Abstract: Dieter Happel asked the following question: If the $n$-th Hochschild cohomology group of a finite dimensional algebra $\Gamma$ over a field vanishes for all sufficiently large $n$, is the global dimension of $\Gamma$ finite? We give a negative answer to this question.

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:In 1989, D. Happel pointed out for a possible connection between the global dimension of a finite-dimensional algebra and its Hochschild cohomology: is it true that the vanishing of Hochschild cohomology higher groups is sufficient to deduce that the global dimension is finite? After the discovery of a counterexample, Y. Han proposed, in 2006, to reformulate this question to homology. In this survey, after introducing the concepts and results involved, I present the efforts made until now towards the comprehension of Han's conjecture; which includes: examples of algebras that have been proven to satisfy it and extensions that preserve it.

Abstract:For finitely generated modules $M$ and $N $ over a commutative Noetherian local ring $R$, we give various sufficient criteria for detecting freeness of $M$ or $N$ via vanishing of some finitely many Ext modules $\textrm{Ext}^i_R(M,N)$ and finiteness of certain homological dimension of $\textrm{Hom}_R(M,N)$. Some of our results provide partial progress towards answering a question of Ghosh-Takahashi and also generalize their main results in many ways, for instance, by reducing the number of vanishing. Certain special cases of our results allow us to address the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for modules whose (self) dual has finite projective dimension. Along the way, we also provide a negative answer to a question of Gheibi-Takahashi on characteristic modules. Among other things, the notion of residually faithful modules and certain generalizations of it play a crucial role in our study. As some applications of our results, we provide affirmative answers to two questions raised by Tony Se on $n$-semidualizing modules. Namely, we show that over a local ring of depth $t$, every $(t-1)$-semidualizing module of finite G-dimension is free. Moreover, we establish that for normal domains which satisfy Serre's condition $(S_3)$ and are locally Gorenstein in codimension two, the class of $1$-semidualizing modules form a subgroup of the divisor class group. These two groups coincide when, in addition, the ring is locally regular in codimension two.

An algebraic criterion for the vanishing of bounded cohomology

Abstract:We prove the vanishing of bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients for many groups of interest in geometry, dynamics, and algebra. These include compactly supported structure-preserving diffeomorphism groups of certain manifolds; the group of interval exchange transformations of the half line; piecewise linear and piecewise projective groups of the line, giving strong answers to questions of Calegari and Navas; direct limit linear groups of relevance in algebraic K-theory, thereby answering a question by Kastenholz and Sroka and a question of two of the authors and Löh; and certain subgroups of big mapping class groups, such as the stable braid group and the stable mapping class group, proving a conjecture of Bowden. Moreover, we prove that in the recently introduced framework of enumerated groups, the generic group has vanishing bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients. At the heart of our approach is an elementary algebraic criterion called the commuting cyclic conjugates condition that is readily verifiable for the aforementioned large classes of groups.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be a Hopf algebroid and [Formula: see text] a left [Formula: see text]-module algebra. In this paper, we mainly present the duality theorem for the smash product [Formula: see text], and making use of integral theory for Hopf algebroids, we investigate the stability of Gorenstein injective pre-envelopes and Gorenstein projective precovers between the category of [Formula: see text]-modules and the category of [Formula: see text]-modules. Moreover, we establish the relationship between Gorenstein global dimension of [Formula: see text] and that of [Formula: see text], and prove that [Formula: see text] has finite representation type, resp. is selfinjective, resp. is CM-finite [Formula: see text]-Gorenstein, if and only if [Formula: see text] has the same property under suitable conditions. As an application, we investigate the representation dimension of the lower triangular matrix Artin algebra [Formula: see text].

Abstract:In this paper we study the second Hochschild cohomology group HH2(Λ) of a finite dimensional algebra Λ. In particular, we determine HH2(Λ) where Λ is a finite dimensional self-injective algebra of finite representation type over an algebraically closed field K and show that this group is zero for most such Λ; we give a basis for HH2(Λ) in the few cases where it is not zero.

Abstract:It is shown that a bounded quiver algebra having a 2-truncated oriented cycle is of infinite Hochschild homology dimension and global dimension, which generalizes a result of Solotar and Vigu\'{e}-Poirrier to nonlocal ungraded algebras having a 2-truncated oriented cycle of arbitrary length. Therefore, a bounded quiver algebra of finite global dimension has no 2-truncated oriented cycles. Note that the well-known "no loops conjecture", which has been proved to be true already, says that a bounded quiver algebra of finite global dimension has no loops, i.e., truncated oriented cycles of length 1. Moreover, it is shown that a monomial algebra having a truncated oriented cycle is of infinite Hochschild homology dimension and global dimension. Consequently, a monomial algebra of finite global dimension has no truncated oriented cycles.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the first Hochschild cohomology of admissible algebras which can be regarded as a generalization of basic algebras. For this purpose, the authors study differential operators on an admissible algebra. Firstly, differential operators from a path algebra to its quotient algebra as an admissible algebra are discussed. Based on this discussion, the first cohomology with admissible algebras as coefficient modules is characterized, including their dimension formula. Besides, for planar quivers, the k-linear bases of the first cohomology of acyclic complete monomial algebras and acyclic truncated quiver algebras are constructed over the field k of characteristic 0.

Abstract:We construct global homotopies to compute differential Hochschild cohomologies in differential geometry. This relies on two different techniques: a symbol calculus from differential geometry and a coalgebraic version of the van Est theorem. Not only do we obtain an improved version of the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem but we also compute Hochschild cohomologies for related scenarios, e.g. for principal bundles, and invariant versions.

Abstract:Abstract Let $\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}})\subseteq k\,{\mathcal{G}}$ be the principal block algebra of the group algebra $k\,{\mathcal{G}}$ of an infinitesimal group scheme ${\mathcal{G}}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic ${\operatorname{char}}(k)=:p\geq 3$. We calculate the restricted Lie algebra structure of the first Hochschild cohomology ${\mathcal{L}}:={\operatorname{H}}^1(\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}}),\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}}))$ whenever $\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}})$ has finite representation type. As a consequence, we prove that the complexity of the trivial ${\mathcal{G}}$-module $k$ coincides with the maximal toral rank of ${\mathcal{L}}$.
Bounding cohomology classes over semiglobal fields

Abstract:We provide a uniform bound for the index of cohomology classes in $H^i(F, \mu_\ell^{\otimes i-1})$ when $F$ is a semiglobal field (i.e., a one-variable function field over a complete discretely valued field $K$). The bound is given in terms of the analogous data for the residue field of $K$ and its finitely generated extensions of transcendence degree at most one. We also obtain analogous bounds for collections of cohomology classes. Our results provide recursive formulas for function fields over higher rank complete discretely valued fields, and explicit bounds in some cases when the information on the residue field is known. In the process, we prove a splitting result for cohomology classes of degree 3 in the context of surfaces over finite fields.

On Noetherian algebras, Schur functors and Hemmer-Nakano dimensions

Abstract:Important connections in representation theory arise from resolving a finite-dimensional algebra by an endomorphism algebra of a generator-cogenerator with finite global dimension; for instance, Auslander's correspondence, classical Schur--Weyl duality and Soergel's Struktursatz. Here, the module category of the resolution and the module category of the algebra being resolved are linked via an exact functor known as Schur functor. In this paper, we investigate how to measure the quality of the connection between module categories of (projective) Noetherian algebras, $B$, and module categories of endomorphism algebras of generators-relative cogenerators over $B$ which are split quasi-hereditary Noetherian algebras. In particular, we are interested in finding, if it exists, the highest degree $n$ so that the endomorphism algebra of a generator-cogenerator provides an $n$-faithful cover, in the sense of Rouquier, of $B$. The degree $n$ is known as Hemmer-Nakano dimension of the standard modules. We prove that the Hemmer-Nakano dimension of standard modules with respect to a Schur functor from a split highest weight category over a field to the module category of a finite-dimensional algebra $B$ is bounded above by the number of non-isomorphic simple modules of $B$. We establish methods how to reduce computations of Hemmer-Nakano dimensions in the integral setup to computations of Hemmer-Nakano dimensions over finite-dimensional algebras. This theory allows us to derive results for Schur algebras and the BGG category O in the integral setup from the finite-dimensional case using relative dominant dimension. We exhibit several structural properties of deformations of the blocks of the BGG category O establishing an integral version of Soergel's Struktursatz. We show that deformations of the combinatorial Soergel's functor have better homological properties than the classical one.

On the cohomological dimension of kernels of maps to $\mathbb Z$

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated RFRS group of cohomological dimension $2$, then $G$ is virtually free-by-cyclic if and only if $b_2^{(2)}(G) = 0$. This answers a question of Wise and generalises and gives a new proof of a recent theorem of Kielak and Linton, where the same result is obtained under the additional hypotheses that $G$ is virtually compact special and hyperbolic. More generally, we show that if $G$ is a RFRS group of cohomological dimension $n$ and of type $\mathrm{FP}_{n-1}$, then $G$ admits a virtual map to $\mathbb Z$ with kernel of rational cohomological dimension $n-1$ if and only if $b_n^{(2)}(G) = 0$.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring, and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. In this paper, we present some results concerning to vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and finite injective dimension of $\operatorname{Hom}$. Additionally, we extend these results in terms of finite $C$-injective dimension of $\operatorname{Hom}$. We also investigate the consequences of some of these extensions in the case where $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $C$ is a canonical module for $R.$ Furthermore, we provide positive answers to the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ such that $\mathcal{I}_C\operatorname{-id}_R(\operatorname{Hom}_R(M,R))<\infty$ or $M \in \mathcal{A}_C(R)$ with $\mathcal{I}_C \operatorname{-id}_R(\operatorname{Hom}_R(M,M))<\infty$. Moreover, we derive a number of criteria for a semidualizing $R$-module $C$ to be a canonical module for $R$ in terms of the vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and the finite $C$-injective dimension of $\operatorname{Hom}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study finiteness criteria for the Gorenstein homological dimension of groups over a commutative ring of finite weak Gorenstein global dimension and provide good estimations for the Gorenstein weak global dimension of group rings. As a result, we obtain Gorenstein analogues of well known properties in classical homological algebra over some large families of infinite groups. Moreover, we prove that over a commutative ring of finite weak Gorenstein global dimension, the Gorenstein cohomological dimension of a group $G$ bounds the Gorenstein homological dimension of $G$. Finally, we compare the generalized cohomological dimension and the generalized homological dimension of a group, defined by Ikenaga.

Where are the N-Koszul algebras of finite global dimension?

Abstract:The class of $N$-Koszul graded algebras of finite global dimension has gained lots of attention in recent years, especially in the study of Artin-Schelter regular algebras. While structurally rich and concrete, the only known examples of such algebras are either when $N = 2$, i.e. the algebra is Koszul, or when $N = 3$. Under a mild Hilbert series assumption, we rule out the existence of $N$-Koszul graded algebras of finite global dimension for $N$ not prime. Furthermore, we establish strong restrictions on the global dimension of such algebras. This suggests that perhaps the existence of 3-Koszul algebras with finite global dimension and `nice' Hilbert series is an anomaly.

Abstract:We describe a bigraded cocommutative Hopf algebra structure on the weight zero compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. By relating the primitives for the coproduct to graph cohomology, we deduce that $\dim H^{2g+k}_c(\mathcal{A}_g)$ grows at least exponentially with $g$ for $k = 0$ and for all but finitely many positive integers $k$. Our proof relies on a new result of independent interest; we use a filtered variant of the Waldhausen construction to show that Quillen's spectral sequence abutting to the cohomology of $BK(\mathbb{Z})$ is a spectral sequence of Hopf algebras. From the same construction, we also deduce that $\dim H^{\binom{n}{2} - n - k}(\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}))$ grows at least exponentially with $n$, for $k = -1$ and for all but finitely many non-negative integers $k$.

Abstract:We report on computations of the cohomology of GL_2(O_D) and SL_2(O_D), where D<0 is a fundamental discriminant. These computations go well beyond earlier results of Vogtmann and Scheutzow. We use the technique of homology of Voronoi complexes, and our computations recover the integral cohomology away from the primes 2, 3. We observed exponential growth in the torsion subgroup of H^2 as $D$ increases, and compared our data to bounds of Rohlfs.
