Abstract:Given a perverse sheaf on the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties or the moduli stack of smooth curves with n marked points over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that the (orbifold) Euler characteristic is nonnegative. For constant coefficients, this follows immediately from formulas of Harer-Zagier and Harder. Our proof is different and in the case of abelian varieties uses log Dubson-Kashiwara plus the fact that Hodge bundles are nef. For curves, we require an additional inequality established using Beilinson's gluing construction. The first main result is shown to be false in positive characteristic.

Abstract:Relying on the formalism developed by Alexander Beilinson and Takeshi Saito, we compute the characteristic cycle of an external symmetric power of a tame étale sheaf on a curve. This generalizes a result of Gérard Laumon in characteristic 0 and leads to a result of local acyclicity of the Abel-Jacobi morphism, due to Pierre Deligne and motivated by his geometric approach to the product formula for the determinant of cohomology (epsilon factor).

Abstract:In this paper, we will compute the non-abelian cohomology of the universal complete curve in positive characteristic. This extends Hain's result on the non-abelian cohomology of generic curves in characteristic zero to positive characteristics. Furthermore, we will prove that the exact sequence of etale fundamental groups of the universal n-punctured curve in positive characteristic does not split.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Motivic Euler Characteristic of Nearby Cycles and a Generalized Quadratic Conductor Formula

Abstract:We compute the motivic Euler characteristic of Ayoub's nearby cycles spectrum in terms of strata of a semi-stable reduction, for a degeneration to multiple semi-quasi-homogeneous singularities. This allows us to compare the local picture at the singularities with the global conductor formula for hypersurfaces developed by Levine, Pepin Lehalleur and Srinivas, revealing that the formula is local in nature, thus extending it to the more general setting considered in this paper. The result is a quadratic refinement to the Milnor number formula with multiple singularities.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, we give a bound for the wild ramification of the monodromy action on the nearby cycles complex of a locally constant étale sheaf on the generic fiber of a smooth scheme over an equal characteristic trait in terms of Abbes and Saito’s logarithmic ramification filtration. This provides a positive answer to the main conjecture in [24] for smooth morphisms in equal characteristic. We also study the ramification along vertical divisors of étale sheaves on relative curves and abelian schemes over a trait.

Abstract:Recently, the singular support and the characteristic cycle of an étale sheaf on a smooth variety over a perfect field are constructed by Beilinson and Saito, respectively. In this article, we extend the singular support to a relative situation. As an application, we prove the generic constancy for singular supports and characteristic cycles of étale sheaves on a smooth fibration. Meanwhile, we show the failure of the lower semi-continuity of characteristic cycles in a higher relative dimension case, which is different from Deligne and Laumon’s result in the relative curve case.

Abstract:A conjecture, recently stated by Flach and Morin, relates the action of the monodromy on the Galois invariant part of the p-adic Beilinson-Hyodo-Kato cohomology of the generic fiber of a scheme defined over a DVR of mixed characteristic to (the cohomology of) its special fiber. We prove the conjecture in the case the special fiber, of the given arithmetic scheme, is also a fiber of a geometric family over a curve in positive characteristic.

Abstract:We introduce the theory of local and global monodromies of polynomials in cohomology groups in various geometric situations, focusing on its relations with toric geometry and motivic Milnor fibers, and moreover in the modern languages of nearby and vanishing cycle functors. Equivariant mixed Hodge numbers of motivic Milnor fibers will be described in terms of Newton polyhedra of polynomials.

Abstract:Using Fourier-Mukai transformations, we prove some results about the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics. This ring was determined by Atiyah in characteristic zero, who showed that it is a polynomial ring in one variable. It turns out that the situation in characteristic p>0 is completely different and rather bizarre: the ring is nonnoetherian and contains a subring whose spectrum contains infinitely many copies of Spec(Z), which are glued with successively higher and higher infinitesimal identification at the point corresponding to the prime p.

Abstract:We show that the nearby cycles functor for the $p$-adic Hecke stack at parahoric level is perverse t-exact, by developing a theory of Wakimoto filtrations at Iwahori level, and that it lifts to the $\mathbb{E}_1$-center. We apply these tools to construct the Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov functor for $p$-adic affine flag varieties at Iwahori level, and prove that it is an equivalence for type $A$ groups.

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

F-characteristic cycle of a rank one sheaf on an arithmetic surface

Abstract:We prove the rationality of the characteristic form for a degree one character of the Galois group of an abelian extension of henselian discrete valuation fields. We prove the integrality of the characteristic form for a rank one sheaf on a regular excellent scheme. These properties are shown by reducing to the corresponding properties of the refined Swan conductor proved by Kato. We define the F-characteristic cycle of a rank one sheaf on an arithmetic surface as a cycle on the FW-cotangent bundle using the characteristic form on the basis of the computation of the characteristic cycle in the equal characteristic case by Yatagawa. The rationality and the integrality of the characteristic form are necessary for the definition of the F-characteristic cycle. We prove the intersection of the F-characteristic cycle with the 0-section computes the Swan conductor of cohomology of the generic fiber.

Abstract:A result of Green and Griffiths states that for the generic curve $C$ of genus $g \geq 4$ with the canonical divisor $K$, its Faber--Pandharipande 0-cycle $K\times K-(2g-2)K_\Delta$ on $C\times C$ is nontorsion in the Chow group of rational equivalence classes. For Shimura curves, however, we show that their Faber--Pandharipande 0-cycles are rationally equivalent to 0. This is predicted by a conjecture of Beilinson and Bloch.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime. In this paper we develop a new kind of anticyclotomic local $\pm$-Iwasawa theory at $p$ for Hecke characters of quadratic imaginary fields which is valid for all ramification types of $p$ (split, inert and ramified). As an application we deduce the converse of Gross-Zagier-Kolyvagin theorem for these CM forms, which states that Selmer rank one implies analytic rank one. To carry out the Iwasawa theory argument we employ a recent construction of a new type of $p$-adic $L$-function by Andreatta-Iovita, and generalized by Yangyu Fan to Shimura curves in the Appendix, and a ``virtual Heenger family'' made via a limiting procedure from a Heegner family along Coleman-Mazur eigencurve constructed by Jetchev-Loeffler-Zerbes.

Abstract:We prove that, on a smooth, connected variety in characteristic zero admitting a rational point, local systems of geometric origin are stable under extension in the category of all local systems. As a consequence of this, we obtain a (Nori) motivic strengthening of Hain's theorem on Malcev completions of monodromy representations. Our methods are Tannakian, and rely on an abstract criterion for ``Malcev completeness'', which is proved in the first part of the paper. A couple of secondary applications of this criterion are given: an alternative proof of D'Addezio--Esnault's theorem, which says that local systems of Hodge origin are stable under extension in the category of all local systems; a generalisation of the theorem of Hain, mentioned above, which also affirms a conjecture of Arapura; and an alternative proof of a theorem of Lazda, which under suitable assumptions gives an isomorphism between the relative unipotent de Rham fundamental group and the unipotent de Rham fundamental group of the special fibre.

Abstract:Replacing symmetric powers by divided powers and working over Witt vectors instead of ground fields, I generalize Kawamatas T^1-lifting theorem to characteristic p>0. Combined with the work of Deligne-Illusie on degeneration of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences, this gives unobstructedness for certain Calabi-Yau varieties with free crystalline cohomology modules.
