Abstract:The impressive † Oncorhynchus rastrosus of the Pacific Northwest's Miocene and Pliocene eras was the largest salmonid ever to live. It sported a hypertrophied premaxilla with a pair of enlarged teeth which the original describers reconstructed as projecting ventrally into the mouth, leading them to assign the species to " Smilodonichthys ," a genus now in synonymy. Through CT reconstruction of the holotype and newly collected specimens, we demonstrate that the famed teeth projected laterally like tusks, not ventrally like sabers or fangs. We also expand the original description to characterize sexual dimorphism in mature, breeding individuals. Male and female † Oncorhynchus rastrosus differ in the form of the vomer, rostro-dermethmoid-supraethmoid, and dentary, much as do other extant species of Oncorhynchus . Male specimens possess a more elongate vomer than do females, and female vomers have concave ventral surfaces and prominent median dorsal keels. The dentary of females has no evidence of a kype, though some specimens of † O . rastrosus have a non-uniform density mesial to the tooth bed, which we interpret as a male kype. Unlike extant Oncorhynchus , male and female † O . rastrosus do not differ in premaxilla shape. Because male and females possess hypertrophied premaxillae and lateral premaxillary spikes, the former common name "Sabertoothed Salmon" no longer reflects our understanding of the species' morphology. Accordingly, we redub † O . rastrosus the Spike-Toothed Salmon and postulate that its spikes were multifunctional, serving as defense against predators, in agonism against conspecifics, and as a practical aid to nest construction.

Hypercanines: Not just for sabertooths

Abstract:Hypercanines are here defined as hypertrophied caniniform teeth, that is, canine teeth that are elongated to serve specific functions in different clades of mammals and their synapsid ancestors. This article presents an overview of the occurrence of hypercanines, their growth, and their function across a broad range of clades. Sabertooth felids and felid‐like taxa are found to be unique in having determinate growth (although some Dinocerata may also have this). The most common function of hypercanines among herbivores is found to be sexual display and male–male competition. Three clades of small ruminants have evolved hypercanines that can move within their sockets, although the evolutionary details behind this convergent adaptation have not been worked out.

Abstract:Abstract Aquatic biodiversity changed dramatically at the start of the Paleogene. Although comparatively little is known about global freshwater ecosystems that appeared just after the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction, available data suggest that they were buffered from the worst effects of the extinction event. Here, we describe a nearly complete skeleton of a large-bodied ray-finned fish from a wetland ecosystem that existed fewer than 10 Myr after the end-Cretaceous extinction in western North America. With a maximum length likely exceeding 2 m, †Amia basiloides sp. nov. is one of the largest species in Holostei, a once species-rich clade of ray-finned fishes now survived by the nine living species of gars and bowfins. High-resolution computed tomography scans illuminate the anatomy of †A. basiloides and suggest it was an analogue of living large-bodied, piscivorous freshwater fishes found in the Southern Hemisphere and southern North America. When considered in a phylogenetic context, †A. basiloides shows that close relatives of living bowfins rapidly achieved gigantism in the Early Paleogene of North America after the largest members of an ancient clade closely related to bowfins went extinct. Although the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary likely induced turnover of freshwater vertebrate predatory guilds, holostean faunas remained ecologically comparable across the extinction due to exceptionally fast episodes of convergence.

Abstract:Abstract Osteoglossid bonytongues (arapaimas, arowanas, and relatives) are extant tropical freshwater fishes with a relatively abundant and diverse fossil record. Most osteoglossid fossils come from a 25-million-year interval in the early Palaeogene, when these fishes were distributed worldwide in both freshwater and marine environments. Despite their biogeographic and palaeoecological relevance, and a relative abundance of well-preserved material, the evolutionary relationships between these Palaeogene forms and extant bonytongues remain unclear. Here we describe a new genus of bonytongue from early Eocene marine deposits of Morocco, represented by an articulated, three-dimensionally preserved skull with associated pectoral girdle. This taxon is characterized by an elongated snout, contrasting with the short jaws usually found in marine representatives of the clade. A revision of morphological characters in bonytongues allows us to place this new genus, together with other marine and freshwater Eocene taxa, within crown osteoglossids and closely related to extant arapaimines. The discovery of the new Moroccan taxon hints at a previously underestimated eco-morphological diversity of marine bonytongues, highlighting the diverse trophic niches that these fishes occupied in early Palaeogene seas.

Abstract:Biting is a common male–male combat tactic across jawed vertebrates, in which teeth or bony beaks serve as weapons. Because biting can cause severe injuries in some species, bite scars provide critical information about the degrees and patterns of fights. Amphibians have a remarkable diversity in tooth morphology and arrangement. However, the functional ecology of amphibian teeth is poorly studied. For example, unlike aquatic suction‐feeding frogs that lost teeth, aquatic salamanders that suction‐feed prey retain numerous sharp teeth, suggesting that teeth as weapons may partially explain their retention. Here, we analysed long‐term injury records of one of the fully aquatic, suction‐feeding salamanders (Japanese Giant Salamander, Andrias japonicus) to examine the previously unexplored potential of amphibian teeth as weapons for male–male combat. The majority of the injuries were missing toes and limbs, which most likely occurred during intra‐specific combat. We explored associations between injuries and independent variables such as sex, body size, body condition and stream sections. We also investigated possible injury‐pattern biases along the lateral (i.e. right vs. left) and longitudinal (i.e. anterior vs. posterior) axes, which could reveal how these animals fight. We found that males had more injuries, larger individuals had more injuries, and males with poorer conditions had more injuries. There was no association between injuries and stream sections. In addition, we found that salamanders had more injuries on the right and posterior sides of the body. The lateral asymmetry in injuries is likely associated with turning asymmetry during combat. Our results revealed the intense male–male combats of giant salamanders, providing evidence of the use of teeth as weapons. Combats via biting in amphibians may be much more common and severe than currently known. Our research suggests the function of amphibian teeth as weapons, which is likely to be a vital selective agent shaping its remarkable diversity.

Distinct Predatory Behaviors in Scimitar- and Dirk-Toothed Sabertooth Cats

Abstract:Over the Cenozoic, large cat-like forms have convergently evolved into specialized killers of "megaherbivores" that relied on their large, and laterally compressed (saber-like) canines to rapidly subdue their prey [1-5]. Scimitar- and dirk-toothed sabertooths are distinct ecomorphs that differ in canine tooth length, degree of serration, and postcranial features indicative of dissimilar predatory behavior [6-13]. Despite these differences, it is assumed that they used a similar "canine-shear" bite to kill their prey [14, 15]. We investigated the killing behavior of the scimitar-toothed Homotherium serum and the dirk-toothed Smilodon fatalis using a comparative sample of living carnivores and a new quantitative approach to the analysis of skull function. For the first time, we quantified differences in the relative amount and distribution of cortical and trabecular bone in coronal sections of skulls to assess relative skull stiffness and flexibility [16-19]. We also use finite element analysis to simulate various killing scenarios that load skulls in ways that likely favor distinct proportions of cortical versus trabecular bone across the skull. Our data reveal that S. fatalis had an extremely thick skull and relatively little trabecular bone, consistent with a large investment in cranial strength for a stabbing canine-shear bite. However, H. serum had more trabecular bone and most likely deployed an unusual predatory behavior more similar to the clamp-and-hold technique of the lion than S. fatalis. These data broaden the killing repertoire of sabertooths and highlight the degree of ecological specialization among members of the large carnivore guild during the Late Pleistocene of North America.

Abstract:Very large unidentified elongate and rounded fossil bone segments of uncertain origin recovered from different Rhaetian (Late Triassic) fossil localities across Europe have been puzzling the paleontological community since the second half of the 19th century. Different hypotheses have been proposed regarding the nature of these fossils: (1) giant amphibian bones, (2) dinosaurian or other archosaurian long bone shafts, and (3) giant ichthyosaurian jaw bone segments. We call the latter proposal the ‘Giant Ichthyosaur Hypothesis’ and test it using bone histology. In presumable ichthyosaur specimens from SW England (Lilstock), France (Autun), and indeterminate cortical fragments from Germany (Bonenburg), we found a combination of shared histological features in the periosteal cortex: an unusual woven-parallel complex of strictly longitudinal primary osteons set in a novel woven-fibered matrix type with intrinsic coarse collagen fibers (IFM), and a distinctive pattern of Haversian substitution in which secondary osteons often form within primary ones. The splenial and surangular of the holotype of the giant ichthyosaur Shastasaurus sikanniensis from Canada were sampled for comparison. The results of the sampling indicate a common osteohistology with the European specimens. A broad histological comparison is provided to reject alternative taxonomic affinities aside from ichthyosaurs of the very large bone segment. Most importantly, we highlight the occurrence of shared peculiar osteogenic processes in Late Triassic giant ichthyosaurs, reflecting special ossification strategies enabling fast growth and achievement of giant size and/or related to biomechanical properties akin to ossified tendons.

Mallomonas gigantica sp. nov., an Eocene synurophyte possessing the largest known siliceous scales

Abstract:A new fossil species representing the genus Mallomonas , M . gigantica , is described from the Giraffe Pipe Eocene maar lake locality situated near the Arctic Circle in northern Canada. The new species possesses rolled bristles and two basic types of scales that lack V-ribs, body scales and specialized apical scales. Mallomonas gigantica possesses the largest body scales reported for the genus, including for both fossil and contemporary taxa. Scales reached 12 μm in length and with a surface area near 100 μm 2 . Body scales are large, square-shaped, with a narrow posterior rim, large and thick anterior submarginal ribs, and a shallow dome with a curved margin that aids in securing the bristle. Base plate pores are small, and closely spaced over the scale surface except under the anterior submarginal ribs and dome. Specialized apical scales are smaller, more circular, asymmetric, and with a forward-projecting spine. The craspedodont bristles, have an open slit running the length of the shaft, an expanded and flat foot, and a row of small teeth lining the apex of the shaft. Although the scale structure is distinctly different, some features of the scales and bristles are most closely related to the fossil species M . schumachii , another taxon with large scales described from the same fossil locality. Given the lack of a V-rib, M . gigantica may represent a stem taxon of section Planae , but similarities with species in the modern section Punctiferae lineage are also discussed. The large, robust and heavy nature of the scales may have posed disadvantageous to the cell by making a slow swimmer more prone to sinking.

Long in the tooth: evolution of sabertooth cat cranial shape

Abstract:Sabertooths exhibit one of the most extreme feeding adaptations seen in mammals. The functional consequences of accommodating extremely elongate upper canine teeth are severe, resulting in a well-documented suite of cranial modifications. We used geometric morphometric methods to study the evolution of overall shape in the skulls of extant and extinct feline and machairodontine felids, as well as extinct nimravids. Trends in skull evolution were evaluated by using relative warps analysis and tested for association with body size and canine tooth length. Primitive sabertooths from all lineages exhibit cranial shapes more similar to conical-toothed cats, despite the presence of moderately developed saberteeth. More-derived forms in both nimravids and felids diverge in skull morphospace to form two distinct sabertooth types (dirk-toothed and scimitar-toothed) that differ in canine shape. Skull shape in conical-toothed cats is strongly associated with body size, but not canine length. However, within each sabertooth lineage, skull shape is significantly correlated with canine length, suggesting that gape-related demands drove the evolution of sabertooth skull morphology.

Modern cetaceans evolved their large size over tens of millions of years in response to the increased productivity of cold marine waters. However, whales were not the first marine giants to evolve. Sander et al . describe a 244-million-year-old fossil ichthyosaur that would have rivaled modern cetaceans in size (see the Perspective by Delsett and Pyenson). Abstract:The diagnosis of different fossil taxa in small collections from disparate geographical and temporal contexts is a common challenge in palaeontology. The likely number of morphospecies of the extinct sabretooth cat Megantereon is a classic example and subject of long-standing debate. While analyses of global fossil collections have provided insights and hypotheses, specimens from the foothills of the Himalaya—the Siwaliks—have been overlooked in recent treatments due to poor characterization and a confused taxonomic history. Here, this oversight is addressed. Craniodental fossils from the Siwaliks are revisited and their taxonomic status is reviewed. Morphological and metric characteristics are described, and qualitative and quantitative comparisons with congenerics are performed with published descriptions and datasets. The Lower Pleistocene Siwalik Megantereon are among the largest known forms in the genus. Advanced characteristics include reduced upper third premolars and long but comparatively narrow carnassial teeth. While dietary specialism can constrain morphological diversity, statistical analyses, including controls for body size effects, detected significant metric differences in the mandibles in comparison with congenerics. Within current paradigms, the status of Megantereon falconeri as a distinct morphospecies is upheld. A revised diagnosis is provided and the taxonomic affinities of M. falconeri are considered.

Abstract:Sabertoothed mammalian predators, all now extinct, were almost exclusively feloid carnivorans (Eutheria, Placentalia): here a couple of extinct metatherian predators are considered in comparison with the placental sabertooths. Thylacosmilus (the "marsupial sabertooth") and Thylacoleo (the "marsupial lion") were both relatively large (puma‐sized) carnivores of the Plio‐Pleistocene in the Southern Hemisphere (Argentina and Australia, respectively). Both carnivores have captured the public imagination, especially as predators that were somehow analogous to northern placental forms. But a more detailed consideration of their morphology shows that neither can be simply analogized with its supposed placental counterpart. While Thylacosmilus did indeed have saber‐like canines, many aspects of its anatomy show that it could not have killed prey in the manner proposed for the sabertoothed felids such as Smilodon. Rather than being an active predator, it may have been a specialized scavenger, using the hypertrophied canines to open carcasses, and perhaps deployed a large tongue to extract the innards. Thylacoleo lacked canines, and its supposedly "caniniform" incisors could not have acted like a felid's canines. Nevertheless, while its mode of dispatching its prey remains a subject for debate, it was clearly a powerful predator, likely to be capable of bringing down prey bigger than itself while hunting alone. In that regard, it may have filled the ecomorphological role proposed for placental sabertooths, and so despite the lack of canines can be nominated as the true "marsupial sabertooth" out of the two extinct taxa.

Static Scaling and the Evolution of Extreme Canine Size in a Saber-Toothed Cat (Smilodon fatalis)

Abstract:The canines of saber-toothed cats are a classic example of an extreme morphology, yet important questions pertaining to their evolution remain unanswered. Recent analyses suggest these structures functioned as tools of intrasexual combat where trait size acts as both a weapon of battle and signal of competitive ability. However, classic skeletal reconstructions suggest saber-tooth canines evolved as specialized hunting tools. Either scenario could have led to the evolution of extreme canine size and distinguishing between these hypotheses is therefore difficult. This is made more challenging by the fact that natural observation of saber-toothed cats is impossible, and biologists must rely on measures of static morphology to study the patterns of selection that favored extreme canine size. Here I analyze the static intraspecific scaling relationship between canine size and body size in the saber-toothed cat, Smilodon fatalis, to determine whether or not extreme canine size functioned as a sexually selected signal. I review the literature surrounding the evolution of sexually selected signals and the methods recently established by O'Brien et al. (2018), show how static scaling relationships can be useful, reliable tools for inferring patterns of selection, especially in fossil organisms, and provide evidence that extreme canine size in saber-toothed cats was not the product of selection for effective sexual signals, but instead evolved as either a pure intrasexually selected weapon or a hunting tool.
A new species of cow shark (Hexanchiformes: Hexanchidae) from the Late Cretaceous of Seymour Island, Antarctica

Abstract:A new Xampylodon species is described based on a distinguished fossil tooth from Antarctica. The specimen comes from the uppermost level of the informal unit 9 of the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) López de Bertodano Formation, 9 metres below the Cretaceous/Palaeogene boundary in Seymour Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Hexanchid sharks are relatively rare in this unit, being represented by only two species: Notidanodon pectinatus and Xampylodon dentatus . The new taxon exhibits a combination of dental features traditionally known in both Xampylodon and Notidanodon (e.g. teeth flattened labio-lingually and bearing well-developed mesial cusplets, followed by a large acrocone), but the presence of a deep root and a distally bent crown indicates a closer similarity with the former. As X . brotzeni and X . loozi , but unlike X. dentatus , the new taxon bears more than five mesial cusplets. Uniquely derived characters include the presence of a pronounced gap between mesial cusplet one and two and a pattern of non-continuous serial enlargement of the mesial cusplets. Incorporating this discovery into the spectrum of Antarctic shark diversity suggests a richness in the southern polar region at the end of the Mesozoic era that surpasses the already considerable previous assessments of diversity.

Abstract:The debate about the origin of the vertebrate dentition has been given fresh fuel by new fossil discoveries and developmental studies of extant animals. Odontodes (teeth or tooth-like structures) can be found in two distinct regions, the 'internal' oropharyngeal cavity and the 'external' skin. A recent hypothesis argues that regularly patterned odontodes is a specific oropharyngeal feature, whereas odontodes in the external skeleton lack this organization. However, this argument relies on the skeletal system of modern chondrichthyans (sharks and their relatives), which differ from other gnathostome (jawed vertebrate) groups in not having dermal bones associated with the odontodes. Their external skeleton is also composed of monoodontode 'placoid scales', whereas the scales of most early fossil gnathostomes are polyodontode, i.e. constructed from several odontodes on a shared bony base. Propagation phase contrast X-ray Synchrotron microtomography (PPC-SRµCT) is used to study the polyodontode scales of the early bony fish Andreolepis hedei. The odontodes constructing a single scale are reconstructed in 3D, and a linear and regular growth mechanism similar to that in a gnathostome dentition is confirmed, together with a second, gap-filling growth mechanism. Acanthodian tooth whorls are described, which show that ossification of the whorl base preceded and probably patterned the development of the dental lamina, in contrast to the condition in sharks where the dental lamina develops early and patterns the dentition.The new findings reveal, for the first time, how polyodontode scales grow in 3D in an extinct bony fish. They show that dentition-like odontode patterning occurs on scales and that the primary patterning unit of a tooth whorl may be the bony base rather than the odontodes it carries. These results contradict the hypothesis that oropharyngeal and external odontode skeletons are fundamentally separate and suggest that the importance of dermal bone interactions to odontode patterning has been underestimated.

Abstract:Giant ichthyosaurs with body length estimates exceeding 20 m were present in the latest Triassic of the UK. Here we report on the discovery of a second surangular from the lower jaw of a giant ichthyosaur from Somerset, UK. The new find is comparable in size and morphology to a specimen from Lilstock, Somerset, described in 2018, but it is more complete and better preserved. Both finds are from the uppermost Triassic Westbury Mudstone Formation (Rhaetian), but the new specimen comes from Blue Anchor, approximately 10 km west along the coast from Lilstock. The more complete surangular would have been >2 m long, from an individual with a body length estimated at ~25 m. The identification of two specimens with the same unique morphology and from the same geologic age and geographic location warrants the erection of a new genus and species, Ichthyotitan severnensis gen. et sp. nov. Thin sections of the new specimen revealed the same histological features already observed in similar giant ichthyosaurian specimens. Our data also supports the previous suggestion of an atypical osteogenesis in the lower jaws of giant ichthyosaurs. The geological age and giant size of the specimens suggest shastasaurid affinities, but the material is too incomplete for a definitive referral. Ichthyotitan severnensis gen. et sp. nov., is the first-named giant ichthyosaur from the Rhaetian and probably represents the largest marine reptile formally described.

Abstract:Chaetognaths, with their characteristic grasping spines, are the oldest known pelagic predators, found in the lowest Cambrian (Terreneuvian). Here, we describe a large stem chaetognath, Timorebestia koprii gen. et sp. nov., from the lower Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerstätte, which exhibits lateral and caudal fins, a distinct head region with long antennae and a jaw apparatus similar to Amiskwia sagittiformis . Amiskwia has previously been interpreted as a total-group chaetognathiferan, as either a stem-chaetognath or gnathostomulid. We show that T. koprii shares a ventral ganglion with chaetognaths to the exclusion of other animal groups, firmly placing these fossils on the chaetognath stem. The large size (up to 30 cm) and gut contents in T. koprii suggest that early chaetognaths occupied a higher trophic position in pelagic food chains than today.

Abstract:Sharks (Selachimorpha) are iconic marine predators that have survived multiple mass extinctions over geologic time. Their prolific fossil record is represented mainly by isolated shed teeth, which provide the basis for reconstructing deep time diversity changes affecting different selachimorph clades. By contrast, corresponding shifts in shark ecology, as measured through morphological disparity, have received comparatively limited analytical attention. Here, we use a geometric morphometric approach to comprehensively examine tooth morphologies in multiple shark lineages traversing the catastrophic end-Cretaceous mass extinction-this event terminated the Mesozoic Era 66 million years ago. Our results show that selachimorphs maintained virtually static levels of dental disparity in most of their constituent clades across the Cretaceous-Paleogene interval. Nevertheless, selective extinctions did impact apex predator species characterized by triangular blade-like teeth. This is particularly evident among lamniforms, which included the dominant Cretaceous anacoracids. Conversely, other groups, such as carcharhiniforms and orectolobiforms, experienced disparity modifications, while heterodontiforms, hexanchiforms, squaliforms, squatiniforms, and †synechodontiforms were not overtly affected. Finally, while some lamniform lineages disappeared, others underwent postextinction disparity increases, especially odontaspidids, which are typified by narrow-cusped teeth adapted for feeding on fishes. Notably, this increase coincides with the early Paleogene radiation of teleosts as a possible prey source, and the geographic relocation of disparity sampling "hotspots," perhaps indicating a regionally disjunct extinction recovery. Ultimately, our study reveals a complex morphological response to the end-Cretaceous mass extinction and highlights an event that influenced the evolution of modern sharks.
Suction causes novel tooth wear in marine mammals, with implications for feeding evolution in baleen whales

Abstract:Teeth are the primary tool used by most mammals to capture and process food. Over the lifetime of an individual, they progressively wear through contact with each other (attrition) and with food (abrasion), creating distinctive patterns that reflect function and diet. Unlike their terrestrial cousins, many marine mammals capture prey via suction, which so far has not been associated with a specific wear pattern. Here, we describe two new types of tooth wear across 18 species of modern marine mammal (beaked whales, belugas, killer whales, globicephalines, and various seals) that likely stem from this behaviour: "glossowear", which primarily affects the lingual side of the crown and plausibly records piston-like tongue movements during suction feeding; and "hydrowear", which wraps around the sides of the crown and occurs as water is expelled from the mouth. Both wear types differ from attrition and biting-related abrasion in their surface characteristics and location on the crown. Horizontal scratches suggest a physical wear process, rather than dental erosion (acid corrosion) and tooth abfraction (microfracture). Since suction specifically exploits the liquid properties of water, physical evidence of this behaviour may help to elucidate marine mammal feeding ecology and evolution. For example, glossowear is found in the toothed ancestors of baleen whales (mammalodontids, at least one aetiocetid, and likely Mystacodon ), where it suggests an important role for suction in the emergence of filter feeding. By contrast, it is absent in most long-snouted toothed whales and dolphins, indicating that these animals mostly bite, rather than suck in, their prey.

Abstract:The evolution of organisms can be studied through the lens of developmental systems, as the timing of development of morphological features is an important aspect to consider when studying a phenotype. Such data can be challenging to obtain in fossil amniotes owing to the scarcity of their fossil record. However, the numerous remains of Rancho La Brea allow a detailed study of the postnatal changes in an extinct sabertoothed felid: Smilodon fatalis. Despite numerous previous studies on the ontogeny of Smilodon, an important question remained open: how did the cubs of Smilodon acquire and process food? By applying 3D geometric morphometrics and finite element analyses to 49 mandibles at various developmental stages (22 of S. fatalis, 23 of Panthera leo, and 4 of early diverging felids), we assess the changes in mandibular shape and performance during growth. Both lions and sabertooths exhibit a shift in mandibular shape, aligning with eruption of the lower carnassial. This marks the end of weaning in lions and suggests a prolonged weaning period in S. fatalis owing to its delayed eruption sequence. We also highlight distinct ontogenetic trajectories, with S. fatalis undergoing more postnatal mandibular shape changes. Finally, although S. fatalis appears more efficient than P. leo at performing an anchor bite, this efficiency is acquired through ontogeny and at a quite late age. The delayed shape change compared with P. leo and the low biting efficiency during the growth in Smilodon could indicate an extended duration of the parental care compared with P. leo.
