Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field $K$ and let $\varphi: X \to X$ a polarized endomorphism of degree $d \geq 2$. Let $\widehat{h}_{\varphi}$ be the canonical height associated to $\varphi$ on $X(\overline{K})$. Given a generic sequence of points $(x_n)$ with $\widehat{h}_{\varphi}(x_n) \to 0$ and a place $v \in M_K$, Yuan [Yua08] has shown that the conjugates of $x_n$ equidistribute to the canonical measure $\mu_{\varphi,v}$. When $v$ is archimedean, we will prove a quantitative version of Yuan's result. We give two applications of our result to polarized endomorphisms $\varphi$ of smooth projective surfaces that are defined over a number field $K$. The first is an exponential rate of convergence for periodic points of period $n$ to the equilibrium measure and the second is an exponential lower bound on the degree of the extension containing all periodic points of period $n$. When $X$ is an abelian variety, we also give an upper bound on the smallest degree of a hypersurface that contains all points $x \in X(\overline{K})$ satisfying $[K(x):K] \leq D$ and $\widehat{h}_X(x) \leq \frac{c}{D^8}$ for some fixed constant $c > 0$ where $\widehat{h}_X$ is the Neron--Tate height for $X$.

Bounded Equidistribution of Special Subvarieties in Mixed Shimura Varieties

Abstract:In this paper, we study the equidistribution of certain families of special subvarieties in general mixed Shimura varieties. We introduce the notion of bounded sequences of special subvarieties, and we prove that the André–Oort conjecture holds for such sequences. The proof follows the equidistribution approach used by Clozel, Ullmo, and Yafaev in the pure case. We then propose the notion of test invariant of a special subvariety, which is adapted from the lower bound formula of degrees of special subvarieties in the pure case studied by Ullmo and Yafaev, and we show that sequences of special subvarieties with bounded test invariants are bounded, hence the André–Oort conjecture holds in this case.

Abstract:C.J. Smyth was among the first to study the spectrum of the Weil height in the field of all totally real numbers, establishing both lower and upper bounds for the limit infimum of the height of all totally real integers and determining isolated values of the height. Later, Bombieri and Zannier established similar results for totally p-adic numbers and, inspired by work of Ullmo and Zhang, termed this the Bogomolov property. In this paper, we use results on equidistribution of points of low height to generalize both Bogomolov-type results to a wide variety of heights arising in arithmetic dynamics.

Abstract:A classical theorem of Minkowski and Hlawka states that there exists a lattice in R^n with packing density at least 2^{1-n}. Buser and Sarnak proved the analogue of this result in the context of complex abelian varieties. Here we give an improvement of this analogue; this shows a conjecture of Muetzel.

Approximation of adelic divisors and equidistribution of small points

Abstract:We study the asymptotic distribution of Galois orbits of algebraic points with small height in a projective variety over a number field. Our main result is a generalization of Yuan's equidistribution theorem that does not require Zhang's lower bound for the essential minimum to be attained. It extends to all projective varieties a theorem of Burgos Gil, Philippon, Rivera-Letelier and the second author for toric varieties, and implies the semiabelian equidistribution theorem of Kühne. We also generalize previous work of Chambert-Loir and Thuillier to prove new logarithmic equidistribution results. In the last section, we extend our main theorem to the quasi-projective setting recently introduced by Yuan and Zhang.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the bounded case of the Andre-Oort conjecture for special subvarieties in a mixed Shimura variety. This generalizes previous results of L. Clozel, E. Ullmo, and A. Yafaev. The proof is reduced to a special case of the equidistribution conjecture for mixed Shimura varieties. The main tool is a theorem of S. Mozes and N. Shah for certain measures on lattice spaces.
Asymptotics of integral points, equivariant compactifications and equidistributions for homogeneous spaces

Abstract:Let U be a homogeneous variety over rational numbers of some linear algebraic group. Fix an integral model and assume the existence of infinitely many integral points. Then one would like to give an asymptotic count with the help of some height function. In many cases, with the help of measure rigidity of unipotent flows, we reduce this problem to one on equivariant birational geometry. For instance, we show that if G and H are both connected, semisimple, simply connected and without compact factors, then U=G/H is strongly Hardy-Littlewood with respect to certain height function. We also show that when H is "large" in H and both G and H are connected, reductive and without non-trivial Q-characters, then for every equivariant height, the asymptotic of integral points is the same as the volume asymptotic up to a constant. Three concrete examples with explicit heights are also provided to illustrate our approach.

Abstract:In the paper "Uniformity of Mordell-Lang" by Vesselin Dimitrov, Philipp Habegger and Ziyang Gao (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.10276" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.10276">arXiv:2001.10276</a>), they use Silverman-Tate's Height Inequality and they give a proof of the same which makes use of Cartier divisors and hence drops the flatness assumption of structure morphisms of compactified abelian schemes. However, their proof makes use of Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities which is unknown for fields of positive characteristic. We try to slightly modify their ideas, use blow-ups in place of Hironaka's theorem to make the proof effective for any fields with product formula where heights can be defined and any normal quasi-projective variety as a base. We work in the more general set up of dynamical systems. As an application we prove certain variant of Silverman's Specialization Theorem with restricted hypotheses in higher dimensional bases.

Intersecting subvarieties of abelian schemes with group subschemes I

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the following family version of Habegger's bounded height theorem on abelian varieties: a locally closed subvariety of an abelian scheme with Gao's $t^{\mathrm{th}}$ degeneracy locus removed, intersected with all flat group subschemes of relative dimension at most $t$, gives a set of bounded total height. Our main tools include the Ax--Schanuel theorem, and intersection theory of adelic line bundles as developed by Yuan--Zhang. As two applications, we generalize Silverman's specialization theorem to a higher dimensional base, and establish a bounded height result towards Zhang's ICM Conjecture.

Heights of pre-special points of Shimura varieties

Abstract:Let s be a special point on a Shimura variety, and x a pre-image of s in a fixed fundamental set of the associated Hermitian symmetric domain. We prove that the height of x is polynomially bounded with respect to the discriminant of the centre of the endomorphism ring of the corresponding Z-Hodge structure. Our bound is the final step needed to complete a proof of the Andre-Oort conjecture under the conjectural lower bounds for the sizes of Galois orbits of special points, using a strategy of Pila and Zannier.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective variety over a number field $K$ endowed with a height function associated to an ample line bundle on $X$. Given an algebraic extension $F$ of $K$ with a sufficiently big Northcott number, we can show that there are finitely many cycles in $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ of bounded degree defined over $F$. Fields $F$ with the required properties were explicitly constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2107.09027" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2107.09027">arXiv:2107.09027</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.04446" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.04446">arXiv:2204.04446</a>, motivating our investigation. We point out explicit specializations to canonical heights associated to abelian varieties and selfmaps of $\mathbb{P}^n$. We apply similar methods to the study of CM-points. As a crucial tool, we introduce a refinement of Northcott's theorem.

Efficient Equidistribution of Nilsequences

Abstract:We give improved bounds for the equidistribution of (multiparameter) nilsequences subject to any degree filtration. The bounds we obtain are single exponential in dimension, improving on double exponential bounds of Green and Tao. To obtain these bounds, we overcome "induction of dimension'' which is ubiquitous throughout higher order Fourier analysis. The improved equidistribution theory is a crucial ingredient in the quasi-polynomial $U^4[N]$ inverse theorem of the author and its extension to the quasi-polynomial $U^{s + 1}[N]$ inverse theorem in joint work with Sah and Sawhney. These results lead to further applications in combinatorial number theory such as bounds for linear equations in the primes which save an arbitrary power of logarithm, which match the bounds Vinogradov obtained for the odd Goldbach conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the equidistribution of $\Cbf$-special subvarieties in certain Kuga varieties, which implies a special case of the general André-Oort conjecture formulated for mixed Shimura varieties proposed by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://R.Pink" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. The main idea is to reduce the equidistribution to a theorem of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang on small points of abelian varieties and a theorem on the equiditribution of $C$-special subvarieties of Kuga varieties of rigid type treated by the author in a previous paper.

Effective equidistribution of large dimensional measures on affine invariant submanifolds

Abstract:The unstable foliation, that locally is given by changing horizontal components of period coordinates, plays an important role in study of translation surfaces, including their deformation theory and in the understanding of horocycle invariant measures. In this article we show that measures of large dimension on the unstable foliation equidistribute in affine invariant submanifolds and give an effective rate. An analogous result in the setting of homogeneous dynamics is crucially used in the effective density and equidistribution results of Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi and Lindenstrauss--Mohammadi--Wang.

Unimodality and certain bivariate formal Laurent series

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the unimodality and strict unimodality of certain formal bivariate Laurent series with non-negative coefficients. We show that the sets of these formal bivariate Laurent series form commutative semirings under the operations of addition and multiplication of formal Laurent series. This result is used to establish the unimodality of sequences involving Gauss polynomials and certain refined color partitions. In particular, we solve an open problem posed by Andrews on the unimodality of generalized Gauss polynomials and establish an unimodal result for a statistic of plane partitions. We also establish many unimodal results for rank statistics in partition theory, including the rank statistics of concave and convex compositions studied by Andrews, as well as certain unimodal sequences studied by Kim-Lim-Lovejoy. Additionally, we establish the unimodality of the Betti numbers and Gromov-Witten invariants of certain Hilbert schemes of points.

Effective equidistribution of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres

Abstract:We prove an effective version of a result due to Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira on the asymptotic distribution of primitive rational points on expanding closed horospheres in the space of lattices. Key ingredients of our proof include recent bounds on matrix Kloosterman sums due to Erdélyi and Tóth, results by Clozel, Oh and Ullmo on the effective equidistribution of Hecke points, and Rogers' integration formula in the geometry of numbers. As an application of the main theorem, we also obtain a result on the limit distribution of the number of small solutions of a random system of linear congruences to a large modulus. Furthermore, as a by-product of our proofs, we obtain a sharp bound on the number of nonsquare matrices over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ with small entries and of a given size and rank.

Equidistribution in Random Polynomials and Systems of Random Holomorphic Sections

Abstract:This article addresses an equidistribution problem concerning the zeros of systems of random holomorphic sections of positive line bundles on compact K\"{a}hler manifolds and random polynomials on $\mathbb{C}^{m}$ in the setting of a compact subset. For random polynomials, we consider non-orthonormal bases and prove an equidistribution result which are more general than the previously acquired ones for non-discrete probability measures. More precisely, our result demonstrates that the equidistribution holds true even when the random coefficients in the basis representation are not independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.), and moreover, they are not constrained to any particular probability distribution function. For random holomorphic sections, by extending the concept of a sequence of asymptotically Bernstein-Markov measures introduced by Levenberg, Bloom and Bayraktar in their recent paper to the setting of holomorphic line bundles over compact K\"{a}hler manifolds, we derive a global equidistribution theorem related to the zeros of systems of random holomorphic sections for large tensor powers of a fixed line bundle for any codimension $k$. In both settings using the variance estimation technique in another study of the author with Bojnik plays an important role.
