Abstract:Recently Freed and Hopkins [11] proved that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory on pin(+) manifolds in the low-energy field theory approximation, and they also developed an algebraic theory of cubic forms. Earlier Witten [33] proved the anomaly cancellation for spin manifolds by introducing the E-8-bundle technique. Motivated by the cubic forms and the anomaly cancellation formulas of Witten-Freed-Hopkins, we give some new cubic forms on spin, spinc(e), spin(omega 2) and orientable 12-manifolds respectively. We relate them to eta-invariants when the manifolds are with boundary, and mod 2 indices on 10 dimensional characteristic submanifolds when the manifolds are spinc or spin(omega 2). Our method of producing these cubic forms is a combination of (generalized) Witten classes and the character of the basic representation of affine E-8. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We explore how introducing a non-trivial Mordell-Weil group changes the structure of the Coulomb phases of a five-dimensional gauge theory from an M-theory compactified on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with a I$_2$+I$_4$ collision of singularities. The resulting gauge theory has a semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus \mathfrak{sp}(4)$ or $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus \mathfrak{su}(4)$. We compute topological invariants relevant for the physics, such as the Euler characteristic, Hodge numbers, and triple intersection numbers. We determine the matter representation geometrically by computing weights via intersection of curves and fibral divisors. We fix the number of charged hypermultiplets transforming in each representations by comparing the triple intersection numbers and the one-loop prepotential. This condition is enough to fix the number of representation when the Mordell-Weil group is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ but not when it is trivial. The vanishing of the fourth power of the curvature forms in the anomaly polynomial is enough to fix the number of representations. We discuss anomaly cancellations of the six-dimensional uplifted. In particular, the gravitational anomaly is also considered as the Hodge numbers are computed explicitly without counting the degrees of freedom of the Weierstrass equation.

Abstract:We describe a systematic way of computing the 't Hooft anomalies for continuous symmetries of Quantum Field Theories in even dimensions that can be geometrically engineered from M5-branes. Our approach is based on anomaly inflow, and characterizes the anomaly polynomial of the QFT in terms of the geometric definition of the field theory. In particular, when the QFT admits a holographic dual, the topological data of the solution is sufficient to compute the anomalies of the dual field theory, including finite terms in $N$. We study several classes of examples in four and six dimensions, with or without known M5-brane probe configurations.

The M-Theory Three-Form and Singular Geometries

Abstract:While M- and F-theory compactifications describe a much larger class of vacua than perturbative string compactifications, they typically need singularities to generate non-abelian gauge fields and charged matter. The physical explanation involves M2-branes wrapped on vanishing cycles. Here we seek an alternative explanation that could address outstanding issues such as the description of nilpotent branches, stability walls, frozen singularities and so forth. To this end we use a model in which the three-form is related to the Chern-Simons form of a bundle. The model has a one-form non-abelian gauge symmetry which normally eliminates all the degrees of freedom associated to the bundle. However by restricting the transformations to preserve the bundle along the vanishing cycles, we may get new degrees of freedom associated to singularities, without appealing to wrapped M2-branes. The analysis can be simplified by gauge-fixing the one-form symmetry using higher-dimensional instanton equations. We explain how this mechanism leads to the natural emergence of phenomena such as enhanced ADE gauge symmetries, nilpotent branches, charged matter fields and their holomorphic couplings.

Abstract:We study gravitational anomalies for fivebranes in M theory. We show that an apparent anomaly in diffeomorphisms acting on the normal bundle is cancelled by a careful treatment of the M theory Chern-Simons coupling in the presence of fivebranes. One interesting aspect of our treatment is the way in which a magnetic object (the fivebrane) is smoothed out through coupling to gravity and the resulting relation between antisymmetric tensor gauge transformations and diffeomorphisms in the presence of a fivebrane.

Abstract:Anomalies are a very powerful tool in constraining theories beyond the standard model. We give a pedagogical overview of some topics illustrating the important role played by spacetime anomalies in string theory. After discussing the general problem of anomaly cancellation in quantum field theory, the focus is set on the cancellation of anomalies in type-I string theory through the Green-Schwarz mechanism. The notion of anomaly inflow is also reviewed, as well as its application to the evaluation of D-brane anomalous couplings. Finally, we briefly comment on recent developments concerning the reformulation of anomalies in the language of category theory.

Semiclassical quantization of M5 brane probes wrapped on $\textrm{AdS}_3\times S^3$ and defect anomalies

Abstract:We consider two supersymmetric M5 brane probe solutions in $\textrm{AdS}_7 \times S^4$ and one in $\textrm{AdS}_4 \times S^7$ that all have the $\textrm{AdS}_3 \times S^3$ world-volume geometry. The values of the classical action of the first two M5 probes (with $S^3$ in $\textrm{AdS}_7$ or in $S^4$) are related to the leading $N^2$ parts in the anomaly b-coefficient in the (2,0) theory corresponding to a spherical surface defect in symmetric or antisymmetric $SU(N)$ representations. We present a detailed computation of the corresponding one-loop M5 brane partition functions finding that they vanish (in a particular regularization). This implies the vanishing of the order $N^0$ part in the b-anomaly coefficients, in agreement with earlier predictions for their exact values. It remains, however, a puzzle of how to reproduce the non-vanishing order $N$ terms in these coefficients within the semiclassical M5-brane probe setup.

Weyl Anomaly and Vacuum Magnetization Current of M5-brane in Background Flux

Abstract:It was recently discovered that for a boundary system in the presence of a background magnetic field, the quantum fluctuation of the vacuum would create a non-uniform magnetization density for the vacuum and a magnetization current is induced in the vacuum. It was also shown that this magnetic Casimir effect of the vacuum is closely related to another quantum effect of the vacuum, the Weyl anomaly. Furthermore, the phenomena can be understood in terms of the holography of the boundary system. In this article, we review the derivation of this phenomena from QFT as well as the derivation of it using AdS/BCFT. We then generalize this four dimensional effect to six-dimensions. We use the AdS/BCFT holography to show that in the presence of a 3-form magnetic field strength $H$, a string current is induced in a six-dimensional boundary conformal field theory. This allows us to determine the gauge field contribution to the Weyl anomaly in six-dimensional conformal field theory in a $H$-flux background. For the (2,0) superconformal field theory of $N$ M5-branes, the current has a magnitude proportional to $N^3$ for large $N$. This suggests that the degree of freedoms scales as $N^3$ in the (2,0) superconformal theory of $N$ multiple M5-branes. Our result for the Weyl anomaly is a new prediction for the (2,0) theory.

Something Anomalies can tell about SM and Gravity

Abstract:This ia a review of anomalies applied to a bottom-up approach to standard model and gravity. It is divided in two parts. The first consists in a review proper of anomalies in quantum field theories. Anomalies are analyzed according to three different methods: a perturbative one based on Feynman diagram, a non-perturbative one relying on the Schwinger-DeWitt approach and, third, the one hinging on the Atiyah-Singer family's index theorem. The three methods are applied both to chiral gauge anomalies and trace anomalies. The fundamental distinction that our presentation leads to is between obstructive (O) and non-obstructive (NO) anomalies. The former are tied to the non-existence of fermion propagators, which fatally maim the corresponding theory. In the second part we apply this analysis to the SM and various of its extensions immersed in a gravitational background, and find that they all are plagued by a residual chiral trace anomaly. To completely eliminate all kind of dangerous anomalies in SM-like theories we propose a somewhat unconventional scheme, and exemplify it by means of an explicit model. The latter is a left-right symmetric model. We embed it in a Weyl geometry to render it conformal invariant. We then deal with some of its quantum aspects, in particular its even (NO) trace anomalies and the means to preserve its confomal invariance at the quantum level. We briefly review renormalization and unitarity in the framework of similar models discussed in the existing literature. Finally we present a possible (conjectural) application of the model to describe the junction between cosmology and quantum field theory.

Boundaries and Defects of N=4 SYM with 4 Supercharges, Part II: Brane Constructions and 3d N=2 Field Theories

Abstract:We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1404.5527" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.5527">arXiv:1404.5527</a>. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Holomorphic Anomaly in Gauge Theories and Matrix Models

Abstract:We use the holomorphic anomaly equation to solve the gravitational corrections to Seiberg-Witten theory and a two-cut matrix model, which is related by the Dijkgraaf-Vafa conjecture to the topological B-model on a local Calabi-Yau manifold. In both cases we construct propagators that give a recursive solution in the genus modulo a holomorphic ambiguity. In the case of Seiberg-Witten theory the gravitational corrections can be calculated to all genus as quasimodular functions of Γ(2). In the matrix model we fix the holomorphic ambiguity up to genus two. The latter result establishes the Dijkgraaf-Vafa conjecture at that genus and yields a new method for solving the matrix model at fixed genus in closed form in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:We study theories with 16 supercharges and a discrete energy spectrum. One class of theories has symmetry group $SU(2|4)$. They arise as truncations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. They include the plane-wave matrix model, $2+1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{2}$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{3}/{Z}_{k}$. We explain how to obtain their gravity duals in a unified way. We explore the regions of the geometry that are relevant for the study of some $1/2$ BPS and near BPS states. This leads to a class of two dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric sigma models with nonzero $H$ flux, including a massive deformed WZW model. We show how to match some features of the string spectrum with the Yang-Mills theory. The other class of theories are also connected to $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and arise by making some of the transverse scalars compact. Their vacua are characterized by a 2D Yang-Mills theory or 3D Chern-Simons theory. These theories realize peculiar super-Poincar\'e symmetry algebras in $2+1$ or $1+1$ dimensions with ``noncentral'' charges. We finally discuss gravity duals of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{1}$.
B-brane transport in anomalous (2,2) models and localization

Abstract:We study how B-branes in two-dimensional N=(2,2) anomalous models behave as we vary the energy scale and bulk parameters in the quantum Kähler moduli space. We focus on (2,2) theories defined by abelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSM). Guided by the hemisphere partition function we find how B-branes split in arbitrary phases into components on the Higgs branch and other branches: this generalizes the band restriction rules of Herbst-Hori-Page to (abelian) anomalous models. Secondly, we address divergences in non-compact models, through the central example of GLSMs for Hirzebruch-Jung resolutions of cyclic surface singularities. For a brane with compact support we explain how to regularize and compute the hemisphere partition function and extract its Higgs branch component, which we match in the zero-instanton sector to the geometric central charge of the brane. To this aim, we clarify the definition of zero-instanton geometric central charge for objects in the derived category of a non-compact toric orbifold.

Abstract:We use techniques from functorial quantum field theory to provide a geometric description of the parity anomaly in fermionic systems coupled to background gauge and gravitational fields on odd-dimensional spacetimes. We give an explicit construction of a geometric cobordism bicategory which incorporates general background fields in a stack, and together with the theory of symmetric monoidal bicategories we use it to provide the concrete forms of invertible extended quantum field theories which capture anomalies in both the path integral and Hamiltonian frameworks. Specialising this situation by using the extension of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to manifolds with corners due to Loya and Melrose, we obtain a new Hamiltonian perspective on the parity anomaly. We compute explicitly the 2-cocycle of the projective representation of the gauge symmetry on the quantum state space, which is defined in a parity-symmetric way by suitably augmenting the standard chiral fermionic Fock spaces with Lagrangian subspaces of zero modes of the Dirac Hamiltonian that naturally appear in the index theorem. We describe the significance of our constructions for the bulk-boundary correspondence in a large class of time-reversal invariant gauge-gravity symmetry-protected topological phases of quantum matter with gapless charged boundary fermions, including the standard topological insulator in 3+1 dimensions.

Abstract:The structure of the moduli space of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories is analyzed from an algebraic geometric viewpoint. The connection between the fundamental fields of the ultraviolet theory, and the gauge invariant composite fields of the infrared theory is explained in detail. The results are then used to prove an anomaly matching theorem. The theorem is used to study anomaly matching for supersymmetric QCD, and can explain all the known anomaly matching results for this case.

Anomalies of Generalized Symmetries from Solitonic Defects

Abstract:We propose the general idea that 't Hooft anomalies of generalized global symmetries can be understood in terms of the properties of solitonic defects, which generically are non-topological defects. The defining property of such defects is that they act as sources for background fields of generalized symmetries. 't Hooft anomalies arise when solitonic defects are charged under these generalized symmetries. We illustrate this idea for several kinds of anomalies in various spacetime dimensions. A systematic exploration is performed in 3d for 0-form, 1-form, and 2-group symmetries, whose 't Hooft anomalies are related to two special types of solitonic defects, namely vortex line defects and monopole operators. This analysis is supplemented with detailed computations of such anomalies in a large class of 3d gauge theories. Central to this computation is the determination of the gauge and 0-form charges of a variety of monopole operators: these involve standard gauge monopole operators, but also fractional gauge monopole operators, as well as monopole operators for 0-form symmetries. The charges of these monopole operators mainly receive contributions from Chern-Simons terms and fermions in the matter content. Along the way, we interpret the vanishing of the global gauge and ABJ anomalies, which are anomalies not captured by local anomaly polynomials, as the requirement that gauge monopole operators and mixed monopole operators for 0-form and gauge symmetries have non-fractional integer charges.

Abstract:Due to the complexity of the required numerical codes, many of the new formulations for the evolution of the gravitational fields in numerical relativity are not tested on binary evolutions. We introduce in this paper a new testing ground for numerical methods based on the simulation of binary neutron stars. This numerical setup is used to develop a new technique, the Hamiltonian relaxation (HR), that is benchmarked against the currently most stable simulations based on the BSSN method. We show that, while the length of the HR run is somewhat shorter than the equivalent BSSN simulation, the HR technique improves the overall quality of the simulation, not only regarding the satisfaction of the Hamiltonian constraint, but also the behavior of the total angular momentum of the binary. The latest quantity agrees well with post-Newtonian estimations for point-mass binaries in circular orbits.

Monopoles, Dirac Strings and Generalised Symmetries

Abstract:Dirac's formulation of magnetic monopoles is shown to be equivalent to Maxwell theory coupled to 2-form gauge fields so that it has a local 1-form symmetry, with the 2-form gauge fields given in terms of the 2-form current densities associated with the Dirac strings. The field equations of Dirac's theory do not depend on the positions of the Dirac strings provided that they do not intersect the worldlines of any electrically charged particles; this constraint is called the Dirac veto. It is shown that Dirac's action is independent of the positions of the Dirac strings and that this corresponds a local 1-form symmetry. The electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries have a mixed anomaly, and the Dirac veto is shown to correspond to a restriction to gauge transformations for which the anomaly vanishes. The extension to $p$-form gauge fields in d-dimensions coupled to charged branes is discussed, together with the possibility of cancelling the anomaly by embedding in a higher-dimensional theory and so avoiding the veto.
