Abstract:Maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases are useful throughout quantum physics, both in a foundational context and for applications. To date, it remains unknown if complete sets of mutually unbiased bases exist in Hilbert spaces of dimensions different from a prime power, i.e. in composite dimensions such as six or ten. Fourteen mathematically equivalent formulations of the existence problem are presented. We comprehensively summarise analytic, computer-aided and numerical results relevant to the case of composite dimensions. Known modifications of the existence problem are reviewed and potential solution strategies are outlined.

Abstract:In a quantum system having a finite number N of orthogonal states, two orthonormal bases {ai} and {bj} are called mutually unbiased if all inner products ⟨ai∣bj⟩ have the same modulus 1∕N. This concept appears in several quantum information problems. The number of pairwise mutually unbiased bases is at most N+1 and various constructions of such N+1 bases have been found when N is a power of a prime number. We study families of formulas that generalize these constructions to arbitrary dimensions using finite rings. We then prove that there exists a set of N+1 mutually unbiased bases described by such formulas, if and only if N is a power of a prime number.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the concept of Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs) in discrete quantum systems. It is known that for dimensions $d$ that are powers of prime numbers, there exists a set of up to $d+1$ bases that form an MUB set. However, the maximum number of MUBs in dimensions that are not powers of prime numbers is not known. To address this issue, we introduce three algorithms based on First-Order Logic that can determine the maximum number of bases in an MUB set without numerical approximation. Our algorithms can prove this result in finite time, although the required time is impractical. Additionally, we present a heuristic approach to solve the semi-decision problem of determining if there are $k$ MUBs in a given dimension $d$. As a byproduct of our research, we demonstrate that the maximum number of MUBs in any dimension can be achieved with definable complex parameters, computable complex parameters, and other similar fields.

Abstract:We consider sparse representations of signals from redundant dictionaries which are unions of several orthonormal bases. The spark introduced by Donoho and Elad plays an important role in sparse representations. However, numerical computations of sparks are generally combinatorial. For unions of several orthonormal bases, two lower bounds on the spark via the mutual coherence were established in previous work. We constructively prove that both of them are tight. Our main results give positive answers to Gribonval and Nielsen's open problem on sparse representations in unions of orthonormal bases. Constructive proofs rely on a family of mutually unbiased bases which first appears in quantum information theory.

Abstract:Mutually unbiased bases (MUB) are useful in a number of research areas. The symmetry of MUB is an elusive and interesting subject. A (complete set of) MUB in dimension d is sharply covariant if it can be generated by a group of order d(d + 1) from a basis state. Such MUB, if they exist, would be most appealing to theoretical studies and practical applications. Unfortunately, they seem to be quite rare. Here we prove that no MUB in odd prime dimensions is sharply covariant, by virtue of clever applications of Mersenne primes, Galois fields, and Frobenius groups. This conclusion provides valuable insight about the symmetry of MUB and the geometry of quantum state space. It complements and strengthens the earlier result of the author that only two stabilizer MUB are sharply covariant. Our study leads to the conjecture that no MUB other than those in dimensions 2 and 4 is sharply covariant.
Mutually unbiased bases as a commuting polynomial optimisation problem

Abstract:We consider the problem of mutually unbiased bases as a polynomial optimization problem over the reals. We heavily reduce it using known symmetries before exploring it using two methods, combining a number of optimization techniques. The first of these is a search for bases using Lagrange-multipliers that converges rapidly in case of MUB existence, whilst the second combines a hierarchy of semidefinite programs with branch-and-bound techniques to perform a global search. We demonstrate that such an algorithm would eventually solve the open question regarding dimension 6 with finite memory, although it still remains intractable. We explore the idea that to show the inexistence of bases, it suffices to search for orthonormal vector sets of certain smaller sizes, rather than full bases. We use our two methods to conjecture the minimum set sizes required to show infeasibility, proving it for dimensions 3. The fact that such sub-problems seem to also be infeasible heavily reduces the number of variables, by 66\% in the case of the open problem, potentially providing an large speedup for other algorithms and bringing them into the realm of tractability.

Abstract:A set of $k$ orthonormal bases of $\mathbb C^d$ is called mutually unbiased if $|\langle e,f\rangle |^2 = 1/d$ whenever $e$ and $f$ are basis vectors in distinct bases. A natural question is for which pairs $(d,k)$ there exist~$k$ mutually unbiased bases in dimension $d$. The (well-known) upper bound $k \leq d+1$ is attained when~$d$ is a power of a prime. For all other dimensions it is an open problem whether the bound can be attained. Navascués, Pironio, and Acín showed how to reformulate the existence question in terms of the existence of a certain $C^*$-algebra. This naturally leads to a noncommutative polynomial optimization problem and an associated hierarchy of semidefinite programs. The problem has a symmetry coming from the wreath product of $S_d$ and $S_k$. We exploit this symmetry (analytically) to reduce the size of the semidefinite programs making them (numerically) tractable. A key step is a novel explicit decomposition of the $S_d \wr S_k$-module $\mathbb C^{([d]\times [k])^t}$ into irreducible modules. We present numerical results for small $d,k$ and low levels of the hierarchy. In particular, we obtain sum-of-squares proofs for the (well-known) fact that there do not exist $d+2$ mutually unbiased bases in dimensions~$d=2,3,4,5,6,7,8$. Moreover, our numerical results indicate that a sum-of-squares refutation, in the above-mentioned framework, of the existence of more than $3$ MUBs in dimension $6$ requires polynomials of total degree at least~$12$.

Abstract:We consider questions posed in a recent paper of Mandayam et al. (2014) on the nature of “unextendible mutually unbiased bases.” We describe a conceptual framework to study these questions, using a connection proved by the author in Thas (2009) between the set of nonidentity generalized Pauli operators on the Hilbert space of N d-level quantum systems, d a prime, and the geometry of non-degenerate alternating bilinear forms of rank N over finite fields F d . We then supply alternative and short proofs of results obtained in Mandayam et al. (2014), as well as new general bounds for the problems considered in loc. cit. In this setting, we also solve Conjecture 1 of Mandayam et al. (2014) and speculate on variations of this conjecture.

Abstract:In order to describe a setting to handle Zauner’s conjecture on mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) (stating that in Cd$$\mathbb {C}^d$$, a set of MUBs of the theoretical maximal size d+1$$d + 1$$ exists only if d is a prime power), we pose some fundamental questions which naturally arise. Some of these questions have important consequences for the construction theory of (new) sets of maximal MUBs. Partial answers will be provided in particular cases; more specifically, we will analyze MUBs with associated operator groups that have nilpotence class 2, and consider MUBs of height 1. We will also confirm Zauner’s conjecture for MUBs with associated finite nilpotent operator groups.

Abstract:Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) are widely used in quantum information processing and play an important role in quantum cryptography, quantum state tomography and communications. It's difficult to construct MUBs and remains unknown whether complete MUBs exist for any non prime power. Therefore, researchers have proposed the solution to construct approximately mutually unbiased bases (AMUBs) by weakening the inner product conditions. This paper constructs q AMUBs of ℂq, (q + 1) AMUBs of ℂq-1 and q AMUBs of ℂq-1 by using character sums over Galois rings and finite fields, where q is a power of a prime. The first construction of q AMUBs of ℂq is new which illustrates K AMUBs of ℂK can be achieved. The second and third constructions in this paper include the partial results about AMUBs constructed by W. Wang et al. in [9].

Abstract:Mutually unbiased bases (MUB) and symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) are both important objects in quantum information theory. While people do not know if there exists a complete MUB for non-prime-power dimension, several versions of approximately MUB have been considered by relaxed the inner product condition. So far there are only finite number of K such that SIC- POVMs in Ck have been found. As in the MUB case, several versions of approximately SIC-POVM have been considered by relaxed the inner product condition. In this paper, we use the definitions of approximate MUB and SIC-POVM given by Klappenecker et al. For prime power q, we present simple constructions of q approximately MUB (AMUB) for dimension q-1, q+1 AMUB for dimension q-1, which shows the number of orthonormal bases of an AMUB in Ck can be more than K+1, and q AMUB for dimension q+1 by Gauss and Jacobi sums. We also present a construction of approximately SIC-POVM (ASIC-POVM) in dimension q-1 by Gauss sum.

Abstract:Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) are interesting for various reasons. The most attractive example of (a complete set of) MUBs is the one constructed by Ivanovic as well as Wootters and Fields, which is referred to as the canonical MUB. Nevertheless, little is known about anything that is unique to this MUB. We show that the canonical MUB in any prime power dimension is uniquely determined by an extremal orbit of the (restricted) Clifford group except in dimension 3, in which case the orbit defines a special symmetric informationally complete measurement (SIC), known as the Hesse SIC. Here the extremal orbit is the orbit with the smallest number of pure states. Quite surprisingly, this characterization does not rely on any concept that is related to bases or unbiasedness. As a corollary, the canonical MUB is the unique minimal 2-design covariant with respect to the Clifford group except in dimension 3. In addition, these MUBs provide an infinite family of highly symmetric frames and positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs), which are of independent interest.

Abstract: Mutually unbiased bases (MUB) have many applications in quantum information processing and quantum cryptography. Several complex MUB's in $\mathbb{C}^d$ for some dimension $d$ and with larger size have been constructed. On the other hand, real MUB's with larger size are rare which lead to consider constructing approximate MUB (AMUB). In this paper we present a general and useful way to get real AMUB in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ from any complex AMUB in $\mathbb{C}^d$. From this method we present many new series of real AMUB's with parameters better than previous results.
Experimental Demonstration of Inequivalent Mutually Unbiased Bases

Abstract:Quantum measurements based on mutually unbiased bases (MUB) play crucial roles in foundational studies and quantum information processing. It is known that there exist inequivalent MUB, but little is known about their operational distinctions, not to say experimental demonstration. In this work, by virtue of a simple estimation problem we experimentally demonstrate the operational distinctions between inequivalent triples of MUB in dimension 4 based on high-precision photonic systems. The experimental estimation fidelities coincide well with the theoretical predictions with only 0.16$\%$ average deviation, which is 25 times less than the difference (4.1$\%$) between the maximum estimation fidelity and the minimum estimation fidelity. Our experiments clearly demonstrate that inequivalent MUB have different information extraction capabilities and different merits for quantum information processing.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of mutually unbiased bases (MUB) to measurements which are not necessarily described by rank one projectors. As such, these measurements can be a useful tool to study the long standing problem of the existence of MUB. We derive their general form, and show that in a finite, $d$-dimensional Hilbert space, one can construct a complete set of $d+1$ mutually unbiased measurements. Beside of their intrinsic link to MUB, we show, that these measurements' statistics provide complete information about the state of the system. Moreover, they capture the physical essence of unbiasedness, and in particular, they satisfy non-trivial entropic uncertainty relation similar to $d+1$ MUB.

Abstract:Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) are highly symmetric bases on complex Hilbert spaces, and the corresponding rank-1 projective measurements are ubiquitous in quantum information theory. In this work, we study a recently introduced generalization of MUBs called mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs). These measurements inherit the essential property of complementarity from MUBs, but the Hilbert space dimension is no longer required to match the number of outcomes. This operational complementarity property renders MUMs highly useful for device-independent quantum information processing. It has been shown that MUMs are strictly more general than MUBs. In this work we provide a complete proof of the characterization of MUMs that are direct sums of MUBs. We then proceed to construct new examples of MUMs that are not direct sums of MUBs. A crucial technical tool for these construction is a correspondence with quaternionic Hadamard matrices, which allows us to map known examples of such matrices to MUMs that are not direct sums of MUBs. Furthermore, we show that -- in stark contrast with MUBs -- the number of MUMs for a fixed outcome number is unbounded. Next, we focus on the use of MUMs in quantum communication. We demonstrate how any pair of MUMs with d outcomes defines a d-dimensional superdense coding protocol. Using MUMs that are not direct sums of MUBs, we disprove a recent conjecture due to Nayak and Yuen on the rigidity of superdense coding for infinitely many dimensions. The superdense coding protocols arising in the refutation reveal how shared entanglement may be used in a manner heretofore unknown.

An Efficient Quantum Circuit Construction Method for Mutually Unbiased Bases in $n$-Qubit Systems

Abstract:Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) play a crucial role in numerous applications within quantum information science, such as quantum state tomography, error correction, entanglement detection, and quantum cryptography. Utilizing $2^n + 1$ MUB circuits provides a minimal and optimal measurement strategy for reconstructing all $n$-qubit unknown states. It significantly reduces the number of measurements compared to the traditional $4^n$ Pauli observables, also enhancing the robustness of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Previous circuit designs that rely on a single generator can result in exponential gate costs for some MUB circuits. In this work, we present an efficient algorithm to generate each of the $2^n + 1$ quantum MUB circuits on $n$-qubit systems within $O(n^3)$ time. The algorithm features a three-stage structure, and we have calculated the average number of different gates for random sampling. Additionally, we have identified two linear properties: the entanglement part can be directly defined into $2n - 3$ fixed sub-parts, and the knowledge of $n$ special MUB circuits is sufficient to construct all $2^n + 1$ MUB circuits. This new efficient and simple circuit construction paves the way for the implementation of a complete set of MUBs in diverse quantum information processing tasks on high-dimensional quantum systems.

Almost Perfect Mutually Unbiased Bases that are Sparse

Abstract:In dimension $d$, Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs) are a collection of orthonormal bases over $\mathbb{C}^d$ such that for any two vectors $v_1, v_2$ belonging to different bases, the scalar product $|\braket{v_1|v_2}| = \frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}$. The upper bound on the number of such bases is $d+1$. Constructions to achieve this bound are known when $d$ is some power of prime. The situation is more restrictive in other cases and also when we consider the results over real rather than complex. Thus, certain relaxations of this model are considered in literature and consequently Approximate MUBs (AMUB) are studied. This enables one to construct potentially large number of such objects for $\mathbb{C}^d$ as well as in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this regard, we propose the concept of Almost Perfect MUBs (APMUB), where we restrict the absolute value of inner product $|\braket{v_1|v_2}|$ to be two-valued, one being 0 and the other $ \leq \frac{1+\mathcal{O}(d^{-\lambda})}{\sqrt{d}}$, such that $\lambda > 0$ and the numerator $1 + \mathcal{O}(d^{-\lambda}) \leq 2$. Each such vector constructed, has an important feature that large number of its components are zero and the non-zero components are of equal magnitude. Our techniques are based on combinatorial structures related to RBDs. We show that for several composite dimensions $d$, one can construct $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{d})$ many APMUBs, in which cases the number of MUBs are significantly small. To be specific, this result works for $d$ of the form $(q-e)(q+f), \ q, e, f \in \mathbb{N}$, with the conditions $0 \leq f \leq e$ for constant $e, f$ and $q$ some power of prime. We also show that such APMUBs provide sets of Bi-angular vectors which are $\mathcal{O}(d^{\frac{3}{2}})$ in numbers, having high angular distances among them. Finally, as the MUBs are equivalent to a set of Hadamard matrices, we show that the APMUBs are so with the set of Weighing matrices.

Topological and dimensional properties of univoque bases in double-base expansions

Abstract:Given two real numbers $q_0,q_1$ with $q_0, q_1 > 1$ satisfying $q_0+q_1 \ge q_0q_1$, we call a sequence $(d_i)$ with $d_i\in \{0,1\}$ a $(q_0,q_1)$-expansion or a double-base expansion of a real number $x$ if \[ x=\mathop{\sum}\limits_{i=1}^{\infty} \frac{d_{i}}{q_{d_1}q_{d_2}\cdots q_{d_i}}. \] When $q_0=q_1=q$, the set of univoque bases is given by the set of $q$'s such that $x = 1$ has exactly one $(q, q)$-expansion. The topological, dimensional and symbolic properties of such sets and their corresponding sequences have been intensively investigated. In our research, we study the topological and dimensional properties of the set of univoque bases for double-base expansions. This problem is more complicated, requiring new research strategies. Several new properties are uncovered. In particular, we show that the set of univoque bases in the double base setting is a meagre set with full Hausdorff dimension.
