Abstract:A new pathway to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in high pressure diamond anvil cells is introduced, using inductively coupled broadband passive electro-magnetic lenses to locally amplify the magnetic flux at the isolated sample, leading to an increase in sensitivity. The lenses are adopted for the geometrical restrictions imposed by a toroidal diamond indenter cell, and yield high signal-to-noise ratios at pressures as high as 72 GPa, at initial sample volumes of only 230 pl. The corresponding levels of detection, LODt, are found to be up to four orders of magnitude lower compared to formerly used solenoidal micro-coils in diamond anvil cells, as shown by Proton-NMR measurements on paraffin oil. This approach opens up the field of ultra-high pressure sciences for one of the most versatile spectroscopic methods available in a pressure range unprecedended up to now.

Abstract:The past 15 years have seen an astonishing increase in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) sensitivity and accessible pressure range in high-pressure NMR experiments, owing to a series of new developments of NMR spectroscopy applied to the diamond anvil cell (DAC). Recently, with the application of electro-magnetic lenses, so-called Lenz lenses, in toroidal diamond indenter cells, pressures of up to 72 GPa with NMR spin sensitivities of about 10^12 spins/(Hz^1/2) has been achieved. Here, we describe the implementation of a refined NMR resonator structure using a pair of double stage Lenz lenses driven by a Helmholtz coil within a standard DAC, allowing to measure sample volumes as small as 100 pl prior to compression. With this set-up, pressures close to the mega-bar regime (1 Mbar = 100 GPa) could be realised repeatedly, with enhanced spin sensitivities of about 5x10^11 spin/(Hz^1/2). The manufacturing and handling of these new NMR-DACs is relatively easy and straightforward, which will allow for further applications in physics, chemistry, or biochemistry.

Abstract: The integration of NMR and high pressure technique brings unique opportunities to study electronic, structural and dynamical properties under extreme conditions. Despite a great degree of success has been achieved using coil-based schemes, the contradictory requirement on sample volume of these two techniques remains an outstanding challenge. In this letter, we introduce diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, as the source and probe of in-situ nuclear spin polarization, to address the sample volume issue. We demonstrate hyperpolarization and coherent control of $^{14}$N nuclear spins under high pressures. NMR spectra of a micro-diamond are measured up to 16.6 GPa, and unexpected pressure shift of the $^{14}$N nuclear quadrupole and hyperfine coupling terms are observed. Our work contributes to quantum sensing enhanced spectrometry under extreme conditions.

Abstract:High-resolution NMR measurements have been made at elevated pressures. Two separate modifications to a commercial NMR spectrometer are described; one involves a high-pressure NMR tube which rotates in the commercial NMR probe, and the other is a complete probe head containing a nonspinning high-pressure bomb. The relative advantages and disadvantages of both modifications are discussed and it is concluded that for measurements of volumes of activation, the nonspinning probe head is superior. As an example of the utility of this probe head, two determinations of volumes of activation using it are presented.

Abstract:Lanthanide Single‐Molecule Magnets are fascinating objects that break magnetic performance records with observable magnetic bistability at the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen, paving the way for potential applications in high‐density data storage. The switching of lanthanide SMM has been successfully achieved using several external stimuli such as redox reaction, pH titration, light irradiation or solvation/desolvation thanks to the high sensitivity of the magnetic anisotropy to any structural change in the lanthanide surrounding. Nevertheless, the use of applied high pressure as an external stimulus is largely underused, especially considering that it can be combined with high pressure X‐ray diffraction to establish a complementary structure‐property relationship. This Concept article summarizes the few relevant examples of investigations of lanthanide SMMs under applied high pressure, provides conclusions on the effect of such stimulus on molecular structures and magnetic anisotropy, and finally draws perspective on the future development of magnetic measurements under applied pressure.

Abstract:High pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is known to uncover behavior of matter at extreme conditions. However, significant maintenance demands, space requirements and high costs of superconducting magnets render its application unfeasible for regular modern high pressure laboratories. Here, we present a table-top NMR system based on permanent Halbach magnet arrays with dimensions of 25 cm diameter and 4 cm height. At the highest field of 1013 mT, 1H-NMR spectra of Ice VII have been recorded at 25 GPa and ambient temperature. The table-top NMR system can be used together with double sided laser heating set-ups. Feasibility of high-pressure high-temperature NMR was demonstrated by collecting 1H-NMR spectra of H2O at 25 GPa and 1063(50) K. We found that the change in signal intensity in laser-heated NMR diamond anvil cell yields a convenient way for temperature measurements.

Abstract:Pressure alters the physical, chemical and electronic properties of matter. The development of the diamond anvil cell (DAC) enables tabletop experiments to investigate a diverse landscape of high-pressure phenomena ranging from the properties of planetary interiors to transitions between quantum mechanical phases. In this work, we introduce and utilize a novel nanoscale sensing platform, which integrates nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers directly into the culet (tip) of diamond anvils. We demonstrate the versatility of this platform by performing diffraction-limited imaging (~600 nm) of both stress fields and magnetism, up to pressures ~30 GPa and for temperatures ranging from 25-340 K. For the former, we quantify all six (normal and shear) stress components with accuracy $<0.01$ GPa, offering unique new capabilities for characterizing the strength and effective viscosity of solids and fluids under pressure. For the latter, we demonstrate vector magnetic field imaging with dipole accuracy $<10^{-11}$ emu, enabling us to measure the pressure-driven $\alpha\leftrightarrow\epsilon$ phase transition in iron as well as the complex pressure-temperature phase diagram of gadolinium. In addition to DC vector magnetometry, we highlight a complementary NV-sensing modality using T1 noise spectroscopy; crucially, this demonstrates our ability to characterize phase transitions even in the absence of static magnetic signatures. By integrating an atomic-scale sensor directly into DACs, our platform enables the in situ imaging of elastic, electric and magnetic phenomena at high pressures.

Bullet pressure-cell design for neutron scattering experiments with horizontal magnetic fields and dilution temperatures

Abstract:The simultaneous application of high magnetic fields and high pressures for controlling magnetic ground states is important for testing our understanding of many-body quantum theory. However, the implementation for neutron scattering experiments presents a technical challenge. To overcome this challenge we present an optimized pressure-cell design with a novel bullet shape, which is compatible with horizontal-field magnets, in particular the high-field magnet operating at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The cell enabled neutron diffraction and spectroscopy measurements with the combination of three extreme conditions: high pressures, high magnetic fields, and dilution temperatures, simultaneously reaching 0.7 GPa, 25.9 T, and 200 mK. Our results demonstrate the utility of informed material choices and the efficiency of finite-element analysis for future pressure-cell designs to be used in combination with magnetic fields and dilution temperatures for neutron scattering purposes.

Abstract:A Lenz lens is an electrically passive conductive element that, when placed in a time-varying magnetic field, acts as a magnetic flux concentrator or a magnetic lens. In the realm of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Lenz lenses have been exploited as electrically passive metallic radiofrequency interposers placed between a sample and a tuned or untuned NMR detector in order to focus the -field of the detector onto a smaller sample space. Here we explore a novel embodiment of the Lenz lens, which acts as a non-resonant stripline interposer, i.e., the -field acts along the longitudinal volume of a sample container, such as a capillary or other microfluidic channel that is coincident with the axis of the stripline. The almost vanishing self-resonance of the stripline Lenz lens, at frequencies relevant for NMR, leads to a desirable -field amplitude that is nearly perfectly uniform across the sample and hence lacking a characteristic sinusoidal modal shape. The action of Lenz' law ensures that no stray -field is found outside of the stripline's active volume. Because the stripline Lenz lens does not rely on its own geometry to achieve resonance, its frequency response is thus widely broadband for field enhancements up to a factor of 11, with only the external driving resonator properties governing the overall resonant behaviour. We explore the use of the stripline Lenz lens with a sub-nanolitre sample volume, readily detecting 4 isotopes with resonances ranging from 125.76 to 500 MHz. The concept holds potential for the NMR study of thin films, small biological samples, as well as the in situ study of battery materials.

High-resolution neutron depolarization microscopy of the ferromagnetic transitions in Ni3Al and HgCr2Se4 under pressure

Abstract:We performed neutron imaging of ferromagnetic transitions in Ni3Al and HgCr2Se4 crystals. These neutron depolarization measurements revealed bulk magnetic inhomogeneities in the ferromagnetic transition temperature with spatial resolution of about 100 μm. To obtain such spatial resolution, we employed a novel neutron microscope equipped with Wolter mirrors as a neutron image-forming lens and a focusing neutron guide as a neutron condenser lens. The images of Ni3Al show that the sample does not homogeneously go through the ferromagnetic transition; the improved resolution allowed us to identify a distribution of small grains with slightly off-stoichiometric composition. Additionally, neutron depolarization imaging experiments on the chrome spinel, HgCr2Se4, under pressures up to 15 kbar highlight the advantages of the new technique especially for small samples or sample environments with restricted sample space. The improved spatial resolution enables one to observe domain formation in the sample while decreasing the acquisition time despite having a bulky pressure cell in the beam.

Abstract:By directly altering microscopic interactions, pressure provides a powerful tuning knob for the exploration of condensed phases and geophysical phenomena. The megabar regime represents an exciting frontier, where recent discoveries include novel high-temperature superconductors, as well as structural and valence phase transitions. However, at such high pressures, many conventional measurement techniques fail. Here, we demonstrate the ability to perform local magnetometry inside of a diamond anvil cell with sub-micron spatial resolution at megabar pressures. Our approach utilizes a shallow layer of Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color centers implanted directly within the anvil; crucially, we choose a crystal cut compatible with the intrinsic symmetries of the NV center to enable functionality at megabar pressures. We apply our technique to characterize a recently discovered hydride superconductor, CeH$_9$. By performing simultaneous magnetometry and electrical transport measurements, we observe the dual signatures of superconductivity: local diamagnetism characteristic of the Meissner effect and a sharp drop of the resistance to near zero. By locally mapping the Meissner effect and flux trapping, we directly image the geometry of superconducting regions, revealing significant inhomogeneities at the micron scale. Our work brings quantum sensing to the megabar frontier and enables the closed loop optimization of superhydride materials synthesis.

Abstract:Achieving a correlative measurement of both magnetic and atomic structures at the nanoscale is imperative to understand the fundamental magnetism of matters and for fostering the development of new magnetic nanomaterials. Conventional microscopy methods fall short in providing the two information simultaneously. Here, we develop a new approach to simultaneously map the magnetic field and atomic structure at the nanoscale using Lorentz 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (Ltz-4D-STEM). This method enables precise measurement of the characteristic atomic and magnetic structures across an extensive field of view, a critical aspect for investigating real-world ferromagnetic materials. It offers a comprehensive visualization and statistical evaluation of the different structural information at a pixel-by-pixel correlation. The new method allows to directly visualize the magnetoelastic coupling and the resulting complex magnetization arrangement as well as the competition between magnetoelastic and magnetostatic energy. This approach opens new avenues for in-depth studying the structure-property correlation of nanoscale magnetic materials.

High-Resolution NMR Spectroscopy at Large Fields with Nitrogen Vacancy Centers

Abstract:Ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are used as sensors to detect NMR signals from micron-sized samples at room temperature. In this scenario, the regime of large magnetic fields is especially interesting as it leads to a large nuclear thermal polarisation -- thus, to a strong sensor response even in low concentration samples -- while chemical shifts and J-couplings become more accessible. Nevertheless, this regime remains largely unexplored owing to the difficulties to couple NV-based sensors with high-frequency nuclear signals. In this work, we circumvent this problem with a method that maps the relevant energy shifts in the amplitude of an induced nuclear spin signal that is subsequently transferred to the sensor. This stage is interspersed with free-precession periods of the sample nuclear spins where the sensor does not participate. Thus, our method leads to high spectral resolutions ultimately limited by the coherence of the nuclear spin signal.

Abstract:We introduce the combination of nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy with the laser-heated diamond anvil cell technique for studying magnetic, elastic, thermodynamic, and vibrational properties of materials under high pressures and high temperatures. An Nd:YLF laser, operating in continuous donut mode (TEM01), has been used to heat samples inside a diamond anvil cell from both sides. Temperatures of the laser-heated sample are measured by means of spectral radiometry and by the detailed balance principle of the energy spectra. The temperature measured by the detailed balance principle is in very good agreement with values determined from the thermal radiation spectra fitted to the Planck radiation function up to 1700 K. Nuclear resonant scattering on 57Fe-containing materials (i.e., Fe, FeO, Fe2O3) has been studied up to 2500 K and 100 GPa. A detailed description of the laser-heating optics, temperature determination, the X-ray monochromatization, and the X-ray focusing optics is given in this article.

Abstract:Magnetic media remain a key in information storage and processing. The continuous increase of storage densities and the desire for quantum memories and computers pushes the limits of magnetic characterisation techniques. Ultimately, a tool which is capable of coherently manipulating and detecting individual quantum spins is needed. The scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) is the only technique which unites the prerequisites of high spatial and energy resolution, low temperature and high magnetic fields to achieve this goal. Limitations in the available frequency range for electron spin resonance STM (ESR-STM) mean that many instruments operate in the thermal noise regime. We resolve challenges in signal delivery to extend the operational frequency range of ESR-STM by more than a factor of two and up to 100GHz, making the Zeeman energy the dominant energy scale at achievable cryogenic temperatures of a few hundred millikelvin. We present a general method for augmenting existing instruments into ESR-STMs to investigate spin dynamics in the high-field limit. We demonstrate the performance of the instrument by analysing inelastic tunnelling in a junction driven by a microwave signal and provide proof of principle measurements for ESR-STM.

Abstract:The diamond anvil cell-based high-pressure technique is a unique tool for creating new states of matter and for understanding the physics underlying some exotic phenomena. In situ sensing of spin and charge properties under high pressure is crucially important but remains technically challenging. While the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a promising quantum sensor under extreme conditions, its spin dynamics and the quantum control of its spin states under high pressure remain elusive. In this study, we demonstrate coherent control, spin relaxation, and spin dephasing measurements for ensemble NV centers up to 32.8 GPa. With this in situ quantum sensor, we investigate the pressure-induced magnetic phase transition of a micron-size permanent magnet Nd 2 Fe 14B sample in a diamond anvil cell, with a spatial resolution of ∼2 μm, and sensitivity of ∼20 μT/Hz 1/2. This scheme could be generalized to measure other parameters such as temperature, pressure and their gradients under extreme conditions. This will be beneficial for frontier research of condensed matter physics and geophysics.
High pressure behaviour of the magnetic van der Waals molecular framework Ni(NCS)$_2$

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials offer a unique range of magnetic, electronic and mechanical properties which can be controlled by external stimuli. Pressure is a particularly important stimulus, as it can be achieved readily and can produce large responses, especially in low-dimensional materials. In this paper we explore the pressure-dependence of the structural and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) molecular framework antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic layers, Ni(NCS)$_2$, up to 8.4 kbar. Through a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis, we find that Ni(NCS)$_2$ is significantly more compressible than comparable vdW metal halides, and its response is anisotropic not only out of the plane, but also within the layers. Using bulk magnetisation and neutron diffraction data, we show that the ambient layered antiferromagnetic phase is maintained up to the largest investigated pressure, but with an enhanced Néel temperature, $T_\mathrm{N}$, ($\Delta T_\mathrm{N} / T_\mathrm{N} = +19$ %) and a large pressure sensitivity ($Q = \frac{1}{T_\mathrm{N}} \frac{\mathrm{d}T_\mathrm{N}}{\mathrm{d}P} = +2.3$ % kbar$^{-1}$), one of the larger values of magnetic pressure responsiveness for a vdW material. Density functional theory calculations suggest that this is due to increasing three-dimensionality. These results provide some of the first insights into the pressure response of molecular framework vdW magnets and suggest investigation of other molecular framework vdW magnets might uncover contenders for future pressure-switchable devices.

Abstract:Achieving atomic resolution is the ultimate limit of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and attaining this capability offers enormous technological and scientific opportunities, from drug development to understanding the dynamics in interacting quantum systems. In this work, we present a new approach to nanoMRI utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance diffraction (NMRd) -- a method that extends NMR imaging to probe the structure of periodic spin systems. The realization of NMRd on the atomic scale would create a powerful new methodology for materials characterization utilizing the spectroscopic capabilities of NMR. We describe two experiments that realize NMRd measurement of $^{31}$P spins in an indium-phosphide (InP) nanowire with sub-Ångstrom precision. In the first experiment, we encode a nanometer-scale spatial modulation of the $z$-axis magnetization by periodically inverting the $^{31}$P spins, and detect the period and position of the modulation with a precision of $<0.8$ Å. In the second experiment, we demonstrate an interferometric technique, utilizing NMRd, for detecting an Ångstrom-scale displacement of the InP sample with a precision of 0.07 Å. The diffraction-based techniques developed in this work represent new measurement modalities in NMR for probing the structure and dynamics of spins on sub-Ångstrom length scales, and demonstrate the feasibility of crystallographic MRI measurements.

Abstract:We report the observation of a magnetic transition at the temperature about 56 K, through the high-pressure heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements on the samples that have been claimed to be a near-room-temperature superconductor [Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. Nature 615, 244 (2023)]. Our results show that this magnetic phase is robust against pressure up to 4.3 GPa, which covers the critical pressure of boosting the claimed superconductivity.

Abstract:We propose a theory for a type of apertureless scanning near field microscopy that is intended to allow the measurement of magnetism on a nanometer length scale. A scanning probe, for example a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip, is used to scan a magnetic substrate while a laser is focused on it. The electric field between the tip and substrate is enhanced in such a way that the circular polarization due to the Kerr effect, which is normally of order 0.1% is increased by up to two orders of magnitude for the case of a Ag or W tip and an Fe sample. Apart from this there is a large background of circular polarization which is non-magnetic in origin. This circular polarization is produced by light scattered from the STM tip and substrate. A detailed retarded calculation for this light-in-light-out experiment is presented.
