Abstract:A novel one pot process has been developed for the preparation of PbS nanocrystals in the conjugated polymer poly 2-methoxy, 5-(2 - ethyl-hexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV). Current techniques for making such composite materials rely upon synthesizing the nanocrystals and conducting polymer separately, and subsequently mixing them. This multi-step technique has two serious drawbacks: templating surfactant must be removed before mixing, and co-solvent incompatibility causes aggregation. In our method, we eliminate the need for an initial surfactant by using the conducting polymer to terminate and template nanocrystal growth. Additionally, the final product is soluble in a single solvent. We present materials analysis which shows PbS nanocrystals can be grown directly in a conducting polymer, the resulting composite is highly ordered and nanocrystal size can be controlled.

Abstract:Non-conjugated polymer-derived functional nanocomposites are one of the important ways to develop multifunctional hybrids. By increasing the degree of crosslinking, their photophysical properties can be improved. PbS is a class of narrow bandgap infrared active materials. To avoid aggregation and passivation of the surface defects of PbS nanomaterials, a large number of organic and inorganic ligands are usually used. In this study, PbS/C composite nanosheets were synthesized with Pb2+ ion-crosslinked sodium alginate gel by one-pot carbonization. The resulting nanosheets were coated on untreated A4 printing paper, and the electrodes were the graphite electrodes with 5B pencil drawings. The photocurrent signals of the products were measured using typical 650, 808, 980, and 1064 nm light sources. The results showed that the photocurrent switching signals were effectively extracted in the visible and near-infrared regions, which was attributed to the mutual passivation of defects during the in situ preparation of PbS and carbon nanomaterials. At the same time, the resulting nanocomposite exhibited electrical switching responses to the applied strain to a certain extent. The photophysical and defect passivation mechanisms were discussed based on the aggregation state of the carbon hybrid and the interfacial electron interaction. This material would have potential applications in broadband flexible photodetectors, tentacle sensors, or light harvesting interdisciplinary areas. This study provided a facile approach to prepare a low-cost hybrid with external stimulus response and multifunctionality. These results show that the interfacial charge transfer is the direct experimental evidence of interfacial interaction, and the regulation of interfacial interaction can improve the physical and chemical properties of nanocomposites, which can meet the interdisciplinary application. The interdisciplinary and application of more non-conjugated polymer systems in some frontier areas will be expanded upon.

Abstract:Improving the stability of perovskite quantum dots and adjusting their optical properties are essential for their application in advanced optoelectronic equipment. We provide a simple synthetic method to hybridize perovskite quantum dots and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a polymer matrix. The hybrid material is made by encapsulating perovskite CH3NH3PbBr3 quantum dots in lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks. A series of lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs), namely, [Ln(tpob)(DMF)(H2O)]n (Lntpob, Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, H3tpob = 1,3,5-tris(4-carbonylphenyloxy)benzene), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and fully characterized. Lntpobs display a three-dimensional (3D) pcu network with central-symmetric [Eu2(COO)4] structural building units (SBUs) linked by one-dimensional (1D) chains. CH3NH3PbBr3@Eutpob hybrids were developed through a three-step process, in which the precursor PbBr2@Eutpob was formed by immersing the Eutpob crystal synthesized in the first step into a PbBr2 solution; then the composite materials could form quickly when CH3NH3Br was added to the precursor. Therefore, the hybrid composite material exhibits luminescent properties related to the excitation wavelength in the form of powders or thin films. In addition, the photoluminescence of the CH3NH3PbBr3@Eutpob composite can be improved and maintained for a long time after it is introduced into the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. Moreover, the emission peak based on the perovskite quantum dots can still maintain about 85% of the original intensity after being left for 30 days. Also, the obtained PMMA films can achieve tunable emission from red to green.

Abstract:Comprehensive SummaryOrganic heterostructures that can integrate the physiochemical properties of two or more substances have attracted widespread attention in the field of optoelectronics. However, the epitaxial growth process between different organic material molecules is unpredictable, and the precise synthesis of organic heterostructures is still particularly challenging. Herein, through the synergy approach of polymorphism and cocrystal engineering, a series of organic branched heterostructures have been successfully prepared. Interestingly, by simply adjusting the solvent ratio, different crystalline phases of perylene microplates can be epitaxially grown on the perylene‐OFN cocrystal microwires, which provides a feasible approach for the preparation of organic heterostructures. Meanwhile, these as‐prepared organic branched heterostructures can realize multi‐channel and multi‐color emission, and act as optical logic gates, which promotes the multifunctional integrated optoelectronics.

Abstract:A molecular dispersed heterojunction solar cell consisting of a polymer and dye coated carbon nanotubes blend sandwiched between metal electrodes has been developed. The dye naphthalocyanine (NaPc) was used as the main sensitiser, while nanotubes and poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT) act as the electron acceptor and the electron donor, respectively. The incorporation of the NaPc in the P3OT/SWNT composite does dramatically increase the layer absorption resulting in a much higher photocurrent. We report on the exploration of new principles and concepts to develop molecular electronic devices for low cost solar cells.

Abstract:We report a conceptually new method for the synthesis of Prussian blue (PB) nanoshells with tunable size using miniemulsion periphery polymerization (MEPP). The process of MEPP involves the preparation of miniemulsion droplets using organometallic surfactants, followed by a coordination polymerization at the periphery of the droplets. The organometallic polymers with nanoshell structure were confirmed by using FT-IR, UV-vis, TEM, SEM, and AFM. WAXD measurements indicated that the shell structure suppressed the crystallization of the polymers. We also discovered that the nanoshell structure can significantly enhance the thermal stability of the materials. The hollow structures plus inherent magnetic properties of PB render the materials potential useful as multifunctional capsules.

Abstract:Hy brid composites obtained upon blending conjugated polymers and colloidal inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals are regarded as attractive photo-active materials for optoelectronic applications. Here we demonstrate that tailoring nanocrystal surface chemistry permits to exert control on non-covalent bonding and electronic interactions between organic and inorganic components. The pendant moieties of organic ligands at the nanocrystal surface do not merely confer colloidal stability while hindering charge separation and transport, but drastically impact morphology of hybrid composites during formation from blend solutions. The relevance of our approach to photovoltaic applications is demonstrated for composites based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) and Pbs nanocrystals, considered as inadequate before the submission of this manuscript, which enable the fabrication of hybrid solar cells displaying a power conversion efficiency that reaches 3 %. Upon (quasi)steady-state and time-resolved analisys of the photo-induced processes in the nanocomposites and their organic and inorganic components, we ascertained that electron transfer occurs at the hybrid interface yielding long-lived separated charge carriers, whereas interfacial hole transfer appears slow. Here we provide a reliable alternative aiming at gaining control over macroscopic optoelectronic properties of polymer/nanocrystal composites by acting at the molecular-level via ligands' pendant moieties, thus opening new possibilities towards efficient solution-processed hybrid solar cells.

Abstract:A novel poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV)/poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) block-copolymer was synthesized by a cross-coupling polycondensation with Pd(PPh3)(2)CI2 and a phase-transfer catalyst., and was confirmed by H-1 NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermal, electrochemical, and photoluminescent properties of the new copolymer have been investigated. The incorporation of triple bonds into the cyano-substituted PPV (CN-PPV) backbone leads to higher oxidation and reduction potentials than poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) and CN-PPV, potentially making the copolymer a good electron-transporting material for use in a light-emitting-diode device.

Abstract:Poly(l-pentyne)s containing biphenyl and phthalimido pendant groups with different spacer lengths {P1(m); -[HC=C(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(m)N(CO)(2)C6H4](n)-, Biph=4,4'-biphenylyl; m = 7, 10} are synthesized in satisfactory yields by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst in toluene at elevated temperatures. The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. Both of the polymers are thermally stable (T-d greater than or less than 300 degrees C) and exhibit nematicity at high temperatures. Their phthalimido groups are converted into amino groups by hydrolysis, which can, after acidification, complex with lead(II) bromide to furnish polyacetylene-perovskite hybrids in high yields. The organic components contribute good solubility to the hybrids, while the perovskite framework induces the polyacetylene chains to align within the inorganic sheets. The hybrids emit a strong UV light of 374 nm upon photoexcitation, whose quantum yield increases with an increase in the spacer length. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Semiconducting Spaghetti-like Organic–Inorganic Nanojunctions Via Sequential Self-Assembly of Conjugated Polymers and Quantum Dots

Abstract:The ability to direct semiconducting polymers and inorganic nanomaterials into complex assemblies renders the creation of organic-inorganic nanocomposites with unique properties and functionalities. Herein, we report the crafting of highly interconnected semiconducting organic-inorganic nanocomposites (referred to as nanojunctions) comprising long poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanowires and lead telluride (PbTe) quantum dots (QDs) via two successive self-assembly processes. First, P3HT chains self-assemble into ultralong one-dimensional (1D) nanowires owing to interchain pi-pi stacking, followed by self-assembly of PbTe QDs on both sides of the P3HT nanowires driven by attractive van der Waals interactions between the hexyl side chains of P3HT and aliphatic chains capped on the surface of PbTe QDs. Notably, an integrated experimental and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation study reveals that the surface coverage of PbTe QDs within the P3HT/PbTe nanojunctions as well as the distance between adjacent PbTe QDs could be conveniently tailored via tuning the QD concentration. Interestingly, the photoluminescence of P3HT progressively decreases with an increased loading of PbTe QDs because of effective charge transfer from P3HT to PbTe. Conceptually, this two-step self-assembly strategy can be readily extended to other semiconducting polymers and a diversity of nanomaterials for potential applications in optoelectronic materials and devices.

Abstract:Concerned with the issue of electron transfer in the photoresponse heterojunctions consisting of the conjugated polymers and nanocrystal semiconductors, this work uses nanocrystals-initiated polymerization to combine the one-dimensional nanostructures with the heterojunction. The ZnO nanocrystals, which are placed on carbon nanotubes, are photoexcited for initiating polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole. The synthesized nanocomposites are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. By using Raman and X-ray photoelectron tools, we clearly reveal the strong interactions in the as-synthesized composites. The films of the materials are measured about photocurrents and current voltage characteristics. The results indicate the remarkable enhancements in these photoresponse properties due to carbon nanotube component. Spectral analysis is carried out to examine the effects of the nanotube component in the composite on the electron transfer.

Abstract:Organic semiconducting emitters integrated with butterfly-mimetic photonic crystals (PhCs) are fascinating for dramatic advantages over light outcoupling efficiency and multifunctional strain sensors, as well as the key step toward electrically pumped lasers. Herein, an unprecedentedly direct mesoscale self-assembly into 1D PhCs is reported through a covalently gridization-driven approach of wide-bandgap conjugated polymers. A simple solvent-casting procedure allows for in situ self-assembly of the state-of-the-art conjugated nanopolymer, poly{[4-(octyloxy)-9,9-diphenylfluoren-2,7-diyl]grid}-co-{[5-(octyloxy)-9,9-diphenylfluoren-2,7-diyl]grid} (PODPFG), into well-defined multilayer architectures with an excellent toughness (30-40 J m<sup>-3</sup> ). This ordered meso-architecture shows a typical Bragg-Snell diffraction behavior to testify the PhC nature, along with a high effective refractive index (1.80-1.88) and optical transmittance (85-87%). The PhC films also exhibit an angle-dependent blue/green photoluminescence switching, an electroluminescence efficiency enhancement by 150-250%, and an amplified spontaneous emission enhancement with ultralow waveguide loss coefficient (2.60 cm<sup>-1</sup> ). Gridization of organic semiconductors offers promising opportunities for cross-scale morphology-directed molecular design in multifunctional organic mechatronics and intelligences.

Abstract:Abstract Lead sulphide (PbS) nanocrystals (NCs) are promising materials for low-cost, high-performance optoelectronic devices. So far, PbS NCs have to be first synthesized with long-alkyl chain organic surface ligands and then be ligand-exchanged with shorter ligands (two-steps) to enable charge transport. However, the initial synthesis of insulated PbS NCs show no necessity and the ligand-exchange process is tedious and extravagant. Herein, we have developed a direct one-step, scalable synthetic method for iodide capped PbS (PbS-I) NC inks. The estimated cost for PbS-I NC inks is decreased to less than 6 $·g −1 , compared with 16 $·g −1 for conventional methods. Furthermore, based on these PbS-I NCs, photodetector devices show a high detectivity of 1.4 × 10 11 Jones and solar cells show an air-stable power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 10%. This scalable and low-cost direct preparation of high-quality PbS-I NC inks may pave a path for the future commercialization of NC based optoelectronics.

Abstract:The use of mixed selective solvents provides an effective mean to control self-assembly of all-conjugated diblock copolymer poly(3-butylthiophene)-b-poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3BHT) into nanostructured morphologies. The solvent and temperature effects on the self-assembly of P3BHT during cooling and subsequent crystallization were explored for the first time. Depending on the poor/good solvent ratio (i.e., anisole/chloroform), P3BHT chains experience different kinetic pathway and yield nanowires at low anisole/chloroform ratio, and nanowires of different width coexisted with nanorings at high anisole/chloroform ratio. Nanocomposites of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-cadmium selenide (P3HT-CdSe) were synthesized via a mild palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling, thereby dispensing with the need for ligand exchange chemistry. A click reaction to yield was P3HT-CdSe also explored. The resulting P3HT-CdSe nanocomposites possess a well-defined interface, thus significantly promoting the dispersion of CdSe within the P3HT matrix and facilitating the electronic interaction between these two components. The P3HT-CdSe nanocomposites at the air/water interface formed via Langmuir isotherms were studied. The photovoltaic devices fabricated from the LB depositions of the P3HT-CdSe nanocomposites exhibited a relatively high short circuit current, ISC, while maintaining a thin film profile.
Atomic-Scale Interface Engineering for Constructing p-CuPc/n-CdS Core–Shell Heterojunctions toward Light-Harvesting Application

Abstract:Benefiting from the intrinsically different and complementary electronic functionalities, organic/inorganic semiconductor heterostructures offer many tantalizing opportunities to create high-performance, low-cost, multifunctional optoelectronic devices. Compared with their bulk counterparts, organic/inorganic core–shell heterojunction nanowires (NWs) possess superior performances in terms of fewer interface defects, sufficient interfacial interactions, and high carrier collection efficiency, as well as easy and flexible device integration. However, the precise spatial control and large-area synthesis of organic/inorganic core–shell heterostructures currently remain a complex and daunting task, mainly due to the large lattice mismatch and the energetically unfavorable nucleation interface between two distinct chemical constituents. Here, an organic NW-guided atomic layer heteroepitaxy strategy is developed to realize large-scale and spatially controlled synthesis of a new type of semiconductor heterostructures made of p-type single-crystalline copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and n-type polycrystalline cadmium sulfide (CdS). By rationally engineering the surface chemistry of the organic NWs and controlling the nucleation condition of the CdS, p-CuPc/n-CdS heterostructures with on-demand structural morphologies and optical properties can be constructed. In addition, the delicately designed p-CuPc/n-CdS core–shell NWs exhibit good photovoltaic behavior and excellent photosensitivity with broadband spectrum detection from ultraviolet-visible to near-infrared. Abstract:This study demonstrates the synthesis of a covellite–polyvinylpyrrolidone nanocomposite matrix using a solution processing approach and the growth of zinc oxide nanorods on an Indium tin oxide coated polyethyleneterephthalate substrate. The study reveals the impact of covellite–polyvinylpyrrolidone on the optoelectronic performances of zinc oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)‐poly(styrenesulfonate), showing enhanced conductivity and improved photo‐response. The findings suggest potential applications in self‐powered photo‐detection, solar cells, and advanced sensors. A nanocomposite matrix of covellite–polyvinylpyrrolidone (CuS–PVP) was synthesized through a solution processing method and applied via spin coating onto hydrothermally grown zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods. Characterization techniques, including X‐ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, confirmed the successful decoration of chain‐like CuS–PVP polymer composites onto hexagonal ZnO nanorods. The UV‐vis spectroscopy revealed an absorption peak at 372 nm, indicating excitonic absorption of ZnO, and a reduction in the band gap from 3.11 to 2.59 eV upon CuS–PVP polymer decoration, enhancing light harvesting efficiency. Photoluminescence spectra demonstrated the lowest charge carrier recombination rate in the ZnO/CuS–PVP sample, promoting efficient charge separation and transportation, supported by Fourier‐transform infrared analysis indicating chemical bonding. Subsequently, the impact of CuS–PVP as an insertion layer in the ZnO/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)‐poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) inorganic–organic heterojunction was investigated. Favorable band alignment between ZnO, CuS–PVP, and PEDOT:PSS improved conduction, increasing current from 0.3394 to 1.14 mA for D2 (poly‐ethyleneterephthalate/Indium tin oxide/ZnO/PEDOT:PSS/Al) and D1 (poly‐ethyleneterephthalate/Indium tin oxide/ZnO/CuS–PVP/PEDOT:PSS/Al) at a +2 V bias. Transient photo‐responses (J–t) at 0 V bias revealed decreased rise and fall times from 0.382 and 1.154 s to 0.301 and 0.229 s for D2 and D1 devices, respectively. This novel approach provides control over charge carrier transport characteristics at the interface, potentially benefiting self‐powered photo‐detection in optoelectronic devices.
