Abstract:Computing minimum distance between two objects is very important in a lot of areas such as CAD/CAM computer graphics and collision detection. In 2002, computing minimum distance between two ellipsoid was reduced into the problem of solving two bivariate polynomial equations with degrees at most 12 by Lennerz and those of degrees 8 and 16 by Sohn et al. In this paper, it is converted into the problem of solving two triple polynomial equations with degrees no larger than 2 and 9. This result is obtained by using the offset surface and the Lagrange techniques. One of the two points where the minimum distance occurs is obtained by tracing the above two equations. The minimum distance is then a root of a quadratic equation, and the other point could be calculated by an explicit formula.

The ellipsoid method redux

Abstract:We reconsider the ellipsoid method for linear inequalities. Using the ellipsoid representation of Burrell and Todd, we show the method can be viewed as coordinate descent on the volume of an enclosing ellipsoid, or on a potential function, or on both. The method can be enhanced by improving the lower bounds generated and by allowing the weights on inequalities to be decreased as well as increased, while still guaranteeing a decrease in volume. Three different initialization schemes are described, and preliminary computational results given. Despite the improvements discussed, these are not encouraging.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Exploiting Sign Symmetries in Minimizing Sums of Rational Functions

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the problem of minimizing a sum of rational functions over a basic semialgebraic set. We provide a hierarchy of sum of squares (SOS) relaxations that is dual to the generalized moment problem approach due to Bugarin, Henrion, and Lasserre. The investigation of the dual SOS aspect offers two benefits: 1) it allows us to conduct a convergence rate analysis for the hierarchy; 2) it leads to a sign symmetry adapted hierarchy consisting of block-diagonal semidefinite relaxations. When the problem possesses correlative sparsity as well as sign symmetries, we propose sparse semidefinite relaxations by exploiting both structures. Various numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of our approach. Finally, an application to maximizing sums of generalized Rayleigh quotients is presented.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate error bounds for convex polynomials. We prove that for a convex polynomial f in n variables which is not everywhere positive and which is not constant on any affine subspace, either f is a sum of a convex polynomial in fewer variables and a linear form with negative coefficients or the negativity set of f is compact. As an application, we deduce various types of error bounds for unconstrained and polyhedral-constrained convex polynomials.
The Sharp Bound for the Number of Real Solutions to Polynomial Equation Systems

Abstract:This paper solves the open problem on the sharp bound for the number of isolated solutions in $\mathbf{R}_*^n$ to the real system of $n$ polynomial equations in $n$ variables, i.e., the real $n$ by $n$ fewnomial system. For an unmixed system of $n$ polynomial equations in $n$ variables, this paper shows that the number of its positive solutions in $\mathbf{R}_*^n$ is sharply bounded by that of the simplex configurations in the triangulation of its support generically. The proof is based on a homotopic argument and an inductive triangulation of the support of the system via a hierarchy of pyramid configurations of different orders. For the mixed system of $n$ polynomial equations in $n$ variables, this paper shows that the maximal number of positive solutions in $\mathbf{R}_*^n$ to the systems with the same support is a symmetric multilinear function of the support generically and hence can be computed via the polarization identity.

Abstract:Recently, variable selection and sparse reconstruction are solved by finding an optimal solution of a minimization model, where the objective function is the sum of a data-fitting term in l(2) norm and a regularization term in l(p) norm (0 < p < 1). Since it is a nonconvex model, most algorithms for solving the problem can provide only an approximate local optimal solution, where nonzero entries in the solution cannot be identified theoretically. In this paper, we establish lower bounds for the absolute value of nonzero entries in every local optimal solution of the model, which can be used to indentify zero entries precisely in any numerical solution. Therefore, we have developed a lower bound theorem to classify zero and nonzero entries in every local solution. These lower boundsclearly show the relationship between the sparsity of the solution and the choice of the regularization parameter and norm so that our theorem can be used for selecting desired model parameters and norms. Furthermore, we also develop error bounds for verifying the accuracy of numerical solutions of the l(2)-(p) minimization model. To demonstrate applications of our theory, we propose a hybrid orthogonal matching pursuit-smoothing gradient (OMP-SG) method for solving the nonconvex, non-Lipschitz continuous l(2)-l(p) minimization problem. Computational results show the effectiveness of the lower bounds for identifying nonzero entries in numerical solutions and the OMP-SG method for finding a high quality numerical solution.

Abstract:The problem of finding a least squares solution for a system of bilinear equations is investigated. Suffcient conditions to have a unique minimum are given in the cases of random inputs. Three methods, the normalized iterative method, the over-parametrization method and the numerical method are presented for solving the least squares problem along with their convergence properties. Simulation examples are provided.

Abstract:The ellipsoid method is an algorithm that solves the (weak) feasibility and linear optimization problems for convex sets by making oracle calls to their (weak) separation problem. We observe that the previously known method for showing that this reduction can be done in fixed-point logic with counting (FPC) for linear and semidefinite programs applies to any family of explicitly bounded convex sets. We use this observation to show that the exact feasibility problem for semidefinite programs is expressible in the infinitary version of FPC. As a corollary we get that, for the isomorphism problem, the Lasserre/Sums-of-Squares semidefinite programming hierarchy of relaxations collapses to the Sherali-Adams linear programming hierarchy, up to a small loss in the degree.

Abstract:We consider the problem of approximating nonconvex quadratic optimization with ellipsoid constraints (ECQP). We show some SDP-based approximation bounds for special cases of (ECQP) can be improved by trivially applying the extened Pataki's procedure. The main result of this paper is to give a new analysis on approximating (ECQP) by the SDP relaxation, which greatly improves Tseng's result [SIAM Journal Optimization, 14, 268-283, 2003]. As an application, we strictly improve the approximation ratio for the assignment-polytope constrained quadratic program.
