Abstract:<div><p>In 2023, two striking, nearly simultaneous, mathematical discoveries have excited their respective communities, one by Greenfeld and Tao, the other (the Hat tile) by Smith, Myers, Kaplan and Goodman-Strauss, which can both be summed up as the following: there exists a single tile that tiles, but not periodically (sometimes dubbed the einstein problem). The two settings and the tools are quite different (as emphasized by their almost disjoint bibliographies): one in euclidean geometry, the other in group theory. Both are highly nontrivial: in the first case, one allows complex shapes; in the second one, also the space to tile may be complex.</p><p>We propose here a framework that embeds both of these problems. We illustrate our setting by transforming the Hat tile into a new aperiodic group monotile, and we describe its symmetries.</p></div>

Abstract:Exploring nonminimal-rank quasicrystals, which have symmetries that can be found in both periodic and aperiodic crystals, often provides new insight into the physical nature of aperiodic long-range order in models that are easier to treat. Motivated by the prevalence of experimental systems exhibiting aperiodic long-range order with hexagonal and trigonal symmetry, we introduce a generic two-parameter family of 2-dimensional quasiperiodic tilings with such symmetries. We focus on the special case of trigonal and hexagonal Fibonacci, or golden-mean, tilings, analogous to the well studied square Fibonacci tiling. We first generate the tilings using a generalized version of de Bruijn's dual grid method. We then discuss their interpretation in terms of projections of a hypercubic lattice from six dimensional superspace. We conclude by concentrating on two of the hexagonal members of the family, and examining a few of their properties more closely, while providing a set of substitution rules for their generation.

Abstract:A longstanding open problem asks for an aperiodic monotile, also known as an "einstein": a shape that admits tilings of the plane, but never periodic tilings. We answer this problem for topological disk tiles by exhibiting a continuum of combinatorially equivalent aperiodic polygons. We first show that a representative example, the "hat" polykite, can form clusters called "metatiles", for which substitution rules can be defined. Because the metatiles admit tilings of the plane, so too does the hat. We then prove that generic members of our continuum of polygons are aperiodic, through a new kind of geometric incommensurability argument. Separately, we give a combinatorial, computer-assisted proof that the hat must form hierarchical -- and hence aperiodic -- tilings.

Abstract:The art of tiling originated very early in the history of civilization. Almost every known human society has made use of tilings in some form or another. In particular, tilings using only regular polygons have great visual appeal. Decorated regular tilings with continuous and symmetrical patterns were widely used in decoration field, such as mosaics, pavements, and brick walls. In science, these tilings provide inspiration for synthetic organic chemistry. Building on previous CG&A “Beautiful Math” articles, the authors propose an invariant mapping method to create colorful patterns on Archimedean tilings (1-uniform tilings). The resulting patterns simultaneously have global crystallographic symmetry and local cyclic or dihedral symmetry.

Periodicity and decidability of translational tilings by rational polygonal sets

Abstract:The periodic tiling conjecture asserts that if a region $\Sigma\subset \mathbb R^d$ tiles $\mathbb R^d$ by translations then it admits at least one fully periodic tiling. This conjecture is known to hold in $\mathbb R$, and recently it was disproved in sufficiently high dimensions. In this paper, we study the periodic tiling conjecture for polygonal sets: bounded open sets in $\mathbb R^2$ whose boundary is a finite union of line segments. We prove the periodic tiling conjecture for any polygonal tile whose vertices are rational. As a corollary of our argument, we also obtain the decidability of tilings by rational polygonal sets. Moreover, we prove that any translational tiling by a rational polygonal tile is weakly-periodic, i.e., can be partitioned into finitely many singly-periodic pieces.

Abstract:Suppose $f\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is a finite union of translated lattices such that $f+\Lambda$ tiles with a weight. We prove that there exists a lattice $L\subset{\mathbb{R}}^d$ such that $f+L$ also tiles, with a possibly different weight. As a corollary, together with a result of Kolountzakis, it implies that any convex polygon that multi-tiles the plane by translations admits a lattice multi-tiling, of a possibly different multiplicity. Our second result is a new characterization of convex polygons that multi-tile the plane by translations. It also provides a very efficient criteria to tell whether a convex polygon admits translational multi-tilings. As an application, one can easily construct symmetric $(2m)$-gons, for any $m\geq 4$, that do not multi-tile by translations. Finally, we prove a convex polygon which is not a parallelogram only admits periodic multiple tilings, if any.

Abstract:By reformulating Wang tiles with tensors, we propose a natural generalization to the probabilistic and quantum setting. In this new framework, we introduce notions of tilings and periodicity directly extending their classical counterparts. In the one dimensional case, we recover the decidability of the generalized domino problem by linking it to the trace characterization of nilpotent matrices. In the two-dimensional case, we provide extension of weak and strong aperiodicity respectively and show the equivalence of those generalized notions, extending the well known equivalence in the classical case. We also exhibit a quantum tile set being aperiodic while its underlying classical tile set is not, proving that quantum interference can suppress periodic patterns and paving the way to the investigation of a new kind of aperiodicity. Finally, we highlight the many new research directions opened by this generalization of Wang tiles, related to (quantum) cellular automata, condensed matter physics, symbolic dynamics and more.

Many new tilings and properties have been discovered, few of which are covered or anticipated by the early papers and books. Here, we start from the well-known Fibonacci chain to explain some of them, with pointers to various generalisations as well as to higher-dimensional phenomena and results. This should give some entry points to the modern literature on the subject.

Abstract:How many different tiles are needed at the minimum to create aperiodicity? Several tilings made of two tiles were discovered, the first one being by Penrose in the seventies. Since then, scientists discovered other aperiodic tilings made of two tiles, including the square-triangle one, a tiling that has been particularly useful for the study of dodecagonal quasicrystals and soft matters. An open problem still exists: Can one tile be sufficient to create aperiodicity? This is known as the ein stein problem. We present in this paper an aperiodic tiling made of one single tile: an isosceles right triangle. The tile itself is not aperiodic and therefore not a solution to the ein stein problem but we present a set of substitution rules on the same tile that forces the tiling to be aperiodic. This paper presents its construction rules that proves its aperiodicity. We also show that this tiling offers an underlying dodecagonal structure close to the one of square-triangle tiling.

Splitting for integer tilings

Abstract:We consider translational integer tilings by finite sets $A\subset\mathbb{Z}$. We introduce a new method based on \emph{splitting}, together with a new combinatorial interpretation of some of the main tools from our earlier work. We also use splitting to prove the Coven-Meyerowitz conjecture for a new class of tilings $A\oplus B=\mathbb{Z}_M$. This includes tilings of period $M=p_1^{n_1}p_2^{n_2}p_3^{n_3}$ with $p_1>p_2^{n_2-1}p_3^{n_3-1}$, and tilings of period $M=p_1^{n_1}p_2^2p_3^2p_4^2$ with $p_1>p_2p_3p_4$, where $p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4$ are distinct primes and $n_1,n_2,n_3\in\mathbb{N}$. This is the second one of the two papers replacing version 1 of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.11809" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.11809">arXiv:2207.11809</a> (the first one is available as <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.11809" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.11809">arXiv:2207.11809</a> v2). Abstract:This article addresses the problem of enumerating the tilings of a plane by lozenges, under the restriction that these tilings be doubly periodic. Kasteleyn's Pfaffian method is applied to compute the generating function of those permutations. The monomials of this function represent the different types of tilings, grouping them according to the number of lozenges in each orientation. We present an alternative approach to compute these types. Finally, two additional classes of tilings are proposed as open enumeration problems.

Abstract:The recently discovered "hat" aperiodic monotile mixes unreflected and reflected tiles in every tiling it admits, leaving open the question of whether a single shape can tile aperiodically using translations and rotations alone. We show that a close relative of the hat -- the equilateral member of the continuum to which it belongs -- is a weakly chiral aperiodic monotile: it admits only non-periodic tilings if we forbid reflections by fiat. Furthermore, by modifying this polygon's edges we obtain a family of shapes called Spectres that are strictly chiral aperiodic monotiles: they admit only chiral non-periodic tilings based on a hierarchical substitution system.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach to composite design by employing aperiodic monotiles, shapes that cover surfaces without translational symmetry. Using a combined computational and experimental approach, we study the fracture behavior of composites crafted with these monotiles, and compared their performance against conventional honeycomb patterns. Remarkably, our aperiodic monotile-based composites exhibited superior stiffness, strength, and toughness in comparison to honeycomb designs. This study suggests that leveraging the inherent disorder of aperiodic structures can usher in a new generation of robust and resilient materials.

Undecidability of translational monotilings

Abstract:In the 60's, Berger famously showed that translational tilings of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with multiple tiles are algorithmically undecidable. Recently, Bhattacharya proved the decidability of translational monotilings (tilings by translations of a single tile) in $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The decidability of translational monotilings in higher dimensions remained unsolved. In this paper, by combining our recently developed techniques with ideas introduced by Aanderaa and Lewis, we finally settle this problem, achieving the undecidability of translational monotilings of (periodic subsets of) virtually $\mathbb{Z}^2$ spaces, namely, spaces of the form $\mathbb{Z}^2\times G_0$, where $G_0$ is a finite Abelian group. This also implies the undecidability of translational monotilings in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$.

Abstract:A grid method using tiling by fundamental domain of simple 2D lattices is presented. It refer to a previous work done by Stampfli in $1986$ using two tilings by regular hexagons, one rotate by $\pi/2$ relatively to the other. This allows to get a quasiperiodic structure with a twelve fold symmetry. The quasiperiodic structure is a tiling of the plane by regular triangles, squares and rhombuses. This can be extented to other examples of tilings by fundamental domain. Two other examples are proposed. The first example also based on the hexagonal lattice, but with grids defined by the fundamental rhombic domain formed by two regular triangles. The second example presents the case of a square lattice with a square fundamental domain.

Abstract:A brief history of planar aperiodic tile sets is presented, starting from the Domino Problem proposed by Hao Wang in 1961. We provide highlights that led to the discovery of the Taylor--Socolar aperiodic monotile in 2010 and the Hat and Spectre aperiodic monotiles in 2023. The Spectre tile is an amazingly simple monotile; a single tile whose translated and rotated copies tile the plane but only in a way that lacks any translational periodicity. We showcase this breakthrough discovery through the 60$+$ years that aperiodic tile sets have been considered.
