Abstract:The surface of Mercury is enriched in carbon compared with the other terrestrial bodies. Up to 4 wt% of carbon in the form of graphite has been invoked to explain its mysteriously low surface reflectance. However, the exact abundance and phase of carbon on Mercury were loosely constrained by orbital observations. Here we show that the oldest and darkest colour units on Mercury, comprising low-reflectance materials, consist of two spatially coherent subunits that do and do not have spectral characteristics attributed to graphite enrichment, respectively. We find from spectral modelling that a combination of less than 1 wt% of microcrystalline graphite and similar amounts of metallic iron is adequate for explaining the overall reflectances of various colour units on Mercury. Our results indicate that most carbon on Mercury may occur in forms other than intergrain graphite and that carbon did not entirely drain from the mantle during magma ocean crystallization.

Chromium on Mercury: New results from the MESSENGER X-Ray Spectrometer and implications for the innermost planet's geochemical evolution

Abstract:Mercury, the innermost planet, formed under highly reduced conditions, based mainly on surface Fe, S, and Si abundances determined from MESSENGER mission data. The minor element Cr may serve as an independent oxybarometer, but only very limited Cr data have been previously reported for Mercury. We report Cr/Si abundances across Mercury's surface based on MESSENGER X-Ray Spectrometer data throughout the spacecraft's orbital mission. The heterogeneous Cr/Si ratio ranges from 0.0015 in the Caloris Basin to 0.0054 within the high-magnesium region, with an average southern hemisphere value of 0.0008 (corresponding to about 200 ppm Cr). Absolute Cr/Si values have systematic uncertainty of at least 30%, but relative variations are more robust. By combining experimental Cr partitioning data along with planetary differentiation modeling, we find that if Mercury formed with bulk chondritic Cr/Al, Cr must be present in the planet's core and differentiation must have occurred at log fO2 in the range of IW-6.5 to IW-2.5 in the absence of sulfides in its interior, and a range of IW-5.5 to IW-2 with an FeS layer at the core-mantle boundary. Models with large fractions of Mg-Ca-rich sulfides in Mercury's interior are more compatible with moderately reducing conditions (IW-5.5 to IW-4) owing to the instability of Mg-Ca-rich sulfides at elevated fO2. These results indicate that if Mercury differentiated at a log fO2 lower than IW-5.5, the presence of sulfides whether in the form of a FeS layer at the top of the core or Mg-Ca-rich sulfides within the mantle would be unlikely.

Metastable Carbon at Extreme Conditions

Abstract:Carbon at extreme conditions is the focus of intensive scientific inquiry due to its importance for applications in inertial confinement fusion experiments and for understanding the interior structure of carbon-rich exoplanets. The extreme metastability of diamond at very high pressures has been discovered in recent dynamic compression experiments. This work addresses an important question about the existence of other competitive metastable carbon phases that might be observed in shock experiments. It was found that diamond polytypes, carbon crystals with mixed cubic and hexagonal diamond stacking planes, are the only metastable carbon crystal phases energetically competitive with cubic diamond at pressures between 100 and 1,000 GPa. Above 1 TPa, no metastable phases are found to be energetically competitive with thermodynamically stable BC8 and simple cubic phases. The existence of low enthalpy diamond polytypes suggests that they are likely candidates for metastable phases of carbon to appear upon shockwave loading of diamond.

Carbon Precipitation from Heavy Hydrocarbon Fluid in Deep Planetary Interiors

Abstract:The phase diagram of the carbon-hydrogen system is of great importance to planetary sciences, as hydrocarbons comprise a significant part of icy giant planets and are involved in reduced carbon-oxygen-hydrogen fluid in the deep Earth. Here we use resistively-and laser-heated diamond anvil cells to measure methane melting and chemical reactivity up to 80 GPa and 2,000 K. We show that methane melts congruently below 40 GPa. Hydrogen and elementary carbon appear at temperatures of >1,200 K, whereas heavier alkanes and unsaturated hydrocarbons (>24 GPa) form in melts of >1,500 K. The phase composition of carbon-hydrogen fluid evolves towards heavy hydrocarbons at pressures and temperatures representative of Earth's lower mantle. We argue that reduced mantle fluids precipitate diamond upon re-equilibration to lighter species in the upwelling mantle. Likewise, our findings suggest that geophysical models of Uranus and Neptune require reassessment because chemical reactivity of planetary ices is underestimated.

Abstract:Elucidating the structure and composition of Mercury is important for understanding its interior dynamics and evolution. The planet is characterised by unusual chemical characteristics and a weak magnetic field generated in a large metallic core, and its early evolution was also marked by the presence of a magnetic field, widespread volcanism and global contraction. Here we develop a parameterised model of coupled core-mantle thermal and magnetic evolution considering a layered Fe-Si(-S) core structure with chemical and physical properties of the mantle and the core based on previous laboratory studies. We seek successful solutions that are consistent with observations of Mercury's long-lived dynamo, total global contraction, present-day crustal thickness, and present-day interior structure. Successful solutions have a mantle reference viscosity >1021 Pa s (corresponding to a present-day bulk mantle viscosity >2×1020 Pa s), a silicon concentration in the core >13 wt%, a present inner core radius of ∼1000−1200 km and a thermally stable layer ∼ 500−800 km thick below the core-mantle boundary. Our results show that if present, a molten FeS layer atop the core has minimal effect on Mercury's long-term thermal and magnetic evolution. Predictions from our models can be tested with upcoming Bepi-Colombo observations.

Abstract:High resolution images of Mercury's surface, from the MESSENGER spacecraft, reveal many bright deposits associated with irregular, shallow, rimless depressions whose origins were attributed to volatile-related activity, but absent information on the nature and origin of that volatile matter. Here I describe planetary formation, unlike the cited models, and show that primordial condensation from an atmosphere of solar composition at pressures of one atmosphere or above will lead to iron condensing as a liquid and dissolving copious amounts of hydrogen, which is subsequently released as Mercury's core solidifies and escapes from the surface, yielding the observed pit-like features with associated highly-reflecting matter. The exiting hydrogen chemically reduces some iron compound, probably iron sulfide, to the metal, which accounts for the bright deposits.

Abstract:Sublithospheric diamonds and the inclusions they may carry crystallize in the asthenosphere, transition zone, or uppermost lower mantle (from 300 to ∼800 km), and are the deepest minerals so far recognized to form by plate tectonics. These diamonds are distinctive in their deformation features, low nitrogen content, and inclusions of these major mantle minerals: majoritic garnet, clinopyroxene, ringwoodite, CaSi perovskite, ferropericlase, and bridgmanite or their retrograde equivalents. The stable isotopic compositions of elements within these diamonds (δ 11 B, δ 13 C, δ 15 N) and their inclusions (δ 18 O, δ 56 Fe) are typically well outside normal mantle ranges, showing that these elements were either organic (C) or modified by seawater alteration (B, O, Fe) at relatively low temperatures. Metamorphic minerals in cold slabs are effective hosts that transport C as CO 3 and H as H 2 O, OH, or CH 4 below the island arc and mantle wedge. Warming of the slab generates carbonatitic melts, supercritical aqueous fluids, or metallic liquids, forming three types of sublithospheric diamonds. Diamond crystallization occurs by movement and reduction of mobile fluids as they pass through host mantle via fractures—a process that creates chemical heterogeneity and may promote deep focus earthquakes. Geobarometry of majoritic garnet inclusions and diamond ages suggest upward transport, perhaps to the base of mantle lithosphere. From there, diamonds are carried to Earth's surface by eruptions of kimberlite magma. Mineral assemblages in sublithospheric diamonds directly trace Earth's deep volatile cycle, demonstrating how the hydrosphere of a rocky planet can connect to its solid interior. ▪ Sublithospheric diamonds from the deep upper mantle, transition zone, and lower mantle host Earth's deepest obtainable mineral samples. ▪ Low-temperature seawater alteration of the ocean floor captures organic and inorganic carbon at the surface eventually to become some of the most precious gem diamonds. ▪ Subduction transports fluids in metamorphic minerals to great depth. Fluids released by slab heating migrate, react with host mantle to induce diamond crystallization, and may trigger earthquakes. ▪ Sublithospheric diamonds are powerful tracers of subduction—a plate tectonic process that deeply recycles part of Earth's planetary volatile budget. Mercury's crustal thickness correlates with lateral variations in mantle melt production

Abstract:Mercury's crust has a complex structure resulting from a billion years of volcanism. The surface variations in chemical composition have been identified from orbit by the spacecraft MESSENGER. Combining these measurements with laboratory experiments on partial melting, we estimate which variations in surface density and degree of mantle melting are required to produce surface rocks. If the surface density is representative of the deep crustal density, more than one half of crustal thickness variations in the northern hemisphere are explained by lateral variations in mantle melting. The crust is thin below the magnesium-poor Northern Volcanic Plains whereas the thickest crust is found in the magnesium-rich region located at mid-northern latitudes in the Western Hemisphere. The magnesium-rich region is thus not due to an early impact but rather to extensive mantle melting. The thickness-melting relation has also been observed for the oceanic crust on Earth and might be a common feature of terrestrial planets.

Natural Diamond Formation by Self-Redox of Ferromagnesian Carbonate

Abstract:Significance The presence of extra reducer was thought to be essential for producing natural diamonds from reduction of carbonates. The present study of the Xiuyan meteoritic crater, however, finds natural diamond formation via a subsolidus self-redox of a ferromagnesian carbonate during shock compression to 25–45 GPa and 800–900 °C without melting, fluid, and another reductant. The ability of carbonate to produce diamond by itself implies that diamond would be a very common mineral in the lower mantle where the carbonates are abundant and pressures and temperatures are sufficiently high. Formation of natural diamonds requires the reduction of carbon to its bare elemental form, and pressures (P) greater than 5 GPa to cross the graphite–diamond transition boundary. In a study of shocked ferromagnesian carbonate at the Xiuyan impact crater, we found that the impact pressure–temperature (P-T) of 25–45 GPa and 800–900 °C were sufficient to decompose ankerite Ca(Fe2+,Mg)(CO3)2 to form diamond in the absence of another reductant. The carbonate self-reduced to diamond by concurrent oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ to form a high-P polymorph of magnesioferrite, MgFe3+2O4. Discovery of the subsolidus carbonate self-reduction mechanism indicates that diamonds could be ubiquitously present as a dominant host for carbon in the Earth’s lower mantle.

Abstract:The pressure and temperature conditions at which precipitation of diamond occurs from hydrocarbon mixtures is important for modelling the interior dynamics of icy planets. However, there is substantial disagreement from laboratory experiments, with those using dynamic compression techniques finding much more extreme conditions are required than in static compression. Here we report the time-resolved observation of diamond formation from statically compressed polystyrene, (C 8 H 8 ) n , heated using the 4.5 MHz X-ray pulse trains at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser facility. Diamond formation is observed above 2,500 K from 19 GPa to 27 GPa, conditions representative of Uranus's and Neptune's shallow interiors, on 30 μs to 40 μs timescales. This is much slower than may be observed during the ∼ 10 ns duration of typical dynamic compression experiments, revealing reaction kinetics to be the reason for the discrepancy. Reduced pressure and temperature conditions for diamond formation has implications for icy planetary interiors, where diamond subduction leads to heating and could drive convection in the conductive ice layer that has a role in their magnetic fields.

Hpht Experiments on Diamond Crystallization Controlled by Mn-Chromite-Mn-Spinel-Hematite Equilibrium: Implications to Natural Diamonds in Ophiolites

Abstract:The relationship between podiform chromite deposits and micro-diamonds hosted in them, as well as the prevalent NiMnCo alloy inclusions found in micro-diamonds, remains enigmatic, but crucial to understanding their origin. Here we present a work where high temperature and high pressure (HPHT) experiments on diamond crystallization were conducted using NiMnCo-C-chromite as starting materials at similar to 5.5 GPa and similar to 1350 degrees C, in order to determine the relationship between unusual minerals, micro-diamonds, metal alloys, and podiform chromite deposits. The mineral assemblage determined on the quenched blocks shows that melting Mn reacts preferentially with Fe-IV(2+) in chromite, forming MnCr2O4 spinel and hematite (MCMH). Increasing the content of chromite from 0 wt% to 62 wt% in the NiMnCo-C system, the oxygen fugacity (f(O2)) controlled by the MCMH equilibrium increases from FMQ-1.1 (similar to NNO) to FMQ-0.2 (>CCO). The increased fO(2) value would cause reduced efficiency in transforming graphite in diamond (EGr-Dia), reduced particle size, and increased nitrogen and oxygen impurities in diamond crystal structures. A comparable mineral assemblage of NiMnCo alloy, hematite, and Mn-spinel inclusions in diamonds hosted in ophiolites suggests that MCMH equilibrium may occur in the deep upper mantle and diamonds may crystallize as the following model: 1. The MCMH reaction occurs when chromites carried by deep mantle upwelling interact with the upper NiMnCo alloy during migration; 2. Diamond rapidly crystallizes in a non-equilibrium environment due to gradually saturated carbon and suitable oxygen fugacity controlled by the MCMH equilibrium; 3. Diamond grains and phases of MCMH are captured and then transported to the upper mantle or surface by chromite or mantle peridotites during later mantle upwelling. This model may account for the variable diamond amount found in ophiolitic chromitites.
Equilibrium Condensation from Chondritic Porous IDP Enriched Vapor: Implications for Mercury and Enstatite Chondrite Origins

Abstract:The origin of Mercury's anomalous core and low FeO surface mineralogy are outstanding questions in planetary science. Mercury's composition may result from cosmochemical controls on the precursor solids that accreted to form Mercury. High temperatures and enrichment in solid condensates are likely conditions near the midplane of the inner solar protoplanetary disk. Silicate liquids similar to the liquids quenched in ferromagnesian chondrules are thermodynamically stable in oxygen-rich systems that are highly enriched in dust of CI-chondrite composition. In contrast, the solids surviving into the orbit of Mercury's accretion zone were probably similar to highly unequilibrated, anhydrous, interstellar organic- and presolar grain-bearing chondritic, porous interplanetary dust particles (C-IDPs). Chemical systems enriched in an assumed C-IDP composition dust produce condensates (solid + liquid assemblages in equilibrium with vapor) with super-chondritic atomic Fe/Si ratios at high temperatures, approaching 50% of that estimated for bulk Mercury. Sulfur behaves as a refractory element, but at lower temperatures, in these chemical systems. Stable minerals are FeO-poor, and include CaS and MgS, species found in enstatite chondrites. Disk gradients in volatile compositions of planetary and asteroidal precursors can explain Mercury's anomalous composition, as well as enstatite chondrite and aubrite parent body compositions. This model predicts high sulfur content, and very low FeO content of Mercury's surface rocks.

The Elusive Origin of Mercury

Abstract:The MESSENGER mission sought to discover what physical processes determined Mercury's high metal to silicate ratio. Instead, the mission has discovered multiple anomalous characteristics about our innermost planet. The lack of FeO and the reduced oxidation state of Mercury's crust and mantle are more extreme than nearly all other known materials in the solar system. In contrast, moderately volatile elements are present in abundances comparable to the other terrestrial planets. No single process during Mercury's formation is able to explain all of these observations. Here, we review the current ideas for the origin of Mercury's unique features. Gaps in understanding the innermost regions of the solar nebula limit testing different hypotheses. Even so, all proposed models are incomplete and need further development in order to unravel Mercury's remaining secrets.

Abstract:Recent diamond-anvil cell experiments are providing windows of unprecedented clarity on the interiors of the Earth, other planets, and their moons from high P-T studies of the materials that comprise these bodies. With recent advances in techniques, the component minerals can be examined with a growing array of in situ methods over an expanding range of conditions that extend to hundreds of gigaspascals in pressure and thousands of degrees in temperature. Such investigations reveal that major, if not profound, changes in physical and chemical properties of these materials occur with depth. This information is crucial for understanding the materials basis of regional to global structure and processes documented by a wealth of recent observational and geophysical data. This paper reviews selected recent studies of major planet-forming minerals, focusing on key examples that illustrate different microscopic origins of macroscopic behaviour. This comparative mineralogical approach provides insight into phenomena occurring over a wide range of length scales. For terrestrial planets, the high-pressure behaviour of representative silicates, oxides and sulphides is examined. This includes the silicate perovskite assemblages that form the bulk of the Earth's lower mantle, for which a number of new findings concerning effects of non-stoichiometry and defect properties, pressure-induced electronic and magnetic transitions, and theology have been obtained. High P-T studies of Fe-Ni alloys, together with various light elements, provide constraints on the composition, structure and dynamics of terrestrial planet cores. Water is a key component of many planetary bodies; as ice it undergoes numerous high-pressure transformations and as a volatile component it is involved in potentially important high P-T mineral reactions and is incorporated in dense mineral phases. Striking behaviour is observed in other molecular systems, including CO2 and CH4 and their mixtures with H2O; these form new phases, some relevant at the relatively modest conditions of deep marine sediments, others at the extreme states found in the deepest planetary interiors. Additional high P-T interactions between rare gases and ices and silicates are also documented. For the large planets, the most abundant 'mineral' is hydrogen, which has been shown to undergo novel mineral/gas reactions, possibly in cloud decks deep within the dense atmospheres of these bodies.

Abstract:Rocky planets in our Solar System, namely Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and the Moon, which is generally added to this group due to its geological complexity, possess a solid surface and share a common structure divided into major layers, namely a silicate crust, a silicate mantle, and an iron-rich core. However, while all terrestrial planets share a common structure, the thickness of their interior layers, their bulk chemical composition, and surface expressions of geological processes are often unique to each of them. In this chapter we provide an overview of the surfaces and interiors of rocky planets in the Solar System. We list some of the major discoveries in planetary exploration and discuss how they have helped to answer fundamental questions about planetary evolution while at the same time opening new avenues. For each of the major planetary layers, i.e., the surface, the crust and lithosphere, the mantle, and the core, we review key geological and geophysical processes that have shaped the planets that we observe today. Understanding the similarities and differences between the terrestrial planets in the Solar System will teach us about the diversity of evolutionary paths a planet could follow, helping us to better understand our own home, the Earth.

Abstract:The storage of carbon in Earth’s mantle is an important consideration within the framework of the deep carbon cycle. In the deep (>250 km depth) reduced mantle, carbon storage mechanisms differ greatly from those in the oxidized shallow mantle. To investigate the stability of carbon-bearing phases in Earth’s deep mantle, we experimentally constrained compositional effects on phase stability in the Fe-Ni-S-C system at conditions relevant to the deep upper mantle and mantle transition zone. Our experiments suggest that carbide is absent at 10 GPa and 1450 °C in the Ni-poor (molar Ni/(Ni + Fe) = 0.2) portion of the metal-sulfide-carbon ternary, with carbon occurring as diamond or dissolved in the Fe-Ni-S-C melt. At 19 GPa and 1450 and 1600 °C, (Fe,Ni)7C3 saturates in the melt with C-rich (4.78–9.47 wt%), S-poor (2.29–6.98 wt%) bulk compositions. In comparison, Fe-Ni alloy only saturates with the C- and S-poor bulk composition of 77.88 wt% Fe, 19.47 wt% Ni, 1.93 wt% S, and 0.72 wt% C. Based on these results, we trained machine learning models to predict carbon solubility in Fe-Ni-S-C melts. Compared to classical regression models, machine learning models significantly improve the accuracy of carbon solubility predictions. Combined, our experimental and machine learning results suggest that diamond and Fe-Ni-S-C melt are the primary hosts of carbon in the convecting deep upper mantle and throughout most of the mantle transition zone. In the deepest parts of the transition zone, however, carbide is likely to precipitate at adiabatic temperatures in C-rich mantle sources.

Oxidation of the Interiors of Carbide Exoplanets

Abstract:Astrophysical measurements have shown that some stars have sufficiently high carbon-to-oxygen ratios such that the planets they host would be mainly composed of carbides instead of silicates. We studied the behavior of silicon carbide in the presence of water under the high pressure-temperature conditions relevant to planetary interiors in the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (LHDAC). When reacting with water, silicon carbide converts to silica (stishovite) and diamond at pressures up to 50 GPa and temperatures up to 2500 K: SiC + 2H$_2$O -> SiO$_2$ + C + 2H$_2$. Therefore, if water can be incorporated into carbide planets during their formation or through later delivery, they could be oxidized and have mineralogy dominated by silicates and diamond in their interiors. The reaction could produce CH$_4$ at shallower depths and H$_2$ at greater depths which could be degassed from the interior, causing the atmospheres of the converted carbon planets to be rich in reducing gases. Excess water after the reaction can be stored in dense silica polymorphs in the interiors of the converted carbon planets. Such conversion of mineralogy to diamond and silicates would decrease the density of carbon-rich planet, making the converted planets distinct from silicate planets in mass-radius relations for the 2-8 Earth mass range.

Abstract:Abstract Much of Earth’s carbon is thought to have been stripped away from the silicate mantle by dense metallic-iron to form the core1. However, recent studies2,3 suggest that a considerable part of it could have remained stranded in the deep mantle due to a change in its affinity to dissolve into iron metal-alloys at the extreme pressures and temperatures of the deep Earth. The underlying physical phenomena that would render carbon less siderophile at extreme conditions remain elusive. Here we describe the compaction mechanisms and structural evolution of a simple carbonate glass to deep mantle pressures by monitoring the evolution of the electronic state and atomic structure of the glass upon compression. Our new experiments demonstrate a pressure-induced change in hybridization of carbon from sp2 to sp3 starting at 40 GPa, due to the conversion of [3]CO32- groups into [4]CO44- units, which is completed at ~112 GPa. The pressure-induced increase of carbon coordination number from three to four increases possibilities for carbon-oxygen interactions with lower mantle silicates and increased compatibility4,5. Tetracarbonate melts provide a mechanism for changing the presumed siderophile nature of deep carbon and instead imply storage of carbon in the deep mantle as a possible source for carbon-rich emissions registered at the surface in intra-plate and near-ridge hot spots6,7
Thickness of Lava Flows Within the Northern Smooth Plains on Mercury As Estimated by Partially Buried Craters

Abstract:Partially and completely buried impact craters are widely distributed over the northern smooth plains of Mercury. Using imagery data acquired from the MESSENGER mission, we compiled a database of 257 partially buried and 765 completely buried craters on Mercury. The elevation profiles of fresh craters were constructed, and by inputting these into a topographic degradation model, we estimated the lava flow thicknesses around partially buried craters. Along the edges of the northern smooth plains, lava flow thicknesses were inverted to be 23-536 m with a median of 228 m. Lava flow thicknesses on Mercury are twice that on the Moon, possibly due to a denser crust on Mercury that favors the ascent of magmas or to higher production rates of magmas. The topographic diffusivity used for crater degradation on Mercury is 3 times that for lunar craters, which is likely a result of a higher cratering rate on Mercury.

Abstract:Diamonds form in a variety of environments between subducted crust, lithospheric and deep mantle. Recently, deep source diamonds with inclusions of the high-pressure H2O-phase ice-VII were discovered. By correlating the pressures of ice-VII inclusions with those of other high-pressure inclusions, we assess quantitatively the pressures and temperatures of their entrapment. We show that the iceVII-bearing diamonds formed at depths down to 800 +/- 60 km but at temperatures 200-500 K below average mantle temperature that match the pressure-temperature conditions of decomposing dense hydrous mantle silicates. Our work presents strong evidence for coupled recycling of water and carbon in the deep mantle based on natural samples.
