Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.
Controlling chaos in wave-particle interactions

Abstract:We analyze the behavior of a relativistic particle moving under the influence of a uniform magnetic field and a stationary electrostatic wave. We work with a set of pulsed waves that allows us to obtain an exact map for the system. We also use a method of control for near-integrable Hamiltonians that consists in the addition of a small and simple control term to the system. This control term creates invariant tori in phase space that prevent chaos from spreading to large regions and make the controlled dynamics more regular. We show numerically that the control term just slightly modifies the system but is able to drastically reduce chaos with a low additional cost of energy. Moreover, we discuss how the control of chaos and the consequent recovery of regular trajectories in phase space are useful to improve regular particle acceleration.

Abstract:An analytical study of charged particle dynamics in the presence of an elliptically polarized electromagnetic wave and a uniform axial magnetic field is presented. It is found that a charged particle resonantly gains energy for gω0/ω′=±1, ω0, and ω′, respectively, being the cyclotron frequency of the charged particle in the external magnetic field and Doppler-shifted frequency of the wave seen by the particle, and g=±1, respectively, correspond to right and left-handedness of polarization. An explicit solution of the governing equation is also presented in terms of particle position or laboratory time, for the specific case of resonant energy gain in a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. These explicit position- or time-dependent expressions are useful for better insight into various phenomena, viz., cosmic ray generation, microwave generation, plasma heating, and particle acceleration.

Dynamical properties of a particle in a wave packet: scaling invariance and boundary crisis

Abstract:Some dynamical properties present in a problem concerning the acceleration of particles in a wave packet are studied. The dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two-dimensional area preserving map. We show that the phase space is mixed in the sense that there are regular and chaotic regions coexisting. We use a connection with the standard map in order to find the position of the first invariant spanning curve which borders the chaotic sea. We find that the position of the first invariant spanning curve increases as a power of the control parameter with the exponent 2/3. The standard deviation of the kinetic energy of an ensemble of initial conditions obeys a power law as a function of time, and saturates after some crossover. Scaling formalism is used in order to characterize the chaotic region close to the transition from integrability to nonintegrability and a relationship between the power law exponents is derived. The formalism can be applied in many different systems with mixed phase space. Then, dissipation is introduced into the model and therefore the property of area preservation is broken, and consequently attractors are observed. We show that after a small change of the dissipation, the chaotic attractor as well as its basin of attraction are destroyed, thus leading the system to experience a boundary crisis. The transient after the crisis follows a power law with exponent -2.

Abstract:Motivated by the precedent study of Ordenes-Huanca and Velazquez [JSTAT \textbf{093303} (2016)], we address the study of a simple model of a pure non-neutral plasma: a system of identical non-relativistic charged particles confined under an external harmonic field with frequency $\omega$. We perform the equilibrium thermo-statistical analysis in the framework of continuum approximation. This study reveals the existence of two asymptotic limits: the known Brillouin steady state at zero temperature, and the gas of harmonic oscillators in the limit of high temperatures. The non-extensive character of this model is evidenced by the associated thermodynamic limit, $N\rightarrow+\infty: U/N^{7/3}=const$, which coincides with the thermodynamic limit of a self-gravitating system of non-relativistic point particles in presence of Newtonian gravitation. Afterwards, the dynamics of this model is analyzed through numerical simulations. It is verified the agreement of thermo-statistical estimations and the temporal expectation values of the same macroscopic observables. The system chaoticity is addressed via numerical computation of Lyapunov exponents in the framework of the known \emph{tangent dynamics}. The temperature dependence of Lyapunov exponent $\lambda$ approaches to zero in the two asymptotic limits of this model, reaching its maximum during the transit between them. The chaos of the present model is very strong, since its rate is faster than the characteristic timescale of the microscopic dynamics $\tau_{dyn}=1/\omega$. A qualitative analysis suggests that such a strong chaoticity cannot be explained in terms of collision events because of their respective characteristic timescales are quite different, $\tau_{ch}\propto \tau_{dyn}/N^{1/4}$ and $\tau_{coll}\propto \tau_{dyn}$.

Abstract:The classical dynamics of a charged particle traveling in a laser field modeled by an elliptically polarized monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave is discussed within the time reparametrization invariant form of the non-relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi theory. The exact parametric representation for a particle's orbit in an arbitrary plane wave background beyond the dipole approximation and including effect of the magnetic field is derived. For an elliptically polarized monochromatic plane wave the particle's trajectory, as an explicit function of the laboratory frame's time, is given in terms of the Jacobian elliptic functions, whose modulus is proportional to the laser's intensity and depends on the polarization of radiation. It is shown that the system exposes the ``intensity duality'', correspondence between the motion in the backgrounds with various intensities. In virtue of the modular properties of the Jacobian functions, by starting with the representative ``fundamental solution'' and applying a certain modular transformations one can obtain the particle's orbit in the monochromatic plane wave background with arbitrarily prescribed characteristics.

Abstract:We study the large-scale dynamics of charged particles in a rapidly oscillating field and formulate its classical and quantum effective theory description. The high-order perturbative results for the effective action are presented. Remarkably, the action models the effects of post-Newtonian general relativity on the motion of nonrelativistic particles, with the values of the emergent curvature and speed of light determined by the field spatial distribution and frequency. Abstract:The present article is devoted to the study of the dynamics of narrowband wave fields within the non-integrable Schamel equation, which plays an important role in plasma physics, wave dynamics in metamaterials, and electrical circuits. A Monte Carlo approach is used to obtain a large number of random independent realizations of the wave fields, allowing for an investigation of the evolution of the following statistical characteristics: spectra, moments, and distribution functions. The simulations are conducted for different values of the Ursell number (the ratio of nonlinearity to dispersion) to study the impact of nonlinearity and dispersion on the processes under consideration.

Abstract:In continuation of our previous study [Phys. Rev. D 99 (2019) 4, 044012], we investigate the motion of charged particles in the $\gamma$-metric. We provide some examples of curled trajectories in the equatorial plane and escape trajectories outside the equatorial plane. Finally, we consider harmonic oscillations due to small displacements from stable circular orbits on the equatorial plane and compute the epicyclic frequencies for different values of deformation parameter and magnetic field.

Abstract:There is a revival of the problem of how a relativistic particle with spin moves through an electromagnetic field. Our paper focuses on the spin-dependent dynamics of electrons in linearly polarized laser fields based on the Dirac equation and a classical spin model. It is proved that an electron at rest undergoes a three-dimensional motion moving out of the polarization-propagation plane when the initial spin is perpendicular to the magnetic field. We make a comprehensive investigation of the dynamics of quantum wave packets and classical electrons in both plane-wave and standing-wave fields. The wave packet travels in accordance with its center of mass in a plane-wave field but spreads heavily in a standing-wave field. The ensembles of classical electrons turn out to well simulate the quantum wave-packet dynamics in the standing-wave fields. We give the extended calculations of the electron dynamics with spin in the standing-wave field in the chaotic regime and find the quantum correspondence to the classical chaotic dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate the curved-spacetime dynamics of charged spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field and propagating in superposed states of different masses. For that purpose, we make use of a Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation of the Dirac equation with a minimal coupling to the Maxwell field in curved spacetime. We obtain the spin dynamics as well as the deviation from geodesic motion of such particles. The problem of having the mass eigenstates experience different proper times, as opposed to the case of neutral particles, is here dealt with by first extracting the second-order differential equation obeyed by each superposition. This strategy proves to be not only powerful, but also very economical.

Abstract:The main object of this paper is to study the bifurcation, chaotic pattern and traveling wave solution of the perturbed stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with generalized anti-cubic law nonlinearity and spatio-temporal dispersion. A traveling wave transformation is used to simplified the perturbed stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation into ordinary differential equation. The dynamic behavior of two-dimensional planar dynamical systems and their perturbed systems are studied, and bifurcation, phase portrait, and Poincaré section are presented. Furthermore, traveling wave solutions included Jacobian function solutions, trigonometric function solutions and hyperbolic function solutions are constructed.

Abstract:We generalize the celebrated semiclassical wave-packet approach from the adiabatic to the nonadiabatic regime. A unified description covering both of these regimes is particularly desired for systems with spatially varying band structures where band gaps of various sizes are simultaneously present, e.g., in moiré patterns. For a single wave packet, alternative to the previous derivation by Lagrangian variational approach, we show that the same semiclassical equations of motion can be obtained by introducing a spatial-texture-induced force operator similar to the Ehrenfest theorem. For semiclassically computing the current, the ensemble of wave packets based on adiabatic dynamics is shown to well correspond to a phase-space fluid for which the fluid's mass and velocity are two distinguishable properties. This distinction is not inherited to the ensemble of wave packets with the nonadiabatic dynamics. We extend the adiabatic kinetic theory to the nonadiabatic regime by taking into account decoherence, whose joint action with electric field favors certain forms of interband coherence. The steady-state density matrix as a function of the phase-space variables is then phenomenologically obtained for calculating the current. The result, applicable with a finite electric field, expectedly reproduces the known adiabatic limit by taking the electric field to be infinitesimal, and therefore attains a unified description from the adiabatic to the nonadiabatic situations.

Abstract:We present a theoretical approach to study the dynamics of spherical, cylindrical and ellipsoidal charge distributions under their self-Coulomb field and a stochastic force due to collisions and random motions of charged particles. The approach is based on finding the current density of the charge distribution from the charge-current continuity equation and determining the drift velocities of the particles. The latter can be used either to derive the Lagrangian of the system, or to write Newton's equation of motion with the Lorentz force. We develop a kinetic theory to include the stochastic force due to random motions of electrons in our model. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, we apply it to various charge distributions and compare our results to N-body simulations. We show that our method reproduces the well-known emittance term in the envelope equation of uniform spherical and cylindrical charge distributions with correct coefficients. We use our model for the gravitational collapse of an ideal gas as well as the cyclotron dynamics of a cylindrical charge distribution in a uniform magnetic field and propose a method to measure the emittance of electron beams.

Abstract:The dynamics of a metallic particle confined between charged walls is studied. One wall is fixed and the other moves smoothly and periodically in time. Dissipation is considered by assuming a friction produced by the contact between the particle and a rough surface. We investigate the phase space of the simplified and complete versions of the model. Our results include (i) coexistence of islands of regular motion with an attractor located at the low energy portion of phase space in the complete model; and (ii) coexistence of attractors with trajectories that present unlimited energy growth in the simplified model.

Numerical study of chiral plasma instability within the classical statistical field theory approach

Abstract:We report on a numerical study of real-time dynamics of electromagnetically interacting chirally imbalanced lattice Dirac fermions within the classical statistical field theory approach. Namely, we perform exact simulations of the real-time quantum evolution of fermionic fields coupled to classical electromagnetic fields, which are in turn coupled to the vacuum expectation value of the fermionic electric current. We use Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian for fermions, and non-compact action for the gauge field. In general, we observe that the backreaction of fermions on the electromagnetic field prevents the system from acquiring chirality imbalance. In the case of chirality pumping in parallel electric and magnetic fields, electric field is screened by the produced on-shell fermions and the accumulation of chirality is hence stopped. In the case of evolution with initially present chirality imbalance, axial charge tends to transform to helicity of electromagnetic field. By performing simulations on large lattices we show that in most cases this decay process is accompanied by the inverse cascade phenomenon which transfers energy from short-wavelength to long-wavelength electromagnetic fields. In some simulations, however, we observe a very clear signature of inverse cascade for the helical magnetic fields which is not accompanied by the axial charge decay. This suggests that the relation between inverse cascade and axial charge decay is not as straightforward as predicted by the simplest form of anomalous Maxwell equations.

Quantum chaos in a harmonic waveguide with scatterers

Abstract:A set of zero-range scatterers along its axis lifts the integrability of a harmonic waveguide. Effective solution of the Schrödinger equation for this model is possible due to the separable nature of the scatterers and millions of eigenstates can be calculated using modest computational resources. Integrability-chaos transition can be explored as the model chaoticity increases with the number of scatterers and their strengths. The regime of complete quantum chaos and eigenstate thermalization can be approached with 32 scatterers. This is confirmed by properties of energy spectra, the inverse participation ratio, and fluctuations of observable expectation values.

A new framework for particle-wave interaction

Abstract:In plasma physics, collisionless charged particles are transported following the dynamics of a meanfield Vlasov equation with a self-consistent electric field generated by the charge density. Due to the long range interaction between particles, the generating electric field oscillates and disperses like a Klein-Gordon dispersive wave, known in the physical literature as plasma oscillations or Langmuir's oscillatory waves. The oscillatory electric field then in turn drives particles. Despite its great physical importance, the question of whether such a nonlinear particle-wave interaction would remain regular globally and be damped in the large time has been an outstanding open problem. In this paper, we propose a new framework to resolve this exact nonlinear interaction. Specifically, we employ the framework to establish the large time behavior and scattering of solutions to the nonlinear Vlasov-Klein-Gordon system in the small initial data regime. The novelty of this work is to provide a detailed physical space description of particles moving in an oscillatory field and to resolve oscillations for the electric field generated by the collective interacting particles. This appears to be the first such a result analyzing oscillations in the physical phase space $\mathbb{R}^3_x\times \mathbb{R}_v^3$.

The scheme is a generalization of the low-frequency (less than the cyclotron frequency) gyrokinetic formalism of Rutherford and Frieman as well as Taylor and Hastie to arbitrary frequencies. Governing integral wave equations for slab plasmas with magnetic shear as well as axisymmetric tokamaks are then derived to illustrate the applications.
