Abstract:We prove that categories enriched in the Thomason model structure admit a model structure that is Quillen equivalent to the Bergner model structure on simplicial categories, providing a new model for (infinity,1)-categories. Along the way, we construct model structures on modules and monoids in the Thomason model structure and prove that any model structure on the category of small categories that has the same weak equivalences as the Thomason model structure is not a cartesian model structure.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain several model structures on {\bf DblCat}, the category of small double categories. Our model structures have three sources. We first transfer across a categorification-nerve adjunction. Secondly, we view double categories as internal categories in {\bf Cat} and take as our weak equivalences various internal equivalences defined via Grothendieck topologies. Thirdly, {\bf DblCat} inherits a model structure as a category of algebras over a 2-monad. Some of these model structures coincide and the different points of view give us further results about cofibrant replacements and cofibrant objects. As part of this program we give explicit descriptions and discuss properties of free double categories, quotient double categories, colimits of double categories, several nerves, and horizontal categorification.

Abstract:We develop a constructive model of homotopy type theory in a Quillen model category that classically presents the usual homotopy theory of spaces. Our model is based on presheaves over the cartesian cube category, a well-behaved Eilenberg-Zilber category. The key innovation is an additional equivariance condition in the specification of the cubical Kan fibrations, which can be described as the pullback of an interval-based class of uniform fibrations in the category of symmetric sequences of cubical sets. The main technical results in the development of our model have been formalized in a computer proof assistant.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a weakly idempotent complete extriangulated category. In contrast with the Hovey correspondence of admissible model structures on weakly idempotent complete exact categories from two complete cotorsion pairs, we give a construction of model structures on $\mathcal{C}$ from only one complete cotorsion pair. Our main result not only generalizes the work by Beligiannis-Reiten and Cui-Lu-Zhang, but also provides methods to construct model structures from silting objects of $\mathcal{C}$ and co-$t$-structures in triangulated categories.

Abstract:We construct two model structures, whose fibrant objects capture the notions of discrete fibrations and of Grothendieck fibrations over a category $\mathcal{C}$. For the discrete case, we build a model structure on the slice $\mathrm{Cat}_{/\mathcal{C}}$, Quillen equivalent to the projective model structure on $[\mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathrm{Set}]$ via the classical category of elements construction. The cartesian case requires the use of markings, and we define a model structure on the slice $\mathrm{Cat}^+_{/\mathcal{C}}$, Quillen equivalent to the projective model structure on $[\mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathrm{Cat}]$ via a marked version of the Grothendieck construction. We further show that both of these model structures have the expected interactions with their $\infty$-counterparts; namely, with the contravariant model structure on $\mathrm{sSet}_{/ N\mathcal{C}}$ and with Lurie's cartesian model structure on $\mathrm{sSet}^+_{/ N\mathcal{C}}$.

Abstract:We define model structures on exact categories which we call exact model structures. We look at the relationship between these model structures and cotorsion pairs on the exact category. In particular, when the underlying category is weakly idempotent complete we get Hovey's one-to-one correspondence between model structures and complete cotorsion pairs. We classify the right and left homotopy relation in terms of the cotorsion pairs and look at examples of exact model structures. In particular, we see that given any hereditary abelian model category, the full subcategories of cofibrant, fibrant and cofibrant-fibrant subobjects each have natural exact model structures equivalent to the original model structure. These model structures each have interesting characteristics. For example, the cofibrant-fibrant subobjects form a Frobenius category whose stable category is the same thing as the homotopy category of its model structure.

Abstract:We establish a Quillen equivalence between the Kan-Quillen model structure and a model structure, derived from a cubical model of homotopy type theory, on the category of cartesian cubical sets with one connection. We thereby identify a second model structure which both constructively models homotopy type theory and presents infinity-groupoids, the first example being the equivariant cartesian model of Awodey-Cavallo-Coquand-Riehl-Sattler.

Abstract:Extending previous work, we define monoidal algebraic model structures and give examples. The main structural component is what we call an algebraic Quillen two-variable adjunction; the principal technical work is to develop the category theory necessary to characterize them. Our investigations reveal an important role played by “cellularity”–loosely, the property of a cofibration being a relative cell complex, not simply a retract of such–which we particularly emphasize. A main result is a simple criterion which shows that algebraic Quillen two-variable adjunctions correspond precisely to cell structures on the pushout-products of generating (trivial) cofibrations. As a corollary, we discover that the familiar monoidal model structures on categories and simplicial sets admit this extra algebraic structure.

Abstract:Many structures of interest in two-dimensional category theory have aspects that are inherently strict. This strictness is not a limitation, but rather plays a fundamental role in the theory of such structures. For instance, a monoidal fibration is - crucially - a strict monoidal functor, rather than a pseudo or lax monoidal functor. Other examples include monoidal double categories, double fibrations, and intercategories. We provide an explanation for this phenomenon from the perspective of enhanced 2-categories, which are 2-categories having a distinguished subclass of 1-cells representing the strict morphisms. As part of our development, we introduce enhanced 2-categorical limit sketches and explain how this setting addresses shortcomings in the theory of 2-categorical limit sketches. In particular, we establish the symmetry of internalisation for such structures, entailing, for instance, that a monoidal double category is equivalently a pseudomonoid in an enhanced 2-category of double categories, or a pseudocategory in an enhanced 2-category of monoidal categories.

Abstract:Model structures for many different kinds of functor calculus can be obtained by applying a theorem of Bousfield to a suitable category of functors. In this paper, we give a general criterion for when model categories obtained via this approach are cofibrantly generated. Our examples recover the homotopy functor and $n$-excisive model structures of Biedermann and Röndigs, with different proofs, but also include a model structure for the discrete functor calculus of Bauer, Johnson, and McCarthy.

Abstract:A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of tricategories.

Flat model structures for accessible exact categories

Abstract:We develop techniques for constructing model structures on chain complexes valued in accessible exact categories, and apply this to show that for a closed symmetric monoidal, locally presentable exact category $\mathpzc{E}$ with exact filtered colimits and enough flat objects, the flat cotorsion pair on $\mathpzc{E}$ induces an exact model structure on $\mathrm{Ch}(\mathpzc{E})$. Further we show that when enriched over $\mathbb{Q}$ such categories furnish convenient settings for homotopical algebra - in particular that they are Homotopical Algebra Contexts, and admit powerful Koszul duality theorems. As an example, we consider categories of sheaves valued in monoidal locally presentable exact categories.

Simplicial $C_2$-Isovariant Homotopy

Abstract:This article presents a novel approach to construct a model category structure designed to model the homotopy theory of spaces equipped with an action by the group $C_2$, where morphisms are considered to be isovariant. Our methodology centers on simplicial techniques. We replace the conventional simplex category $\Delta$ with a modified category $C_2 \Delta$ and then delve into the study of presheaves of sets on $C_2 \Delta$. To establish the model category structure we employ Cisinski's methods for model structures in categories of presheaves. In particular, we use an analogous idea to the one employed by Cisinski and Moerdjik in the construction of a model category structure for Dendroidal Sets (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0902.1954" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0902.1954">arXiv:0902.1954</a>). Our approach distinguishes itself from prior work, such as Yeakel's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1907.12135" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1907.12135">arXiv:1907.12135</a>) which primarily focuses on a more topological context and, brings a new perspective to the study of isovariant homotopy theory for $C_2$-spaces.

Abstract:In contrast with the Hovey correspondence of abelian model structures from two complete cotorsion pairs, Beligiannis and Reiten give a construction of model structures on abelian categories from only one complete cotorsion pair. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to weakly idempotent complete exact categories, by adding the condition of heredity of the complete cotorsion pair. In fact, even for abelian categories, this condition of heredity should be added. This construction really gives model structures which are not necessarily exact in the sense of Gillespie. The correspondence of Beligiannis and Reiten of weakly projective model structures also holds for weakly idempotent complete exact categories.

Abstract:We give a fully constructive proof that there is a proper cartesian $\omega$-combinatorial model structure on the category of simplicial sets, whose generating cofibrations and trivial cofibrations are the usual boundary inclusion and horn inclusion. The main difference with classical mathematics is that constructively not all monomorphisms are cofibrations (only those satisfying some decidability conditions) and not every object is cofibrant. The proof relies on three main ingredients: First, our construction of a weak model categories on simplicial sets, then the interplay with the semi-simplicial versions of this weak model structure and finally, the use of Kan Ex$^{\infty}$-functor, and more precisely of S.Moss' direct proof that the natural map $X \rightarrow $ Ex$^{\infty} X$ is an anodyne morphism, which we show is constructive when $X$ is cofibrant.

Abstract:Diagrammatic sets admit a notion of internal equivalence in the sense of coinductive weak invertibility, with similar properties to its analogue in strict $\omega$-categories. We construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are diagrammatic sets in which every round pasting diagram is equivalent to a single cell -- its weak composite -- and propose them as a model of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories. For each $n < \infty$, we then construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are those $(\infty, \infty)$-categories whose cells in dimension $> n$ are all weakly invertible. We show that weak equivalences between fibrant objects are precisely morphisms that are essentially surjective on cells of all dimensions. On the way to this result, we also construct model structures for $(\infty, n)$-categories on marked diagrammatic sets, which split into a coinductive and an inductive case when $n = \infty$, and prove that they are Quillen equivalent to the unmarked model structures when $n < \infty$ and in the coinductive case of $n = \infty$. Finally, we prove that the $(\infty, 0)$-model structure is Quillen equivalent to the classical model structure on simplicial sets. This establishes the first proof of the homotopy hypothesis for a model of $\infty$-groupoids defined as $(\infty, \infty)$-categories whose cells in dimension $> 0$ are all weakly invertible.

Abstract:We study properties of the cubical Joyal model structures on cubical sets by means of a combinatorial construction which allows for convenient comparisons between categories of cubical sets with and without symmetries. In particular, we prove that the cubical Joyal model structures on categories of cubical sets with connections are cartesian monoidal. Our techniques also allow us to prove that the geometric product of cubical sets (with or without connections) is symmetric up to natural weak equivalence in the cubical Joyal model structure, and to obtain induced model structures for $(\infty,1)$-categories on cubical sets with symmetries.

Abstract:The $S$-model category structures on filtered chain complexes and bicomplexes were introduced by Cirici, Egas Santander, Livernet and Whitehouse and later generalised by this author. In this paper we show they are left proper, cellular and stable model categories. We use these properties and the Cellularization Principle of Greenlees and Shipley to show that an adjunction with right adjoint the product totalisation functor from bicomplexes to filtered chains is a Quillen equivalence. Combined with other known Quillen equivalences between filtered chains this shows these model categories all present the same homotopy category. We also construct a distributive lattice whose elements are the $S$-model categories of filtered chain complexes.
