We provide an overview of prominent social media platforms, also known as applications or apps, as well as a discussion of their influence and implications for the field.Recent FindingsThe various collaborative features of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and other emerging platforms have proven appealing to organizations and users seeking dermatology-related content and medical advice. However, the potential for propagation of inaccurate or even dangerous information is high.SummaryDespite the risks associated with social media usage, dermatology can benefit from opportunities to connect and engage with audiences through these platforms. Dermatologists should be encouraged to increase their presence on multiple social media apps to dispel and counteract misleading posts with evidence-based knowledge.

Abstract:The process of learning has been confined to the realms of educational institutions. Over the last ten years, the semantics of social media networks have evolved with the use of mobile gadgets. Consequently, nephrologists have realised the potential benefits of using these platforms for their educational and career development. Social media can change the horizon of nephrology education. The concept of bedside examination, teaching and sharing experiences have changed with the advent of Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and X (former Twitter). Other networking portals, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, X (former Twitter), and Pinterest, have also amassed the attention of selected users. Despite split opinions on the utility of social media, it is undeniable that it has influenced interaction between students and mentors. Resources ranging from online networks, blogs, visual aids, podcasts, online journal clubs, videos, live conference coverages, and tutorials have made it possible for nephrologists to stay informed and educated with recent updates. In this review, we discuss how social media can enrich nephrology academia, facilitate the sharing of research and access to fellowships and mentorship programs, provide career prospects to trainees, and broadcast scientific conferences while bringing nephrology societies together. Abstract:The advent of social media has changed numerous aspects of modern life, with users developing and maintaining personal and professional relationships, following and sharing breaking news and importantly, searching for and disseminating health information and medical research. In the present paper, we reviewed available literature to outline the potential uses, pitfalls and impacts of social media for providers, scientists and institutions involved in digestive health in the domains of patient care, research and professional development. We recommend that these groups become more active participants on social media platforms to combat misinformation, advocate for patients, and curate and disseminate valuable research and educational materials. We also recommend that societies such as NASPGHAN assist its members in accessing training on effective social media use and the creation and maintenance of public‐facing profiles and that academic institutions incorporate substantive social media contributions into academic promotion processes.

Social Media and Urticaria - A Data Audit of Facebook®, LinkedIn®, and Twitter® Posts

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Urticaria is a common debilitating dermatological disorder impairing a patient’s quality of life. Such patients are increasingly using socialmedia to manage their health and interact with peers, particularly during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives: To explore and analyse the quality of urticaria related social-media information available to patients. Materials and Methods: An in-depth data audit of the three most commonly used social networks viz. Facebook®, LinkedIn®, and Twitter® were done on a single day, as posts may change or lose relevance over time. The word “urticaria” was searched on three social media, and the first 100 posts in each were further analysed. The post-creator was either categorised as “individual” or “group”, and non-English posts were excluded. All types of posts have been analysed, including text, images, video, and website links. We also collected the comments/replies, share/re-tweet, and likes on the posts. Results: Among the total 300 social-media posts, the highest number of “individual” posts was on LinkedIn® followed by Twitter® and Facebook® (χ 2 = 82.86, P < 0.0001). Regarding thematic content, most Facebook® posts discussed disease symptoms, followed by the promotion of journal or blog posts, and discussion about causative and triggering agents. LinkedIn® was primarily used for the promotion of journal articles or blog posts, followed by educational webinars and urticaria treatment stories. Twitter® users mostly interacted with peers about their urticaria symptoms and perceived etiologic and triggering factors. Regarding the type of post, images were maximally shared on Facebook®, while video/video links and web links were highest on LinkedIn® (χ 2 = 21.59, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The overall quality of urticaria related information on these 3 social media platforms is satisfactory for patients. Dermatologists may consider utilising social media to further educate such patients and improve the overall treatment outcome. The use of such networking channels will continue to grow, as communication remains crucial for urticaria management.

Social media: a review and tutorial of applications in medicine and health care

Abstract:Background: Social media are dynamic and interactive computer-mediated communication tools that have high penetration rates in the general population in high-income and middle-income countries. However, in medicine and health care, a large number of stakeholders (eg, clinicians, administrators, professional colleges, academic institutions, ministries of health, among others) are unaware of social media's relevance, potential applications in their day-to-day activities, as well as the inherent risks and how these may be attenuated and mitigated. Objective: We conducted a narrative review with the aim to present case studies that illustrate how, where, and why social media are being used in the medical and health care sectors. Methods: Using a critical-interpretivist framework, we used qualitative methods to synthesize the impact and illustrate, explain, and provide contextual knowledge of the applications and potential implementations of social media in medicine and health care. Both traditional (eg, peer-reviewed) and nontraditional (eg, policies, case studies, and social media content) sources were used, in addition to an environmental scan (using Google and Bing Web searches) of resources. Results: We reviewed, evaluated, and synthesized 76 articles, 44 websites, and 11 policies/reports. Results and case studies are presented according to 10 different categories of social media: (1) blogs (eg, WordPress), (2) microblogs (eg, Twitter), (3) social networking sites (eg, Facebook), (4) professional networking sites (eg, LinkedIn, Sermo), (5) thematic networking sites (eg, 23andMe), (6) wikis (eg, Wikipedia), (7) mashups (eg, HealthMap), (8) collaborative filtering sites (eg, Digg), (9) media sharing sites (eg, YouTube, Slideshare), and others (eg, SecondLife). Four recommendations are provided and explained for stakeholders wishing to engage with social media while attenuating risk: (1) maintain professionalism at all times, (2) be authentic, have fun, and do not be afraid, (3) ask for help, and (4) focus, grab attention, and engage. Conclusions: The role of social media in the medical and health care sectors is far reaching, and many questions in terms of governance, ethics, professionalism, privacy, confidentiality, and information quality remain unanswered. By following the guidelines presented, professionals have a starting point to engage with social media in a safe and ethical manner. Future research will be required to understand the synergies between social media and evidence-based practice, as well as develop institutional policies that benefit patients, clinicians, public health practitioners, and industry alike.
Use of Social Media for Patient Education in Dermatology: Narrative Review

Abstract:Background: Social media has rapidly become one of the main avenues for news and communication among those with access to technology. Nearly 60% or 4.7 billion people worldwide use social media. Different social media networks provide users with a barrage of posts, opinions, and transformations. With this noticeable uptick in physician and patient education usage of social media, exploration of the impacts of social media on patient education in dermatology is crucial. Objective: The goal of this narrative review was to evaluate existing peer-reviewed literature examining the use of social media for patient education in dermatology and to establish trends and implications. Additional attention was given to different social media sites, and potential differences in modalities of posts such as short-form videos on TikTok and Instagram Reels, long-form videos on YouTube, and infographics on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Methods: PubMed, Access DermatologyDxRx, and Scopus searches of peer-reviewed publications were performed to discover articles with social media and patient education keywords in combination with other health care–relevant or dermatology-relevant keywords. Subsequently, the screening of these studies was performed by the author who has experience with education and research experience in health care, dermatology, social media, and telehealth. Ultimately, the selected articles were summarized through qualitative analysis of key points and presented for further discussion. Results: Through this narrative review, the researcher was able to identify several publications focusing on dermatology and social media. Some common subject areas included the use of social media for the promotion of private dermatology practices, residency programs, and research journals. So long as providers, such as dermatologists, take ethical considerations into account, these platforms can provide patients with curated educational content. In addition, several publications emphasized the use of social media as a form of patient education on dermatologic conditions but also as a source of misinformation. Conclusions: This narrative review illuminated the use of social media as a form of patient education for dermatology, with its applications addressed across many demographics and situations. As social media platforms continue to update their algorithms, content filters, and posts, social media may become a reputable form of patient education in dermatology. Future studies and innovations should continue to explore innovations in this space, the efficacy of different modalities of posts, and longitudinal differences in patient outcomes and health literacy.

Abstract:Objective: Social media has fundamentally changed how the world shares and receives information. This review offers a perspective for the practicing clinician regarding how patients are being influenced by their online interactions and considerations for proactively discussing medical decision making with patients. Data sources: Literature search of PubMed database and online published market research data surrounding social media use. Study selections: Peer-reviewed studies, Pew research data, and editorials in the English language were selected and reviewed. Results: There has been a substantial increase in the breadth and depth of literature surrounding the use of social media by patients and medical professionals. Increased focus on how it contributes to medical decision making and patient-clinician interactions has occurred in recent years. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has highlighted the various sources of misinformation and disinformation and how they impact care on many levels. Best practices have been established to assist medical professionals in developing an online presence to combat misinformation or address individual patients. Conclusion: There is growing understanding and recognition of the myriad of ways in which social media is impacting health care. Health care professionals from all backgrounds need to increase their understanding of these complex interactions to best assist patients with their medical decision making.

Abstract:Social media is being widely used across ophthalmology. Its communication tools have been employed more often by ophthalmologists in private practice than academia, although academic institutions may be more impactful influencers. There are opportunities to promote ophthalmic services and to augment traditional clinical care. Social media provides a medium to disseminate peer‐reviewed literature in ophthalmology, and to expand conference experiences. It is used for teaching ophthalmology at medical schools and for attracting medical students into ophthalmology training, and for research in ophthalmology. Important considerations when using social media include the required time commitment and the public nature of interactions. The high level of misinformation in medical social media remains a challenge for both ophthalmologists and their patients, and the ophthalmologist can play an active role in addressing the issue. This review considers the role that social media is playing in ophthalmology today, including impact on ophthalmic practice, applications in ophthalmic education and training, and patient‐focused networking.

Abstract:The use of social media has become very instinctive to many. It has become part of a daily routine. Enhanced communication, liberated expressions of self, becoming updated with all the trends and news, and marketing promotion are only some of the reasons why most people use social media. Health care providers including physicians should take advantage of these platforms for professional purposes. Social media extends far beyond the famous platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram, used mostly for social connections. There are sites dedicated to serve professionals, for example, LinkedIn, or even physician-specific forums such as Sermo. The physical medicine and rehabilitation community has a forum (Phyzforum) created by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to share questions, comments, and ideas. Moreover, there are broadcast media (Podcast) and blogging sites (WordPress) used by many physiatrists. Surveys show that physicians actively use an average of 2-4 hours of professional-leaning networking sites per week; for example, 44% of physicians use Sermo and 42% use LinkedIn. The participation also extends to more popular sites, with 40%, 25%, and 20% physician participation in YouTube, Blogging, and Twitter, respectively. There are numerous guidelines available for medical practitioners pertaining to professional use of social media. Strategies such as timing of postings and posting content as well as methods to maintain your online reputation are discussed. Various benefits and potential pitfalls with regards to social media use are also analyzed, including how to engage followers and addressing negative comments and reviews.

Abstract:Social media has rapidly developed in the past decade to become a powerful and influential force for patients, physicians, health systems, and the academic community. While the use of social media in health care has produced many positive changes, such as rapid dissemination of information, crowd-sourced sharing of knowledge, learning, and social interaction, social media in health care has also negative effects. Recent examples of negative impacts of social media include rapid and unchecked information dissemination leading to patient misinformation and inadvertent reputational harm for health care professionals due to engaging in controversial topics on public platforms. Members of the anesthesiology community, like other medical specialties, have rapidly adopted social media at many different levels. However, most anesthesiologists, health systems, and academic communities have little education, preparation, and guidelines on optimizing the use of social media technology while minimizing the risks of social media. Anesthesiology has been and will continue to be impacted by the forces of technology and the cultural influences of social media for the foreseeable future. The purpose of this article was to examine the recent history of social media adoption in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, understand the current impact of social media across our specialty, and consider how the future development of technology and evolving social and cultural dynamic influences of social media will have on anesthesiology over the next quarter century.

A Survey of Social Media Use and Preferences in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract:Background: With the recent increase in the use of social media, patients with chronic illnesses are using the Internet as a resource for disease management. As the peak incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) occurs in patients between the ages of 15 and 30, IBD is a suitable condition to study social media use. The aim of this study was to assess social media usage and preferences in patients with IBD. Methods: We administered a survey to 118 patients with IBD at our outpatient practice at the Boston Medical Center (BMC), Center for Digestive Disorders, and the University of Southern Alabama (USA) between November 1, 2015, and March 9, 2016. Results: The most frequently used IBD-specific social media website was the CCFA (86%). High-frequency social media users were more likely to agree that "social media is useful for managing my IBD," compared with low-frequency social media users (OR 3.23, 0.3-10.1, P = 0.199). Fifty-five percent of respondents were interested in obtaining patient-with-IBD education through social media, or organizations such as the CCFA, whereas 45% did not express interest. Sixty-two percent of patients would be interested in following a social media account established by their gastroenterologist. Privacy and/or confidentiality issues were the primary barriers to social media use. Last, most patients were unsure of the quality of IBD information posted online. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that patients who frequently use social media are highly interested in using social media in the management of their IBD. Most patients with IBD in our study were interested in receiving IBD information from their gastroenterologist and other patient-related organizations through social media. Most patients are unsure of the quality of IBD information posted on social media. Gastroenterologists should be aware that their patients may use social media to obtain disease education. Future studies should assess the quality of IBD information on social media and the effectiveness of communication through social media as a means to improve patient education and outcomes.
Microtia and Social Media: How Can We Help Our Patients?

Abstract:In today's digital era, the intersection of social media and healthcare has emerged as a valuable tool for medical communication and education. However, the use of social media among microtia families has not been thoroughly explored in literature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of microtia surgeons on social media, the attitudes of microtia families towards physician social media use, and the motivations behind social media usage among microtia families. This study employed a cross-sectional survey methodology. Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess microtia families present in dedicated Instagram and Facebook groups, whereas the presence of microtia surgeons was assessed through responses from an official WhatsApp group. The findings reveal a significant disparity between the demand for microtia surgeons' social media presence and their actual engagement. Although 90.5% of microtia family respondents believed that microtia surgeons should have a presence on social media platforms, only 46.0% of microtia surgeons maintained an active presence. Of microtia families, 55% expressed that they used social media both to facilitate interactions with other families and explore treatment options. Microtia surgeons more often utilized Instagram and Twitter than microtia families. Of microtia families, 40.5% reported using a combination of social media platforms, most often Facebook. This study underscores the increasing reliance on social media for medical information. By increasing their social media presence, microtia surgeons can not only enhance patient education and satisfaction but also contribute to the broader landscape of medical communication and education in the digital age.

Abstract:Social media has become a part of everyday life. It has changed the way we obtain and distribute information, connect, and interact with others. Abstract:Despite the increasing prevalence of social media usage in health care contexts, its impact on skin cancer prevention and awareness has not been largely investigated. We conducted a review of literature on this topic with the objective of summarizing and analyzing the role of social media in skin cancer and sun damage awareness and to identify the uses, benefits, and limitations of different social media platforms on skin cancer prevention. In today's technological society, it is critical to understand and study the best form of communication. Specific platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok vary in originators of material, target demographics, messaging strategies, and reliability of information with regards to skin cancer, sun, and indoor tanning damage. Our results demonstrate that social media interventions have shown promise in skin cancer prevention and continue to escalate by the day. Dermatologists should keep pace with the latest dermatological content on social media and examine its evolution to target the right audience with the proper messages. Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness and true impact of social media on meaningful and lasting behavior change for skin cancer prevention.

Abstract:Social media refers to online social networking sites and is a broad example of Web 2.0, such as Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Instagram, WhatsApp, and blogs. It is a new and ever-changing field. Access to the internet, social media platforms and mobile communications are all tools that can be leveraged to make health information available and accessible. This research aimed to conduct an introductory study of the existing published literature on why to choose and how to use social media to obtain population health information and to gain knowledge about various health sectors like disease surveillance, health education, health research, health and behavioral modification, influence policy, enhance professional development and doctor-patient relation development. We searched for publications using databases like PubMed, NCBI, and Google Scholar, and combined 2022 social media usage statistics from PWC, Infographics Archive, and Statista online websites. The American Medical Association (AMA) policy about Professionalism in Social Media Use, American College of Physicians-Federations of State Medical Boards (ACP-FSMB) guidelines for Online Medical Professionalism, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) social media violations were also briefly reviewed. Our findings reflect the benefits and drawbacks of using web platforms and how they impact public health ethically, professionally, and socially. During our research, we discovered that social media's impact on public health concerns is both positive and negative, and we attempted to explain how social networks are assisting people in achieving health, which is still a source of much debate.

Abstract:Social media enables the public sharing of information. With the recent emphasis on transparency and the open sharing of information between doctors and patients, the intersection of social media and healthcare is of particular interest. Twitter is currently the most popular form of social media used for healthcare communication; here, we examine the use of Twitter in medicine and specifically explore in what capacity using Twitter to share information on treatments and research has the potential to improve care. The sharing of information on Twitter can create a communicative and collaborative atmosphere for patients, physicians, and researchers and even improve quality of care. However, risks involved with using Twitter for healthcare discourse include high rates of misinformation, difficulties in verifying the credibility of sources, overwhelmingly high volumes of information available on Twitter, concerns about professionalism, and the opportunity cost of using physician time. Ultimately, the use of Twitter in healthcare can allow patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers to be more informed, but specific guidelines for appropriate use are necessary.

A Social Media Blueprint – Understanding What Makes the Optimal Social Media Account for Paediatric Surgical Families

Abstract:Background Social media is one of the most common sources of information for parents seeking information on their child's health. The purpose of this study was to better understand the social media habits of parents of paediatric surgery patients through surveys and focus groups. Methods An online survey was distributed to parents visiting paediatric surgery clinics at a tertiary care hospital. Surveys were distributed via QR code and social media. Two virtual focus groups were conducted with parents of paediatric patients. Descriptive statistics were used for survey analysis and focus group transcripts were thematically analyzed. Results A total of 107 respondents completed the online survey. Median age of respondents was 36 (interquartile range: 32-41). 81.3% of the respondents were female. Facebook was the preferred social media platform (47.2%), followed by Instagram (41.5%) then other platforms (4.7%). Respondents indicated that their preferred length of video was 30 seconds (41.2%). When asked which type of video content they prefer, participants indicated animated video as most popular (66.0%) followed by a physician speaking (60.0%), and slides with voiceover (45.%). The focus groups revealed themes of: (1) functionality and content; (2) branding, aesthetic and legitimacy; (3) unmasking of physicians; (4) peer and community support. Conclusion Creating a successful social media account for parents must take into consideration their social media habits. A Facebook account that features brief videos may be most likely to engage parents. Additionally, physicians need to establish credibility and legitimacy of their content to attract their target audience. Category of Manuscript Original Research. Level of Evidence III.

Abstract:The rising use of social media in healthcare, particularly in dermatology, presents opportunities and challenges. Our letter emphasises the need for clearer regulations, credential checks for medical professionals on social platforms, and collaboration among healthcare systems, professionals, regulators, and social media companies to educate and establish guidelines for responsible use.

Abstract:Journal of Child Neurology, Ahead of Print. Background and ObjectivesMedical professionals use social media for career development, education, clinical outreach, or advocacy. Prior studies estimate that 25% to 65% of health care providers use social media professionally; however, the number of users and platforms are rapidly changing. Therefore, as part of a broader study, we set out to assess platform preferences and social media usage among neurologists.MethodsThis was a multisite cross-sectional analysis consisting of a REDCap survey of clinicians, residents, and medical students. Faculty, trainees, or clinical year medical students interested in child neurology or adult neurology residency or fellowship programs within the United States were eligible to participate. Recruitment methods were broad to encompass as diverse and extensive participation as possible. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data are presented according to the STROBE guidelines.ResultsOf the 226 neurology respondents, 55% (n = 124) were child neurology and 45% (n = 102) were adult neurology across all career stages, including students. Of the 70% who reported using social media in a professional capacity, the most commonly reported reasons were for networking and collaboration (n = 95, 60%), self-directed medical learning (n = 90, 57%), and brand building and reputation (n = 62, 39%). Twitter and Facebook were the most common and versatile platforms used by neurologists. Medical students had the highest documentation of social media scholarships on their curriculum vitae (37%, P = .016) and the most interest (33%, P = .016) in learning how to document social media scholarships if they were not already. Early faculty shared this interest more than residents, fellows, or mid–late career faculty. In all groups except for mid–late career faculty, a majority of respondents (>75%) showed interest in learning how to leverage social media for career development.DiscussionSocial media is used professionally by a majority of neurologists, most commonly for networking, self-directed learning, and building individual brands. Opportunities exist to better understand platform preferences and ways to optimize their use for various professional activities as well as to provide education on effective professional use of social media including documentation for promotion.
