Abstract: We prove that a submanifold with parallel focal structure, which is a generalization of isoparametric and equifocal submanifolds, induces a singular Riemannian foliation of the ambient space by its parallel and focal manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:In this paper we review some author's results about singular holonomy of singular riemannian foliations with sections (s.r.f.s for short) and also some results of a joint work with Toeben and a joint work with Gorodski. We stress here that the condition that the leaves are compact, used in some of these results, can be replaced by the condition that the leaves are closed embedded. We also briefly recall some of Toeben's results about blow-up of s.r.f.s. Then we use this technique to get conditions under which a holonomy map can be extended to a global isometry.

Singular Riemannian Foliations, variational problems and Principles of Symmetric Criticalities

Abstract:A singular foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ is called Singular Riemannian foliation (SRF for short) if its leaves are locally equidistant, e.g., the partition of $M$ into orbits of an isometric action. In this paper, we investigate variational problems in compact Riemannian manifolds equipped with SRF with special properties, e.g. isoparametric foliations, SRF on fibers bundles with Sasaki metric, and orbit-like foliations. More precisely, we prove two results analogous to Palais' Principle of Symmetric Criticality, one is a general principle for $\mathcal{F}$ symmetric operators on the Hilbert space $W^{1,2}(M)$, the other one is for $\mathcal{F}$ symmetric integral operators on the Banach spaces $W^{1,p}(M)$. These results together with a $\mathcal{F}$ version of Rellich Kondrachov Hebey Vaugon Embedding Theorem allow us to circumvent difficulties with Sobolev's critical exponents when considering applications of Calculus of Variations to find solutions to PDEs. To exemplify this we prove the existence of weak solutions to a class of variational problems which includes $p$-Kirschoff problems.

Abstract:For a singular Riemannian foliation whose leaves are properly embedded, we show in the first part of this article the existence of global tubular neighbourhoods, and we develop a global description of the foliation as stratification by types of leaves. The second part deals with the further restriction to a foliation without horizontal conjugate points, introduced by Lytchak and Thorbergsson, which in the special case of an isometric group action equals the concept of variationally completeness. Therefrom, we deduce a global geometric description -- the focal points of the leaves are exactly the singular points -- as well as a topological one: tautness of the leaves.

Abstract:A singular foliation is a partition of a manifold into leaves of perhaps varying dimension. Stefan and Sussmann carried out fundamental work on singular foliations in the 1970s. We survey their contributions, show how diffeological objects and ideas arise naturally in this setting, and highlight some consequences within diffeology. We then introduce a definition of transverse equivalence of singular foliations, following Molino's definition for regular foliations. We show that, whereas transverse equivalent singular foliations always have diffeologically diffeomorphic leaf spaces, the converse holds only for certain classes of singular foliations. We finish by showing that the basic cohomology of a singular foliation is invariant under transverse equivalence.

Abstract:We study the existence of symplectic and conformal symplectic (codimension-1) foliations on closed manifolds of dimension . Our main theorem, based on a recent result by Bertelson–Meigniez, states that in dimension at least 7 any almost contact structure is homotopic to a conformal symplectic foliation. In dimension 5 we construct explicit conformal symplectic foliations on every closed, simply-connected, almost contact manifold, as well as honest symplectic foliations on a large subset of them. Lastly, via round-connected sums, we obtain, on closed manifolds, examples of conformal symplectic foliations which admit a linear deformation to contact structures.

Abstract:We present how to collapse a manifold equipped with a closed flat regular Riemannian foliation with leaves of positive dimension on a compact manifold, while keeping the sectional curvature uniformly bounded from above and below. From this deformation, we show that a closed flat regular Riemannian foliation with leaves of positive dimension on a compact simply-connected manifold is given by torus actions. This gives a geometric characterization of aspherical regular Riemannian foliations given by torus actions.

Abstract:We prove that the group of isometries preserving a metric foliation on a closed Alexandrov space $X$, or a singular Riemannian foliation on a manifold $M$ is a closed subgroup of the isometry group of $X$ in the case of a metric foliation, or of the isometry group of $M$ for the case of a singular Riemannian foliation. We obtain a sharp upper bound for the dimension of these subgroups and show that, when equality holds, the foliations that realize this upper bound are induced by fiber bundles whose fibers are round spheres or projective spaces. Moreover, singular Riemannian foliations that realize the upper bound are induced by smooth fiber bundles whose fibers are round spheres or projective spaces.

Abstract:Brunella's classification implies that every smooth foliation on a compact complex surface admits a singular transversely projective structure. However, Biswas and Sorin's recent work shows that certain foliations on compact complex surfaces, despite possessing a singular transversely projective structure, do not admit a regular transversely projective structure. Here, we describe the smooth foliations on compact complex surfaces which fail to possess a regular transversely projective structure.

Abstract:In this article, we study the geometric properties of codimension one foliations on Riemannian manifolds equipped with vector fields that are closed and conformal. Apart from its singularities, these vector fields define codimension one foliations with nice geometric features, which we call Montiel Foliations. We investigate conditions for which a foliation transverse to this structure has totally geodesic leaves, as well as how the ambient space and the geometry of the leaves forces a given foliation into a Montiel Foliation. Our main results concern minimal leaves and constant mean curvature foliations, having compact or complete noncompact leaves. Finally, we characterize totally geodesic foliations by means of its relation to a prior Montiel Foliation.

Abstract:A decomposition theorem is established for a class of closed Riemannian submanifolds immersed in a space form of constant sectional curvature. In particular, it is shown that if $M$ has nonnegative sectional curvature and admits a Codazzi tensor with "parallel mean curvature", then $M$ is locally isometric to a direct product of irreducible factors determined by the spectrum of that tensor. This decomposition is global when $M$ is simply connected, and generalizes what is known for immersed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector.

On the structure of foliations on dilation surfaces

Abstract:Dilation surfaces are geometric surfaces modelled after the complex plane whose structure group is generated by the groups of translations and dilations. For any dilation surface, for any direction $\theta$ in $S^1$, there exists a foliation on the surface called the directional foliation in direction $\theta$. In this Thesis, we prove a structure theorem for the directional foliations on dilation surfaces using a decomposition theorem established by C.J. Gardiner in the 1980s. We show that given a directional foliation on any dilation surface, there exists a decomposition of the surface into finitely many subsurfaces on which the foliation structure is in one of four possible cases: completely periodic, Morse-Smale, minimal or Cantor-like. We further prove that in the last two cases, the first return map on a segment transversal to the foliation is semi-conjugated to a minimal interval exchange transformation. As a corollary, we obtain an analogous result for affine interval exchange transformations. Throughout the thesis, we accompany our results with an explicit example of a dilation surface called the Disco surface. We analyze the directional foliations on the Disco surface that exhibit non-trivially recurrent behaviour and explain geometrically why these foliations accumulate to a Cantor set.

Abstract:Let X be a Stein manifold of complex dimension endowed with a Riemannian metric . We show that for every integer k with there is a nonsingular holomorphic foliation of dimension k on X all of whose leaves are closed and -complete. The same is true if provided that there is a complex vector bundle epimorphism . We also show that if is a proper holomorphic foliation on then for any Riemannian metric on there is a holomorphic automorphism of such that the image foliation is -complete. The analogous result is obtained on every Stein manifold with Varolin's density property.

Abstract:Given a foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $X$ and an embedding $X\subseteq Y$, is there a foliation on $Y$ extending $\mathcal{F}$? Using formal methods, we show that this question has an affirmative answer whenever the embedding is sufficiently positive with respect to $(X,\mathcal{F})$ and the singularities of $\mathcal{F}$ belong to a certain class. These tools also apply in the case where $Y$ is the total space of a deformation of $X$. Regarding the uniqueness of the extension, we prove a foliated version of a statement by Fujita and Grauert ensuring the existence of tubular neighborhoods. We also give sufficient conditions for a foliation to have only trivial unfoldings, generalizing a result due to Gómez-Mont.

Abstract:It is well known that, by the Reeb stability theorem, the leaf space of a Riemannian foliation with compact leaves is an orbifold. We prove that, under mild completeness conditions, the leaf space of a Killing Riemannian foliation is a diffeological quasifold: as a diffeological space, it is locally modelled by quotients of Cartesian space by countable groups acting affinely. Furthermore, we prove that the holonomy groupoid of the foliation is, locally, Morita equivalent to the action groupoid of a countable group acting affinely on Cartesian space.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a number of results about the topology of the leaves of a closed singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\fol)$. If $M$ is simply connected, we prove that the leaves are finitely covered by nilpotent spaces, and characterize the fundamental group of the generic leaves. If $M$ has virtually nilpotent fundamental group, we prove that the leaves have virtually nilpotent fundamental group as well.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors consider leaf spaces of singular Riemannian foliations $\mathcal{F}$ on compact manifolds $M$ and the associated $\mathcal{F}$-basic spectrum on $M$, $spec_B(M, \mathcal{F}),$ counted with multiplicities. Recently, a notion of smooth isometry $\varphi: M_1/\mathcal{F}_1\rightarrow M_2/\mathcal{F}_2$ between the leaf spaces of such singular Riemannian foliations $(M_1,\mathcal{F}_1)$ and $(M_2,\mathcal{F}_2)$ has appeared in the literature. In this paper, the authors provide an example to show that the existence a smooth isometry of leaf spaces as above is not sufficient to guarantee the equality of $spec_B(M_1,\mathcal{F}_1)$ and $spec_B(M_2,\mathcal{F}_2).$ The authors then prove that if some additional conditions involving the geometry of the leaves are satisfied, then the equality of $spec_B(M_1,\mathcal{F}_1)$ and $spec_B(M_2,\mathcal{F}_2)$ is guaranteed. Consequences and applications to orbifold spectral theory, isometric group actions, and their reductions are also explored.
