Abstract: In this paper we describe an operation on directed graphs which produces a graph with fewer vertices, such that the C*-algebra of the new graph is Morita equivalent to that of the original graph. We unify and generalize several related constructions, notably delays and desingularizations of directed graphs.

Abstract:We introduce $C^*$-algebras associated to directed graphs of groups. In particular, we associate a combinatorial $C^*$-algebra to each row-finite directed graph of groups with no sources, and show that this $C^*$-algebra is Morita equivalent to the crossed product coming from the corresponding group action on the boundary of a directed tree. Finally, we show that these $C^*$-algebras (and their Morita equivalent crossed products) contain the class of stable UCT Kirchberg algebras.

The covariant functoriality of graph algebras

Abstract:In the standard category of directed graphs, graph morphisms map edges to edges. By allowing graph morphisms to map edges to finite paths (path homomorphisms of graphs), we obtain an ambient category in which we determine subcategories enjoying covariant functors to categories of algebras given by constructions of path algebras, Cohn path algebras, and Leavitt path algebras, respectively. Thus we obtain new tools to unravel homomorphisms between Leavitt path algebras and graph C*-algebras. In particular, a graph-algebraic presentation of the inclusion of the C*-algebra of a quantum real projective plane into the Toeplitz algebra allows us to determine a quantum CW-complex structure of the former. It comes as a mixed-pullback theorem where two $*$-homomorphisms are covariantly induced from path homomorphisms of graphs and the remaining two are contravariantly induced by admissible inclusions of graphs. As a main result and an application of new covariant-induction tools, we prove such a mixed-pullback theorem for arbitrary graphs whose all vertex-simple loops have exits, which substantially enlarges the scope of examples coming from noncommutative topology.

Abstract:We describe proper correspondences from graph C*-algebras to arbitrary C*-algebras by K-theoretic data. If the target C*-algebra is a graph C*-algebra as well, we may lift an isomorphism on a certain invariant to correspondences back and forth that are inverse to each other up to ideal-preserving homotopy. This implies a classification theorem for purely infinite graph C*-algebras up to stable isomorphism.

Moreover, this correspondence motivates the study of many classes of algebras like Morita algebras and gendo‐symmetric algebras. Explicitly, the Morita–Tachikawa correspondence describes that endomorphism algebras of generators–cogenerators over finite‐dimensional algebras are exactly the finite‐dimensional algebras with dominant dimension at least two. In this paper, we introduce the concepts of quasi‐generators and quasi‐cogenerators that generalise generators and cogenerators, respectively. Using these new concepts, we present higher versions of the Morita–Tachikawa correspondence that take into account relative dominant dimension with respect to a self‐orthogonal module with arbitrary projective and injective dimensions. These new versions also hold over Noetherian algebras that are finitely generated and projective over a commutative Noetherian ring.

Abstract:Let G and H be ample groupoids and let R be a commutative unital ring. We show that if G and H are equivalent in the sense of Muhly–Renault–Williams, then the associated Steinberg algebras are Morita equivalent. We deduce that collapsing a “collapsible subgraph” of a directed graph in the sense of Crisp and Gow does not change the Morita-equivalence class of the associated Leavitt path R-algebra, and therefore a number of graphical constructions which yield Morita equivalent C⁎-algebras also yield Morita equivalent Leavitt path algebras.

Abstract:The Graded Classification Conjecture states that for finite directed graphs $E$ and $F$, the associated Leavitt path algebras $L_\K(E)$ and $L_\K(F)$ are graded Morita equivalent, i.e., $\Gr L_\K(E) \approx_{\gr} \Gr L_\K(F)$, if and only if, their graded Grothendieck groups are isomorphic $K_0^{\gr}(L_\K(E)) \cong K_0^{\gr}(L_\K(F))$ as order-preserving $\mathbb Z[x,x^{-1}]$-modules. Furthermore, if under this isomorphism, the class $[L_\K(E)]$ is sent to $[L_\K(F)]$ then the algebras are graded isomorphic, i.e., $L_\K(E) \cong _{\gr} L_\K(F)$. In this note we show that, for finite graphs $E$ and $F$ with so sinks and sources, an order-preserving $\mathbb Z[x,x^{-1}]$-module isomorphism $K_0^{\gr}(L_\K(E)) \cong K_0^{\gr}(L_\K(F))$ gives that the categories of locally finite dimensional graded modules of $L_\K(E)$ and $L_\K(F)$ are equivalent, i.e., $\fGr[\mathbb{Z}] L_\K(E)\approx_{\gr} \fGr[\mathbb{Z}]L_\K(F).$ We further obtain that the category of finite dimensional (graded) modules are equivalent, i.e., $\fModd L_\K(E) \approx \fModd L_\K(F)$ and $\fGr L_\K(E) \approx_{\gr} \fGr L_\K(F)$.

Abstract:This survey reports on current progress of programs to classify graph C*-algebras and Leavitt path algebras up to Morita equivalence using K-theory. Beginning with an overview and some history, we trace the development of the classification of simple and nonsimple graph C*-algebras and state theorems summarizing the current status of these efforts. We then discuss the much more nascent efforts to classify Leavitt path algebras, and we describe the current status of these efforts as well as outline current impediments that must be solved for this classification program to progress. In particular, we give two specific open problems that must be addressed in order to identify the correct K-theoretic invariant for classification of simple Leavitt path algebras, and we discuss the significance of various possible outcomes to these open problems.

Equivariant homotopy classification of graph C*-algebras

Abstract:We show that shift equivalence of essential adjacency matrices coincides with gauge-equivariant homotopy equivalence of their stabilized graph C*-algebras. This provide the first equivalent formulation of shift equivalence of essential matrices in terms of gauge actions on graph C*-algebras. Our proof uses bicategory theory for C*-bimodules developed by Meyer and Sehnem, allowing us to avoid the use of K-theory classification of C*-algebras.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of the notion of operad that we call a contractad, whose set of operations is indexed by connected graphs and whose composition rules are numbered by contractions of connected subgraphs. We show that many classical operads, such as the operad of commutative algebras, Lie algebras, associative algebras, pre-Lie algebras, the little disks operad, and the operad of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ admit generalizations to contractads. We explain that standard tools like Koszul duality and the machinery of Gröbner bases can be easily generalized to contractads. We verify the Koszul property of the commutative, Lie, associative, and Gerstenhaber contractads.

Abstract:Higher rank graphs, also known as $k$-graphs, are a $k$-dimensional generalization of directed graphs and a rich source of examples of $C^*$-algebras. In the present paper, we contribute to the geometric classification program for $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras by introducing a new move on $k$-graphs, called LiMaR-split, which is a generalization of outsplit for directed graphs. We show, under one additional assumption, that LiMaR-split preserves the $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras up to Morita equivalence.

KK-duality for self-similar groupoid actions on graphs

Abstract:We extend Nekrashevych's $KK$-duality for $C^*$-algebras of regular, recurrent, contracting self-similar group actions to regular, contracting self-similar groupoid actions on a graph, removing the recurrence condition entirely and generalising from a finite alphabet to a finite graph. More precisely, given a regular and contracting self-similar groupoid $(G,E)$ acting faithfully on a finite directed graph $E$, we associate two $C^*$-algebras, $\mathcal{O}(G,E)$ and $\widehat{\mathcal{O}}(G,E)$, to it and prove that they are strongly Morita equivalent to the stable and unstable Ruelle C*-algebras of a Smale space arising from a Wieler solenoid of the self-similar limit space. That these algebras are Spanier-Whitehead dual in $KK$-theory follows from the general result for Ruelle algebras of irreducible Smale spaces proved by Kaminker, Putnam, and the last author.

Abstract:We show that the stable C*-algebra and the related Ruelle algebra defined by L Putnam from the irreducible Smale space associated with a topologically mixing expanding map of a compact metric space are strongly Morita equivalent to the groupoid C*-algebras defined directly from the expanding map by C. Anantharaman-Delaroche and V. Deaconu. As an application, we calculate the K*-group of the Ruelle algebra for a solenoid.
From length-preserving pushouts of graphs to one-surjective pullbacks of graph algebras

Abstract:The unions of directed graphs are the simplest examples of pushouts of directed graphs. The conditions under which they contravariantly induce surjective gauge-equivariant pullbacks of graph C*-algebras have been well studied and vastly instantiated in noncommutative topology (e.g., quantum balls and spheres). Herein, we go beyond the unions of graphs to systematically determine optimal conditions for more general length-preserving pushouts of graphs under which they contravariantly induce graded pullbacks of path algebras, Leavitt path algebras, and graph C*-algebras. Our pullbacks are surjective only on one side, as dictated by natural examples and K-theory. The proposed new approach enlarges the scope of applications from admissible subgraphs (also called quotient graphs) to generalizations of unlabeled foldings of Stallings and collapsing the line graphs of graphs to initial graphs. Moreover, we introduce the concept of locally derived graphs, which substantially extends the paradigm of derived graphs (or skew products of graphs), and use the projection foldings from locally derived graphs to their base (or voltage) graphs to obtain one-surjective pullbacks of graph C*-algebras.

Abstract:By a theorem due to Kato and Ohtake, any (not necessarily strict) Morita context induces an equivalence between appropriate subcategories of the module categories of the two rings in the Morita context. These are in fact categories of firm modules for non-unital subrings. We apply this result to various Morita contexts associated to a comodule $\Sigma$ of an $A$-coring $\cC$. This allows to extend (weak and strong) structure theorems in the literature, in particular beyond the cases when any of the coring $\cC$ or the comodule $\Sigma$ is finitely generated and projective as an $A$-module. That is, we obtain relations between the category of $\cC$-comodules and the category of firm modules for a firm ring $R$, which is an ideal of the endomorphism algebra $^\cC(\Sigma)$. For a firmly projective comodule of a coseparable coring we prove a strong structure theorem assuming only surjectivity of the canonical map.

Abstract:Given a locally compact quantum group and two $\mathbb{G}$-$W^*$-algebras $\alpha: A\curvearrowleft \mathbb{G}$ and $\beta: B\curvearrowleft \mathbb{G}$, we study the notion of equivariant $W^*$-Morita equivalence $(A, \alpha)\sim_{\mathbb{G}} (B, \beta)$, which is an equivariant version of Rieffel's notion of $W^*$-Morita equivalence. We prove that important dynamical properties of $\mathbb{G}$-$W^*$-algebras, such as (inner) amenability, are preserved under equivariant Morita equivalence. For a coideal von Neumann algebra $L^\infty(\mathbb{K}\backslash \mathbb{G})\subseteq L^\infty(\mathbb{G})$ with dual coideal von Neumann algebra $L^\infty(\check{\mathbb{K}})\subseteq L^\infty(\check{\mathbb{G}})$, we use a natural $\check{\mathbb{G}}$-$W^*$-Morita equivalence $L^\infty(\mathbb{K}\backslash \mathbb{G})\rtimes_\Delta \mathbb{G} \sim_{\check{\mathbb{G}}} L^\infty(\check{\mathbb{K}})$ to relate dynamical properties of $L^\infty(\mathbb{K}\backslash \mathbb{G})$ with dynamical properties of $L^\infty(\check{\mathbb{K}})$. We use this to refine some recent results established by Anderson-Sackaney and Khosravi. This refinement allows us to answer a question of Kalantar, Kasprzak, Skalski and Vergnioux, namely that for $\mathbb{H}$ a closed quantum subgroup of the compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$, coamenability of $\mathbb{H}\backslash \mathbb{G}$ and relative amenability of $\ell^\infty(\check{\mathbb{H}})$ in $\ell^\infty(\check{\mathbb{G}})$ are equivalent. Moreover, we prove that for compact ergodic $\mathbb{G}$-$W^*$-algebras $(A, \alpha)$ and $(B, \beta)$, we have that $(A, \alpha)$ and $(B, \beta)$ are $\mathbb{G}$-$W^*$-Morita equivalent if and only if the associated $\mathbb{G}$-$C^*$-algebras $(\mathcal{R}(A), \alpha)$ and $(\mathcal{R}(B), \beta)$ of regular elements are $\mathbb{G}$-$C^*$-Morita equivalent.
