Abstract:Solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production was an essential way to simultaneously solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. C3N4 was a promising substrate for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Herein, we prepared Pt nanoclusters anchored on C3N4 with nitrogen vacancies (Pt/NV-CN) using a rapid Joule heating method. Compared with the traditional calcination method, the Joule heating method not only shortened the preparation time, but also significantly increased the number of reactive sites and further enhanced the photocatalytic activity. Experiments and theoretical calculations confirmed that there was a rapid charge transfer between the metal (Pt) and the substrate (C3N4), and the dual active sites (i.e. nitrogen vacancies and Pt clusters) could decrease the hydrogen adsorption energy. Therefore, as-prepared Pt/NV-CN exhibited excellent hydrogen production activity with a production rate increased from 0 (for pristine C3N4) to 323.90 μmol/h/g, which was also greatly higher than that of Pt/CN-d-VN obtained by traditional tube furnace (97.08 μmol/h/g). This work provided a new method to fabricate the nitrogen vacancies and load Pt clusters onto C3N4 for highly-efficiently photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Photocatalysis combined with photothermal effect has become a promising process for highly-efficiently production of H 2 . In this work, C 3 N 4 was solvothermally grown on carbon paper and further construction of vacancies by fast Joule heating treatment. The substrate carbon paper could increase the photothermal evaporation of water, and the fabricated vacancies could accelerate the charge separation. Furthermore, the temperature increased because of the photothermal synergistic effect, which was favorable for the H 2 evolution reaction. Based on the above, the CP/SCN-NVs system achieved efficient H 2 evolution in deionized water without sacrificial agent and precious metal co-catalysts, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 2248.83 μmol m -2 h −1 , which was 41.3 times higher than the C 3 N 4 suspension system. Overall, this work offered a new approach for efficient H 2 evolution in photothermal-photocatalytic dual-phase systems.

Abstract:Mesoporous Ni/NiO/carbon composites were successfully prepared from the tri-component self-assembly of carbon dots, nickel precursors and surfactant F127. The functional groups of carbon dots can chelate with the metal and then further assemble with the surfactant to prepare mesoporous metals/carbon materials (Ni-NC/MC), which are applied to the electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. The results show that the interaction between Ni/NiO heterostructures is the active component of the catalyst. The carbon dots show a certain confinement effect, which hinders the further growth of metal particles. Moreover, large specific surface area and suitable Ni/NiO ratio are beneficial to the HER catalytic activity and operational stability of the catalyst.

A novel nickel-based honeycomb electrode with microtapered holes and abundant multivacancies for highly efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:Hydrogen production is the key to the development and utilization of hydrogen energy. In this paper, we find a new phenomenon in which abundant and uniform bubbles evolve and quickly release during water splitting on the surface of a nickel-based honeycomb electrode with microtapered holes (NHEMH). Benefiting from the unique microtapered hole honeycomb structure, the solution circulation on the surface of NHEMH is accelerated, thus generating a dynamically stabilized reactive interface and improving the ionic/mass exchange. Meanwhile, the unique honeycomb skeleton has good hydrophilicity and aerophobic properties. Furthermore, NHEMH with a large surface area, rich multi-vacancies, and highly conductive nickel metal exhibits an outstanding electrocatalytic ability. P-doped NHEMH (PNHEMH) with the Ni2P/NiO heterointerface decorated by multivacancies, when used as an electrolyzer for overall water splitting, requires only 1.52 V to produce a current density of 10 mA/cm2, which is much better than the performance of benchmark Pt/C//IrO2 electrodes.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting for the production of hydrogen proves to be effective and available. In general, the thermal radiation synthesis usually involves a slow heating and cooling process. Here, a high‐frequency induction heating (IH) is employed to rapidly prepare various self‐supported electrocatalysts grown on Ni foam (NF) in liquid‐ and gas‐phase within 1–3 min. The NF not only serves as an in situ heating medium, but also as a growth substrate. The as‐synthesized Ni nanoparticles anchored on MoO2 nanowires supported on NF (Ni‐MoO2/NF‐IH) enable catalysis of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), showing a low overpotential of −39 mV (10 mA cm−2) and maintaining the stability of 12 h in alkaline condition. Moreover, the NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH/NF‐IH) is also synthesized via IH and affords outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with an overpotential of 246 mV (10 mA cm−2). The Ni‐MoO2/NF‐IH and NiFe LDH/NF‐IH are assembled to construct a two‐electrode system, where a small cell voltage of ≈1.50 V enables a current density of 10 mA cm−2. More importantly, this IH method is also available to rapidly synthesize other freestanding electrocatalysts on NF, such as transition metal hydroxides and metal nitrides.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising metal-free photocatalyst for solar photo catalytic hydrogen gas (H-2) generation from water. In particularly, high-crystalline g-C3N4 (GCN-HC) material with fewer structural defects possesses the fast photoexcited electron-hole pair's separation efficiency as comparison with bulk g-C3N4 (GCN-B) powders, leading to the drastic improvement of photocatalytic activity. However, the fabrication of such GCN-HC photocatalyst by a simple and economical synthesis approach still remains a challenge. Herein, we firstly develop a one-step rapid polymerization strategy for synthesizing the GCN-HC, that is direct calcination of melamine at 550 degrees C not only without the early heating process, but also without the assistance of any additive or salt intercalation. As a result, the GCN-HC exhibits an obviously boosting visible-light-induced photocatalytic H-2-generation performance, which is over 2.06-folds much greater than that of GCN-B. Our work provides an available one-step synthetic strategy for the large-scale preparation of high performance GCN-HC towards sustainable solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Ultra-Thin Nanohoneycomb Porous Comoo4 with Excellent Catalytic Performance for Water Splitting at Large Current Densities

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is considered the most effective and cleanest strategy to make full use of renewable energy. It still lacks the highly efficient and stable bifunctional catalyst to deliver high current density for large scale application of water splitting. Here, we innovatively developed a facile method to synthesize a three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb porous CoMoO4@pNi (porous nickel) catalyst with ultra-thin nanosheet, the generated oxygen vacancies and mesoporous structures with defects as active sites. We also precisely tuned the thickness and array structure to investigate its catalytic performance. The as-prepared CoMoO4@pNi catalyst delivers the overpotential of 377 mV for HER and 410 mV for OER, respectively, and only demands 1.99 V to reach a large current density of 1000 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting. CoMoO4@pNi catalyst is also operated for 200 h under 500 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively, and both showed an ignorable current decrease. The excellent activity and stability are ascribed to the high surface area, short transport path for electrons and protons, the full contact between the exposed active sites and electrolyte, and the inherent stable nanohoneycomb porous structure of the ultra-thin nanosheet.

Abstract:Morphology regulation and electronic structure modulation are very important means to improve the photocatalytic H-2 evolution capability of the metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst. Herein, we constructed a multiple ordered porous honeycomb structure g-C(3)N(4)via a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method with the co-pyrolysis of melamine and glucose, involving the in-plane seamless splicing of the carbon ring (C-r) into the g-C3N4 lattice network (denoted as C-r-PHCN). The as-prepared C-r-PHCN exhibits a periodic honeycomb structure with a similar to 300 nm inner diameter and similar to 20 nm wall thickness. The multi-dimensional honeycomb architecture provides the concomitant advantages of enhanced light-harvesting ability, abundant active sites and short electron transport paths. Simultaneously, the seamless in-plane C-r splicing in triazine@C-r extends the pi-conjugated systems, which contributes to a narrow band gap, improved electrical conductivity and a low electron-hole recombination rate. Accordingly, the average hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of C-r-PHCN reaches 7581 mu mol h(-1) g(-1), around 47.4 times that of pure CN (160 mu mol h(-1) g(-1)), and its remarkable apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) reaches 10.62% at 420 nm. This work has successfully achieved the simultaneous morphology control and in-plane modification of high-performance g-C3N4 with high yield.

Theoretical calculations and experimental results underscore the synergistic effects of the heterojunction and photothermal properties in the NCO-ZIS composite, leading to a significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity. Detailed investigation of photocatalytic mechanism elucidates how the heterojunction bolsters carrier separation and suppresses carrier recombination, while the photothermal effect broadens light absorption, elevates reaction temperature, accelerates carrier migration, and reduces activation energy. Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting provides a green method to solve the energy shortage issue. Combine two-dimensional carbon nitride nano sheets with other two-dimensional semiconductors can effectively increase the construct area and improve the utilization of photogenerated charges. Herein, 2D-2D NiCo-LDH/g-C3N4 composites were successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The lamellar NiCo-LDH was grown in situ on g-C3N4, in which way the hydrogen production rate was enhanced by about 21 times, reaching 755 μmol·g−1·h−1. According to the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an S-type heterojunction is successfully constructed, which achieves the spatial separation of semiconductor photogenerated electron-hole with guaranteed strong redox capability. This work emphasizes that effective transport channels for transfer and separation of photogenerated charges can be created through efficient interfacial regulation strategy.

Abstract:Morphology regulation and electronic structure modulation are very important means to improve the photocatalytic H2 evolution of metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst. Abstract:As a metallic cocatalyst, the photothermal effect of NiCo2S4 in the process of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution has not been deeply discussed elsewhere. It has been well known that how to intrinsically speed the photogenerated electrons transfer and active absorbed Water (*H2O) to release more hydrogen proton (*H) are extremely meaningful to photocatalytic hydrogen evolution improvement. Herein, a convenient and mild two-step solvothermal strategy was developed to meticulously design the intimate contact structure between a noble-metal-free cocatalyst NiCo2S4 and semiconductor ZnIn2S4 nanoflower, which facilitates the charge rearrangement at the interface to boost the separation of photogenerated carriers. Importantly, photothermal effect induced by NiCo2S4 was demonstrated to ameliorate slow kinetics of water spilling with the apparent activation energy reduction form 50.5 kJ·mol−1 to 38.8 kJ·mol−1, which was responsible for improving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 6834.6 μmol·g−1·h−1 accompanied by apparent quantum efficiency of 13.0% at 400 nm. The electron transfer was accelerated due to localized electric field enhancement determined by Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. The decline of Gibbs free energy barrier of adsorbed water from 2.94 eV on ZIS to 1.62 eV on NCS/ZIS resulted in H-OH bond activating was demonstrated using density functional theory (DFT). This work will provide an effective pathway to design semiconductor-metal-based photothermal assisted photocatalytic system and expand the application of metallic NiCo2S4 in solar-to-fuel conversion.

Abstract:Hydrothermal treatment has been widely employed for material synthesis and modification. In this work, with the help of the homemade microreactor, a rapid high-temperature hydrothermal post treatment (RHTHTPT) process with fast heat transfer and short processing time was elaborately designed for graphitic carbon nitride (gC3N4). Taking advantage of high temperature and short duration time during RHTHTPT process, the RHTHTPTderived g-C3N4 reached up to a high product yield over 80%. The RHTHTPT-derived g-C3N4 showed an enhanced photocatalytic H2-evolution activity about 5.1 times that of pristine g-C3N4 under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm). With systematic characterizations and the tracking of gas-liquid-solid products by RHTHTPT, it was found that the RHTHTPT could effectively enlarge the specific surface area to increase the active sites for photocatalytic H2-evolution reaction, abundant amino groups and the insertion of oxygen-containing functional groups in the surface of g-C3N4 could realize efficient carriers separation, both of which gave rise to the improved photocatalytic H2-evolution performance. This work develops a promising hydrothermal strategy to regulate the in-plane structure of g-C3N4 and brings a deeper understanding for the correlation between RHTHTPT-induced structure modification with photocatalytic ability, and therefore further provides some guidelines for directionally designing the special structures of g-C3N4 as well as other potential materials by hydrothermal modification.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is a cost-effective way to convert sustainable solar energy into chemical energy. Among various photocatalytic systems, coupling the H2- and O2- evolving photocatalysts has been widely used in photocatalytic water splitting. However, due to the close spatial distance between surface electrons and surface holes, this heterogeneous material easily catalyzes the unwanted reverse reaction, limiting the solar energy conversion efficiency. Here we present a carbon nitride nanosheet (CNN) homojunction which possesses electrons-enriched region and holes-enriched region induced by the interfacial internal electric field. The reverse reactions are significantly suppressed by benefiting from the spatial separation of the oxidation (+2.21 V) and reduction (-1.19 V) regions. The homojunction exhibits efficient photocatalytic activity for H2 and O2 evolution (1270.5 and 36.0 lmol h-1) with the scavenger. Meanwhile, the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of overall water splitting was improved to 0.14%. This research provides a new way for semiconductor design in solar energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Catalyst synthesis plays a crucial role in advancing photo and electrocatalysis technologies for sustainable development. However, the traditional thermal radiation heating method suffers from the disadvantages of high energy consumption, low heat transfer efficiency, slow heating speed and long heating time, which leads to the inefficiency and cost increases in catalyst preparation.The Joule‐heating ultrafast synthesis method with rapid heating/quenching and shorter heating time has attracted much attention. Despite its potential, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews specifically addressing the synthesis of advanced photo and electrocatalysts via Joule‐heating. Therefore, this review aims to help people quickly understand the advantages of Joule‐heating in the synthesis of photo and electrocatalysts.Herein, we firstly introduce the principles and devices of Joule‐heating, and then we discuss breakthroughs in defect modulation, heterojunction construction, single‐atom catalysts, bimetallic alloy catalysts, high‐entropy alloy catalysts and metastable catalysts achieved through Joule‐heating technology. The diverse applications of these catalysts include hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, oxygen reduction reactions, carbon dioxide reduction reactions, nitrogen reduction reaction and degradation of organic pollutants. Furthermore, this review provides a forward‐looking perspective on future directions for employing Joule‐heating methods in the field of photo and electrocatalysis research.This review highlights the pivotal role played by Joule‐heating techniques in advancing nanomaterial synthesis as well as developing sustainable high‐performance catalyst systems.

Knack behind the high performance CdS/ZnS-NiS nanocomposites: Optimizing synergistic effect between cocatalyst and heterostructure for boosting hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Introducing co-catalyst and constructing heterostructure are two of the most promising strategies in improving the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of semiconductors. However, it has always been a great challenge to develop a facile and low-cost system to facilitate the highly efficient synergistic effect between co-catalyst and heterostructure. Herein, co-catalyst NiS decorated ZnS/CdS heterostructure (CdS/ZnS-NiS) has been fabricated by using a facile one-pot hydrothermal procedure for the photocatalytic H2 evolution from water splitting. As a result, CdS, ZnS and NiS contact closely with each other at nano scale to assemble into fluffy porous nanocomposite, the optimized CdS/ZnS-NiS exhibits a high hydrogen evolution rate of 60.44 mmol·h−1g−1 without the addition of extra noble metal co-catalyst, which is about 22.3 times higher than that of pure CdS and much higher than that of 1% wt Pt decorated CdS/ZnS (52.36 mmol·h−1g−1). One-pot fabrication process allows the formation of intimate contacted interface between different components, contributing to the sufficient exposure of active reaction sites. Moreover, noble-metal-free co-catalyst NiS distributes uniformly in both surface and inner region of porous nanocomposite. The synergistic effect between the intimately contacted heterostructure and co-catalyst boosts the separation and utilization of photogenerated charge carriers, resulting in a dramatically enhanced H2 evolution ability. This work provides a facile pathway to uniformly introduce noble-metal-free co-catalyst in heterostructure and gives out a paradigm in constructing high active solar energy conversion system.

Abstract:The hierarchical binary CdS/NiO hollow heterogeneous architectures (HHAs) with p-n heterojunction are constructed by a facile microwave-assisted wet chemical process for high-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water. The asdesigned CdS/NiO HHAs are composed of hexagonal n-type CdS nanoparticles with a size in the range of 20–40 nm attaching to cubic p-type NiO hollow microspheres (HMSs) which are aggregates of porous nanoplates with a thickness of about 20 nm. The photocatalytic water splitting over CdS/NiO HHAs is significantly increased under simulated solar irradiation, among which the most active sample of CdS/NiO-3 (the mass ratio of CdS to NiO is 1:3) exhibits the fastest photocatalytic HER rate of 1.77 mmol·g−1·h−1, being 16.2 times than that of pure CdS. The boosted photocatalytic HER could be attributed to the synergistic effect on the proportional p-n heterojunction with special hierarchical hollow and porous morphology, an enhancement of visible light absorption, and an improvement of photoinduced charge separation as well as the photo-stability given by the composite heterojunction. This work shows a viable strategy to design the heterojunction with special morphology for the efficient hydrogen generation by water splitting utilizing solar energy.
