Abstract:Given a polynomial Q(x1,⋯,xt)=λ1x1k1+⋯+λtxtkt, for every c∈Z and n≥2, we study the number of solutions NJ(Q;c,n) of the congruence equation Q(x1,⋯,xt)≡cmodn in (Z/nZ)t such that xi∈(Z/nZ)× for i∈J⊆I={1,⋯,t}. We deduce formulas and an algorithm to study NJ(Q;c,pa) for p any prime number and a≥1 any integer. Abstract:Consider a following NP-problem DOUBLE CLIQUE (abbr.: CLIQ$_{2}$): Given a natural number $k>2$ and a pair of two disjoint subgraphs of a fixed graph $G$ decide whether each subgraph in question contains a $k$-clique. I prove that CLIQ$_{2}$ can't be solved in polynomial time by a deterministic TM, which infers $\mathbf{P}\neq \mathbf{NP}$. This proof upgrades the well-known proof of polynomial unsolvability of the partial result with respect to analogous monotone problem CLIQUE (abbr.: CLIQ) as well as my previous presentation that used appropriate 3-value semantics. Note that problem CLIQ$_{2}$ is not monotone and appears more complex than just iterated CLIQ, as the required subgraphs are mutually dependent.

Abstract:As society becomes more reliant on computers, cryptographic security becomes increasingly important. Current encryption schemes include the ElGamal signature scheme, which depends on the complexity of the discrete logarithm problem. It is thought that the functions that such schemes use have inverses that are computationally intractable. In relation to this, we are interested in counting the solutions to a generalization of the discrete logarithm problem modulo a prime power. This is achieved by interpolating to p-adic functions, and using Hensel's lemma, or other methods in the case of singular lifting, and the Chinese Remainder Theorem.

Abstract:We present a framework for constructing congruence closure modulo permutation equations, which extends the abstract congruence closure framework for handling permutation function symbols. Our framework also handles certain interpreted function symbols satisfying each of the following properties: idempotency (I), nilpotency (N), unit (U), I U U, or N U U. Moreover, it yields convergent rewrite systems corresponding to ground equations containing permutation function symbols. We show that congruence closure modulo a given finite set of permutation equations can be constructed in polynomial time using equational inference rules, allowing us to provide a polynomial time decision procedure for the word problem for a finite set of ground equations with a fixed set of permutation function symbols.

Abstract:Algorithmic issues concerning Elliott local semigroups are seldom considered in the literature, although these combinatorial structures completely classify AF algebras. In general, the addition operation of an Elliott local semigroup is {\it partial}, but for every AF algebra $\mathfrak B$ whose Murray-von Neumann order of projections is a lattice, this operation is uniquely extendible to the addition of an involutive monoid $E(\mathfrak B)$. Let $\mathfrak M_1$ be the Farey AF algebra introduced by the present author in 1988 and rediscovered by F. Boca in 2008. The freeness properties of the involutive monoid $E(\mathfrak M_1)$ yield a natural word problem for every AF algebra $\mathfrak B$ with singly generated $E(\mathfrak B)$, because $\mathfrak B$ is automatically a quotient of $\mathfrak M_1$. Given two formulas $\phi$ and $\psi$ in the language of involutive monoids, the problem asks to decide whether $\phi$ and $\psi$ code the same equivalence of projections of $\mathfrak B$. This mimics the classical definition of the word problem of a group presented by generators and relations. We show that the word problem of $\mathfrak M_1$ is solvable in polynomial time, and so is the word problem of the Behnke-Leptin algebras $\mathcal A_{n,k}$, and of the Effros-Shen algebras $\mathfrak F_{\theta}$, for $\theta\in [0,1]\setminus \mathbb Q$ a real algebraic number, or $\theta = 1/e$. We construct a quotient of $\mathfrak M_1$ having a Gödel incomplete word problem, and show that no primitive quotient of $\mathfrak M_1$ is Gödel incomplete.

Abstract:One way of suggesting that an NP problem may not be NP-complete is to show that it is in the class UP. We suggest an analogous new approach---weaker in strength of evidence but more broadly applicable---to suggesting that concrete~NP problems are not NP-complete. In particular we introduce the class EP, the subclass of NP consisting of those languages accepted by NP machines that when they accept always have a number of accepting paths that is a power of two. Since if any NP-complete set is in EP then all NP sets are in EP, it follows---with whatever degree of strength one believes that EP differs from NP---that membership in EP can be viewed as evidence that a problem is not NP-complete. We show that the negation equivalence problem for OBDDs (ordered binary decision diagrams) and the interchange equivalence problem for 2-dags are in EP. We also show that for boolean negation the equivalence problem is in EP^{NP}, thus tightening the existing NP^{NP} upper bound. We show that FewP, bounded ambiguity polynomial time, is contained in EP, a result that is not known to follow from the previous SPP upper bound. For the three problems and classes just mentioned with regard to EP, no proof of membership/containment in UP is known, and for the problem just mentioned with regard to EP^{NP}, no proof of membership in UP^{NP} is known. Thus, EP is indeed a tool that gives evidence against NP-completeness in natural cases where UP cannot currently be applied.

Abstract:We intend to create new concepts aimed at finding necessary and sufficient conditions for Boolean satisfiability so that these conditions can be verified in polynomial time. Based on these conditions it will be possible to create an algorithm that determines in polynomial time whether a given Boolean formula represented in conjunctive normal form is satisfiable. The work will consist of three articles. This is the first of a planned series of these articles. In this article we introduce the concept of special decomposition of a set and the concept of special covering for a set under such a decomposition. We formulate the decision problem of existance of a special covering for a set under a special decompostition of this set. In order to determine the complexity class in which this problem is located, we study the relationship between the sat CNF problem and the problem of existence of a special covering for a set under a special decomposition of this set. The article proves that the decidability of the sat CNF problem is polynomially reduced to the problem of the existence of a special covering for a set. It is also proved that the problem of existence of a special covering for a set is polynomially reduced to the decidability of the sat CNF problem. Therefore, the mentioned problems are polynomially equivalent. And then, the problem of existence of a special covering for a set is an NP-complete problem. The conditions for the existence of special coverings for a set under special decompositions of this set will be study in the next articles.

Abstract:As a result of impressive research <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.07231" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.07231">arXiv:2106.07231</a>, D. Garc\'ıa-Lucas, Á. del Río and L. Margolis defined an infinite series of non-isomorphic $2$-groups $G$ and $H$, whose group algebras $\mathbb{F}G$ and $\mathbb{F}H$ over the field $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic, solving negatively the long-standing Modular Isomorphism Problem (MIP). In this note we give a different perspective on their examples and show that they are special cases of a more general construction. We also show that this type of construction for $p>2$ does not provide a similar counterexample to the MIP.

Abstract:A class of decision problems related to inconsistency proofs for formal theories is used to show that under a constructive interpretation of computational complexity classes, an assumption referred to as the MW thesis implies that one may explicitly construct decision problems in NP which are not algorithmically solvable. In particular, in this interpretation the MW thesis implies P $\neq$ NP. It is argued that MW is a naturally valid, yet also naturally unformalizable principle.

Abstract:We investigate logics and classes of problems below Fagin's existential second-order logic (ESO) and above Feder and Vardi's logic for constraint satisfaction problems (CSP), the so called monotone monadic SNP without inequality (MMSNP). It is known that MMSNP has a dichotomy between P and NP-complete but the removal of any of these three restrictions imposed on SNP yields a logic that is Ptime equivalent to ESO: so by Ladner's theorem we have three stronger sibling logics that are nondichotomic above MMSNP. In this paper, we explore the area between these four logics, mostly by considering guarded extensions of MMSNP, with the ultimate goal being to obtain logics above MMSNP that exhibit such a dichotomy.

Abstract:The relationship between the complexity classes P and NP is an unsolved question in the field of theoretical computer science. In this paper, we investigate a descriptor approach based on lattice properties. This paper proposes a new way to decide the satisfiability of any 3-CNF-SAT problem. The analysis of this exact [non heuristical] algorithm shows a strictly bounded exponential complexity. The complexity of any 3-CNF-SAT solution is bounded by O(2^490). This over-estimated bound is reached by an algorithm working on the smallest description (via descriptor functions) of the evolving set of solutions in function of the already considered clauses, without exploring these solutions. Any remark about this paper is warmly welcome.

Abstract:The $P$ versus $NP$ problem is still unsolved. But there are several oracles with $P$ unequal $NP$ relative to them. Here we will prove, that $P\not=NP$ relative to a $P$-complete oracle. In this paper, we use padding arguments as the proof method. The padding arguments are not bounded by a computable function. Such as we can use methods from computability theory to separate complexity classes.

Abstract:This article finds the answer to the question: for any problem from which a non-deterministic algorithm can be derived which verifies whether an answer is correct or not in polynomial time (complexity class NP), is it possible to create an algorithm that finds the right answer to the problem in polynomial time (complexity class P)? For this purpose, this article shows a decision problem and analyzes it to demonstrate that this problem does not belong to the complexity class P, but it belongs to the class NP; doing so it will be proved that it exists at least one problem that belongs to class NP but not to class P, which means that this article will prove that not all NP problems are P.

Abstract:One fundamental question in the context of the geometric complexity theory approach to the vs. VNP conjecture is whether = !VP, where is the class of families of polynomials that can be computed by arithmetic circuits of polynomial degree and size, and is the class of families of polynomials that can be approximated infinitesimally closely by arithmetic circuits of polynomial degree and size. The goal of this article is to study the conjecture in (Mulmuley, FOCS 2012) that !VP is not contained in VP.Towards that end, we introduce three degenerations of (i.e., sets of points in VP), namely the stable degeneration Stable-VP, the Newton degeneration Newton-VP, and the p-definable one-parameter degeneration VP*. We also introduce analogous degenerations of VNP. We show that Stable-VP subseteq Newton-VP subseteq VP* subseteq VNP, and Stable-VNP = Newton-VNP = VNP* = VNP. The three notions of degenerations and the proof of this result shed light on the problem of separating from VP.Although we do not yet construct explicit candidates for the polynomial families in !VPVP, we prove results which tell us where not to look for such families. Specifically, we demonstrate that the families in Newton-VP VP based on semi-invariants of quivers would have to be nongeneric by showing that, for many finite quivers (including some wild ones), Newton degeneration of any generic semi-invariant can be computed by a circuit of polynomial size. We also show that the Newton degenerations of perfect matching Pfaffians, monotone arithmetic circuits over the reals, and Schur polynomials have polynomial-size circuits.
