the two process. The conclusion was that in the conditions of non-equilibrium, the TFP index may have underestimated the technological advances in the emerging developing countries, the economic growth strategy based on the investment may be an unavoidable stage in developing countries.

Abstract:Proceeding from the particular growth path of China's Zhejiang Province,this paper decomposes the TFP at different levels based on the comparison of advantages of different TFP accounting methods and then investigates the drivers of this kind of development path.The results indicate that compared with the average level of the whole country,Zhejiang's TFP is relatively higher.However,the differences have had been mainly formed before the middle of 1990s,which is believed to be mainly due to the particular ownership form and the folk financial system;and since then the convergence of TFP began to exhibit.Furthermore,Zhejiang is much more influenced by education compared with the rest of the country in terms of the economic growth.Meanwhile,the empirical results also indicate that high school and college education have exerted totally different influence on Zhejiang's economy.To be specific,the former positively promote the economic development of the province,while the latter seems to produce a negative impact during the sample period.The author believes that such fact is mainly contributed by the dominant labor-intensity industry structure of this area.

Abstract:The diminishing potential for enhancing productive resources in order to sustain economic growth demands greater emphasis on how efficiently they are used as measured by total factor productivity (TFP). Long-term trends, differences between countries, and macro-level factors were assessed using qualitative and quantitative analysis of economic and financial indicators for a sample of 74 countries from 1978 to 2022. The article confirms that Russia and most other countries have been experiencing a steady downturn in total factor productivity. In some cases, productivity has been falling since the 2008 global financial crisis because key factors changed in the post-crisis period. In particular, growth of TFP has become correlated with increasing fixed investment, a high level of domestic financial development and protection of property rights, and limitation of state intervention in the economy, as well as with following a model of capitalism that allows for a moderate level of state ownership. Those developing countries of Central and Eastern Europe that have consistently implemented market-oriented reforms have also been able to sustain growth. The increasing importance of highly country-specific variables suggests that countries are trying to make greater use of domestic economic policies to support TFP growth and thus counteract the global productivity decline observed by many economists. Although individual countries may succeed in maintaining their growth, such measures are not sufficient to prevent a global slowdown.

Economic Growth in a Cross Section of Countries

Abstract:In neoclassical growth models with diminishing returns to capital, a country's per capita growth rate tends to be inversely related to its initial level of income per person. This convergence hypothesis seems to be inconsistent with the cross-country evidence, which indicates that per capita growth rates for about 100 countries in the post-World War II period are uncorrelated with the starting level of per capita product. However, if one holds constant measures of initial human capital-measured by primary and secondary school-enrollment rates - there is evidence that countries with lower per capita product tend to grow faster. Countries with higher human capital also have lower fertility rates and higher ratios of physical investment to GDP. These results on growth, fertility, and investment are consistent with some recent theories of endogenous economic growth. With regard to government, the cross-country data indicate that government consumption is inversely related to growth, whereas public investment has little relation with growth. Average growth rates are positively related to political stability, which may capture the benefits of secure property rights. There is also some indication that distortions of investment-goods prices are adverse for growth. Finally, the analysis leaves unexplained a good deal of the relatively weak growth performances of countries in sub- Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Abstract:Applying the methods of growth accounting decomposition and econometric regressions to a sample of developed economies over the period of 1970-2011, this study examines the differential role of manufacturing TFP growth and non-manufacturing TFP growth in the long-run economic growth by affecting aggregate TFP growth and by influencing capital and labour input growth. The results show that manufacturing TFP growth contributes to economic growth directly but also through the contributions of capital input growth and labour input growth indirectly. In contrast, such direct and indirect effects are not observed for non-manufacturing TFP growth. The findings suggest that despite the declining share of manufacturing in GDP, maintaining the growth of manufacturing TFP is critical for economic growth. The study provides a useful explanation of why many developed economies have started to engage in 'reindustrialization' strategy after the global financial crisis in 2008 and carries important policy implications. Abstract:Using a newly constructed panel dataset for agriculture in 17 OECD countries over the 1973–2011 period, we investigate the role of capital deepening in affecting agricultural TFP growth and the convergence of relative TFP levels across countries with different relative factor endowments. Our results show that capital deepening contributes positively to agricultural productivity growth among countries with similar levels of land relative to labor as reflected in relative prices. Depending on the relative endowments of land to labor, countries with relatively more abundant land are more likely to achieve technological gains through capital deepening than countries with relatively more labor. This finding is consistent with Hayami and Ruttan ( 1970a ) and provides supportive evidence for the induced innovation hypothesis.

Abstract:Abstract Our objective in this paper is to explain a method to decompose the sources of total factor productivity (TFP) growth into technological progress and changes in technical efficiency within the framework of the varying coefficients frontier production function. An empirical application is demonstrated using the Chinese provincial‐level agricultural data covering the period 1970–87. The results indicate that TFP growth in the prereform period was negative in twenty out of twenty‐eight provinces and that it was positive in almost all provinces during the reform periods, while negative in sixteen out of twenty‐eight provinces in the postreform periods of 1984–87.

Abstract:Total factor productivity (TFP) growth measures usually focus on a certain direction of optimization and ignore the general setting encompassing the input and output orientations simultaneously. This paper uses the generalized Luenberger-Hicks-Moorsteen (LHM) TFP indicator which is additively complete and can be decomposed by three mutually exclusive elements. The input- and output-oriented analysis is undertaken in order to derive the generalized TFP measured. The paper uses the corn production data from 19 Chinese provinces over the period of 2004–2017. This research is important as China is the second largest corn producer in the world. The TFP growth was observed for Chinese corn farming the rate of 0.56% per year. The technological progress (0.48%) was the major source of the TFP growth, whereas the importance of the technical efficiency change (0.09%) and scale efficiency change (–0.01%) was negligible.

Abstract:The study investigates the drivers of total factor productivity (TFP) growth, covering 99 European regions from 31 countries over the period 2000–13. It shows that human capital endowment had a positive effect upon TFP growth, particularly in advanced regions, but the effect from regions’ own research and development (R&D) expenditures was largely absent. The effects of human capital and R&D on TFP growth varied with the productivity gap. Further, there was a threshold effect in convergence, where stronger TFP growth was associated with both a larger productivity gap and a higher initial level of productivity. Spatial spillover effects had a positive impact upon TFP growth.

Abstract:This paper introduces sectorial heterogeneity in TFPs in a growth model to generate new insights on trade, sectorial reallocation, and economic growth. The rate of overall economic growth in this model is a simple average of sectorial growth in a closed economy, but will depend on trade parameters in an open economy as openness to trade shifts resources toward fast-growing sectors. We find that the overall growth rate is unambiguously higher as the number of trading partners increases. These conclusions survive even after trade cost is introduced. Nevertheless, trade share and growth rate may not move in the same direction as trade liberalization is pursued or as the number of trading partners is increased. This finding may explain why the existing empirical evidence concerning this relationship between growth and trade share remains inconclusive.
