Abstract:Gr{ö}bner bases is one the most powerful tools in algorithmic non-linear algebra. Their computation is an intrinsically hard problem with a complexity at least single exponential in the number of variables. However, in most of the cases, the polynomial systems coming from applications have some kind of structure. For example , several problems in computer-aided design, robotics, vision, biology , kinematics, cryptography, and optimization involve sparse systems where the input polynomials have a few non-zero terms. Our approach to exploit sparsity is to embed the systems in a semigroup algebra and to compute Gr{ö}bner bases over this algebra. Up to now, the algorithms that follow this approach benefit from the sparsity only in the case where all the polynomials have the same sparsity structure, that is the same Newton polytope. We introduce the first algorithm that overcomes this restriction. Under regularity assumptions, it performs no redundant computations. Further, we extend this algorithm to compute Gr{ö}bner basis in the standard algebra and solve sparse polynomials systems over the torus $(C*)^n$. The complexity of the algorithm depends on the Newton polytopes.

Abstract:In this article we present two new algorithms to compute the Groebner basis of an ideal that is invariant under certain permutations of the ring variables and which are both implemented in SINGULAR (cf. [DGPS12]). The first and major algorithm is most performant over finite fields whereas the second algorithm is a probabilistic modification of the modular computation of Groebner bases based on the articles by Arnold (cf. [A03]), Idrees, Pfister, Steidel (cf. [IPS11]) and Noro, Yokoyama (cf. [NY12], [Y12]). In fact, the first algorithm that mainly uses the given symmetry, improves the necessary modular calculations in positive characteristic in the second algorithm. Particularly, we could, for the first time even though probabilistic, compute the Groebner basis of the famous ideal of cyclic 9-roots (cf. [BF91]) over the rationals with SINGULAR.

Abstract:Signature-based algorithms have become a standard approach for computing Gröbner bases in commutative polynomial rings. However, so far, it was not clear how to extend this concept to the setting of noncommutative polynomials in the free algebra. In this paper, we present a signature-based algorithm for computing Gröbner bases in precisely this setting. The algorithm is an adaptation of Buchberger's algorithm including signatures. We prove that our algorithm correctly enumerates a signature Gröbner basis as well as a Gröbner basis of the module generated by the leading terms of the generators' syzygies, and that it terminates whenever the ideal admits a finite signature Gröbner basis. Additionally, we adapt well-known signature-based criteria eliminating redundant reductions, such as the syzygy criterion, the F5 criterion and the singular criterion, to the case of noncommutative polynomials. We also generalise reconstruction methods from the commutative setting that allow to recover, from partial information about signatures, the coordinates of elements of a Gröbner basis in terms of the input polynomials, as well as a basis of the syzygy module of the generators. We have written a toy implementation of all the algorithms in the Mathematica package OperatorGB and we compare our signature-based algorithm to the classical Buchberger algorithm for noncommutative polynomials.

Abstract:Recent developments in multivariate polynomial solving algorithms have made algebraic cryptanalysis a plausible threat to many cryptosystems. However, theoretical complexity estimates have shown this kind of attack unfeasible for most realistic applications. In this paper we present a strategy for computing Gröbner basis that challenges those complexity estimates. It uses a flexible partial enlargement technique together with reduced row echelon forms to generate lower degree elements–mutants. This new strategy surpasses old boundaries and obligates us to think of new paradigms for estimating complexity of Gröbner basis computation. The new proposed algorithm computed a Gröbner basis of a degree 2 random system with 32 variables and 32 equations using 30 GB which was never done before by any known Gröbner bases solver.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with linear algebra based methods for solving exactly polynomial systems through so-called Gröbner bases, which allow one to compute modulo the polynomial ideal generated by the input equations. This is a topical issue in non-linear algebra and more broadly in computational mathematics because of its numerous applications in engineering and computing sciences. Such applications often require geometric computing features such as representing the closure of the set difference of two solution sets to given polynomial systems. Algebraically, this boils down to computing Gröbner bases of colon and/or saturation polynomial ideals. In this paper, we describe and analyze new Gröbner bases algorithms for this task and present implementations which are more efficient by several orders of magnitude than the state-of-the-art software.

Abstract:Algebraic cryptanalysis usually requires to recover the secret key by solving polynomial equations. Grobner bases algorithm is a well-known method to solve this problem. However, a serious drawback exists in the Grobner bases based algebraic attacks, namely, any information won't be got if we couldn't work out the Grobner bases of the polynomial equations system. In this paper, firstly, a generalized model of Grobner basis algorithms is presented, which provides us a platform to analyze and solve common problems of the algorithms. Secondly, we give and prove the degree bound of the polynomials appeared during the computation of Grobner basis after field polynomials is added. Finally, by detecting the temporary basis during the computation of Grobner bases and then extracting the univariate polynomials contained unique solution in the temporary basis, a heuristic strategy named Middle-Solving is presented to solve these polynomials at each iteration of the algorithm. Farther, two specific application mode of Middle-Solving strategy for the incremental and non-incremental Grobner bases algorithms are presented respectively. By using the Middle-Solving strategy, even though we couldn't work out the final Grobner bases, some information of the variables still leak during the computational process.

Abstract:We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.

Abstract:For the almost complete intersection ideals $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^k)$, we compute their reduced Gröbner basis for any term ordering, revealing a combinatorial structure linked to lattice paths, elementary symmetric polynomials, and Catalan numbers. Using this structure, we classify the weak Lefschetz property for these ideals. Additionally, we provide a new proof of the well-known result that the squarefree algebra satisfies the strong Lefschetz property. Finally, we compute the Betti numbers of the initial ideals and construct a minimal free resolution using a Mayer-Vietoris tree approach.

Abstract:Based on a theorem by Vasconcelos, we give an algorithm for equidimensional decomposition of algebraic sets using syzygy computations via Gröbner bases. This algorithm avoids the use of elimination, homological algebra and processing the input equations one-by-one present in previous algorithms. We experimentally demonstrate the practical interest of our algorithm compared to the state of the art.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new method to avoid zero reductions in Gröbner basis computation. We call this method LASyz, which stands for Lineal Algebra to compute Syzygies. LASyz uses exhaustively the information of both principal syzygies and non-trivial syzygies to avoid zero reductions. All computation is done using linear algebra techniques. LASyz is easy to understand and implement. The method does not require to compute Gröbner bases of subsequences of generators incrementally and it imposes no restrictions on the reductions allowed. We provide a complete theoretical foundation for the LASyz method and we describe an algorithm to compute Gröbner bases for zero dimensional ideals based on this foundation. A qualitative comparison with similar algorithms is provided and the performance of the algorithm is illustrated with experimental data.

Abstract:Gröbner bases are nowadays central tools for solving various problems in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. A typical use of Gröbner bases is the multivariate polynomial system solving, which enables us to construct algebraic attacks against post-quantum cryptographic protocols. Therefore, the determination of the complexity of computing Gröbner bases is very important both in theory and in practice: One of the most important cases is the case where input polynomials compose an (overdetermined) affine semi-regular sequence. The first part of this paper aims to present a survey on Gröbner basis computation and its complexity. In the second part, we shall give an explicit formula on the (truncated) Hilbert-Poincaré series associated to the homogenization of an affine semi-regular sequence. Based on the formula, we also study (reduced) Gröbner bases of the ideals generated by an affine semi-regular sequence and its homogenization. Some of our results are considered to give mathematically rigorous proofs of the correctness of methods for computing Gröbner bases of the ideal generated by an affine semi-regular sequence.

Abstract:We present a $p$-adic algorithm to recover the lexicographic Gröbner basis $\mathcal G$ of an ideal in $\mathbb Q[x,y]$ with a generating set in $\mathbb Z[x,y]$, with a complexity that is less than cubic in terms of the dimension of $\mathbb Q[x,y]/\langle \mathcal G \rangle$ and softly linear in the height of its coefficients. We observe that previous results of Lazard's that use Hermite normal forms to compute Gröbner bases for ideals with two generators can be generalized to a set of $t\in \mathbb N^+$ generators. We use this result to obtain a bound on the height of the coefficients of $\mathcal G$, and to control the probability of choosing a \textit{good} prime $p$ to build the $p$-adic expansion of $\mathcal G$.

Abstract:We investigate the application of syzygies for efficiently computing (finite) Pommaret bases. For this purpose, we first describe a non-trivial variant of Gerdt's algorithm to construct an involutive basis for the input ideal as well as an involutive basis for the syzygy module of the output basis. Then we apply this new algorithm in the context of Seiler's method to transform a given ideal into quasi stable position to ensure the existence of a finite Pommaret basis. This new approach allows us to avoid superfluous reductions in the iterative computation of Janet bases required by this method. We conclude the paper by proposing an involutive variant of the signature based algorithm of Gao et al. to compute simultaneously a Grobner basis for a given ideal and for the syzygy module of the input basis. All the presented algorithms have been implemented in Maple and their performance is evaluated via a set of benchmark ideals.

Abstract:In the field of algebraic systems biology, the number of minimal polynomial models constructed using discretized data from an underlying system is related to the number of distinct reduced Gröbner bases for the ideal of the data points. While the theory of Gröbner bases is extensive, what is missing is a closed form for their number for a given ideal. This work contributes connections between the geometry of data points and the number of Gröbner bases associated to small data sets. Furthermore we improve an existing upper bound for the number of Gröbner bases specialized for data over a finite field.

Abstract:We answer a question of Bergeron, Hohlweg, Rosas, and Zabrocki from 2006 to give a combinatorial description for the coproduct of the x-basis in the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, which arises in the theory of Grothendieck bialgebras. We achieve this using the theory of Hopf monoids and the Fock functor. We also determine combinatorial expansions of this basis in terms of the monomial and power sum symmetric functions in NCSym, and by taking the commutative image of the x-basis we discover a new multiplicative basis for the algebra of symmetric functions.

Abstract:In 2006, Arnold, Falk, and Winther developed finite element exterior calculus, using the language of differential forms to generalize the Lagrange, Raviart--Thomas, Brezzi--Douglas--Marini, and Nédélec finite element spaces for simplicial triangulations. In a recent paper, Licht asks whether, on a single simplex, one can construct bases for these spaces that are invariant with respect to permuting the vertices of the simplex. For scalar fields, standard bases all have this symmetry property, but for vector fields, this question is more complicated: such invariant bases may or may not exist, depending on the polynomial degree of the element. In dimensions two and three, Licht constructs such invariant bases for certain values of the polynomial degree $r$, and he conjectures that his list is complete, that is, that no such basis exists for other values of $r$. In this paper, we show that Licht's conjecture is true in dimension two. However, in dimension three, we show that Licht's ideas can be extended to give invariant bases for many more values of $r$; we then show that this new larger list is complete. Along the way, we develop a more general framework for the geometric decomposition ideas of Arnold, Falk, and Winther.

On the arithmetic complexity of computing Gröbner bases of comaximal determinantal ideals

Abstract:Let $M$ be an $n\times n$ matrix of homogeneous linear forms over a field $\Bbbk$. If the ideal $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$ generated by minors of size $n-1$ is Cohen-Macaulay, then the Gulliksen-Negård complex is a free resolution of $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$. It has recently been shown that by taking into account the syzygy modules for $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$ which can be obtained from this complex, one can derive a refined signature-based Gröbner basis algorithm DetGB which avoids reductions to zero when computing a grevlex Gröbner basis for $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$. In this paper, we establish sharp complexity bounds on DetGB. To accomplish this, we prove several results on the sizes of reduced grevlex Gröbner bases of reverse lexicographic ideals, thanks to which we obtain two main complexity results which rely on conjectures similar to that of Fröberg. The first one states that, in the zero-dimensional case, the size of the reduced grevlex Gröbner basis of $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$ is bounded from below by $n^{6}$ asymptotically. The second, also in the zero-dimensional case, states that the complexity of DetGB is bounded from above by $n^{2\omega+3}$ asymptotically, where $2\le\omega\le 3$ is any complexity exponent for matrix multiplication over $\Bbbk$.
