Abstract:Attention to the very physical aspects of information characterizes the current research in quantum computation, quantum cryptography and quantum communication. In most of the cases quantum description of the system provides advantages over the classical approach. Game theory, the study of decision making in conflict situation has already been extended to the quantum domain. We would like to review the latest development in quantum game theory that is relevant to information processing. We will begin by illustrating the general idea of a quantum game and methods of gaining an advantage over "classical opponent". Then we review the most important game theoretical aspects of quantum information processing. On grounds of the discussed material, we reason about possible future development of quantum game theory and its impact on information processing and the emerging information society. The idea of quantum artificial intelligence is explained.

Abstract:Theory of quantum games is a new area of investigation that has gone through rapid development during the last few years. Initial motivation for playing games, in the quantum world, comes from the possibility of re-formulating quantum communication protocols, and algorithms, in terms of games between quantum and classical players. The possibility led to the view that quantum games have a potential to provide helpful insight into working of quantum algorithms, and even in finding new ones. This thesis analyzes and compares some interesting games when played classically and quantum mechanically. A large part of the thesis concerns investigations into a refinement notion of the Nash equilibrium concept. The refinement, called an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), was originally introduced in 1970s by mathematical biologists to model an evolving population using techniques borrowed from game theory. Analysis is developed around a situation when quantization changes ESSs without affecting corresponding Nash equilibria. Effects of quantization on solution-concepts other than Nash equilibrium are presented and discussed. For this purpose the notions of value of coalition, backwards-induction outcome, and subgame-perfect outcome are selected. Repeated games are known to have different information structure than one-shot games. Investigation is presented into a possible way where quantization changes the outcome of a repeated game. Lastly, two new suggestions are put forward to play quantum versions of classical matrix games. The first one uses the association of De Broglie's waves, with travelling material objects, as a resource for playing a quantum game. The second suggestion concerns an EPR type setting exploiting directly the correlations in Bell's inequalities to play a bi-matrix game.

Abstract:Theory of quantum games is relatively new to the literature and its applications to various areas of research are being explored. It is a novel interpretation of strategies and decisions in quantum domain. In the earlier work on quantum games considerable attention was given to the resolution of dilemmas present in corresponding classical games. Two separate quantum schemes were presented by Eisert et al. and Marinatto and Weber to resolve dilemmas in Prisoners' Dilemma and Battle of Sexes games respectively. However for the latter scheme it was argued that dilemma was not resolved. We have modified the quantization scheme of Marinatto and Weber to resolve the dilemma. We have developed a generalized quantization scheme for two person non-zero sum games which reduces to the existing schemes under certain conditions. Applications of this generalized quantization scheme to quantum information theory are studied. Measurement being ubiquitous in quantum mechanics can not be ignored in quantum games. With the help of generalized quantization scheme we have analyzed the effects of measurement on quantum games. Qubits are the important elements for playing quantum games and are generally prone to decoherence due to their interactions with environment. An analysis of quantum games in presence of quantum correlated noise is performed in the context of generalized quantization scheme. Quantum key distribution is one of the key issues of quantum information theory for the purpose of secure communication. Using mathematical framework of generalized quantization scheme we have proposed a protocol for quantum key distribution and a technique for quantum state tomography.

Abstract:We give a concise and self-contained introduction to the theory of Quantum Games by reviewing the seminal works of Meyer, Eisert-Wilkens-Lewenstein, Marinatto-Weber and Landsburg, which initiated the study of this field. By generalizing this body of work, we formulate a protocol to $\textit{Quantumize}$ any finite classical $n$-player game, and use a novel approach of describing such a Quantum Game in terms of commuting Payoff Operators. We describe what advantages can be gained by players by quantumizing such a game, particularly, what additional Nash Equilibria the players can achieve and the Pareto-Optimality of these additional equilibria.

Abstract:In this article, we survey the existing quantum physics related games and based on them propose a definition for the concept of quantum games. We define quantum games as any type of rule-based games that use the principles or reference the theory of quantum physics or quantum phenomena through any of three proposed dimensions: the perceivable dimension of quantum physics, the dimension of quantum technologies, and the dimension of scientific purposes like citizen science or education. We also discuss the concept of quantum computer games, games on quantum computers and discuss the definitions for the concept of science games. At the same time, there are various games exploring quantum physics and quantum computing through digital, analogue, and hybrid means with diverse incentives driving their development. As interest in games as educational tools for supporting quantum literacy grows, understanding the diverse landscape of quantum games becomes increasingly important. We propose that three dimensions of quantum games identified in this article are used for designing, analysing and defining the phenomenon of quantum games.

Abstract:The ongoing second quantum revolution, marked by advancements harnessing quantum phenomena, has permeated various fields, including communications, computation, and networking, collectively known as quantum technologies (QT). Quantum computing, a focal point within QT, has led to the emergence of quantum games, a novel research and development area exploring creative applications of quantum computing in game development. While more than 300 quantum games have been developed by enthusiasts and commercial parties, a comprehensive research program or state-of-the-art review is notably absent. This paper addresses this gap by conducting a thorough literature review, presenting current advancements and examples in quantum games and interactive designs, and exploring future prospects for quantum technologies in game development practices.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to quantization of extensive games with the use of both the Marinatto-Weber and the Eisert-Wilkens-Lewenstein concept of quantum game. We revise the current conception of quantum ultimatum game and we show why the proposal is unacceptable. To support our approach, we present a new idea of the quantum ultimatum game. Our scheme also makes a point of departure for a general protocol for quantizing extensive games.

Abstract:Quantum phenomena have remained largely inaccessible to the general public. This can be attributed to the fact that we do not experience quantum mechanics on a tangible level in our daily lives. Games can provide an environment in which people can experience the strange behavior of the quantum world in a fun and mentally engaging way. Games could also offer an interesting test bed for near term quantum devices because they can be tailored to support varying amounts of quantum behavior through simple rule changes, which can be useful when dealing with limited resources. This paper explores the design of a variant of Chess which is built on top of unitary dynamics and includes non-trivial quantum effects such as superposition, entanglement, and interference. A movement ruleset is introduced which allows players to create superposition, entanglement, and interference effects. A measurement rule is also introduced which helps limit the size of the superposition, so the game remains tractable for a classical computer, and also helps make the game more comprehensible for a player.

Abstract:In the standard approach to quantum games, players' moves are local unitary transformations on an entangled state that is subsequently measured. Players' payoffs are then obtained as expected values of the entries in the payoff matrix of the classical game on a set of quantum probabilities obtained from the quantum measurement. In this paper, we approach quantum games from a diametrically opposite perspective. We consider a classical three-player symmetric game along with a known expression for a set of quantum probabilities relevant to a tripartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) experiment that depends on three players' directional choices in the experiment. We define the players' moves as their directional choices in an EPR setting and then express their payoff relations in the resulting quantum game in terms of their directional choices, the entries of the payoff matrix, and the quantum probability distribution relevant to the tripartite EPR experiment.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) advancements over the past few years have had an unprecedented and revolutionary impact across everyday application areas. Its significance also extends to technical challenges within science and engineering, including the nascent field of quantum computing (QC). The counterintuitive nature and high-dimensional mathematics of QC make it a prime candidate for AI's data-driven learning capabilities, and in fact, many of QC's biggest scaling challenges may ultimately rest on developments in AI. However, bringing leading techniques from AI to QC requires drawing on disparate expertise from arguably two of the most advanced and esoteric areas of computer science. Here we aim to encourage this cross-pollination by reviewing how state-of-the-art AI techniques are already advancing challenges across the hardware and software stack needed to develop useful QC - from device design to applications. We then close by examining its future opportunities and obstacles in this space.

The History of Quantum Games

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the historical development of playable quantum physics related games (\textit{\textbf{quantum games}}). For the purpose of this examination, we have collected over 260 quantum games ranging from commercial games, applied and serious games, and games that have been developed at quantum themed game jams and educational courses. We provide an overview of the journey of quantum games across three dimensions: \textit{the perceivable dimension of quantum physics, the dimension of scientific purposes, and the dimension of quantum technologies}. We then further reflect on the definition of quantum games and its implications. While motivations behind developing quantum games have typically been educational or academic, themes related to quantum physics have begun to be more broadly utilised across a range of commercial games. In addition, as the availability of quantum computer hardware has grown, entirely new variants of quantum games have emerged to take advantage of these machines' inherent capabilities, \textit{quantum computer games}

Abstract:The quest of this work is to present discussions of some fundamental questions of economics in the era of quantum technology, which require a treatment different from economics studied thus far in the literature. A study of quantum economic behavior will become the center of attention of economists in the coming decades. We analyze a quantum economy in which players produce and consume quantum goods. They meet randomly and barter with neighbors bilaterally for quantum goods they produced. We clarify the conditions where certain quantum goods emerge endogenously as media of exchange, called quantum commodity money. As quantum strategies are entangled, we find distinctive aspects of quantum games that cannot be explained by conventional classical games. In some situations a quantum player can acquire a quantum good from people regardless of their strategies, while on the other hand people can find quantum strategies that improve their welfare based on an agreement. Those novel properties imply that quantum games also shed new light on theories of mechanism design, auction and contract in the quantum era.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of existing quantum physics-related games, referred to as quantum games , that serve citizen science research in quantum physics. Additionally, we explore the connection between citizen science and quantum computer games , games played on quantum computers. The information presented is derived from academic references and supplemented by diverse sources, including social media publications, conference presentations and blog posts from research groups and developers associated with the presented games. We observe that the current landscape of quantum games is shaped by three distinct driving forces: the serious application of games, the evolution of quantum computers and open game development events such as Quantum Game Jams . Notably, citizen science plays an influential role in all three aspects. The article points to existing design guides for citizen science quantum games and views future prospects of citizen science projects and quantum games through collaborative endeavours, human–machine collaboration and open access quantum computers.

Abstract:Recently, a standardized framework was proposed for introducing quantum-inspired moves in mathematical games with perfect information and no chance. The beauty of quantum games-succinct in representation, rich in structures, explosive in complexity, dazzling for visualization, and sophisticated for strategic reasoning-has drawn us to play concrete games full of subtleties and to characterize abstract properties pertinent to complexity consequence. Going beyond individual games, we explore the tractability of quantum combinatorial games as whole, and address fundamental questions including: Quantum Leap in Complexity: Are there polynomial-time solvable games whose quantum extensions are intractable? Quantum Collapses in Complexity: Are there PSPACE-complete games whose quantum extensions fall to the lower levels of the polynomial-time hierarchy? Quantumness Matters: How do outcome classes and strategies change under quantum moves? Under what conditions doesn't quantumness matter? PSPACE Barrier for Quantum Leap: Can quantum moves launch PSPACE games into outer polynomial space We show that quantum moves not only enrich the game structure, but also impact their computational complexity. In settling some of these basic questions, we characterize both the powers and limitations of quantum moves as well as the superposition of game configurations that they create. Our constructive proofs-both on the leap of complexity in concrete Quantum Nim and Quantum Undirected Geography and on the continuous collapses, in the quantum setting, of complexity in abstract PSPACE-complete games to each level of the polynomial-time hierarchy-illustrate the striking computational landscape over quantum games and highlight surprising turns with unexpected quantum impact. Our studies also enable us to identify several elegant open questions fundamental to quantum combinatorial game theory (QCGT).

Abstract:We present a perspective on quantum games that focuses on the physical aspects of the quantities that are used to implement a game. If a game is to be played, it has to be played with objects and actions that have some physical existence. We call such games playable. By focusing on the notion of playability for games we can more clearly see the distinction between classical and quantum games and tackle the thorny issue of what it means to quantize a game. The approach we take can more properly be thought of as gaming the quantum rather than quantizing a game and we find that in this perspective we can think of a complete quantum game, for a given set of preferences, as representing a single family of quantum games with many different playable versions. The versions of Quantum Prisoners Dilemma presented in the literature can therefore be thought of specific instances of the single family of Quantum Prisoner's Dilemma with respect to a particular measurement. The conditions for equilibrium are given for playable quantum games both in terms of expected outcomes and a geometric approach. We discuss how any quantum game can be simulated with a classical game played with classical coins as far as the strategy selections and expected outcomes are concerned.

Abstract:In recent years, the dramatic progress in machine learning has begun to impact many areas of science and technology significantly. In the present perspective article, we explore how quantum technologies are benefiting from this revolution. We showcase in illustrative examples how scientists in the past few years have started to use machine learning and more broadly methods of artificial intelligence to analyze quantum measurements, estimate the parameters of quantum devices, discover new quantum experimental setups, protocols, and feedback strategies, and generally improve aspects of quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum simulation. We highlight open challenges and future possibilities and conclude with some speculative visions for the next decade.
