Abstract:We study the randomized k-server problem on metric spaces consisting of widely separated subspaces. We give a method which extends existing algorithms to larger spaces with the growth rate of the competitive quotients being at most O(log k). This method yields o(k)-competitive algorithms solving the randomized k-server problem, for some special underlying metric spaces, e.g. HSTs of "small" height (but unbounded degree). HSTs are important tools for probabilistic approximation of metric spaces.

Abstract:We discuss the potential function introduced in [3] for analysis of the online algorithm for k-server problem in resistive space. We show that potential function for the randomized algorithm is an equivalent characterization of resistive spaces, which explains the reason that approach cannot cover the general k-server problem [2,4] while it applies to all the special cases of the server problem which are known to have k-competitive algorithms.

Abstract:The gap between the known randomized and deterministic local distributed algorithms underlies arguably the most fundamental and central open question in distributed graph algorithms. In this paper, we develop a generic and clean recipe for derandomizing LOCAL algorithms. We also exhibit how this simple recipe leads to significant improvements on a number of problem. Two main results are: - An improved distributed hypergraph maximal matching algorithm, improving on Fischer, Ghaffari, and Kuhn [FOCS'17], and giving improved algorithms for edge-coloring, maximum matching approximation, and low out-degree edge orientation. The first gives an improved algorithm for Open Problem 11.4 of the book of Barenboim and Elkin, and the last gives the first positive resolution of their Open Problem 11.10. - An improved distributed algorithm for the Lovász Local Lemma, which gets closer to a conjecture of Chang and Pettie [FOCS'17], and moreover leads to improved distributed algorithms for problems such as defective coloring and $k$-SAT.

Efficient Algorithms and Hardness Results for the Weighted $k$-Server Problem

Abstract:In this paper, we study the weighted $k$-server problem on the uniform metric in both the offline and online settings. We start with the offline setting. In contrast to the (unweighted) $k$-server problem which has a polynomial-time solution using min-cost flows, there are strong computational lower bounds for the weighted $k$-server problem, even on the uniform metric. Specifically, we show that assuming the unique games conjecture, there are no polynomial-time algorithms with a sub-polynomial approximation factor, even if we use $c$-resource augmentation for $c < 2$. Furthermore, if we consider the natural LP relaxation of the problem, then obtaining a bounded integrality gap requires us to use at least $\ell$ resource augmentation, where $\ell$ is the number of distinct server weights. We complement these results by obtaining a constant-approximation algorithm via LP rounding, with a resource augmentation of $(2+\epsilon)\ell$ for any constant $\epsilon > 0$. In the online setting, an $\exp(k)$ lower bound is known for the competitive ratio of any randomized algorithm for the weighted $k$-server problem on the uniform metric. In contrast, we show that $2\ell$-resource augmentation can bring the competitive ratio down by an exponential factor to only $O(\ell^2 \log \ell)$. Our online algorithm uses the two-stage approach of first obtaining a fractional solution using the online primal-dual framework, and then rounding it online.

As a consequence of [Koutsoupias and Papadimitriou, JACM 1995] this also shows that the Work Function Algorithm is strictly (4k-2)-competitive.

Abstract:This paper studies the online k -server problem with max-distance objective, i.e. minimizing the maximum distance moved among all the servers. For this objective, we prove that no deterministic online algorithm has a competitive ratio better than k . We also analyze several classical algorithms for two special cases and show that some algorithms do have a competitive ratio of k and hence optimal. Consequently, we conjecture that any metric space allows for a deterministic k -competitive k -server algorithm with max-distance objective.

Abstract:A great variety of complex networks can be well represented as random graphs with some constraints: for instance, a provided degree distribution, a smaller diameter, and a higher clustering coefficient. Among them, the degree distribution has attracted considerable attention from various science communities in the last few decades. In this paper, we focus mainly on a family of random graphs modeling complex networks that have an exponential degree distribution; i.e., P(k)∼ exp(αk), where k is the degree of a vertex, P(k) is a probability for choosing randomly a vertex with degree equal to k, and α is a constant. To do so, we first introduce two types of operations: type-A operation and type-B operation. By both the helpful operations, we propose an available algorithm A for a seminal model to construct exactly solvable random graphs, which are able to be extended to a graph space S(p,pc,t) with probability parameters p and pc satisfying p+pc=1. Based on the graph space S(p,pc,t), we discuss several topological structure properties of interest on each member N(p,pc,t) itself and find model N(p,pc,t) to exhibit the small-world property and assortative mixing. In addition, we also report a fact that in some cases, two arbitrarily chosen members might have completely different other topological properties, such as the total number of spanning trees, although they share a degree distribution in common. Extensive experimental simulations are in strong agreement with our analytical results.
A Hitting Set Relaxation for $k$-Server and an Extension to Time-Windows

Abstract:We study the $k$-server problem with time-windows. In this problem, each request $i$ arrives at some point $v_i$ of an $n$-point metric space at time $b_i$ and comes with a deadline $e_i$. One of the $k$ servers must be moved to $v_i$ at some time in the interval $[b_i, e_i]$ to satisfy this request. We give an online algorithm for this problem with a competitive ratio of ${\rm polylog} (n,\Delta)$, where $\Delta$ is the aspect ratio of the metric space. Prior to our work, the best competitive ratio known for this problem was $O(k \cdot {\rm polylog}(n))$ given by Azar et al. (STOC 2017). Our algorithm is based on a new covering linear program relaxation for $k$-server on HSTs. This LP naturally corresponds to the min-cost flow formulation of $k$-server, and easily extends to the case of time-windows. We give an online algorithm for obtaining a feasible fractional solution for this LP, and a primal dual analysis framework for accounting the cost of the solution. Together, they yield a new $k$-server algorithm with poly-logarithmic competitive ratio, and extend to the time-windows case as well. Our principal technical contribution lies in thinking of the covering LP as yielding a {\em truncated} covering LP at each internal node of the tree, which allows us to keep account of server movements across subtrees. We hope that this LP relaxation and the algorithm/analysis will be a useful tool for addressing $k$-server and related problems.

Abstract:As introduced by Bollobás, a graph G is weakly H ‐saturated if the complete graph Kn is obtained by iteratively completing copies of H minus an edge. For all graphs H , we obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the critical threshold pc , at which point the Erdős–Rényi graph Gn,p is likely to be weakly H ‐saturated. We also prove an upper bound for pc , for all H which are, in a sense, strictly balanced. In particular, we improve the upper bound by Balogh, Bollobás, and Morris for H=Kr , and we conjecture that this is sharp up to constants.

Abstract:The semi-random graph process is a single player game in which the player is initially presented an empty graph on $n$ vertices. In each round, a vertex $u$ is presented to the player independently and uniformly at random. The player then adaptively selects a vertex $v$, and adds the edge $uv$ to the graph. For a fixed monotone graph property, the objective of the player is to force the graph to satisfy this property with high probability in as few rounds as possible. In this paper, we introduce a natural generalization of this game in which $k$ random vertices $u_1, \ldots, u_k$ are presented to the player in each round. She needs to select one of the presented vertices and connect to any vertex she wants. We focus on the following three monotone properties: minimum degree at least $\ell$, the existence of a perfect matching, and the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle.

Abstract:We study the greedy independent set algorithm on sparse Erdős-Rényi random graphs ${\mathcal G}(n,c/n)$. This range of $p$ is of interest due to the threshold at $c=e$, beyond which it appears that greedy algorithms are affected by a sudden change in the independent set landscape. A large deviation principle was recently established by Bermolen et al. (2020), however, the proof and rate function are somewhat involved. Upper bounds for the rate function were obtained earlier by Pittel (1982). By discrete calculus, we identify the optimal trajectory realizing a given large deviation and obtain the rate function in a simple closed form. In particular, we show that Pittel's bounds are sharp. The proof is brief and elementary. We think the methods presented here will be useful in analyzing the tail behavior of other random growth and exploration processes.

Abstract:The k -server problem was introduced by Manasse et al. (in: Proceedings of the 20th annual ACM symposium on theory of computing, Chicago, Illinois, USA, pp 322–333, 1988), and is one of the most famous and well-studied online problems. Koutsoupias and Papadimitriou (J ACM 42(5):971–983, 1995) showed that the work function algorithm ( WFA ) has a competitive ratio of at most 2 k - 1 for the k -server problem. In this paper, by proposing a potential function that is different from the one in Koutsoupias and Papadimitriou (1995), we show that the WFA has a competitive ratio of at most n - 1 , where n is the number of points in the metric space. When n < 2 k , this ratio is less than 2 k - 1 .

Abstract:A fundamental problem in distributed computing is the task of cooperatively executing a given set of $t$ tasks by $p$ processors where the communication medium is dynamic and subject to failures. The dynamics of the communication medium lead to groups of processors being disconnected and possibly reconnected during the entire course of the computation furthermore tasks can have dependencies among them. In this paper, we present a randomized algorithm whose competitive ratio is dependent on the dynamics of the communication medium and also on the nature of the dependencies among the tasks.

Tight Bounds for Connectivity of Random K-out Graphs

Abstract:Random K-out graphs are used in several applications including modeling by sensor networks secured by the random pairwise key predistribution scheme, and payment channel networks. The random K-out graph with $n$ nodes is constructed as follows. Each node draws an edge towards $K$ distinct nodes selected uniformly at random. The orientation of the edges is then ignored, yielding an undirected graph. An interesting property of random K-out graphs is that they are connected almost surely in the limit of large $n$ for any $K \geq2$. This means that they attain the property of being connected very easily, i.e., with far fewer edges ($O(n)$) as compared to classical random graph models including Erdős-Rényi graphs ($O(n \log n)$). This work aims to reveal to what extent the asymptotic behavior of random K-out graphs being connected easily extends to cases where the number $n$ of nodes is small. We establish upper and lower bounds on the probability of connectivity when $n$ is finite. Our lower bounds improve significantly upon the existing results, and indicate that random K-out graphs can attain a given probability of connectivity at much smaller network sizes than previously known. We also show that the established upper and lower bounds match order-wise; i.e., further improvement on the order of $n$ in the lower bound is not possible. In particular, we prove that the probability of connectivity is $1-\Theta({1}/{n^{K^2-1}})$ for all $K \geq 2$. Through numerical simulations, we show that our bounds closely mirror the empirically observed probability of connectivity.

Sandwiching Random Geometric Graphs and Erdos-Renyi with Applications: Sharp Thresholds, Robust Testing, and Enumeration

Abstract:The distribution $\mathsf{RGG}(n,\mathbb{S}^{d-1},p)$ is formed by sampling independent vectors $\{V_i\}_{i = 1}^n$ uniformly on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ and placing an edge between pairs of vertices $i$ and $j$ for which $\langle V_i,V_j\rangle \ge \tau^p_d,$ where $\tau^p_d$ is such that the expected density is $p.$ Our main result is a poly-time implementable coupling between Erdős-Rényi and $\mathsf{RGG}$ such that $\mathsf{G}(n,p(1 - \tilde{O}(\sqrt{np/d})))\subseteq \mathsf{RGG}(n,\mathbb{S}^{d-1},p)\subseteq \mathsf{G}(n,p(1 + \tilde{O}(\sqrt{np/d})))$ edgewise with high probability when $d\gg np.$ We apply the result to: 1) Sharp Thresholds: We show that for any monotone property having a sharp threshold with respect to the Erdős-Rényi distribution and critical probability $p^c_n,$ random geometric graphs also exhibit a sharp threshold when $d\gg np^c_n,$ thus partially answering a question of Perkins. 2) Robust Testing: The coupling shows that testing between $\mathsf{G}(n,p)$ and $\mathsf{RGG}(n,\mathbb{S}^{d-1},p)$ with $\epsilon n^2p$ adversarially corrupted edges for any constant $\epsilon>0$ is information-theoretically impossible when $d\gg np.$ We match this lower bound with an efficient (constant degree SoS) spectral refutation algorithm when $d\ll np.$ 3) Enumeration: We show that the number of geometric graphs in dimension $d$ is at least $\exp(dn\log^{-7}n)$, recovering (up to the log factors) the sharp result of Sauermann.

k-Connectivity in Random Key Graphs with Unreliable Links

Abstract:Random key graphs form a class of random intersection graphs and are naturally induced by the random key predistribution scheme of Eschenauer and Gligor for securing wireless sensor network (WSN) communications. Random key graphs have received much interest recently, owing in part to their wide applicability in various domains including recommender systems, social networks, secure sensor networks, clustering and classification analysis, and cryptanalysis to name a few. In this paper, we study connectivity properties of random key graphs in the presence of unreliable links. Unreliability of the edges are captured by independent Bernoulli random variables, rendering edges of the graph to be on or off independently from each other. The resulting model is an intersection of a random key graph and an Erdos-Renyi graph, and is expected to be useful in capturing various real-world networks; e.g., with secure WSN applications in mind, link unreliability can be attributed to harsh environmental conditions severely impairing transmissions. We present conditions on how to scale this model's parameters so that i) the minimum node degree in the graph is at least k, and ii) the graph is k-connected, both with high probability as the number of nodes becomes large. The results are given in the form of zeroone laws with critical thresholds identified and shown to coincide for both graph properties. These findings improve the previous results by Rybarczyk on the k-connectivity of random key graphs (with reliable links), as well as the zero-one laws by Yagan on the 1-connectivity of random key graphs with unreliable links.

An In-Depth Analysis of Stochastic Kronecker Graphs

Abstract:Graph analysis is playing an increasingly important role in science and industry. Due to numerous limitations in sharing real-world graphs, models for generating massive graphs are critical for developing better algorithms. In this paper, we analyze the stochastic Kronecker graph model (SKG), which is the foundation of the Graph500 supercomputer benchmark due to its favorable properties and easy parallelization. Our goal is to provide a deeper understanding of the parameters and properties of this model so that its functionality as a benchmark is increased. We develop a rigorous mathematical analysis that shows this model cannot generate a power-law distribution or even a lognormal distribution. However, we formalize an enhanced version of the SKG model that uses random noise for smoothing. We prove both in theory and in practice that this enhancement leads to a lognormal distribution. Additionally, we provide a precise analysis of isolated vertices, showing that the graphs that are produced by SKG might be quite different than intended. For example, between 50% and 75% of the vertices in the Graph500 benchmarks will be isolated. Finally, we show that this model tends to produce extremely small core numbers (compared to most social networks and other real graphs) for common parameter choices.

On the Robustness, Connectivity and Giant Component Size of Random K-out Graphs

Abstract:Random K-out graphs are garnering interest in designing distributed systems including secure sensor networks, anonymous crypto-currency networks, and differentially-private decentralized learning. In these security-critical applications, it is important to model and analyze the resilience of the network to node failures and adversarial captures. Motivated by this, we analyze how the connectivity properties of random K-out graphs vary with the network parameters $K$, the number of nodes ($n$), and the number of nodes that get failed or compromised ($\gamma_n$). In particular, we study the conditions for achieving \emph{connectivity} {with high probability} and for the existence of a \emph{giant component} with formal guarantees on the size of the largest connected component in terms of the parameters $n,~K$, and $\gamma_n$. Next, we analyze the property of \emph{$r$-robustness} which is a stronger property than connectivity and leads to resilient consensus in the presence of malicious nodes. We derive conditions on $K$ and $n$ under which the random K-out graph achieves r-robustness with high probability. We also provide extensive numerical simulations and compare our results on random K-out graphs with known results on Erdős-Rényi (ER) graphs.
