Abstract:A nontrivial scalar field configuration of vanishing energy-momentum is reported. These matter configurations have no influence on the metric and therefore they are not be "detected" gravitationally. This phenomenon occurs for a time-dependent nonminimally coupled and self-interacting scalar field on the 2+1 (BTZ) black hole geometry. We conclude that such stealth configurations exist for the static 2+1 black hole for any value of the nonminimal coupling parameter $\zeta\neq0$ with a fixed self-interaction potential $U_\zeta(\Phi)$. For the range $0<\zeta\leq1/2$ potentials are bounded from below and for the range $0<\zeta<1/4$ the stealth field falls into the black hole and is swallowed by it at an exponential rate, without any consequence for the black hole.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in the background of 2 + 1 - dimensional BTZ black hole geometry, whether there exists a non - trivial scalar field configuration. The energy - momentum tensor of this configuration is zero, so it will not have any impact on the metric, that is, a scalar field configuration that is gravitationally undetectable (stealth). Specifically, the author studied the scalar field that is non - minimally coupled to 2 + 1 - dimensional gravity and self - interacting. Its action is: \[ S=\int d^{3}x\sqrt{-g}\left(\frac{1}{2\kappa}(R + 2l^{-2})-\frac{1}{2}\nabla_{\mu}\Psi\nabla^{\mu}\Psi-\frac{1}{2}\zeta R\Psi^{2}-U(\Psi)\right) \] where $\Lambda=-l^{-2}$ is the cosmological constant, $\zeta$ is the non - minimal coupling parameter, and $U(\Psi)$ is the self - interacting potential. The corresponding field equations are: \[ G_{\mu}^{\nu}-l^{-2}\delta_{\mu}^{\nu}=\kappa T_{\mu}^{\nu} \] \[ \Box\Psi=\zeta R\Psi+\frac{dU(\Psi)}{d\Psi} \] The energy - momentum tensor is: \[ T_{\mu}^{\nu}=\nabla^{\mu}\Psi\nabla_{\nu}\Psi-\delta_{\mu}^{\nu}\left(\frac{1}{2}\nabla^{\alpha}\Psi\nabla_{\alpha}\Psi+U(\Psi)\right)+\zeta\left(\delta_{\mu}^{\nu}\Box-\nabla_{\mu}\nabla^{\nu}+G_{\mu}^{\nu}\right)\Psi^{2} \] The author is looking for non - trivial solutions that satisfy $T_{\mu}^{\nu} = 0$. This means that these solutions will not make any contribution to the Einstein equations and thus will not be detected by gravity. Through analysis, the author found that for static 2 + 1 - dimensional black holes ($J = 0$), such non - trivial solutions exist, and the time - dependence of these solutions is necessary. In addition, the author also discussed the form of the self - interacting potential $U(\Psi)$ under different non - minimal coupling parameters $\zeta$, and pointed out that in the range of $0 < \zeta <\frac{1}{4}$, these solutions are physically reasonable. In particular, when $\zeta=\frac{1}{8}$, the self - interacting potential has conformal invariance, which gives the solutions some special properties. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to explore whether, under specific conditions, there exists a special scalar field configuration that exists but does not have any impact on gravity, thus revealing an exceptional case in the relationship between matter and gravity in general relativity.
