Abstract:The temperature distribution of an ideal gas in gravitational fields has been identified as a longstanding problem in thermodynamics and statistical physics. According to the principle of entropy increase (i.e., the principle of maximum entropy), we apply a variational principle to the thermodynamical entropy functional of an ideal gas and establish a relationship between temperature gradient and gravitational field strength. As an illustrative example, the temperature and density distributions of an ideal gas in two simple but typical gravitational fields (i.e., a uniform gravitational field and an inverse-square gravitational field) are considered on the basis of entropic and hydrostatic equilibrium conditions. The effect of temperature inhomogeneity in gravitational fields is also addressed for a weakly degenerate quantum gas (e.g., Fermi and Bose gas). The present gravitational thermodynamics of a gas would have potential applications in quantum fluids, e.g., Bose-Einstein condensates in Earth's gravitational field and the temperature fluctuation spectrum in cosmic microwave background radiation.

Abstract:In this work the curvature of Weinhold (thermodynamical) metric is studied in the case of systems with two thermodynamical degrees of freedom. Conditions for the Gauss curvature $R$ to be zero, positive or negative are worked out. Signature change of the Weinhold metric and the corresponding singular behavior of the curvature at the phase boundaries are studied. Cases of systems with the constant $C_{v}$, including Ideal and Van der Waals gases, and that of Berthelot gas are discussed in detail.

Abstract:A viable approach towards Quantum Gravity is the Doubly Special Relativity (DSR) framework in which an observer-independent finite energy upper bound (or a finite smallest length scale) appears quite naturally. In this work, we have studied the thermodynamic properties of an ideal gas in a specific DSR framework, known as the Magueijo-Smolin (MS) Model. We use the fact that DSR can be considered as nonlinear representation of Lorentz Group. Subsequently, various thermodynamic parameters of ideal gas have been derived in this modified framework to compare the corresponding deviations from the usual scenario due to the presence of the invariant energy (length) scale.

Abstract:Thermodynamic length is a metric distance between equilibrium thermodynamic states. Among other interesting properties, this metric asymptotically bounds the dissipation induced by a finite time transformation of a thermodynamic system. It is also connected to the Jensen-Shannon divergence, Fisher information and Rao's entropy differential metric. Therefore, thermodynamic length is of central interest in understanding matter out-of-equilibrium. In this paper, we will consider how to define thermodynamic length for a small system described by equilibrium statistical mechanics and how to measure thermodynamic length within a computer simulation. Surprisingly, Bennett's classic acceptance ratio method for measuring free energy differences also measures thermodynamic length.

Abstract:Based on the generalized uncertainty principle, the thermodynamics of Fermi gas in high density, high pressure and high temperature are calculated. As the temperature and density increases, the energy and entropy becomes saturated and the pressure blows up without any bound. Using the conservation equation of the Robertson Walker cosmology, we find that, when the energy exceeds the E-H = beta(-1/2)(0) c(2) M-p, the expansion cannot be driven by the photon gas and the fermion gas. This requires some new physical mechanism related to quantum gravity, such as tachyons and dilatons.

Abstract:Low-frequency quadrupole vibrations in deformed ${}^{36,38,40}$Mg are studied by means of the deformed Quasiparticle-RPA based on the coordinate-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism. Strongly collective $K^{\pi}=0^{+}$ and $2^{+}$ excitation modes (carrying 10-20 W.u.) are obtained at about 3 MeV. It is found that dynamical pairing effects play an essential role in generating these modes. It implies that the lowest $K^{\pi}=0^{+}$ excitation modes are particularly sensitive indicators of dynamical pairing correlations in deformed nuclei near the neutron drip line.

Abstract:We analyze the equilibrium space of an ideal gas using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics. We introduce the concept of thermodynamic geodesics to show that the equilibrium space around a particular initial state can be divided into two regions, one that can be reached using thermodynamic geodesics and the second one forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, we show that, along thermodynamic geodesics, entropy is a linear function of the affine parameter, indicating that it can be used as a time parameter with a particular arrow of time determined by the direction in which entropy increases. We argue that entropy can also be interpreted locally as time in the case of any thermodynamic system in equilibrium and systems described within the scope of linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:We study the nonequilibrium work in a pedagogical model of relativistic ideal gas. We obtain the exact work distribution and verify Jarzynski's equality. In the nonrelativistic limit, our results recover the nonrelativistic results of Lua and Grosberg [ J. Phys. Chem. B 109 , 6805 (2005)]. We also find that, unlike the nonrelativistic case, the work distribution no longer has zeros and the number of collisions in this relativistic gas model is finite. In addition, based on an analysis of the experimental parameters, we conclude that it is difficult to detect the relativistic effects of the work distribution of the ideal gas in a piston system with the current experimental techniques. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.110.024128 ©2024 American Physical Society

Study of ideal gases in curved spacetimes

Abstract:The influence of a curved spacetime $M$ on the physical behavior of an ideal gas of $N$ particles is analyzed by considering the phase space of the system as a region of the cotangent bundle $T^{*}M^{N}$ and using Souriau's Lie group {thermodynamics} to define the corresponding probability distribution function. While the construction of the phase space respects the separability of the system, by forcing each particle to satisfy the so-called mass-shell constraint, the probability distribution is constructed by mixing the natural symplectic structure of the cotangent bundle with a Hamiltonian description of the system. In this way, the spacetime is introduced into the statistics and its isometries turn out to be of special interest because the distributions are parameterized by the elements of the Lie algebra of the isometry group, through the momentum map of the action of the isometries in $T^{*}M^{N}$. We find the Gibbs distribution that, in the simplest case of a flat spacetime, reduces to the so-called modified Jüttner distribution, used to describe ideal gases in the regime of special relativity. We also define a temperature-like function using the norm of a Killing vector, which allows us to recover the so-called Tolman-Ehrenfest effect. As a particular example, we study the outer region of a Schwarzschild black hole, for which a power series expansion of the Schwarzschild radius allows us to represent the partition function and the Gibbs distribution in terms of the corresponding quantities of the Minkowski spacetime.

Abstract:We consider the fermionic entanglement entropy for the free Dirac field in a bounded spatial region of Minkowski spacetime. In order to make the system ultraviolet finite, a regularization is introduced. An area law is proven in the limiting cases where the volume tends to infinity and/or the regularization length tends to zero. The technical core of the paper is to generalize a theorem of Harold Widom to pseudo-differential operators whose principal symbols develop a specific discontinuity at a single point.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 1, Page 1300-1320, February 2024. We are concerned with the isothermal limit of entropy solutions in [math], containing the vacuum states, of the Euler equations for isentropic gas dynamics. We prove that the entropy solutions in [math] of the isentropic Euler equations converge strongly to the corresponding entropy solutions of the isothermal Euler equations, when the adiabatic exponent [math]. This is achieved by combining careful entropy analysis and refined kinetic formulation with a compensated compactness argument to obtain the required uniform estimates for the limit. The entropy analysis involves careful estimates for the relation between the corresponding entropy pairs for the isentropic and isothermal Euler equations when the adiabatic exponent [math]. The kinetic formulation for the entropy solutions of the isentropic Euler equations with the uniformly bounded initial data is refined, so that the total variation of the dissipation measures in the formulation is locally uniformly bounded with respect to [math]. The explicit asymptotic analysis of the Riemann solutions containing the vacuum states is also presented.

Gravity from thermodynamics: optimal transport and negative effective dimensions

Abstract:We prove an equivalence between the classical equations of motion governing vacuum gravity compactifications (and more general warped-product spacetimes) and a concavity property of entropy under time evolution. This is obtained by linking the theory of optimal transport to the Raychaudhuri equation in the internal space, where the warp factor introduces effective notions of curvature and (negative) internal dimension. When the Reduced Energy Condition is satisfied, concavity can be characterized in terms of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$; as a consequence, the masses of the spin-two Kaluza-Klein fields obey bounds in terms of $\Lambda$ alone. We show that some Cheeger bounds on the KK spectrum hold even without assuming synthetic Ricci lower bounds, in the large class of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces, which includes D-brane and O-plane singularities. As an application, we show how some approximate string theory solutions in the literature achieve scale separation, and we construct a new explicit parametrically scale-separated AdS solution of M-theory supported by Casimir energy.

Thermality of the zero-point length and gravitational selfduality

Abstract:It has been argued that the existence of a zero-point length is the hallmark of quantum gravity. In this letter we suggest a thermal mechanism whereby this quantum of length arises in flat, Euclidean spacetime $\mathbb{R}^d$. For this we consider the infinite sequence of all flat, Euclidean spacetimes $\mathbb{R}^{d'}$ with $d'\geq d$, and postulate a probability distribution for each $d'$ to occur. The distribution considered is that of a canonical ensemble at temperature $T$, the energy levels those of a 1-dimensional harmonic oscillator. Since both the harmonic energy levels and the spacetime dimensions are evenly spaced, one can identify the canonical distribution of harmonic-oscillator eigenvalues with that of dimensions $d'$. The state describing this statistical ensemble has a mean square deviation in the position operator, that can be interpreted as a quantum of length. Thus placing an oscillator in thermal equilibrium with a bath provides a thermal mechanism whereby a zero-point length is generated. The quantum-gravitational implications of this construction are then discussed. In particular, a model is presented that realises a conjectured duality between a weakly gravitational, strongly quantum system and a weakly quantum, strongly gravitational system.

Validation of the Jarzynski relation for a system with strong thermal coupling: an isothermal ideal gas model

Abstract:We revisit the paradigm of an ideal gas under isothermal conditions. A moving piston performs work on an ideal gas in a container that is strongly coupled to a heat reservoir. The thermal coupling is modelled by stochastic scattering at the boundaries. In contrast to recent studies of an adiabatic ideal gas with a piston [R.C. Lua and A.Y. Grosberg, \textit{J. Phys. Chem. B} 109, 6805 (2005); I. Bena et al., \textit{Europhys. Lett.} 71, 879 (2005)], container and piston stay in contact with the heat bath during the work process. Under this condition the heat reservoir as well as the system depend on the work parameter $\lambda$ and microscopic reversibility is broken for a moving piston. Our model is thus not included in the class of systems for which the non-equilibrium work theorem has been derived rigorously either by Hamiltonian [C. Jarzynski, \textit{J. Stat. Mech.} P09005 (2004)] or stochastic methods [G.E. Crooks, \textit{J. Stat. Phys.} 90, 1481 (1998)]. Nevertheless the validity of the non-equilibrium work theorem is confirmed both numerically for a wide range of parameter values and analytically in the limit of a very fast moving piston, i.e. in the far non-equilibrium regime.

The Statistical Mechanics of the Self-Gravitating Gas: Equation of State and Fractal Dimension

Abstract:We provide a complete picture of the self-gravitating non-relativistic gas at thermal equilibrium using Monte Carlo simulations (MC), analytic mean field methods (MF) and low density expansions. The system is shown to possess an infinite volume limit, both in the canonical (CE) and in the microcanonical ensemble (MCE) when N, V \to \infty, keeping N/ V^{1/3} fixed. We {\bf compute} the equation of state (we do not assume it as is customary), the entropy, the free energy, the chemical potential, the specific heats, the compressibilities, the speed of sound and analyze their properties, signs and singularities. The MF equation of state obeys a {\bf first order} non-linear differential equation of Abel type. The MF gives an accurate picture in agreement with the MC simulations both in the CE and MCE. The inhomogeneous particle distribution in the ground state suggest a fractal distribution with Haussdorf dimension D with D slowly decreasing with increasing density, 1 \lesssim D < 3.

Relativistic Langevin dynamics in expanding media

Abstract:We study the consequences of different realizations of diffusion processes in relativistic Langevin simulations. We elaborate on the Ito-Stratonovich dilemma by showing how microscopically calculated transport coefficients as obtained from a Boltzmann-Fokker-Planck equation can be implemented to lead to an unambiguous realization of the Langevin process. Pertinent examples within the prepoint (Ito) and postpoint (Hänggi-Klimontovich) Langevin prescriptions are worked out explicitly. Deviations from this implementation are shown to generate variants of the Boltzmann distribution as the stationary (equilibrium) solutions. Finally, we explicitly verify how the Lorentz invariance of the Langevin process is maintained in the presence of an expanding medium, including the case of an "elliptic flow" transmitted to a Brownian test particle. This is particularly relevant for using heavy-flavor diffusion as a quantitative tool to diagnose transport properties of QCD matter as created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:This paper presents a toy model of a charged relativistic classical gas in flat spacetime of an arbitrary number of dimensions equipped with some ``pair production'' mechanism. Working with the microcanonical ensemble, the charge is taken to be conserved in contrast with the total number of ``particles'' plus ``antiparticles'' which varies with temperature $T$. Thermodynamics of the classical gas is detailed studied in the nonrelativistic ($Mc^{2}\gg kT$) as well as in the ultrarelativistic ($Mc^{2}\ll kT$) regimes. It is shown that, although we are dealing with classical distributions, at the ultrarelativistic regime the behavior of the gas is Planckian. We also compare the thermodynamics of the toy model with that of quantum gases.
