Abstract:We classify hyperbolic polynomials in two real variables that admit a transitive action on some component of their hyperbolic level sets. Such surfaces are called special homogeneous surfaces, and they are equipped with a natural Riemannian metric obtained by restricting the negative Hessian of their defining polynomial. Independent of the degree of the polynomials, there exist a finite number of special homogeneous surfaces. They are either flat, or have constant negative curvature.

Abstract:We classify homogeneous polar foliations of codimension two on irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type up to orbit equivalence. Any such foliation is either hyperpolar or the canonical extension of a polar homogeneous foliation on a rank one symmetric space.

Abstract:We provide new criteria for the integrality and birationality of an extension of graded algebras in terms of the general notion of polar multiplicities of Kleiman and Thorup. As an application, we obtain a new criterion for when a module is a reduction of another in terms of certain mixed Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicities. Furthermore, we prove several technical results regarding polar multiplicities.

Abstract:We study polar actions with horizontal sections on the total space of certain principal bundles G/K→G/HG/K\to G/H with base a symmetric space of compact type. We classify such actions up to orbit equivalence in many cases. In particular, we exhibit examples of hyperpolar actions with cohomogeneity greater than one on locally irreducible homogeneous spaces with nonnegative curvature which are not homeomorphic to symmetric spaces.

Abstract:In recent years, the study of holomorphic correspondences as dynamical systems that can display behaviors of both rational maps and Kleinian groups has gained a good amount of attention. This phenomenon is related to the Sullivan dictionary, a list of parallels between the theories of these two systems. We build upon a surgical construction of such matings, due to Bullett and Harvey, increasing the degree of maps we consider, and proving regularity properties of the mating map on parameter spaces: namely, analyticity on the interior of its domain of definition, and continuity under quasiconformal rigidity on the boundary.

Abstract:We give a classification of finite groups of symplectic birational automorphisms on a manifold of K3^[3]-type with stable and stably saturated cohomological action. We describe the group of polarized automorphisms of a smooth double EPW-cube. Using this description, we exhibit examples of projective hyperkaehler manifolds of K3^[3]-type of maximal Picard rank with a symplectic action of a large group.

Abstract:By a generalized Delsarte polynomial we mean a Laurent polynomial whose exponent vectors are linearly independent. We consider certain monomial deformations of generalized Delsarte polynomials and study their associated differential modules. We determine the solutions at the origin, which are all classical ${}_kF_{k-1}$-hypergeometric functions with the variable raised to a power. Using standard changes of variable, we also obtain the solutions at infinity.

Abstract:Within the framework of mappings between affine spaces, the notion of nth polarization of a function will lead to an intrinsic characterization of polynomial functions. We prove that the characteristic features of derivations, such as linearity, iterability, Leibniz and chain rules are shared – at the finite level – by the polarization operators. We give these results by means of explicit general formulae, which are valid at any order n, and are based on combinatorial identities. The infinitesimal limits of the nth polarizations of a function will yield its nth derivatives (without resorting to the usual recursive definition), and the afore-mentioned properties will be recovered directly in the limit. Polynomial functions will allow us to produce a coordinate free version of Taylor's formula.

We provide some properties of the balancing hybrinomials, including Catalan, Cassini, d'Ocagne, and Vajda identities, among others. Moreover, we present a matrix representation of the hybrinomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we will show dichotomy theorems for the computation of polynomials corresponding to evaluation of graph homomorphisms in Valiant's model. We are given a fixed graph $H$ and want to find all graphs, from some graph class, homomorphic to this $H$. These graphs will be encoded by a family of polynomials. We give dichotomies for the polynomials for cycles, cliques, trees, outerplanar graphs, planar graphs and graphs of bounded genus.

Linear Algebra and its Applications

Abstract:We provide simple criteria and algorithms for expressing homogeneous polynomials as sums of powers of independent linear forms, or equivalently, for decomposing symmetric tensors into sums of rank-1 symmetric tensors of linearly independent vectors. The criteria rely on two facets of higher degree forms, namely Harrison's algebraic theory and some algebro-geometric properties. The proposed algorithms are based purely on solving linear and quadratic equations. Moreover, as a byproduct of our criteria and algorithms one can easily decide whether or not a homogeneous polynomial or symmetric tensor is orthogonally or unitarily decomposable.
Planar decomposition of bipartite HOMFLY polynomials in symmetric representations

Abstract:We generalize the recently discovered planar decomposition (Kauffman bracket) for the HOMFLY polynomials of bipartite knot/link diagrams to (anti)symmetrically colored HOMFLY polynomials. Cabling destroys planarity, but it is restored after projection to (anti)symmetric representations. This allows to go beyond arborescent calculus, which so far produced the majority of results for colored polynomials. Technicalities include combinations of projectors, and these can be handled rigorously, without any guess-work -- what can be also useful for other considerations, where reliable quantization was so far unavailable. We explicitly provide simple examples of calculation of the HOMFLY polynomials in symmetric representations with the use of our planar technique. These examples reveal what we call the bipartite evolution and the bipartite decomposition of squares of $\mathcal{R}$-matrices eigenvalues in the antiparallel channel.

Abstract:Polynomials in a category have been studied as a generalization of the traditional notion in mathematics. Their construction has recently been extended to higher groupoids, as formalized in homotopy type theory, by Finster, Mimram, Lucas and Seiller, thus resulting in a cartesian closed bicategory. We refine and extend their work in multiple directions. We begin by generalizing the construction of the free symmetric monoid monad on types in order to handle arities in an arbitrary universe. Then, we extend this monad to the (wild) category of spans of types, and thus to a comonad by self-duality. Finally, we show that the resulting Kleisli category is equivalent to the traditional category of polynomials. This thus establishes polynomials as a (homotopical) model of linear logic. In fact, we explain that it is closely related to a bicategorical model of differential linear logic introduced by Melliès.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $\epsilon $ -lc singularities for $\epsilon >0$ , and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_{X}$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,\epsilon $ . This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessarily nef) on a klt Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$ , then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$ . It also gives new proofs of some known results, for example, if $X$ is an $\epsilon $ -lc Fano variety of dimension $d$ then taking $N=-K_{X}$ we recover birationality of $|-mK_{X}|$ for bounded $m$ . We prove similar birational boundedness results for nef and big Weil divisors $N$ on projective klt varieties $X$ when both $K_{X}$ and $N-K_{X}$ are pseudo-effective (here $X$ is not assumed $\epsilon $ -lc). Using the above, we show boundedness of polarised varieties under some natural conditions. We extend these to boundedness of semi-log canonical Calabi-Yau pairs polarised by effective ample Weil divisors not containing lc centres. We will briefly discuss applications to existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of such polarised Calabi-Yau pairs.
On the Decomposition of Hecke Polynomials over Parabolic Hecke Algebras

Abstract:We generalize a classical result of Andrianov on the decomposition of Hecke polynomials. Let $\mathfrak{F}$ be a non-archimedean local fied. For every connected reductive group $\mathbf{G}$, we give a criterion for when a polynomial with coefficients in the spherical parahoric Hecke algebra of $\mathbf{G}(\mathfrak{F})$ decomposes over a parabolic Hecke algebra associated with a non-obtuse parabolic subgroup of $\mathbf{G}$. We classify the non-obtuse parabolics. This then shows that our decomposition theorem covers all the classical cases due to Andrianov and Gritsenko. We also obtain new cases when the relative root system of $\mathbf{G}$ contains factors of types $E_6$ or $E_7$.

We write out the developing map and holonomy morphism of each of these structures explicitly on each primary Hopf surface.

Abstract:We study the class of polynomials whose Hessians evaluated at any point of a closed convex cone have Lorentzian signature. This class is a generalization to the remarkable class of Lorentzian polynomials. We prove that hyperbolic polynomials and conic stable polynomials belong to this class, and the set of polynomials with Lorentzian signature is closed. Finally, we develop a method for computing permanents of nonsingular matrices which belong to a class that includes nonsingular $k$-locally singular matrices via hyperbolic programming.

General birationality and Hyperelliptic Theta divisors

Abstract:We first state a condition ensuring that having a birational map onto the image is an open property for families of irreducible normal non uniruled varieties. We give then some criteria to ensure general birationality for a family of rational maps, via specializations. Among the applications is a new proof of a result obtained jointly with Luca Cesarano: that, for a general pair $(A,X)$ of an (ample) Hypersurface $X$ in an Abelian Variety $A$, the canonical map $\Phi_X$ of $X$ is birational onto its image if the polarization given by $X$ is not principal. The proof is also based on a careful study of the Theta divisors of the Jacobians of Hyperelliptic curves, and some related geometrical constructions. We investigate these here also in view of their beauty and of their independent interest, as they lead to a description of the rings of Hyperelliptic theta functions.
