Abstract: We prove an approximate spectral theorem for non-self-adjoint operators and investigate its applications to second order differential operators in the semi-classical limit. This leads to the construction of a twisted FBI transform. We also investigate the connections between pseudospectra and boundary conditions in the semi-classical limit.
Spectral Theory
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the spectral theory problems of non - self - adjoint operators (NSA), especially the pseudospectra of these operators in the semi - classical limit and their applications. Specifically, the goals of the paper can be summarized as follows: 1. **Extension of the concept of pseudospectra**: The paper proposes a broader and more general definition of pseudospectra. This new definition not only covers the traditional concept of pseudospectra but also introduces the connection with the geometric structure of the phase space. This improvement increases the conceptual clarity and promotes the ability to analyze pseudospectra in scenarios related to semi - classical approximations. 2. **Applications of pseudo - eigenfunctions**: The paper explores the importance of pseudo - eigenfunctions rather than pseudospectra, because pseudo - eigenfunctions play a crucial role in approximate methods for solving evolution equations. Especially in the multi - dimensional case, choosing a single complex number as a parameter is not sufficient to obtain enough pseudo - eigenfunctions, and points in the classical phase space should be used for parameterization. 3. **Semi - classical analysis**: Through the semi - classical principal symbol and the so - called interior pseudo - eigenvectors, the paper establishes a connection with semi - classical analysis. In addition, the paper also introduces the concept of boundary pseudo - eigenvectors and describes how to construct these vectors. 4. **Approximate spectral theorem**: The paper proves an abstract approximate spectral theorem applicable to non - self - adjoint operators and explores its connection with quantization. This theorem provides a new perspective for understanding the behavior of non - self - adjoint operators. 5. **Numerical applications**: The methods proposed in the paper have practical application value in numerical calculations. Especially when dealing with evolution equations of certain singular infinitesimal generators, they can be efficiently solved by approximate diagonalization. 6. **Connecting quantization and pseudospectral theory**: The paper discusses the relationship between the above results and the concept of quantization. In particular, by introducing the twisted FBI transform to adapt to specific differential operators, the application range of pseudospectral theory is further expanded. In summary, this paper provides new tools and methods for understanding and analyzing the properties of non - self - adjoint operators by extending the concept of pseudospectra, exploring the applications of pseudo - eigenfunctions, establishing connections with semi - classical analysis, and proving the approximate spectral theorem. These results are not only of great theoretical significance but also show potential value in numerical calculations and practical applications.
