Ultracold collisions in tight harmonic traps: Quantum defect model and application to metastable helium atoms

Abstract:We analyze a system of two colliding ultracold atoms under strong harmonic confinement from the viewpoint of quantum defect theory and formulate a generalized self-consistent method for determining the allowed energies. We also present two highly efficient computational methods for determining the bound state energies and eigenfunctions of such systems. The perturbed harmonic oscillator problem is characterized by a long asymptotic region beyond the effective range of the interatomic potential. The first method, which is based on quantum defect theory and is an adaptation of a technique developed by one of the authors (GP) for highly excited states in a modified Coulomb potential, is very efficient for integrating through this outer region. The second method is a direct numerical solution of the radial Schrödinger equation using a discrete variable representation of the kinetic energy operator and a scaled radial coordinate grid. The methods are applied to the case of trapped spin-polarized metastable helium atoms. The calculated eigenvalues agree very closely for the two methods, and with those computed self-consistently using the generalized self-consistent method.

Abstract:Understanding collisions between ultracold molecules is crucial for making stable molecular quantum gases and harnessing their rich internal degrees of freedom for quantum engineering. Transient complexes can strongly influence collisional physics, but in the ultracold regime, key aspects of their behavior have remained unknown. To explain experimentally observed loss of ground-state molecules from optical dipole traps, it was recently proposed that molecular complexes can be lost due to photo-excitation. By trapping molecules in a repulsive box potential using laser light near a narrow molecular transition, we are able to test this hypothesis with light intensities three orders of magnitude lower than what is typical in red-detuned dipole traps. This allows us to investigate light-induced collisional loss in a gas of nonreactive fermionic $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules. Even for the lowest intensities available in our experiment, our results are consistent with universal loss, meaning unit loss probability inside the short-range interaction potential. Our findings disagree by at least two orders of magnitude with latest theoretical predictions, showing that crucial aspects of molecular collisions are not yet understood, and provide a benchmark for the development of new theories.

Abstract:We study particles in a vortex state driven to a core state with lower energy and zero angular momentum by the trap potential asymmetries. We End that at T = 0 when the role of the thermal gas can be ignored, there will be coexisting condensates. We also calculate the fluctuation of the number difference and argue that in certain range of the parameters the state of the whole system is the macroscopic quantum self-trapping in the Josephson tunnelling regime.

Abstract:A simple model is proposed to simulate the evolution of interpersonal relationships in a class. The small social network is simply assumed as an undirected and weighted graph, in which students are represented by vertices, and the extent of favor or disfavor between two of them are denoted by the weight of corresponding edge. Various weight distributions have been found by choosing different initial configurations. Analysis and experimental results reveal that the effect of first impressions has a crucial influence on the final weight distribution. The system also exhibits a phase transition in the final hostility (negative weights) proportion depending on the initial amity (positive weights) proportion.

Abstract:We proposed and realized a low noise measurement method based on differential optical interferometer to measure trapped cold atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The configuration is based on a Mach-Zehnder type interferometer, which is composed of two beams of different frequencies. A long-term stability in phase monitor has been obtained by use of the vibration immune mechanism through subtraction of the interferograms imaged on the two photodetectors. With this new configuration, the noise caused by environmental perturbation is greatly reduced at low frequency while the signal of phase shift keeps a good long-term stability.
Dynamic Stabilization of a Coupled Ultracold Atom-Molecule System.

Abstract:We numerically demonstrate the dynamic stabilization of a strongly interacting many-body bosonic system which can be realized by coupled ultracold atom-molecule gases. The system is initialized to an unstable equilibrium state corresponding to a saddle point in the classical phase space, where subsequent free evolution gives rise to atom-molecule conversion. To control and stabilize the system, periodic modulation is applied that suddenly shifts the relative phase between the atomic and the molecular modes and limits their further interconversion. The stability diagram for the range of modulation amplitudes and periods that stabilize the dynamics is given. The validity of the phase diagram obtained from the time-average calculation is discussed by using the orbit tracking method, and the difference in contrast with the maximum absolute deviation analysis is shown as well. A brief quantum analysis shows that quantum fluctuations can put serious limitations on the applicability of the mean-field results.

Abstract:We investigate the conversion dynamics of ultracold bosonic atoms to molecules in an external field with a Gaussian temporal shape and a linear frequency sweep. Under the mean-field theory, we study the atom–molecule conversion efficiency and the dynamics in the conversion process. By using the Fock-state basis, we further research the quantum many-body dynamics, wherein the many-body effect on the conversion is discussed. We find that the atom–molecule conversion dynamics depend on the particle interaction, peak coupled strength, sweep rate, and total particle number. Notably, some analytical results are derived in the regime without particle interactions and in the sudden limit, respectively. Our theory indicates that the ultracold atom–molecule conversion can be achieved stably and efficiently in the Gaussian external field model.

Abstract:The ability to tune the strength of the attractive interaction in trapped Fermi gases is revealing the nature of superfluidity (and supercon ductivity) in a hitherto unexplored regime. Within the last few years we have wit nessed the discovery of strongly interacting Fermi gases; over the last ye ar we have found strong evidence for their superfluidity. These interactinggases appear at intermediate coupling and are the most complex. A Kapitza Pendulum for Ultracold Atoms

Abstract:We report on the experimental realization of a Kapitza pendulum for ultracold atoms. Using time-periodic attractive and repulsive Gaussian potentials, we create an effective trap for ultracold neutral atoms in a regime where the time average of the potential is equal to zero. We analyze the role of experimental imperfections, the stability of the trapped atomic cloud, and the magnitude of the effective potential. We find good agreement with the high-frequency expansion of the underlying system dynamics. Our experimental approach opens up new possibilities to study Floquet systems of neutral atoms.

Abstract:Utilizing single-photon photoassociation, we have achieved ultracold rubidium molecules with a high number density that provides a new efficient approach toward molecular quantum degeneracy. A new detection mechanism for ultracold molecule utilizing the inelastic atom-molecule collision is demonstrated. The resonant coupling effect on the formation of the ${\rm X^1\Sigma^+_g}$ ground state ${\rm ^{85}Rb_2}$ allows for a sufficient number of more deeply bound ultracold molecules, which induced an additional trap loss and heating of the co-existing atoms owing to the inelastic atom-molecule collision. Therefore, after photoassociation process, the ultracold molecules can be investigated using the absorption image of the ultracold rubidium atoms mixed with the molecules in a crossed optical dipole trap. The existence of the ultracold molecules was then verified, and the amount of the accumulated molecules was measured. This method is to detect the final produced ultracold molecules, and hence distinct from the conventional trap loss experiments, which is used to study the association resonance. It is composed of measurements of the time evolution of atomic cloud and a decay model, by which the number density of the ultracold ${\rm ^{85}Rb_2}$ molecules in the optical trap was estimated to be ${\rm > 5.2\times10^{11} cm^{-3}}$.

Quantum mixtures of ultracold gases of neutral atoms

Abstract:After decades of improvements in cooling techniques of several atomic species and in finding methods for the achievement of stable quantum mixtures, the field is now ready for an extensive use of such a versatile experimental platform for the investigation of a variety of physical problems. Among them, relevant examples are the dynamics of impurities in a quantum gas, the miscibility condition of different gases, the study of exotic topological structures, the interplay between magnetism and superfluidity, the formation of artificial molecules, or new few-body states. We illustrate the differences among possible quantum mixtures, be they homonuclear spin mixtures or heteronuclear ones, and show how they can be exploited to investigate a plethora of topics from the few-body to the many-body regime. In particular, we discuss quantum mixtures of ultracold gases under three different perspectives: systems made of a few atoms of different kinds, single impurities immersed in a host quantum gas, and quantum mixtures of two interacting gases. We restrict the discussion to single harmonic or flat traps, predominantly in a three-dimensional configuration. A selection of results on recent experiments and possible interesting future directions are given.

Abstract:Chemical reactions can be surprisingly efficient at ultracold temperatures ( < 1mK) due to the wave nature of atoms and molecules. The study of reactions in the ultracold regime is a new research frontier enabled by cooling and trapping techniques developed in atomic and molecular physics. In addition, ultracold molecular gases that offer diverse molecular internal states and large electric dipolar interactions are sought after for studies of strongly interacting many-body quantum physics. Here we propose a new approach for producing ultracold molecules in the absolute internal and motional quantum ground state, where single molecules are assembled one by one from individual atoms. The scheme involves laser cooling, optical trapping, Raman sideband cooling, and coherent molecular state transfer. As a crucial initial step, we demonstrate quantum control of constituent atoms, including 3D ground-state cooling of a single Cs atom, in a simple apparatus. As laser technology advances to shorter wavelengths, additional atoms will be amenable to laser-cooling, allowing more diverse, and eventually more complex, molecules to be assembled with full quantum control.

Abstract:We demonstrate that final states of ultracold molecules by scattering with atoms can be selectively produced using dynamic magnetic fields of multiple frequencies. We develop a multifrequency Floquet coupled channel method to study the channel selection by dynamic magnetic field control, which can be interpreted by a generalized quantum Zeno effect for the selected scattering channels. In particular, we use an atom-molecule spin-flip scattering to show that the transition to certain final states of the molecules in the inelastic scattering can be suppressed by engineered coupling between the Floquet states.

Abstract:We study the dynamical evolution of cold atoms in crossed optical dipole trap theoretically and experimentally. The atomic transport process is accompanied by two competitive kinds of physical mechanics, atomic loading and atomic loss. The loading process normally is negligible in the evaporative cooling experiment on the ground, while it is significant in the preparation of ultra-cold atoms in the space station. Normally, the atomic loading process is much weaker than the atomic loss process, and the atomic number in the center region of the trap decreases monotonically, as reported in previous research. However, when the atomic loading process is comparable to the atomic loss process, the atomic number in the center region of the trap will initially increase to a maximum value and then slowly decrease, and we have observed the phenomenon first. The increase of atomic number in the center region of the trap shows the presence of the loading process, and this will be significant especially under microgravity conditions. We build a theoretical model to analyze the competitive relationship, which coincides with the experimental results well. Furthermore, we have also given the predicted evolutionary behaviors under different conditions. This research provides a solid foundation for further understanding of the atomic transport process in traps. The analysis of loading process is of significant importance for the preparation of ultra-cold atoms in a crossed optical dipole trap under microgravity conditions.
