Abstract: In the early 1980s Ross Geoghegan and I calculated the homology of Richard Thompson's group F as a graded abelian group. It turns out that the homology admits a natural ring structure, which I calculate in this paper. As a byproduct, I obtain the ring structure on the cohomology.

Abstract:We extend a construction of Jones to associate $(n, n)$-tangles with elements of Thompson's group $F$ and prove that it is asymptotically faithful as $n \to\infty$. Using this construction we show that the oriented Thompson group $\vec F$ admits a lax group action on a category of Khovanov's chain complexes.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we apply the theory of algebraic cohomology to study the amenability of Thompson’s group $\mathcal {F}$ . We introduce the notion of unique factorization semigroup which contains Thompson’s semigroup $\mathcal {S}$ and the free semigroup $\mathcal {F}_n$ on n ( $\geq 2$ ) generators. Let $\mathfrak {B}(\mathcal {S})$ and $\mathfrak {B}(\mathcal {F}_n)$ be the Banach algebras generated by the left regular representations of $\mathcal {S}$ and $\mathcal {F}_n$ , respectively. We prove that all derivations on $\mathfrak {B}(\mathcal {S})$ and $\mathfrak {B}(\mathcal {F}_n)$ are automatically continuous, and every derivation on $\mathfrak {B}(\mathcal {S})$ is induced by a bounded linear operator in $\mathcal {L}(\mathcal {S})$ , the weak-operator closed Banach algebra consisting of all bounded left convolution operators on $l^2(\mathcal {S})$ . Moreover, we prove that the first continuous Hochschild cohomology group of $\mathfrak {B}(\mathcal {S})$ with coefficients in $\mathcal {L}(\mathcal {S})$ vanishes. These conclusions provide positive indications for the left amenability of Thompson’s semigroup.

Hyperbolic actions of Thompson's group $F$ and generalizations

Abstract:We study the poset of hyperbolic structures on Thompson's group $F$ and its generalizations $F_n$ for $n \geq 2$. The global structure of this poset is as simple as one would expect, with the maximal non-elementary elements being two quasi-parabolic actions corresponding to well-known ascending HNN-extension expressions of $F_n$. However, the local structure turns out to be incredibly rich, in stark contrast with the situation for the $T$ and $V$ counterparts. We show that the subposet of quasi-parabolic hyperbolic structures consists of two isomorphic posets, each of which contains uncountably many subposets of \emph{lamplike} structures, which can be described combinatorially in terms of certain hyperbolic structures on related lamplighter groups. Moreover, each of these subposets, as well as intersections and complements thereof, is very large, in that it contains a copy of the power set of the natural numbers. We also prove that these uncountably many uncountable subposets are not the entire picture, indeed there exists a copy of the power set of the natural numbers consisting entirely of non-lamplike structures. We also prove that this entire vast array of hyperbolic structures on $F_n$ collapses as soon as one takes a natural semidirect product with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. These results are all proved via a detailed analysis of confining subsets, and along the way we establish a number of fundamental results in the theory of confining subsets of groups.

Abstract:Thompson's group F is the group of all increasing dyadic piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the closed unit interval. We compute Sigma^m(F) and Sigma^m(F;Z), the homotopical and homological Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariants of F, and we show that Sigma^m(F) = Sigma^m(F;Z). As an application, we show that, for every m, F has subgroups of type F_{m-1} which are not of type F_{m}.

Abstract:We consider the homology theory of étale groupoids introduced by Crainic and Moerdijk, with particular interest to groupoids arising from topological dynamical systems. We prove a Künneth formula for products of groupoids and a Poincaré-duality type result for groupoids which are principal with orbits homeomorphic to a Euclidean space. We conclude with a few example computations for systems associated to nilpotent groups such as self-similar actions, and we generalize previous homological calculations by Burke and Putnam for systems which are analogues of solenoids arising from algebraic numbers. For the latter systems, we prove the HK conjecture, even when the resulting groupoid is not ample.

Abstract:In this paper, motivated by Chen–Ruan’s stringy orbifold theory on almost complex orbifolds, we construct a new equivariant cohomology ring $${\mathscr {H}}^*_G(X)$$ for an equivariant almost complex pair (X, G), where X is a compact connected almost complex manifold, G is a connected compact Lie group which acts on X and preserves the almost complex structure.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue our study of the class of diagram groups. Simply speaking, a diagram is a labelled plane graph bounded by a pair of paths (the top path and the bottom path). To multiply two diagrams, one simply identifies the top path of one diagram with the bottom path of the other diagram, and removes pairs of "reducible" cells. Each diagram group is determined by an alphabet $X$, containing all possible labels of edges, a set of relations ${\cal R}=\{u_i=v_i\mid i=1,2,... \}$, containing all possible labels of cells, and a word $w$ over $X$ -- the label of the top and bottom paths of diagrams. Diagrams can be considered as 2-dimensional words, and diagram groups can be considered as 2-dimensional analogue of free groups. In our previous paper, we showed that the class of diagram groups contains many interesting groups including the famous R. Thompson group $F$ (it corresponds to the simplest set of relations $\{x=x^2 \}$), closed under direct and free products and some other constructions. In this paper we study mainly subgroups of diagram groups. We show that not every subgroup of a diagram group is itself a diagram group (this answers a question from the previous paper). We prove that every nilpotent subgroup of a diagram group is abelian, every abelian subgroup is free, but even the Thompson group contains solvable subgroups of any degree. We also study distortion of subgroups in diagram groups, including the Thompson group. It turnes out that centralizers of elements and abelian subgroups are always undistorted, but the Thompson group contains distorted soluble subgroups.

Abstract:Etale groupoids arise naturally as models for leaf spaces of foliations, for orbifolds, and for orbit spaces of discrete group actions. In this paper we introduce a sheaf homology theory for etale groupoids. We prove its invariance under Morita equivalence, as well as Verdier duality between Haefliger cohomology and this homology. We also discuss the relation to the cyclic and Hochschild homologies of Connes' convolution algebra of the groupoid, and derive some spectral sequences which serve as a tool for the computation of these homologies.

Representation-graded Bredon homology of elementary abelian 2-groups

Abstract:We calculate the representation-graded Bredon homology rings of all elementary abelian 2-groups with coefficients in the constant mod-2 Mackey functor. We exhibit minimal presentations for these rings as quotients of the polynomial algebra on the pre-Euler and inverse Thom classes of all nontrivial characters, subject to an explicit finite list of relations arising from orientability properties. Two corollaries of our presentation are the calculation, originally due to Holler and Kriz, of the geometric fixed point rings, and a strengthening of a calculation of Balmer and Gallauer of the localized twisted cohomology ring.

Abstract:We study the subgroups of R. J. Thompson's group F and PL o (I), the group of orientation preserving, piecewise linear self homeomorphisms of [0, 1]. We exhibit, for each non-limit ordinal α ≤ ω 2 + 1, an elementary amenable group of elementary class α (under Chou's stratification of elementary amenable groups) that is a subgroup of F and thus of PL o (I). We also give examples that negatively answer a question of Sapir about non-solvable groups in F and PL o (I).

Abstract:In a "naive" attempt to create algebraic quantum field theories on the circle, we obtain a family of unitary representations of Thompson's groups T and F for any subfactor. The Thompson group elements are the "local scale transformations" of the theory. In a simple case the coefficients of the representations are polynomial invariants of links. We show that all links arise and introduce new "oriented" subgroups $\overrightarrow F <F$ and $\overrightarrow T< T$ which allow us to produce all \emph{oriented} knots and links.

They mostly concern esimating the density of finite subgraphs in Cayley graphs of $F$ for various systems of generators, and also equations in the group ring of $F$. In particular, we prove a refined Bloch-Wigner type exact sequence over a semilocal ring (with some mild restriction on its residue fields) such that $-1\in (A^{\times})^2$ or $|A^{\times}/(A^{\times})^2|\leq 4$.

Homological stability for the ribbon Higman--Thompson groups

Abstract:We generalize the notion of asymptotic mapping class groups and allow them to surject to the Higman--Thompson groups, answering a question of Aramayona and Vlamis in the case of the Higman--Thompson groups. When the underlying surface is a disk, these new asymptotic mapping class groups can be identified with the ribbon and oriented ribbon Higman--Thompson groups. We use this model to prove that the ribbon Higman--Thompson groups satisfy homological stability, providing the first homological stability result for dense subgroups of big mapping class groups. Our result can also be treated as an extension of Szymik--Wahl's work on homological stability for the Higman--Thompson groups to the surface setting.

Finiteness properties of generalized Thompson groups via expansion sets

Abstract:We outline a general procedure that builds classifying spaces for generalized Thompson groups $\Gamma$. The construction depends on a small number of choices: (1) an inverse semigroup $S$ of partial transformations that ``locally determine" $\Gamma$; (2) an equivalence relation on certain pairs $(f,D)$, and (3) an ``expansion" rule $\mathcal{E}$. These choices determine an \emph{expansion set} $\mathcal{B}$, which is a combinatorial device that outputs a simplicial complex $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ upon which $\Gamma$ acts. Under favorable conditions, often achieved in practice, $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is contractible, and the action of $\Gamma$ has small stabilizers. The definition of $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is such that ascending and descending links in $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ can be described via formulas that depend only on the expansion rule $\mathcal{E}$. The result is to facilitate the usual computations of the connectivity of the descending link. Under natural hypotheses, one can prove that the acting group has type $F_{\infty}$. The net effect of our results is to automate results of this kind. Several applications are given; in particular, we sketch unified proofs that $V$, $nV$, Röver's group $G$, and the Lodha-Moore group have type $F_{\infty}$.

Abstract:We give a Orlik-Solomon type presentation for the cohomology ring of arrangements in a non-compact abelian Lie group. The new insight consists in comparing arrangements in different abelian groups. Our work is based on the Varchenko-Gelfand ring for real hyperplane arrangements and from that we deduce the cohomology rings of all other abelian arrangements. As by-product, we obtain a new proof of the Orlik-Solomon relations and De Concini-Procesi ones.

Characteristic classes for flat Diff(M)-foliations

Abstract:In this work we relate the known results about the homotopy type of classifying spaces for smooth foliations, with the homology and cohomology of the discrete group of diffeomorphisms of a smooth compact connected oriented manifold. The Mather-Thurston Theorem forms a bridge between the results on the homotopy types of classifying spaces and the various homology and cohomology groups that are studied. We introduce the algebraic K-theory of a manifold M that is derived from the discrete group of diffeomorphisms of M, and observe that the calculations of homotopy groups in this work are about these K-theory groups. We include a variety of remarks and open problems related to the study of the diffeomorphism groups and their homological invariants using the Mather-Thurston Theorem.

Abstract:We give new information about the relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its derived series. This yields information about how the low-dimensional homology of a topological space constrains its fundamental group. Applications are given to detecting when a set of elements of a group generates a subgroup ``large enough'' to map onto a non-abelian free solvable group, and to concordance and grope cobordism of links. We also greatly generalize several key homological results employed in recent work of Cochran-Orr-Teichner, in the context of classical knot concordance. In 1963 J. Stallings established a strong relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its lower central series quotients. In 1975 W. Dwyer extended Stallings' theorem by weakening the hypothesis on the second homology groups. The naive analogues of these theorems for the derived series are false. In 2003 the second author introduced a new characteristic series, associated to the derived series, called the torsion-free derived series. The authors previously established a precise analogue, for the torsion-free derived series, of Stallings' theorem. Here our main result is the analogue of Dwyer's theorem for the torsion-free derived series. We also prove a version of Dwyer's theorem for the rational lower central series. We apply these to give new results on the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration of the classical link concordance group.
