Abstract:Canopy flows in the atmospheric surface layer play important economic and ecological roles, governing the dispersion of passive scalars in the environment. The interaction of high-velocity fluid and large-scale surface-mounted obstacles in canopy flows produces drag and causes intense, inhomogeneous, and anisotropic turbulence. In this work, we focus on the turbulent dispersion of passive scalars by studying the ``pair dispersion'' - a statistical measure of relative motion between particles. We analyze the results of a 3D-PTV experiment in a wind tunnel canopy flow, focusing on small scales. We confirm the existence of local isotropy of pair dispersion at scales smaller than a characteristic shear length scale $L_\Gamma=(\epsilon/\Gamma^3)^{1/2}$, where $\epsilon$ and $\Gamma$ are the mean dissipation rate and shear rate, respectively. Furthermore, we show that pair dispersion in this locally isotropic regime is a scale-dependent super-diffusive process, similar to what occurs in homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows. In addition, we measure the pair relative velocity correlation function, showing that its de-correlation occurs in the locally isotropic regime, and discuss the implications of this observation for modeling pair dispersion. Thus, our study extends the fundamental understanding of turbulent pair dispersion to the anisotropic, inhomogeneous, turbulent canopy flow, bringing valuable information for modeling scalar dispersion in the atmospheric surface layer.

A scale-wise analysis of intermittent momentum transport in dense canopy flows

Abstract:We investigate the intermittent dynamics of momentum transport and its underlying time scales in the near-wall region of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer in the presence of a vegetation canopy. This is achieved through an empirical analysis of the persistence time scales (periods between successive zero-crossings) of momentum flux events, and their connection to the ejection–sweep cycle. Using high-frequency measurements from the GoAmazon campaign, spanning multiple heights within and above a dense canopy, the analysis suggests that, when the persistence time scales ( ) of momentum flux events from four different quadrants are separately normalized by (integral time scale of the vertical velocity), their distributions remain height-invariant. This result points to a persistent memory imposed by canopy-induced coherent structures, and to their role as an efficient momentum-transporting mechanism between the canopy airspace and the region immediately above. Moreover, exhibits a power-law scaling at times , with an exponential tail appearing for . By separating the flux events based on , we discover that around 80 % of the momentum is transported through the long-lived events ( ) at heights immediately above the canopy, while the short-lived ones ( ) only contribute marginally ( ). To explain the role of instantaneous flux amplitudes in momentum transport, we compare the measurements with newly developed surrogate data and establish that the range of time scales involved with amplitude variations in the fluxes tends to increase as one transitions from within to above the canopy.

Temporal large-scale intermittency and its impact on the statistics of turbulence

Abstract:Turbulent flows in three dimensions are characterized by the transport of energy from large to small scales through the energy cascade. Since the small scales are the result of the nonlinear dynamics across the scales, they are often thought of as universal and independent of the large scales. However, as famously remarked by Landau, sufficiently slow variations of the large scales should nonetheless be expected to impact small-scale statistics. Such variations, often termed large-scale intermittency, are pervasive in experiments and even in simulations, while differing from flow to flow. Here we evaluate the impact of temporal large-scale fluctuations on velocity, vorticity, and acceleration statistics by introducing controlled sinusoidal variations of the energy injection rate into direct numerical simulations of turbulence. We find that slow variations can have a strong impact on flow statistics, raising the flatness of the considered quantities. We discern three contributions to the increased flatness, which we model by superpositions of statistically stationary flows. Overall, our work demonstrates how large-scale intermittency needs to be taken into account in order to ensure comparability of statistical results in turbulence.

$\mathcal{L}$-moments reveal the scales of momentum transport in dense canopy flows

Abstract:The interaction between a dense forest canopy and atmosphere is a complex fluid-dynamical problem with a wide range of practical applications, spanning from the aspects of carbon sequestration to the spread of wildfires through a forest. To delineate the eddy processes specific to canopy flows, we develop an $\mathcal{L}$-moment based event framework and apply it on a suite of observational datasets encompassing both canopy and atmospheric surface layer flows. In this framework, the turbulent fluctuations are considered as a chronicle of positive and negative events having finite lengths or time scales, whose statistical distributions are quantified through the $\mathcal{L}$ moments. $\mathcal{L}$ moments are statistically more robust than the conventional moments and have earlier been used in hydrology applications, but here we show how this concept is useful even for canopy flows. The $\mathcal{L}$-moment framework is complemented with wavelet analysis, leading to a discovery of a mixed time scale controlling the momentum exchanges between the atmosphere and the canopy air space. The origin of this mixed-scale is intimately linked to an interaction between two different eddy processes that transport momentum in the gradient and counter-gradient directions, respectively. This finding gives rise to a conceptual model of canopy turbulence that resolves a long-standing issue in canopy flows: why the integral timescale of vertical velocity increases as the heights approach the forest floor? Moreover, this model explains the intermittent nature of the wind inside a canopy despite its average being nearly zero due to canopy drag.

Abstract:The turbulent flow within and above a sparse canopy is investigated using direct numerical simulations. The balance of Reynolds to viscous stresses within the canopy is observed to be similar to that over a smooth wall. From this, a scaling based on their local sum is proposed. Using the conventional scaling based on the total stress, the velocity fluctuations are typically reported to be reduced within the canopy compared to smooth walls. When the proposed height-dependent scaling is used, however, the fluctuations are closer to those over smooth walls. This suggests that, in a large part, the effect of the canopy can be reduced to the modification of the local scaling, rather than to the direct interaction of the canopy elements with the turbulence. Based on this, a model is proposed that consists of a drag that acts on the mean flow alone, aiming to produce the correct scaling without modifying the fluctuations directly. This model is shown to estimate the fluctuations within the canopy better than the conventional, homogeneous-drag model. Nevertheless, homogenised methods are not able to reproduce the local effects of the canopy elements. In order to capture these, another model is proposed that applies the mean-only drag on a truncated representation of the canopy geometry.
Scaling and dynamics of turbulence over sparse canopies

Abstract:Turbulent flows within and over sparse canopies are investigated using direct numerical simulations at moderate friction Reynolds numbers $Re_{unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}approx 520$ and 1000. The height of the canopies studied is $h^{+}approx 110{-}200$ , which is typical of some engineering canopies but much lower than for most vegetation canopies. The analysis of the effect of Reynolds number in our simulations, however, suggests that the dynamics observed would be relevant for larger Reynolds numbers as well. In channel flows, the distribution of the total stress is linear with height. Over smooth walls, the total stress is the sum of the viscous and the Reynolds shear stresses, the ‘fluid stress’ $unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{f}$ . In canopies, in turn, there is an additional contribution from the canopy drag, which can dominate within. Furthermore, the full Reynolds shear stress has contributions from the dispersive, element-induced flow and from the background turbulence, the part of the flow that remains once the element-induced flow is filtered out. For the present sparse canopies, we find that the ratio of the viscous stress and the background Reynolds shear stress to their sum, $unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{f}$ , is similar to that over smooth walls at each height, even within the canopy. From this, a height-dependent scaling based on $unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{f}$ is proposed. Using this scaling, the background turbulence within the canopy shows similarities with turbulence over smooth walls. This suggests that the background turbulence scales with $unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{f}$ , rather than the conventional scaling based on the total stress. This effect is essentially captured when the canopy is substituted by a drag force that acts on the mean-velocity profile alone, aiming to produce the correct $unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{f}$ , without the discrete presence of the canopy elements acting directly on the fluctuations. The proposed mean-only forcing is shown to produce better estimates for the turbulent fluctuations compared to a conventional, homogeneous-drag model. These results suggest that a sparse canopy acts on the background turbulence primarily through the change it induces on the mean-velocity profile, which in turn sets the scale for turbulence, rather than through a direct interaction of the canopy elements with the fluctuations. The effect of the element-induced flow, however, requires the representation of the individual canopy elements.

Abstract:In turbulence, ideas of energy cascade and energy flux, substantiated by the exact Kolmogorov relation, lead to the determination of scaling laws for the velocity spatial correlation function. Here we ask whether similar ideas can be applied to temporal correlations. We critically review the relevant theoretical and experimental results concerning the velocity statistics of a single fluid particle in the inertial range of statistically homogeneous, stationary and isotropic turbulence. We stress that the widely used relations for the second structure function, D-2(t) equivalent to <[nu(t) - nu(0)](2)> proportional to epsilon t, relies on dimensional arguments only: no relation of D-2(t) to the energy cascade is known, neither in two- nor in three-dimensional turbulence. State of the art experimental and numerical results demonstrate that at high Reynolds numbers, the derivative dD(2)(t)/dt has a finite non-zero slope starting from t approximate to 2 tau(eta). The analysis of the acceleration spectrum Phi(A)(omega) indicates a possible small correction with respect to the dimensional expectation Phi(A)(omega) similar to omega(0) but present data are unable to discriminate between anomalous scaling and finite Reynolds effects in the second order moment of velocity Lagrangian statistics. Hidden scale invariance in Navier-Stokes intermittency

Abstract:We expose a hidden scaling symmetry of the Navier-Stokes equations in the limit of vanishing viscosity, which stems from dynamical space-time rescaling around suitably defined Lagrangian scaling centres. At a dynamical level, the hidden symmetry projects solutions which differ up to Galilean invariance and global temporal scaling onto the same representative flow. At a statistical level, this projection repairs the scale invariance, which is broken by intermittency in the original formulation. Following previous work by the first author, we here postulate and substantiate with numerics that hidden symmetry statistically holds in the inertial interval of fully developed turbulence. We show that this symmetry accounts for the scale-invariance of a certain class of observables, in particular, the Kolmogorov multipliers. Abstract:We investigate flow dynamics in rivers characterized by basin areas and daily mean discharge spanning different orders of magnitude. We show that the delayed increments evaluated at time scales ranging from days to months can be opportunely rescaled to the same non-Gaussian probability density function. Such a scaling breaks up above a certain critical horizon, where a behavior typical of thermodynamic systems at the critical point emerges. We finally show that both the scaling behavior and the break up of the scaling are universal features of river flow dynamics.

Abstract:We report measurements of the second-order Lagrangian structure function and the Lagrangian velocity spectrum in an intensely turbulent laboratory flow. We find that the asymmetries of the large-scale flow are reflected in the small-scale statistics. In addition, we present new measurements of the Lagrangian structure function scaling constant C-0, which is of central importance to stochastic turbulence models as well as to the understanding of turbulent pair dispersion and scalar mixing. The scaling of C-0 with the turbulence level is also investigated, and found to be in agreement with an existing model.

Abstract:Intermittency, i.e., extreme fluctuations at small scales, causes the deviation of turbulence statistics from Kolmogorov's 1941 theoretical predictions. Intermittency effects are especially strong for Lagrangian statistics. Our understanding of how Lagrangian intermittency manifests, however, is still elusive. Here, we study the Lagrangian intermittency in the framework of an exact, yet unclosed probability density function (PDF) equation. Combining this theoretical approach with data from experiments and simulations, no a priori phenomenological assumptions about the structure or properties of the flow have to be made. In this description, the non-self-similar evolution of the velocity increment PDF is determined at all scales by a single function, which is accessible through data from experiments and simulations. This 'intermittency generating function' arises from the dependence of the acceleration of a fluid element on its velocity history, thereby coupling different scales of turbulent motion. Empirically, we find that the intermittency generating function has a simple, approximately self-similar form, which has the surprising implication that Lagrangian intermittency-the absence of self-similarity in the Lagrangian velocity increment statistics-is driven by a self-similar mechanism. The simple form of the intermittency generating function furthermore allows us to formulate a simple model parametrization of the velocity increment PDFs.
From Zero-Mode Intermittency to Hidden Symmetry in Random Scalar Advection

Abstract:The statistical behavior of scalars passively advected by random flows exhibits intermittency in the form of anomalous multiscaling, in many ways similar to the patterns commonly observed in incompressible high-Reynolds fluids. This similarity suggests a generic dynamical mechanism underlying intermittency, though its specific nature remains unclear. Scalar turbulence is framed in a linear setting that points towards a zero-mode scenario connecting anomalous scaling to the presence of statistical conservation laws; the duality is fully substantiated within Kraichnan theory of random flows. However, extending the zero-mode scenario to nonlinear settings faces formidable technical challenges. Here, we revisit the scalar problem in the light of a hidden symmetry scenario introduced in recent deterministic turbulence studies addressing the Sabra shell model and the Navier–Stokes equations. Hidden symmetry uses a rescaling strategy based entirely on symmetry considerations, transforming the original dynamics into a rescaled (hidden) system; It yields the universality of Kolmogorov multipliers and ultimately identifies the scaling exponents as the eigenvalues of Perron-Frobenius operators. Considering a minimal shell model of scalar advection of the Kraichnan type that was previously studied by Biferale & Wirth, the present work extends the hidden symmetry approach to a stochastic setting, in order to explicitly contrast it with the zero-mode scenario. Our study indicates that the zero-mode and the multiplicative scenarios are intrinsically related. While the zero-mode approach solves the eigenvalue problem for order correlation functions, Perron-Frobenius (multiplicative) scenario defines a similar eigenvalue problem in terms of order measures. For systems of the Kraichnan type, the first approach provides a quantitative chararacterization of intermittency, while the second approach highlights the universal connection between the scalar case and a larger class of hydrodynamic models.

Abstract:Abstract The objective of this study was to understand whether spatial differences in runoff generation mechanisms affect the magnitudes of diurnal streamflow fluctuations during low flow periods and which part of the catchment induces the diurnal streamflow signal. The spatiotemporal variability of the streamflow fluctuations observed at 12 locations in the 66‐ha Hydrological Open Air Laboratory experimental catchment in Austria was explained by differences in the vegetation cover and runoff generation mechanisms. Almost a quarter of the volume associated with diurnal streamflow fluctuations at the catchment outlet was explained by transpiration from vegetation along the tributaries; more than three quarters was due to transpiration by the riparian forest along the main stream. The lag times between radiative forcing and evapotranspiration estimated by a solar radiation‐driven model increased from 3 to 11 hr from spring to autumn. The recession time scales increased from 21 days in spring to 54 days in autumn. Observations and model simulations suggest that a separation of scales in transpiration effects on low flows exists both in time and space; that is, the diurnal streamflow fluctuations are induced by transpiration from the riparian vegetation, while most of the catchment evapotranspiration, such as evapotranspiration from the crop fields further away from the stream, do not influence the diurnal signal in streamflow.

Abstract:A sliver state is a classical solution of the string field theory of the tachyon vacuum that represents a background with a single D25-brane. We show that the sliver wavefunctional factors into functionals of the left and right halves of the string, and hence can be naturally regarded as a rank-one projector in a space of half-string functionals. By developing an algebraic oscillator approach we are able construct higher rank projectors that describe configurations of multiple D-branes of various dimensionalities and located at arbitrary positions. The results bear remarkable similarities with non-commutative solitons.

Abstract:We present a collection of eight data sets from state-of-the-art experiments and numerical simulations on turbulent velocity statistics along particle trajectories obtained in different flows with Reynolds numbers in the range R{lambda}in[120:740]. Lagrangian structure functions from all data sets are found to collapse onto each other on a wide range of time lags, pointing towards the existence of a universal behavior, within present statistical convergence, and calling for a unified theoretical description. Parisi-Frisch multifractal theory, suitably extended to the dissipative scales and to the Lagrangian domain, is found to capture the intermittency of velocity statistics over the whole three decades of temporal scales investigated here.

Abstract:A detailed comparison between data from experimental measurements and numerical simulations of Lagrangian velocity structure functions in turbulence is presented. Experimental data, at Reynolds number ranging from Rλ=350 to Rλ=815, are obtained in a swirling water flow between counter-rotating baffled disks. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) data, up to Rλ=284, are obtained from a statistically homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow. By integrating information from experiments and numerics, a quantitative understanding of the velocity scaling properties over a wide range of time scales and Reynolds numbers is achieved. To this purpose, we discuss in detail the importance of statistical errors, anisotropy effects, and finite volume and filter effects, finite trajectory lengths. The local scaling properties of the Lagrangian velocity increments in the two data sets are in good quantitative agreement for all time lags, showing a degree of intermittency that changes if measured close to the Kolmogorov time scales or at larger time lags. This systematic study resolves apparent disagreement between observed experimental and numerical scaling properties.
Identifying dominant flow features from very-sparse Lagrangian data: a multiscale recurrence network-based approach

Abstract:Realistic fluid flow problems often require that Lagrangian tracers are deployed in a sparse or very-sparse manner, such as for oceanic and atmospheric flows where large-scale motion needs characterisation. Data sparsity represents a significant issue in Lagrangian analysis, especially for data-driven methods that rely heavily on large datasets. We propose a multiscale spatial recurrence network (MSRN) methodology for characterising very-sparse Lagrangian data, which exploits individual tracks and a spatial recurrence criterion to identify the spatio-temporal complexity of tracer trajectories. The MSRN is an unsupervised modelling framework that does not require a priori parameter setting, and—through the quantification of persistent link activation at specific trajectory intervals—can reveal the presence of dominant looping scales in a variety of salient fluid flows. This new paradigm is shown to be successful for the study of Lagrangian tracers seeded in complex (realistic) flows, including unsteady and advection-dominated problems. This makes MSRNs an effective and versatile tool to characterise sensor trajectories in key problems such as environmental processes critical to understanding and mitigating climate change.

Spatio-temporal fluctuations of interscale and interspace energy transfer dynamics in homogeneous turbulence

Abstract:We study fluctuations of all co-existing energy exchange/transfer/transport processes in stationary periodic turbulence including those which average to zero and are not present in average cascade theories. We use a Helmholtz decomposition of accelerations which leads to a decomposition of all terms in the Kármán-Howarth-Monin-Hill (KHMH) equation (scale-by-scale two-point energy balance) causing it to break into two energy balances, one resulting from the integrated two-point vorticity equation and the other from the integrated two-point pressure equation. The various two-point acceleration terms in the Navier-Stokes difference (NSD) equation for the dynamics of two-point velocity differences have similar alignment tendencies with the two-point velocity difference, implying similar characteristics for the NSD and KHMH equations. We introduce the two-point sweeping concept and show how it articulates with the fluctuating interscale energy transfer as the solenoidal part of the interscale transfer rate does not fluctuate with turbulence dissipation at any scale above the Taylor length but with the sum of the time-derivative and the solenoidal interspace transport rate terms. The pressure fluctuations play an important role in the interscale and interspace turbulence transfer/transport dynamics as the irrotational part of the interscale transfer rate is equal to the irrotational part of the interspace transfer rate and is balanced by two-point fluctuating pressure work. We also study the homogeneous/inhomogeneous decomposition of interscale transfer. The statistics of the latter are skewed towards forward cascade events whereas the statistics of the former are not. We also report statistics conditioned on intense forward/backward interscale transfer events.

The Role of Variability in Transport for Large-Scale Flow Dynamics

Abstract:We develop a framework to study the role of variability in transport across a streamline of a reference flow. Two complementary schemes are presented: a graphical approach for individual cases, and an analytical approach for general properties. The spatially nonlinear interaction of dynamic variability and the reference flow results in flux variability. The characteristic time-scale of the dynamic variability and the length-scale of the flux variability in a unit of flight-time govern the spatio-temporal interaction that leads to transport. The non-dimensional ratio of the two characteristic scales is shown to be a a critical parameter. The pseudo-lobe sequence along the reference streamline describes spatial coherency and temporal evolution of transport. For finite-time transport from an initial time up to the present, the characteristic length-scale of the flux variability regulates the width of the pseudo-lobes. The phase speed of pseudo-lobe propagation averages the reference flow and the flux variability. In contrast, for definite transport over a fixed time interval and spatial segment, the characteristic time-scale of the dynamic variability regulates the width of the pseudo-lobes. Generation of the pseudo-lobe sequence appears to be synchronous with the dynamic variability, although it propagates with the reference flow. In either case, the critical characteristic ratio is found to be one, corresponding to a resonance of the flux variability with the reference flow. Using a kinematic model, we demonstrate the framework for two types of transport in a blocked flow of the mid-latitude atmosphere: across the meandering jet axis and between the jet and recirculating cell.
