Abstract:We investigate the nonlinear response of a vibrating suspended nanomechanical beam on external periodic driving. The amplitude of the fundamental transverse mode behaves thereby like a weakly damped quantum particle in a driven anharmonic potential. Upon using a Born-Markovian master equation, we calculate the fundamental mode amplitude for varying driving frequencies. In the nonlinear regime, we observe resonances which are absent in the corresponding classical model. They are shown to be associated with resonant multi-phonon excitations. Furthermore, we identify resonant tunneling in a dynamically induced bistable effective potential.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: the macroscopic quantum effects that occur in nano - mechanical resonators under strong driving conditions. Specifically, the author studied the nonlinear response of a suspended nano - mechanical beam that is periodically driven externally. By analogizing the amplitude of the fundamental transverse mode of the beam to a weakly damped quantum particle in a non - resonant potential under driving, the author calculated the amplitude of the fundamental mode at different driving frequencies and discovered resonance phenomena that do not exist in the classical model. ### Research Background and Problem Description 1. **Miniaturization of Nano - mechanical Resonators** With the continuous miniaturization of micro - scale devices, nano - level mechanical resonators can now be manufactured. These resonators can not only play a role in applications such as electromagnetic measurement, ultrasmall force and displacement detection, and radio - frequency signal processing, but also be used to study fundamental physical phenomena, especially the transition from the classical to the quantum domain. 2. **Research Objectives** The main objective of this paper is to reveal the quantum behavior of nano - resonators under strong external AC driving. The author explores the nonlinear response by studying the amplitude of the fundamental transverse vibration mode of the nano - beam under longitudinal compression. The influence of the environment is considered through a thermal bath coupled to the harmonic oscillator. 3. **Research Methods** The author used a continuous model, which was simplified to a single - particle quantum - mechanical time - dependent Hamiltonian, to describe the dynamics of the fundamental mode amplitude \( x \) of the nano - beam. The form of the Hamiltonian is: \[ H_S(t)=-\frac{\hbar^2}{2m^*}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial x^2}+\frac{\tilde{\alpha}}{2}x^2+\frac{\tilde{\beta}}{4}x^4+fx\cos(\omega t) \] where \( m^* \) is the effective mass, \( \tilde{\alpha} \) and \( \tilde{\beta} \) are potential energy parameters, and \( f \) and \( \omega \) are the driving strength and frequency, respectively. 4. **Main Findings** - Under strong driving conditions, the nonlinear response of the quantum system is significantly different from that of the classical system (such as the Duffing oscillator). - Some specific resonance phenomena were observed. These resonances are related to multi - phonon excitation and can be explained by the avoided crossings in the Floquet spectrum. - The phenomenon of resonant tunneling in the dynamically induced bistable effective potential was discovered. ### Conclusion The author's research has revealed the macroscopic quantum effects of nano - mechanical resonators under strong driving conditions, especially the multi - phonon excitation and resonant tunneling phenomena exhibited at the resonance frequencies. These findings not only help to understand the quantum - mechanical behavior at the nano - scale but also provide a theoretical basis for future experimental verification.
