Abstract:In this paper, we study the rigidity problem on closed locally conformally flat manifolds with constant k-curvature or constant quotient curvature. We prove that such manifolds must have constant sectional curvature under the assumption that the manifolds have positive sectional curvature. The same result is also held on closed locally conformally flat manifolds with totally geodesic boundary.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.
Rational curves on Hermitian manifolds

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:In this paper, we define the generalized Bertrand curves of non-light-like framed curves in Lorentz–Minkowski 3-space; their study is essential for understanding many classical and modern physics problems. Here, we consider two non-light-like framed curves as generalized Bertrand pairs. Our generalized Bertrand pairs can include Bertrand pairs with either singularities or not, and also include Mannheim pairs with singularities. In addition, we discuss their properties and prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for two non-light-like framed curves to be generalized Bertrand pairs.

Abstract:This paper concerns (Lorentz-)Darboux transformations in the Lorentz-Minkowski plane $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}$. We use the Penrose diagram for conformal compactification and show some unique properties of Darboux transformations of spacelike curves in $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}$, especially with regard to singularities and blowup. Finally, we make some comments on Darboux transformation of type-changing curves.

Abstract:We study geometry on curves passing through a Whitney umbrella by using a Darboux frame along it. We define three invariants by using Frenet-Serre type formula relating to the geodesic curvature, the normal curvature, and the geodesic torsion. We investigate the degrees of divergence and the top-terms of these invariants and their geometric meanings. We also consider a developable surface along the curve.

Abstract:A Bertrand curve in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space is a space curve whose first normal line is the same as the first normal line of another curve. On the other hand, a Mannheim curve in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space is a space curve whose first normal line is the same as the second or third normal line of another curve. In this paper, we investigate not only Bertrand and Mannheim curves of regular space curves, but also Bertrand and Mannheim curves of singular space curves. As singular curves, we consider framed curves. We give conditions for framed curves to become Bertrand and Mannheim curves. It is well-known that the Bertrand curves of regular curves do not exist under a condition in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space. However, even for regular curves, Bertrand curves exist as framed curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate sufficient condition for the invariance of a rectifying curve on a smooth surface immersed in Euclidean 3-space under isometry by using Darboux frame $\left\lbrace T, P, U\right\rbrace$. Further, we find the deviations of the position vector of a rectifying curve on the smooth surface along any tangent vector $T = a\phi_u + b\phi_v$ with respect to the isometry. We also find the deviations of the position vector of a rectifying curve on the smooth surface along the unit normal $U$ to the surface and along $P (= U \times T)$ with respect to the isometry.

Abstract:A Bertrand (respectively, Mannheim) curve is a space curve whose principal normal line is the same as the principal normal (respectively, bi-normal) line of another curve. By definition, another curve is a parallel curve with respect to the direction of the principal normal vector. In this paper, we consider the other cases, that is, a space curve whose tangent (or, principal normal, bi-normal) line is the same as the tangent (or, principal normal, bi-normal) line of another curve, respectively. We say that a Bertrand type curve if there exists such another curve. We clarify that the existence conditions of Bertrand type curves in all cases. There are times when the Bertrand type curve does not exist. On the other hand, since the another curve may have singular points, we also consider curves with singular points. As smooth curves with singular points, it is useful to use the framed curves in the Euclidean space. Then we define and investigate Bertrand framed curves. We also clarify that the existence conditions of the Bertrand framed curves in all cases.

Curves and surfaces making a constant angle with a parallel transported direction in Riemannian spaces

Abstract:In the last two decades, much effort has been dedicated to studying curves and surfaces according to their angle with a given direction. However, most findings were obtained using a case-by-case approach, and it is often unclear what are consequences of the specificities of the ambient manifold and what could be generic. In this work, we propose a theoretical framework to unify parts of these findings. We study curves and surfaces by prescribing the angle they make with a parallel transported vector field. We show that the characterization of Euclidean helices in terms of their curvature and torsion is also valid in any Riemannian manifold. Among other properties, we prove that surfaces making a constant angle with a parallel transported direction are extrinsically flat ruled surfaces. We also investigate the relation between their geodesics and the so-called slant helices; we prove that surfaces of constant angle are the rectifying surface of a slant helix, i.e., the ruled surface with rulings given by the Darboux vector field of the directrix. We characterize rectifying surfaces of constant angle; in other words, when their geodesics are slant helices. As a corollary, we show that if every geodesic of a surface of constant angle is a slant helix, then the ambient manifold is flat. Finally, we characterize surfaces in the product of a Riemannian surface with the real line making a constant angle with the vertical real direction.

Abstract:We give a new characterisation of the unparametrised geodesics, or distinguished curves, for affine, pseudo-Riemannian, conformal, and projective geometry. This is a type of moving incidence relation. The characterisation is used to provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along the curves. The formalism immediately yields explicit formulae for these curve first integrals. The usual role of Killing tensors and conformal Killing tensors is recovered as a special case, but the construction shows that a significantly larger class of equation solutions also yield curve first integrals. In particular any normal solution to an equation from the class of first BGG equations can yield such a conserved quantity. For some equations the condition of normality is not required. For nowhere-null curves in pseudo-Riemannian and conformal geometry additional results are available. We provide a fundamental tractor-valued invariant of such curves and this quantity is parallel if and only if the curve is an unparametrised conformal circle.

Abstract:In this study, we determine a new type comprehensive frame, which is called the generalized Frenet‐type frame in three‐dimensional Lie groups with Myller configurations, and it includes several special and classical type frames for Euclidean 3‐space and three‐dimensional Lie groups. After constructing this new comprehensive frame, we obtain derivative formulas with the help of the Lie curvature. In addition, we define some special type curves. The geometry of versor fields along a curve with Frenet‐type frame in three‐dimensional Lie groups with Myller configurations is a generalization of the usual theory of curves. Since this particular relationship, the osculating‐type and rectifying‐type curves with Frenet‐type frame in three‐dimensional Lie groups with Myller configurations include some special cases for osculating and rectifying curves in different spaces.

Abstract:A space curve in a Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb E^3$ is called a rectifying curve if its position vector field always lies in its rectifying plane. This notion of rectifying curves was introduced by the author in [Amer. Math. Monthly {\bf 110} (2003), no. 2, 147-152]. In this present article, we introduce and study the notion of rectifying submanifolds in Euclidean spaces. In particular, we prove that a Euclidean submanifold is rectifying if and only if the tangential component of its position vector field is a concurrent vector field. Moreover, rectifying submanifolds with arbitrary codimension are completely determined.
