Abstract:Supersymmetric rotating 1/16-BPS black holes in $AdS_4 \times S^7$ are expected to capture the average degeneracy of BPS states in the dual ABJM superconformal theory for given fixed charges. This has been successfully demonstrated for the superconformal index using complexified black hole metrics, but a naive Gibbons-Hawking calculation of the actual degeneracies in the low temperature limit is invalid due to large quantum fluctuations of the near horizon $AdS_2$ metric. We argue that in a particular mixed grand/canonical ensemble, these fluctuations of the near-BPS Kerr-Newman black holes are described by a version of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-Schwarzian theory with $SU(1,1|1)$ symmetry. Using this description as well as properties of ABJM, we recover the large $N$ superconformal index and find a characteristic ``mass gap'' of order $N^{-3/2}$ between the 1/16-BPS states and the lightest near BPS state. We further make a prediction for the operator dimension spectrum above the gap in the large $N$, low $T$ limit. Our results are consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking formula at large energies, random matrix theory at low energies, and the microscopic index.

Signatures of discretization in quantum black hole spectra

Abstract:The quantum superposition principle states that quantum-mechanical systems such as atoms can be placed in a superposition of mass-energy eigenstates. Inspired by this idea and the seminal conjecture of Bekenstein, who proposed that black holes in quantum gravity must possess a discrete mass eigenspectrum, here we analyze the effects produced by a black hole in a superposition of masses. Analogous to using the electromagnetic field to probe atoms, we consider a quantum scalar field on the spacetime background sourced by the black hole mass superposition. From the resulting spectra, as measured by a hypothetical two-level system interacting with the field, we infer signatures of discretization of the black hole mass in support of Bekenstein's conjecture.

Abstract:The quantum black hole model with a self-gravitating spherically symmetric thin dust shell as a source is considered. The shell Hamiltonian constraint is written and the corresponding Schroedinger equation is obtained. This equation appeared to be a finite differences equation. Its solutions are required to be analytic functions on the relevant Riemannian surface. The method of finding discrete spectra is suggested based on the analytic properties of the solutions. The large black hole approximation is considered and the discrete spectra for bound states of quantum black holes and wormholes are found. They depend on two quantum numbers and are, in fact, quasi-continuous. The quantum black hole bound state depends not only on mass but also on an additional quantum number, and black holes with the same mass have different quantum hairs. These hairs exhibit themselves at the Planckian distances near the black hole horizon. For the observer who can not measure the distances smaller than the Planckian length the black hole has the only parameter, its mass. The other, non-measurable, parameter leads to the quantum corrections to the black hole entropy. The quantum states with given mass are the mixed ones. It is shown that there exists the ground quantum black hole state with minimal mass equal approximately the Planckian mass. Its quantum state has zero entropy and it is a pure state. The existence of the quantum hairs may solve (at least partially) the well known information paradox in the black hole physics.

Abstract:Based on various string theoretic constructions, and various string-inspired generalizations thereof, there have been repeated suggestions that the areas of black hole event horizons might be quantized in a quite specific manner, in terms of linear combinations of square roots of positive integers. It is important to realise that there are significant physical constraints on such integer-based proposals when one (somewhat speculatively) attempts to extend them outside their original extremal and supersymmetric framework. Specifically, in their most natural and direct physical interpretations, some of the more speculative integer-based proposals for the quantization of horizon areas fail for the ordinary Kerr-Newman black holes in (3+1) dimensions, essentially because the fine structure constant is not an integer. A more baroque interpretation involves asserting the fine structure constant is the square root of a rational number; but such a proposal has its own problems. Insofar as one takes (3+1) general relativity (plus the usual quantization of angular momentum and electric charge) as being paramount, the known explicitly calculable spectra of horizon areas for the physically compelling Kerr-Newman spacetimes indicate that some caution is called for when assessing the universality of some of the more speculative integer-based string-inspired proposals.

Abstract:There is a well-known, intuitive geometric correspondence between high-frequency quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild black holes and null geodesics that reside on the light ring (often called spherical photon orbits): the real part of the mode’s frequency relates to the geodesic’s orbital frequency, and the imaginary part of the frequency corresponds to the Lyapunov exponent of the orbit. For slowly rotating black holes, the quasinormal mode’s real frequency is a linear combination of the orbit’s precessional and orbital frequencies, but the correspondence is otherwise unchanged. In this paper, we find a relationship between the quasinormal-mode frequencies of Kerr black holes of arbitrary (astrophysical) spins and general spherical photon orbits, which is analogous to the relationship for slowly rotating holes. To derive this result, we first use the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation to compute accurate algebraic expressions for large-l quasinormal-mode frequencies. Comparing our Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin calculation to the leading-order, geometric-optics approximation to scalar-wave propagation in the Kerr spacetime, we then draw a correspondence between the real parts of the parameters of a quasinormal mode and the conserved quantities of spherical photon orbits. At next-to-leading order in this comparison, we relate the imaginary parts of the quasinormal-mode parameters to coefficients that modify the amplitude of the scalar wave. With this correspondence, we find a geometric interpretation of two features of the quasinormal-mode spectrum of Kerr black holes: First, for Kerr holes rotating near the maximal rate, a large number of modes have nearly zero damping; we connect this characteristic to the fact that a large number of spherical photon orbits approach the horizon in this limit. Second, for black holes of any spins, the frequencies of specific sets of modes are degenerate; we find that this feature arises when the spherical photon orbits corresponding to these modes form closed (as opposed to ergodically winding) curves.

Quasinormal Modes and Spectroscopy of a Schwarzschild Black Hole Surrounded by a Cloud of Strings in Rastall Gravity

Abstract:We obtain the solution of a static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity and study the influence of the parameter a associated with strings on the event horizon and the Hawking temperature. Through analyzing the black hole metric, we find that the static spherically symmetric black hole solution surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity can be transformed into the static spherically symmetric black hole solution surrounded by quintessence in Einstein gravity when the parameter β of Rastall gravity is positive, which provides a possibility for the string fluid to be a candidate of dark energy. We use the method of Regge and Wheeler together with the high order WKB-Pade approximation to calculate the quasinormal mode frequencies of the odd parity gravitational perturbation and simultaneously apply the unstable null geodesics of black holes to compute the quasinormal mode frequencies at the eikonal limit for this black hole model. The results show that the increase of the parameter a makes the gravitational wave decay slowly in Rastall gravity. In addition, we utilize two methods, which are based on the adiabatic invariant integral and the periodic property of outgoing waves, respectively, to derive the area spectrum and entropy spectrum of the black hole model. The results show that the area spectrum and entropy spectrum are equidistant spaced. The former is the same as the case of Einstein gravity, while the latter is different, depending on the Rastall parameter β.
Kerr Black Holes From Massive Higher-Spin Gauge Symmetry

Abstract:We propose that the dynamics of Kerr black holes is strongly constrained by the principle of gauge symmetry. We initiate the construction of EFTs for Kerr black holes of any integer quantum spin s using Stueckelberg fields, and show that the known three-point Kerr amplitudes are uniquely predicted using massive higher-spin gauge symmetry. This symmetry is argued to be connected to an enhanced range of validity for the Kerr EFTs. We consider the closely related root-Kerr electromagnetic solution in parallel, for which the dynamical interactions with photons are also constrained by massive higher-spin gauge symmetry. Finally, the spin-s Compton amplitudes are analyzed, and we discuss contact-term constraints at s=2 from Ward identities.

Abstract:Four-dimensional Kerr-Schild (KS) geometry displays remarkable relationships with quantum world and theory of superstrings. In particular, the Kerr-Newman (KN) solution has gyromagnetic ratio g = 2, as that of the Dirac electron and represents a consistent background for gravitational and electromagnetic field of the electron. As a consequence of very big spin/mass ratio, black hole horizons disappear, exposing the naked Kerr singular ring. We consider four-decade history of development of this structure which took finally the form of a point-string-membrane-bubble complex which is reminiscent of the enhancon model of string/M-theory. A complex string obtained in the complex structure of the Kerr geometry gives an extra dimension to the world-sheet of the real Kerr string, forming a membrane by analogue with the string/M-theory unification. By analysis of the orientifold parity of the complex Kerr string, we obtain that the determined by the Kerr theorem principal null congruence of the Kerr geometry is described by a quartic equation in projective twistor space CP3, and therefore, it creates the known Calabi- Yau twofold (K3 surface) in twistor space of the 4d KS geometry. We connect it with N=2 superstring which has (complex) critical dimension two and may be embedded into complex KS geometry.

Abstract:We study the quasinormal modes of massive Dirac spinors in the background of rotating black holes. In particular, we consider the Kerr geometry as well as the five dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime with equal angular momenta. We decouple the equations using the standard methods from the literature. In the five dimensional Myers-Perry black hole the angular equation is solved analytically. Using the continued fraction method, we calculate the spectrum of quasinormal modes for the ground modes and first excited modes. We analyze, in a systematic way, its dependence on the different parameters of the black hole and fermionic field. We compare our values with previous results available in the literature for Kerr and for the static limit. The numerical results show several differences between the four and five dimensional cases. For instance, in five dimensions the symmetry between the positive and negative (real) frequency of the modes breaks down, which results in a richer spectrum.

The spectrum of a quantum Lifshitz black hole in two dimensions

Abstract:We examine the mass-gap of a four-dimensional near-extremal Lifshitz black hole that arises as a solution to a low energy effective theory of heterotic string theory. The effective two-dimensional gravitational description retains features of the Lifshitz symmetry, which break the usual $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariance down to $U(1)$. For this effective two-dimensional gravitational description, we derive a one-dimensional Schwarzian-like description, which inherits the $U(1)$ symmetry. The Schwarzian-like description allows us to compute a logarithmic correction to the entropy through a saddle-point approximation of the two-dimensional partition function. This logarithmic correction removes the mass-gap, as expected. Furthermore, the prefactor of the logarithmic term is $\frac{1}{2}$, rather than $\frac{3}{2}$ found for the $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariant description, indeed reflecting having fewer symmetries.

Abstract:We present the detailed analyses of a model of loop quantum Schwarzschild interior coupled to a massless scalar field and extend the results in our previous rapid communication arXiv:2006.08313 to more general schemes. It is shown that the spectrum of the black hole mass is discrete and does not contain zero. This indicates the existence of a black hole remnant after Hawking evaporation due to loop quantum gravity effects. Besides to show the existence of a stable black hole remnant in the vacuum case, the quantum dynamics for the non-vacuum case is also solved and compared with the effective one.

Abstract:Deviations from Hawking's thermal black hole spectrum, observable for macroscopic black holes, are derived from a model of a quantum horizon in loop quantum gravity. These arise from additional area eigenstates present in quantum surfaces excluded by the classical isolated horizon boundary conditions. The complete spectrum of area unexpectedly exhibits evenly spaced symmetry. This leads to an enhancement of some spectral lines on top of the thermal spectrum. This can imprint characteristic features into the spectra of black hole systems. It most notably gives the signature of quantum gravity observability in radiation from primordial black holes, and makes it possible to test loop quantum gravity with black holes well above Planck scale.

New insights on near-extremal black holes

Abstract:We describe two puzzles that arise from a semiclassical treatment of near-extremal black hole thermodynamics. Both puzzles are resolved by realizing that quantum corrections become arbitrarily large at low temperatures, and we explain how the spectrum and dynamics of near-extremal black holes are modified. This analysis also implies that without low energy supersymmetry, such as in the real world, extremal black holes at exactly zero temperature do not exist since the classical picture breaks down completely. In the context of supergravity the analysis is modified; supersymmetric extremal black holes do exist and they are separated from the non-extremal spectrum by a gap power-law suppressed in the entropy. This justifies black hole microstate counting performed in the 90's using string theory.

Abstract:According to a recent proposal, the so-called Barbero-Immirzi parameter of loop quantum gravity can be fixed, using Bohr’s correspondence principle, from a knowledge of highly damped black hole oscillation frequencies. Such frequencies are rather difficult to compute, even for Schwarzschild black holes. However, it is now quite likely that they may provide a fundamental link between classical general relativity and quantum theories of gravity. Here we carry out the first numerical computation of very highly damped quasinormal modes (QNM’s) for charged and rotating black holes. In the Reissner-Nordström case QNM frequencies and damping times show an oscillatory behavior as a function of charge. The oscillations become faster as the mode order increases. At fixed mode order, QNM’s describe spirals in the complex plane as the charge is increased, tending towards a well defined limit as the hole becomes extremal. Kerr QNM’s have a similar oscillatory behavior when the angular index m=0. For l=m=2 the real part of Kerr QNM frequencies tends to 2Ω, Ω being the angular velocity of the black hole horizon, while the asymptotic spacing of the imaginary parts is given by 2πTH.

Abstract:We prove a key result regarding the mass and angular momentum content of linear vacuum perturbations of the Kerr metric obtained through the formalism developed by Chrzarnowski, Cohen, and Kegeles (CCK). More precisely we prove that the Abbott-Deser mass and angular momentum integrals of any such perturbation vanish, when that perturbation was obtained from a regular Fourier mode of the Hertz potential. As a corollary we obtain a generalization of previous results on the completion of the `no string' radiation gauge metric perturbation generated by a point particle. We find that for any bound orbit around a Kerr black hole, the mass and angular momentum perturbations completing the CCK metric are simply the energy and angular momentum of the particle "outside" the orbit and vanish "inside" the orbit.

Abstract:We consider the definition of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states for quantum fields on black hole space-times. The properties of these states on a Schwarzschild black hole have been understood for many years, but neither of these states has a direct analogue on a Kerr black hole. We show how superradiant modes play an important role in the definition of quantum states on Kerr. Superradiance is also present on static black hole space-times, in particular for a charged scalar field on a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We explore whether analogues of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states exist in this situation.
