Abstract:The removal of organic pollutants especially the antibiotics from wastewater discharge is now becoming very important to mankind. To remove these antibiotics from water in safe and sustainable manner, photocatalytic degradation can be a feasible strategy. Amongst different photocatalysts, coordination polymers (CPs) are now-a-days gaining attention as a new photocatalytic material. Herein, two coordination polymers derived from Ni(II) and Co(II) having compositions [Ni(HL)(4,4′-bipy)0.5·0.75H2O] (1) and [Co(HL)(phen)·H2O] (2) (H3L = 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl) picolinic acid, 4,4′-bipy = 4, 4′-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized and characterized. Both 1 and 2 have been used as photocatalysts to photodegrade varied antibiotics viz. nitrofurazone (NFZ), oxytetracycline (OXY), chloroamphenicol (CAP), metronidazole (MDZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMT), amongst which it exhibits best photodegradation of the metronidazole (MDZ) antibiotic. Experiments revealed that in comparison to 1, the CP 2 exhibited better photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of MDZ. A plausible photocatalytic degradation pathway has been proposed by radical tapping experiments and theoretical calculations.
