Abstract: We consider the question: ``How bad can the deformation space of an object be?'' The answer seems to be: ``Unless there is some a priori reason otherwise, the deformation space may be as bad as possible.'' We show this for a number of important moduli spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:We show that various natural algebro-geometric moduli stacks, including the stack of curves, have the property that every Deligne-Mumford gerbe over a field appears as the residual gerbe of one of their points. These gerbes are universal obstructions for objects of the stack to be defined over their fields of moduli, and for the corresponding coarse moduli space to be fine. Thus, our results show that many natural moduli stacks hold objects that are obstructed from being defined over their fields of moduli in every possible way, and have coarse spaces which fail to be fine moduli spaces in every possible way. A basic insight enabling our arguments is that many classical constructions in equivariant projective geometry generalize to the setting of relative geometry over an arbitrary Deligne-Mumford gerbe over a field.

Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:This is a survey paper about moduli spaces that have a natural structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. These differ in general, but we show that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel technique for a class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties. Abstract:Let $T := \mathbb{G}_m^d$ be the torus acting on the Quot scheme of points $\coprod_n \mathrm{Quot}_{\mathcal{O}^r/\mathbb{A}^d/\mathbb{Z}}^n$ via the standard action on $\mathbb{A}^d$. We analyze the fixed locus of the Quot scheme under this action. In particular we show that for $d \leq 2$ or $r \leq 2$, this locus is smooth, and that for $d \geq 4$ and $r \geq 3$ it satisfies Murphy's law as introduced by Vakil, meaning that it has arbitrarily bad singularities. These results are obtained by giving a decomposition of the fixed locus into connected components, and identifying the components with incidence schemes of subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^{r-1}$. We then obtain a characterization of the incidence schemes which occur, in terms of their graphs of incidence relations.

Abstract:These notes (prepared for the author's lectures at the Cracow Summer School on Linear Systems organized by S. Mueller-Stach and T. Szemberg, held March 23-27, 2009 at the Pedagogical University of Cracow under the sponsorship of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) present a number of open problems on the theory of smooth projective algebraic surfaces, and put into historical context recent work on a range of topics, including Mori dream spaces and the finite generation of the Cox ring, Seshadri constants, and the resurgence of homogeneous ideals and the problem of which ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals contain given symbolic powers of those ideals. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for when an algebraic stack admits a good moduli space and prove a semistable reduction theorem for points of algebraic stacks equipped with a $\Theta$-stratification. These results provide a generalization of the Keel--Mori theorem to moduli problems whose objects have positive dimensional automorphism groups and give criteria on the moduli problem to have a separated or proper good moduli space. To illustrate our method, we apply these results to construct proper moduli spaces parameterizing semistable $\mathcal{G}$-bundles on curves and moduli spaces for objects in abelian categories.

Abstract:It is believed that the discriminant variety of a semiuniversal deformation of an isolated hypersurface singularity has nice properties, both from the algebro-geometric and homotopy theoretic point of view. Until now, complete results have only been obtained for rational double points. The aim of this lecture is to report on recent progress concerning this question in the case of a unimodular singularity, which supports this belief.

Abstract:In this note, we use give some algebraic applications of a previous result by the author which compares the deformations parameterized by the Maurer-Cartan elements of a differential graded Lie algebra, and a differential graded Lie subalgebra: It gives a criterion for the map on the space of Maurer-Cartan elements up to gauge equivalence, induced by the inclusion of the subalgebra, to be locally surjective. By making appropriate choices for the differential graded Lie algebra and a differential graded Lie subalgebra, we recover some classical results in the deformation theory of finite-dimensional Lie and associative algebras. We consider rigidity of Lie and associative algebras, Lie algebra morphisms, and give a quick proof of the fact that the deformation theories of a unital associative algebra as a unital associative algebra and as an associative algebra are equivalent. We then turn to stability of Lie subalgebras and their morphisms under deformations of the ambient Lie algebra structure, and study when the compatibility with a geometric structure of a representation of a Lie algebra on a vector space is stable under deformations of the representation.

Abstract:A classical problem in algebraic geometry is to construct smooth algebraic varieties with prescribed properties. In the approach via smoothings, one first constructs a degenerate scheme with the prescribed properties, and then shows the existence of a smooth variety degenerating to this scheme. Logarithmic geometry has given important new impulses to the second step of this approach, which we explore in this book. Degenerations, in particular in the context of mirror symmetry, often enjoy similar formal properties as smooth morphisms once considered from the logarithmic perspective. Logarithmic deformation theory has therefore become an effective tool for the construction of smoothings and the transfer of properties between smooth nearby fibers and the singular special fiber. The strongest existence result for deformations in classical algebraic geometry is the Bogomolov--Tian--Todorov theorem for Calabi--Yau varieties. A logarithmic variant, once established, constructs log smooth deformations. However, the logarithmic Bogomolov--Tian--Todorov theorem has resisted efforts to its proof for a while. Finally, a method to prove it was discovered in 2019 by Chan, Leung, and Ma. In this book, we explore this new approach to the logarithmic Bogomolov--Tian--Todorov theorem. We prove several variants of the abstract unobstructedness theorem, some of which are new and stronger than previously known results. We investigate its application to the global deformation theory of log smooth and mildly log singular spaces, obtaining unobstructedness results for log Calabi--Yau spaces, some log Fano spaces, and line bundles. Special care is taken to allow sufficiently mild log singularities, including all log singularities that appear in the Gross--Siebert construction of toric log Calabi--Yau mirror pairs.

Abstract:The strata of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials are non-homogenous spaces carrying natural bi-algebraic structures. Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a flat Lorentzian space of signature $(2, 1)$. A Margulis space-time is a noncompact complete Lorentz flat $3$-manifold $E/\Gamma$ with a free isometry group $\Gamma$ of rank $g \geq 2$. We consider the case when $\Gamma$ contains a parabolic element. We show that sufficiently small deformations of $\Gamma$ still act properly on $E$. We use our previous work showing that $E/\Gamma$ can be compactified relative to a union of solid tori and some old idea of Carrière in his famous work. We will show that the there is also a decomposition of $E/\Gamma$ by crooked planes that are disjoint and embedded in a generalized sense. These can be perturbed so that $E/\Gamma$ decomposes into cells. This partially affirms the conjecture of Charette-Drumm-Goldman.

Moduli spaces of quadratic differentials: Abel-Jacobi map and deformation

Abstract:We study the moduli space of framed quadratic differentials with prescribed singularities parameterized by a decorated marked surface with punctures (DMSp), where simple zeros, double poles and higher order poles respectively correspond to decorations, punctures and boundary components. We show that the fundamental group of this space equals the kernel of the Abel-Jacobi (AJ) map from the surface mapping class group of DMSp to the first homology group of the marked surface (without decorations/punctures). Moreover, a universal cover of this space is given by the space of stability conditions on the associated 3-Calabi-Yau category. Furthermore, when we partially compactify and orbifold this moduli space by allowing the collision of simple zeros and some of the double poles, the resulting moduli space is isomorphic to a quotient of the space of stability conditions on the deformed (with respect to those collidable double poles) 3-Calabi-Yau category. Finally, we show that the fundamental group of this partially compactified orbifold equals the quotient group of the kernel of the AJ map by the square of any point-pushing diffeomorphism around any collidable double pole. This construction can produces any non-exceptional spherical/Euclidean Artin braid groups.

On the Kodaira Dimension of the Moduli of Deformation Generalised Kummer Varieties

Abstract:We prove general type results for orthogonal modular varieties associated with the moduli of compact hyperkähler manifolds of deformation generalised Kummer type ('deformation generalised Kummer varieties'). In particular, we consider moduli spaces of deformation generalised Kummer fourfolds with split-polarisation of degree $2d$. Our main result is that when $d$ is prime or $2d$ is square-free then the associated modular varieties are of general type when $d$ exceeds bounds we determine, subject to the existence of certain low-weight cusp forms for $\operatorname{O}(2,n)$. As a corollary, we conclude that the corresponding moduli spaces are also of general type.

Abstract:Twistor spaces are certain compact complex threefolds with an additional real fibre bundle structure. We focus here on twistor spaces over $3\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$. Such spaces are either small resolutions of double solids or they can be described as modifications of conic bundles. The last type is the more special one: they deform into double solids. We give an explicit description of this deformation, in a more general context.

Abstract:The complete classification of the orbits on subspaces under the action of the projective stabiliser of (classical) algebraic varieties is a challenging task, and few classifications are complete. We focus on a particular action of $\PGL(2,q^2)$ (and $\PSL(2,q^2)$) arising from the Hermitian Veronese curve in $\PG(3, q^2)$, a maximal rational curve embedded on a smooth Hermitian surface with some fascinating properties. The study of its orbits leads to a new construction of quasi-Hermitian surfaces: sets of points with the same combinatorial and geometric properties as a non-degenerate Hermitian surface.

Birational geometry of smooth families of varieties admitting good minimal models

Abstract:In this paper we study families of projective manifolds with good minimal models. After constructing a suitable moduli functor for polarized varieties with canonical singularities, we show that, if not birationally isotrivial, the base spaces of such families support subsheaves of log-pluridifferentials with positive Kodaira dimension. Consequently we prove that, over special base schemes, families of this type can only be birationally isotrivial and, as a result, confirm a conjecture of Kebekus and Kovács.
